Review of National Marshmallow Toasting Day

Toasting marshmallows over a campfire

This is the perfect holiday to top off a summer vacation.  It is held each year on August 30, so enjoy an end-of-summer vacation by taking a camping trip or having a backyard bonfire (perhaps around your fire pit or outdoor fireplace) and toast marshmallows.

The marshmallow is a type of confectionery made from sugar, water, and gelatin (whipped to a solid, but soft, consistency) then coated with corn starch. It is used as a filling in baking.  It is also molded into shapes. You can buy marshmallows by the bag or make your own with this recipe here on the Food Network.

Marshmallow Treat

The most popular way to eat a marshmallow is in a S'mores!  Nothing better than a night around a campfire, singing songs, enjoying the outdoors, and topping it off with this sweet treat.

Chocolate candy bar

Honey Graham Crackers

Marshmallows

Instructions:

Break off a square of Graham cracker

Add a piece of Chocolate.

Toast a big marshmallow over the campfire.

Add the hot marshmallow.

Top it with another graham Cracker.

Eat , savor and enjoy!

Note: For wintertime or anytime you cannot go camping, you can make S'mores in the microwave. Just put them together and pop them into the microwave on high for 15 to 20 seconds.

  1. Oh this is a wacky, but wonderful day! I don't know anyone who hasn't enjoyed a s'mores over a campfire or fire pit. It's a great day to celebrate the end of summer holidays for most people. Hopefully though we will get many more days to celebrate these wonderful goodies! Thanks for the recipes too!

  3. I love toasted marshmallows! I have wonderful memories of using coat hangers to hold the marshmallows over the open campfire, then popping the warm marshmallow in my mouth. As a adult, I think about those old coat hangers and wonder if they were the best choice for a holder, but they sure worked great over the open fire. You might be surprised to learn that I have never eaten a s'more. For me, it was all about the marshmallow! Perfect end of the summer celebration day.

  4. I’ve always adored toasted marshmallows. Since I grew up in Manhattan, we used to toast them over the flames of a gas stovetop burner to make S’mores when I was a kid, (Setting fire to wood in Central Park wasn’t an option!) When I was in high school and my parents bought a house in upstate New York, where we spent summers and many weekends, we were able to roast marshmallows properly - skewered on long twigs over a campfire (of sorts). I remember enjoying the challenge of roasting my ‘mallows slowly enough to get them to an even, deep golden brown all over (for maximum gooey-ness) and timing their removal just right so they made it into to the waiting, Hershey Bar-lined pairs graham crackers before the gooey, melted, marshmallowy goodness dropped off the twig and was lost to the fire. Happy memories, indeed!

Much as I loved S’mores, however, I often chose to savor a perfectly roasted marshmallow unadorned.

A wacky holiday this may be, but I’m a fan!

  5. Lol, you're killing me with this article. I'm currently craving something sweet, open this page, and bingo! craving is worse. I'm loving this national day, lol, and had no idea it existed. Kind of a fun theme for a party on August 30th.

  6. I love marshmallows but resist bringing them home now that there are only two of us to eat them. You sure made me want to go against that 'rule.'
