Computer Chair Mat Review

Computer Chair Mats

An office chair mat for your computer or office chair on wheels is a necessity whether you have carpet or a non-carpeted surface.

Many companies manufacture chair mats for the precise purpose of protecting your carpet from snags or your wood or tile floors from scratches. The mats also allow your office chair casters to move easily while offering the described protection.

I have used several brands over the years, and they have all worked well.  The one I am featuring today is the AiBob Office Chair Mat.

Features:

  • Made from long-life pure polyethylene that is BPA and phthalalate free for a healthy indoor environment.
  • Surface allows your office chair to move easily, but has enough grip to maintain controlled rolling so your chair does not skid around.
  • The surface of the mat is strong and sturdy, so your chair’s wheels glide easily.
  • Provides good protection for your hardwood floors and carpeted floors.

Mats for Carpets and for Floors

Version for Carpets
:  The floor mats available for carpets work well on low pile carpet floors. Designed to allow effortless movement of office chair wheels while it protects your low pile carpets without leaving indentations.

The mat designed for carpets has nubs on the back to hold the mat in place.

Version for Hard Floors: Designed to protect flooring from scratches and dust. Works well on hardwood, tile, laminate, vinyl, concrete, and linoleum. This mat provides good protection for your hard floors.

Summary

The AiBob Office Chair Mat is rated #16 (mats for floors) and #18 (mats for carpet). Also, the AiBob mat for carpets is listed as Amazon's Choice.

The mat comes rolled, so needs to be flattened a bit before using.  The only complaint registered by reviewers is a strong chemical smell when the mat first arrives. The smell dissipates faster if aired for awhile outside.

Ghost Chair

Now for a fun personal story regarding my computer office chair sitting on my chair mat.

GHOST CHAIR

Computer chair in my home office

One summer 5 years ago, after visiting my son & family in Iowa, I ended up bringing my grandson Ryan (then age 14) back to Georgia with me for a visit.  It was nice having company on the drive home and delightful to have the companionship of my teenage grandson. We did a lot of sightseeing in the Savannah, GA area and many trips to the beach and to my apartment complex pool. In the evenings we played a lot of card games.

One night, while we were playing Monopoly Deal, I happened to glance into my home office which I could view across the hall from the dining room table.  I noticed that my computer chair had moved from my computer desk near the window nearly all the way across to the door of the room. Very strange.  I got up and returned the chair to the mat, wondering how the chair had moved by itself. I wondered if because all the wheels happened to be in a straight line a vibration of some sort had caused the chair to slide off the mat and end up stopping on the rug several feet away.

Ryan and I tried to figure out a reason for this occurrence, but came up with nothing.  Later, the same thing happened. This time, I turned two of the wheels on the chair to hopefully hold it in place. A few days later, the same thing happened. The chair moved half a dozen times in the next couple of weeks and we never did find a reason for it. By that time, we had begun to call it the “Ghost Chair”

At the end of the month-long visit, Ryan and I drove to Kentucky – a half-way point for both us and his parents - to return him home. We stayed overnight in a motel before going our separate ways and that night, out to dinner together, I related to my son & daughter-in-law the story of the Ghost Chair.  Afterwards, Ryan finally admitted that HE was the reason behind the chair's movement which he accomplished whenever I left the room! It was all a teenage practical joke and 'grandma' never suspected. Ryan had succeeded in looking completely innocent the whole time. LOL. We all had a good laugh over it and it has since become a favorite family story. 😄

    1. Thanks, Mary Beth. Ryan & I did have a good laugh over that Ghost Chair. We still kid about it today. Now that I am living near Ryan & family in Iowa, when they come over for dinner we need an extra chair at the table. I always send Ryan to my computer room to get the 'Ghost Chair' LOL.

  2. Elf, I love the story about your “ghost chair,” too! I have no “poker face” at all, so I would have been a dismal failure if I had ever tried to pull that prank. Sounds like Ryan should have won an award for that performance!

I agree with you that chair mats are a necessity wherever an office chair with casters is used, whether on carpet or hardwood flooring. Not only does it protect the carpet or flooring, it also provides a much smoother glide whenever you want to slide over, pull the chair out, or push it in. We have two, one in our home office and another in my jewelry making and craft room/studio. Yours looks like a nice, large size, too!

    1. Thanks, Margaret. Ryan is an expert with keeping a straight face when pulling pranks. He did a couple other teasing things too and pulled them off with such an innocent look. He's a darling kid! :)

  3. These mats a must have if you are in your computer chair for any length of time, especially on a hardwood to prevent scratches. I just loved your Ghost Story, I was clinging to ever word to find the answer. How funny that your grandson thought of this. What a fun story.

    1. Thanks, Sam. Ryan is a clever kid when it comes to subtle teasing. He's done several things like that over the years. You'd think I would have figured it out by now... LOL. He reminds me a lot of my dad, who was an expert with telling you something completely believable with a straight face that you later figured out was a tease. I fell for it every time! :) And I'm not really a gullible person. Dad and Ryan are just very convincing when they do/did these type of things.

  4. I applaud your grandson for being able to pull off the ghost chair prank! Most of us would give ourselves away by laughing, or even getting caught in the act.

I had a desk chair mat when I worked in an office too. They made a world of difference on carpeting! I don't have a desk at home, or I would certainly want one here too. They are a necessity for an home office setup.

    1. Yep, Ryan is a jokester. Five years ago I hadn't spent as much time around him to know this about him, so he had me completely fooled during his visit to Grandma's house in Georgia. Since then, and especially now that I live just 5 miles from him and see him on a regular basis, it is harder for him to 'trick' me... LOL.

  5. That is a great story and your grandson obviously has a great sense of humor(wonder where he got that from?). That would be a favorite story for me too. Those mats that you reviewed are indeed really great for carpeted places. I imagine it would work great on the hardwood floors too ( I don't have any of those). We always have a good chair mat under our rolling chairs too!

    1. Yes, Olivia, Ryan does have a great sense of humor. I'm sure it is inherited as his dad, his grandfather and his great-grandfather all had a similar type of humor! :) I've been telling him for several years that someday I would find a way to tell the story of this prank to others. Today's review of a computer chair mat gave me the perfect venue. :)

  6. Lol at your grandson! I was rooting for the Ghost Chair theory. What a goofy clown; love it. For years I had a chair mat similar to this one - very handy when you have to roll from spot to spot to perform office tasks. Where I sit right now I don't need one, but in the larger spot from before I sure did. Seems like an excellent product.

    1. Glad you enjoyed my Ghost Chair story, Dawn Rae. Ryan (now 19) & I STILL have fun telling that story to family & friends and now, with a review of chair mats, I finally have a place to share that story to everyone. Ryan still enjoys the fact that he was able to so expertly 'fool' me. :)

  8. That's brilliant -- your recommendation of a chair mat AND your story. What a hoot! Have you thought of getting even with your grandson, LOL? I have one son (now grown) who, whenever it was just he and I home alone, would hear the basement door close or a sound in the attic, or... anyway, those were real noises but it was peculiar that they only happened when we were home alone. Bet he'd enjoy your Ghost Chair story.

    1. Glad you enjoyed my Ghost Chair story, Brenda. I MAY find a way someday to 'get even' with Ryan. But his 'dad' (my son) pulled a stunt on me over 20 years ago which I 'swore' I'd get even for and I have yet to come up with something appropriate. LOL. Your son sounds like a similar type of prankster! :)
