Fields of Sunflowers |
However, last year we bought a manual lawnmower. I am not really sure why we decided to do that, but I know we were fed up with our electric ones breaking down or cutting the cord accidentally and the whole hassle of fixing up extension leads inside the house as we have no outside power. The one petrol lawnmower we had was very heavy and noisy and really too big for us and our lawn and neither of us liked it.
The electric one had just given up, more expensive to fix than to buy another one and of course, it was at peak mowing time so we needed another one quickly.
We started trawling Amazon for lawnmowers. We did not want a petrol mower as we do not have a massive amount of lawn and it would have been too much. We were fed up with electric lawnmowers and all the issues we had found with them.
So we decided to hone in on manual lawnmowers. At first, I was not sure this was a good idea. My husband has health issues and I need to be careful with my back having a history of severe back problems. I wasn't sure we would be able to push it without added power.
I also wasn't sure if it would cut effectively. It felt in this age of technology, powered appliances and high specifications to be a step backward. Yet in a way also felt completely appropriate for our nature-friendly, wildlife garden and for the more power-saving, environmentally aware times we live in.
The manual lawnmower we found had an appealing price point and looked very sturdy and we were fed up replacing lawnmowers too often. So we bought a Bosch manual lawn mower.
|
Bosch Manual Lawn Mower |
When it arrived I was pleasantly surprised that it was sturdy looking but not too heavy.
Set up was easy with only the long handles to fix to the frame which even for us was easy. We never fitted the grassbox as we intended to cut the lawn often and have always found a grassbox to be an encumbrance. However, the grassbox is there if we ever need it.
Hubby was the first to try to in the garden. We set the blades on high and he simply pushed it and it cut cleanly and efficiently. After a few laps he stopped and said it was really easy to push and no more work than our previous electric mowers! In fact, he seemed to be rather enjoying it!
So then I tried it and to my joy, it was indeed easy to push and did not hurt my back that time or any other time I have mowed the lawn.
For some reason I have yet to pin down it always seems more fun to use than our powered ones ever did!
So after using this manual lawnmower for nearly a year now we have found clear benefits and drawbacks as we see it from our personal experience.
|
Manual Lawn Mower Is Easy To Use |
It is easier to push than we expected and no more physical strength is required than with our previous powered mowers
Much quieter than our electric or petrol mowers and it has quite a soothing muted sound
There are no electricity costs and no petrol costs. So we can mow to our heart's content knowing we are not incurring any ongoing financial costs at all! This is great for us as power costs are due to rise by a significant amount, so any savings are good.
Regarding the environment, there are no emissions from a manual lawn mower so this is all good for our planet.
There is the joy of knowing that never again will we cut through an electric cable!
With no trailing wires, no extension leads required, no outdoor power needed and no wires trailing from the house into the garden, it is an easy-use tool.
Fewer components mean there is less to go wrong
The manual lawn mower is ready to go as soon as you are! We now have no worries that it won't start or that a component will suddenly go wrong.
|
Close Up Of Bosch Manual Lawnmower, blades, wheels and roller |
Even with battery lawnmowers you have the battery life or recharging to concern yourself with, while with a totally manual machine none such concerns.
Significantly better for wildlife. We don't disturb any more wildlife using our manual lawnmower than we would with our presence walking down the garden.
The frogs, toads, hedgehogs and birds -especially fledglings - have plenty of time to move away from it and there's no risk if any of them getting caught up by the blades.
|
Fledgling Baby Robin |
To us, it does appear to give a better cleaner cut rather than tearing the grass.
It was less expensive than other powered mowers we have purchased in the past.
As it has a smaller footprint than most powered mowers it is easier to store and takes up less space.
We can carry it easily as it is not too heavy, though it is sturdy.
