September is a month that is full of lots of activities, usually focused
around going back to school.
Parents are busy making sure that the clothes and shoes fit. If they
don't you know there will be a shopping trip on the horizon. First
days back to school are so much fun because the students have been missing
some of their friends and maybe, just maybe, there will be a new friend or
two to be made.
This year most of the students and parents are especially happy that their
children will be returning to a "more normal" way of learning. No more
"home schooling" unless that is the choice you have made for your
children.
For the kids going back, it will seem even more special! Their old
classrooms have been empty for almost 2 years. Who knows what changes
have taken place while they were all being home schooled.
I love seeing everyone's pictures of their kids all dressed up and ready to
jump on the School Bus! All their backpacks and gear labelled and ready
to use.
Personally, the memory I love the best was getting that new pencil case
and the pencils, pens, crayons or colored pencils that I would use almost
daily!
There is something really special about getting that brand new pack of
Crayola Pencil Crayons
and sitting with a brand new sharpener. While patiently sharpening
each crayon, I would daydream about how this year was going to be the best
year ever! It was almost like a child's meditation on
life!
For younger children it might be a whole new set of Crayola Crayons and
some new pencils. A
Pink Eraser
that hadn't yet been used was also a MUST HAVE for the new school
year.
I don't know why, but around this time of year I love going shopping for
school supplies, just nowadays we call them office supplies. It
still makes my heart go pitter patter when I see those Colored Pencils and
Markers of all kinds.
My guess is that most children will be looking forward to school this
year for many reasons. The parents are looking forward to this as
well. Running Zoom meetings with teachers is not the same as
being in the classroom. Getting back together with their friends and
socializing would be the first reason many are looking forward to Back to
School. And I'm sure the second reason is to pull out those brand
new pencils, pencil crayons and markers to do the first of many
assignments.
Keeping them all together and neat is another fun part of this Back to
School task and
pencil cases
have come a long way from the plain black top zipped pouch! Now you
can make a statement with how you carry your personal writing
implements. I happen to love this red one and it has a 5 star rating
as well. The others colors are also really neat!
Back to School is an adventure for the parents as well as the kids.
New gear is part of the fun. Making and seeing new friends and old
ones will always be a part of the Memories that our children will
cherish!
If the kids come home from school a little stressed, make sure you have a
color by numbers book for them, after all it is supposed to relieve
stress! You might want one for yourself too!
Happy Back to School Days Everyone!

I still love new writing implements but have little excuse for buying them! Honestly, I don't remember back to school very much personally but I remember it for my boys. New outfits, backpacks and gear. Mom loved it and I expect they did, too. I hope this year will be better for the current generation of children and that they will have good memories even if they might be a bit different than ours were.
ReplyDeleteBrenda, that is my problem too, I have more pens, pencils and coloring pencils than I will ever use. Every now and again I bring them to my grandchildren, so I can go get some more.....lol
DeleteBuying school supplies, and starting the year with new supplies, was always a fun time in our household too. I love that zebra cartoon!
ReplyDeleteI love the cartoon too. It just makes me laugh out loud and I still love buying school (oops I mean office) supplies!
DeleteOh yes, I still love school supplies! Paper, pens, pencils, crayons -- I love all of it! Even as a senior citizen! I like to smell it even! I don't remember my first day of school, but I do remember all those new supplies.
ReplyDeleteIsn't if funny how we remember those scents! I remember that new pink eraser smell like it was yesterday. First days of school I remember because for me they were traumatic. New country new language new friends, new everything. I was overwhelmed for a long time.
DeleteYou are right, buying school supplies is a big part of the back to school ritual. Thanks for the memories.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome Mary Beth! We do like our rituals don't we?
DeleteAh - the fun of new school supplies to take to the first day of school. Especially important if you are new to the school, having just moved into the area, or are transitioning from perhaps grade school to middle school or beyond. Having new 'school supplies' and new clothes help make that transition easier because having new stuff makes a child feel special.
ReplyDeleteI never thought of it that way, but you are right. New things make you feel special and using them the first time is a real pleasure.
DeleteI also remember getting those new packages of supplies each year when I was young. Even as a teacher there was something special about the start of a new school year as we picked out new bulletin board materials and got the room ready for the new groups of students. But please don't equate pandemic distance learning with genuine homeschooling. Real homeschooling is a different ball game. Homeschoolers may use some of these same supplies when they begin a new school year, but their experience is much richer than those in distance learning environments. There's a lot more hands-on learning and experience learning, often outside, for science, as an example. I had to laugh yesterday when I saw a homeschooling family on Instagram post their version of a First Day of School picture. I can't remember the exact words, but their sign was written in the sand at the beach with the family standing behind the words: "This is our first day of school." Other families take a lot of nature walks. They do use those crayons and colored pencils, too, and a number of other art supplies. And books. Lots of books. Real books more than textbooks. They love what they're' doing, and their kids thrive under it. And they usually get into good colleges, if they choose to go to college. Many start businesses instead.
ReplyDeleteOh Barbara I was not trying to equate what we have gone through in these last two years as "home Schooling" in the proper sense of the word. I do understand that families that home school often have much better experiences for their children and they learn in a completely different way. New supplies work for both groups and are still fun to buy!
DeleteStarting a new school year with fresh school supplies is a long-standing tradition for a reason. When I was a kid, we didn’t have anywhere near the product choices than parents and kids have now. I would have been over the moon to be able to draw and color with some of the huge crayon assortments Crayola offers now!
ReplyDeleteMakes you want to go back just for the joy of all those colors, right Margaret? I could not imagine how wonderful if would be to have 64 or more crayons all in different colors. I was lucky to get a new 8 piece pack.
ReplyDeleteAs a kid I used to love getting all the new school supplies and looking forward to the new term! Love that Zebra cartoon lol!!:)
ReplyDeleteBack to school is an absolute time marker. It's a transition, and a big time of the year for parents and kids. I used to love getting my boys reading for back to school; the clothes, the supplies, getting informed on their schedules and where we meet in the school on the first day. I miss all of that so much. I remember watching the Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon every year since I was a little girl, and it too was my back to school, back to work, time marker. I get sentimental thinking about my own childhood with my parents; my mom, my dad, and really how well we were taken care of - how safe they made me feel - how I had to absolutely pass on that safe feeling to my family. There's something about Fall that brings out the warmth of possibility. I'm rambling, you struck a good nerve here. <3