The manual lawnmower feels safer around wildlife, pets and children as there are no wires for them to get caught up in or trip over. There is no electricity to worry about and no fast-moving blades. We do take all the usual safety precautions of course.
|
Hedgehog In Our Garden |
I do think that if you have a very large lawn a manual lawnmower will take more time to achieve the task. While it is perfectly possible to cut a large lawn with a manual lawn mower you will need to decide if you wish to do that.
We find you need to cut a little more often than with a powered mower as it is much easier to cut shorter grass than longer grass with it.
If you attach the grassbox you may need to empty it more often, but I think if you cut more often this would not be an issue.
Long grass will be more difficult to cut and certainly take more effort. Little and often is easier to cut than letting the grass grow longer which makes it harder to cut and then does require more physical power.
It is not so good at cutting wet grass as it does take more effort and seems to clog up more easily, but we rarely try to cut wet grass anyway even with our powered mowers, preferring to cut it when it is dry.
We will need to sharpen the blades every few years with our size lawn, but given the saving in electricity, this will not be a cost issue.
Ours does have a roller but many manual mowers won't have rollers, so stripes will be more difficult to achieve. If this is important to you check that you can achieve stripes with it. If you want one with a roller function do check all the specifications.
If you are considering a manual lawn mower do research properly what is important to you in a lawnmower. We bought a Bosch Manual Lawnmower and there are many more choices that are equally suitable.
Here are a few available on Amazon to browse. Do consider what you need in a manual lawn mower and read all the specifications carefully.
Great States lawnmower
In summary, we are both really happy with our Bosch manual lawn mower. We have owned it for nearly a year now with no issues at all and are very content that we never need to worry about it breaking down or not starting.
We don't worry about wires or electricity costs. We have no need to worry about safety with wildlife or pets or children getting caught up in the wires or blades. Obviously, the blades are sharp so you would take all the usual precautions regarding children and any type of machinery.
We find it a gentle, easy, quiet way to mow our smallish lawn that is environmentally and wildlife-friendly and does not annoy us or the neighbours.

A scenic view in October from Kinzua Area |
Fall will be upon us. Sunny cool days and the leaves will be turning so many beautiful colors. We live in Western New York not far from the Kinzua Dam.
Every year when the
leaves are at their peak, we take the drive down I86 East, from there we take
some back roads into Pennsylvania, through the Allegheny National Forest to the
Kinzua Area, the ride is breathtakingly scenic.
If you are in the process of planning a fall vacation, consider the Kinzua Dam. The dam is located about 6 miles east of Warren Pennsylvania, along route 59 nestled in the 500,000 acres of the Allegheny National Forest. I’m going to include a little history and all the fun activities in the Kinzua area.
So, if you like
camping, hiking, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, boating, or just relaxing and taking in the
views it’s all here at Kinzua. If you’re the outdoors type pack your bags and
get ready for some breathtaking views and fun. First here is some history of
the area.
Construction began in
1960 by the US Army Corps of Engineers and was completed in 1965. The main
purpose of the dam was for flood control on the Allegheny River. Kinzua
controls drainage on a watershed of 2,180 square miles.
Several side benefits
from the construction of the dam include drought control, hydroelectric power
production, and recreation. The dam created Pennsylvania’s deepest lake, the
Allegheny Reservoir, also known as Kinzua Lake.
The cost was
approximately $108 million. According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, the dam
paid for itself in 1972 when tropical storm Agnes’s heavy rains on the
watershed brought the reservoir to within three feet of its maximum capacity.
Downstream flood
damage would have been devastating at an estimated $247 million. The Kinzua Dam
has saved an estimated $1 billion in flood damages since it became operational.
There are many
recreational activities at the Allegheny Reservoir and the surrounding area. If
you’re the outdoors type, then there is something here for you. Along the
reservoir, there is camping, boating, fishing, hiking, and a beach. If you’re the winter
type there is snowmobiling and cross country skiing along the trails.
The US Forest Service
has four reservoir campgrounds and five primitive (boat to or hike only)
camping areas. Most of the recreation areas surround Allegheny Lake.
We love to go
there any time of the year and soak in the beautiful scenery and walk the
trails. Since we live in Western New York, which is not so far from Kinzua,
it’s a nice drive, especially in the fall.
Hiking Trails and Beautiful Scenic Views
There are many scenic overlooks at Kinzua. There are two areas that we never miss
and never tire of visiting, they are Jake’s Rock and Rim Rock. The intro photo of this article was taken from Rim Rock.
The views from these overlooks
are beautiful any time of the year, but we prefer to go in the fall when the
views are breathtaking. We have been there many times and it’s always the same,
“Beautiful”
Did You Know That Johnny Cash recorded a song about the Kinzua Dam?
As a tribute to the
Seneca Nation of Indians, Johnny Cash recorded, As Long as the Grass Will Grow. The
construction of the Dam forced 600 Seneca Indians to relocate because 10,000
acres of their land had to be flooded.
This land had been
occupied by the Seneca Nation since the treaty of 1794. President Kennedy had
been asked to halt the project but declined because of the need for flood
control.
President Kennedy
ordered government agencies to assist in finding land for the placement of the
Seneca Nation of Indians.
If you are a fan on
Johnny Cash here is the song

A Personal Review of Ten Ways to Manage Stress and Anger |
Unfortunately, nobody gets to live a stress-free life.
Personally speaking, life has handed me buckets of stress. Keeping myself centered has been an active, neverending exercise.
My Top Ten Ways to Manage Stress & Anger
What's great about this technique is, you can do it anywhere. If you're out-and-about and are dealing with a difficult situation or even have a stressful thought, start taking those slow deep breaths. I like to do this to the count of six; count slowly to six as you breathe in and slowly to six as you breathe out.
If you're able to physically remove yourself from a stressful situation, then do it. Take a short walk or remove yourself from the space where the problem or stress persists. If you have to be around the person, or problem, revert to quiet deep breathing exercises. Just focus on your breath so that you're not consumed with negative thoughts. Ultimately walking away, and deep breathing provides you with a distraction.
The "twenty-four hour rule" is a calming method used in sports with parents. Give it twenty-four hours before you complain to the coach about a matter pertaining to your child. Time offers perspective. It's a terrific technique for all aspects of life.
For me, this one works best most of the time. I need to burn off my stress, which normally involves a bike ride or pedaling like a maniac on the Cubii, conveniently located under my desk. By the way, if you haven't heard of the Cubii, I highly recommend it.
This one works well for a friend of mine. She's able to perform a task, read, or watch a movie to get her mind off a stressful situation. For me, this doesn't work. However, if you're able to free your mind of a problem using a movie or book as a distraction, go for it!
I use this one most of the time. Even though I'm in a stressful situation, I pray for others, and I pray continuously. I go through each person individually, asking for specific things about their life and their needs. By taking the focus off of myself, I find peace and a bit more understanding.
Play positive music or messages. Use headphones to block out the rest of the world. The negativity surrounding us can be overwhelming, never mind adding a stressful moment or event to the mix! Battle that with positive words. Fight the dark energy with light energy.
I do practice this one. When I'm upset with another person, I actively remember my own mistakes throughout life, and remind myself of my flaws. I try very hard not to give myself anger-freebies and actively reflect upon the mistakes I've made throughout life. When I think about my faults, I have kinder thoughts about the person I'm upset with.
Most of us tend to blow up an issue into tangents when pissed off with another person. We start thinking about every other little thing the person did as well as the immediate issue. I think women tend to do this more? When I'm upset about one particular issue, after fuming for a bit, I remember to focus on the issue that needs tending; not a lifetime of issues. Even if other matters have been brushed under the table for a future date to solve, I try to remember to focus on the issue at hand. Not easy.
9. It's O.K. To Be Mad for a While
Allow yourself the time you need to get past the anger stage. You have a right to go through this step! When I'm stressed or upset, especially if it involves another person, I let myself feel those emotions so that I can get past them. When I'm ready, I practice many of the tips I featured above; deep breathing, prayer, music, and so on.
Not all problems have a solution, but some do. When you've regrouped and you're past the anger stage, begin the solution process. Unfortunately, only you know what that is. I use this one measure as a guide; if the solution is mutual it's potentially a good start.
Bonus Tip Number 11: If you are wrong, apologize.
Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor. This isn't professional medical advice. Like most moms, I'm just a mother and grandmother with life experience, sharing my personal tips and discoveries.

For as long as I can remember, I have struggled with keeping up with my camera lens caps. I am not normally clumsy, but my lens caps just seem to slip through my fingers and fall to the ground just as I am trying to capture the perfect shot.
Not only can fumbling with the camera lens cap cause me to lose the opportunity for a great picture, dropping it in dirt can get the lens cap dusty. That pretty much negates the purpose of having a lens cap. After all, I don't wish to press dirt or dust against my camera lens.
Normally, I wear jeans and my camera vest when we go hiking. If I am taking a panoramic photo of a landscape, I simply slip my camera lens in a pocket. However, if I spot an animal along the trail, I tend to "flip" the cover off the lens in a hurry. Needless to say, that is how it ends up on the ground instead of in my pocket.
I've also managed to drop and lose lens caps in our vehicles. They just seem to gravitate to unknown crevices or fall into the dark abyss, otherwise known as under the seat.
Extreme annoyance with these pesky, unruly covers sent me on a search for a leash to keep them close at hand. I demand, no more runaways!
Obviously, I am not alone in this game of "find the fallen lens cover" because I quickly located exactly what I needed. You, too, may feel you need a remedy. If so, I can highly recommend this easy to attach lens cap leash.
These camera lens cap leashes have one end that sticks to the lens cap cover and the other end is an elastic strap that stretches snugly around the lens itself. This simple invention works like a charm! Plus, the lens cap leashes are extremely inexpensive.
Stop your lens cap struggle today! If only every annoyance was this
easy to eliminate.
In Mid-August we usually start thinking about the Canadian National Exhibition! It seems that it also heralds the beginning of the AUTUMN SEASON! Now this year there is no Exhibition, but I can tell you that I already feel the changes in the air!
Most of the time the problem with this climate change is that it's hot through the day and it can be quite chilly at night. If you are sleeping, that is no problem, but if you are still outdoors enjoying the last bits of summer, it can become quite uncomfortable in shorts and a T-shirt!
So what can you do to make that transition easier? Well, I for one, have found that "HOODIES" seem to be the answer in many instances.
Who would have thought that a Grandmother of 4 would be wearing a HOODIE?
Well I'm here to let you know that they are (in my humble opinion) a Fashion Must Have!
Hoodies are usually fabricated out of materials similar to Sweatpants, or a Fleecy type fabric. They are either pullover style or front zipped. Pullover styles usually have one large pocket (commonly referred to as a Kangaroo Pocket) in the center front shared by both hands, where the zipped style usually has two individual pockets. All "Hoodies" have the aforementioned hood too to keep your head warm!
When the evenings turn cool, a nice warm Hoodie is the answer to the changing seasons.
Amazon has Hoodies Galore! You can start by checking them out right here! I mean lots and lots of styles and sizes, so that everyone in the family can spend those extra hours outdoors without feeling the chill in the air.
There are many other places to get Hoodies too! Hoodies can run from $10.00 to over $100.00! What a price range that is! Why? Well many people, kids and adults like to make a statement with what they wear. Hoodies with bright copyrighted logos are very popular among the "In Crowd".
Shein has hoodies for the whole family and prices are affordable or not! The choice is yours! Let's just say that if you want to make a fashion statement, it might cost you more than if you just want a Hoodie to keep you warm without the fuss of a distinct design.
What your "Hoodie" says about you is entirely up to you! There are just so many choices and all of them are sure to keep you nice and warm when that weather changes.
You might even find that you love that "Kangaroo Pocket", it's a great place to keep your phone, keys and a couple of dollars too, just in case the Ice Cream Truck rolls by!

Here's hoping that you enjoy these last weeks of the summer and are ready for the changing of the seasons! It will be happening sooner than you think!
Author Barbara Hemphill, a professional organizer, has written several books dealing with clutter. This one I am reviewing – Taming the Paper Tiger – deals with MY biggest bug-a-boo – PAPER.

I found several key points that 'spoke' to me when I first began to utilize the tips in this book to get control of my paperwork.
One tip I particularly liked was the reminder to 'forget' about the backlog. Barbara states that to develop an effective paper management system starts with stop feeling guilty about yesterday's piles. Instead, do something with TODAY'S. In other words, start with today's mail and work backwards.
![]() |
Source: Pixabay |
We all know about sorting into related piles your bills, action papers, reference papers, to read pile and to write pile, family records and – that very difficult to control pile because we (and the kids) never want any of their work thrown away – the children's papers. The author gives us outlines of each of these in this book, which all makes sense as soon as we (I) admit that I am a “Paperholic”.

So, if stacks of papers are encroaching on your space or you frequently move piles of paper from one side of the desk (or room) to the other or you plan to 'sort' everything out as soon as you have some time, than you may find Barbara Hemphill's book Taming the Paper Tiger exactly what you need to read. Her paper management system and strategies are very helpful.
Additionally, Barbara Hemphill has also written other paper organizing books, including 'for the home' and 'for the office' and 'at work', whether you work in an office or from home. If you need to know what to toss and how to find the rest, she also has a book about that.
Whatever your paper management needs are, Taming the Paper Tiger and Barbara Hemphill's other management system books will prove to be beneficial to anyone, like me, who finds 'dealing with paper' overwhelming.
*Reviewer's Note: The book I own is simply called 'Taming the Paper Tiger'. It is the fourth edition published in 1997. The current book available is called "Taming the Paper Tiger at Home" - Fifth Edition. Same book with expanded title and different cover.

There is no doubt that our family loves pasta. We enjoy
making our own homemade pasta whenever time allows.
We have had and used, our Atlas pasta machine for years, and
with this machine, you can make different types of noodles. With everybody’s
busy schedules we don’t always have the time to make the dough, roll it out and
run it through the machine.
It was just after Christmas 2020 when I was flipping
through the television channels, and I came across Emeril Lagasse’s
infomercial for his Pasta & Beyond machine.
I immediately stopped flipping the channels, number one
because I like Emeril Lagasse and number two, I love homemade pasta. I’m usually
not an impulse buyer, but after watching the infomercial I knew that I had to
have this.
I bought the complete system, which includes a shredder, a slicer,
a meat grinder, a slow juicer, and a frozen treat maker. This post is about the
pasta machine, as I have not tried the others yet. Although, my daughter did
use the meat grinder and she liked its performance.
The pasta machine
Liquid measuring cup
Dry measuring cup
Mixing Chamber
Pasta Discs (8 different types of pasta)
Spatula/cleaning tool
Cleaning brush
A recipe book that includes so many pasta recipes, and there
is even a gluten-free pasta recipe.
Penne
Spaghetti
Linguine
Tagliatelle
Udon (This is one I haven't had before)
Angel Hair
Fettucine
Lasagna
Making homemade pasta with this machine is so easy. You
just add the dry ingredients into the mixing chamber. Prepare the wet ingredients
in the provided measuring cup. Turn on the machine according to the
instructions. Then, add the wet ingredients slowly through the mixing chamber
lid.
The machine will mix for about 5 minutes and then it will
go in reverse to begin extruding the pasta. The best part is that you can have
homemade pasta on the table in about 30 minutes.
If you are in a pasta-making mood the pasta is easy to freeze. Make a few pounds of your favorite, freeze it, and have homemade pasta anytime. The machine is also very easy to clean.
