Watermelon Day Review

Watermelon Day is celebrated each year on August 3rd to enjoy that juicy summertime staple, the watermelon. It is an ancient berry feast dating back to Ancient Egypt. Others say it originated in tropical Africa.  Whichever is true, watermelon cultivation is at least 4,000 years old.

It is so refreshing because it is 92% water. This makes the watermelon a good thirst quencher, something definitely needed in the hot days of August and throughout the summer.

Some call it a fruit; others think it is a vegetable.  In fact, it is the official vegetable of the state of Oklahoma.

Watermelon can be a tasty food as seen in recipes found doing a Google Search. Simply made with watermelon slices, other favorite fruits (like strawberries and blueberries) and yogurt, giving you a tasty dessert or a fun appetizer for a summertime picnic.

Crafty Watermelons

The watermelon is popular with crafters.  Here are a few fun ones.

Beverage Coasters are an easy way to decorate your table for any holiday or home decor, plus being a practical item to protect your furniture. They are made with 100% cotton fabric and there is a layer of cotton batting for extra protection for your furniture. They are approximately 5" x 5" square.

These watermelon coasters and many other themes are available in Kathie's Etsy Shop she calls CutePurseNalities.

Summary

National Watermelon Day is an unofficial holiday with no known origin. It may have been begun by watermelon farmers, or by the National Watermelons Day. No matter who came up with the idea to celebrate the watermelon on August 3rd, it remains a refreshing summer snack that is naturally healthy.

  1. I’m so jealous of people who can enjoy the delicious, sweet, refreshing taste of this beloved and healthy traditional summer treat! Unfortunately, I’m extremely allergic to it, so I haven’t had it in decades. Watermelon is also a feast for the eyes!

    1. Sorry your allergy keeps you from enjoying watermelon, Margaret. If truth be told, I actually dislike watermelon, but am glad the rest of my family likes it.

  3. Happy Watermelon Day! I absolutely love watermelon. I admit, when I eat watermelon, I need a bib myself and lots of napkins. When it is watermelon eating time, I believe in the all hands on deck method (I don't use a fork unless I am in public). All of the watermelon crafts are adorable. The table runner and potholder would be perfect for a cookout. You already know I have a soft-spot for potholders. They serve a dual purpose. Potholders make excellent kitchen decor as well as protecting us from burns.

    1. Thanks, Mouse. Glad you enjoy this refreshing treat. When I decided to feature a story about Watermelon Day, I just had to make that potholder and magnets set to share. You know I think of everything either in crafting form or as it pertains to baseball ~ my two great loves. :)

  4. We both love watermelon. I really miss having the extra refrigerator in an outbuilding for keeping large things cold. Now that we're down to just the fridge in the house, there's no longer room for a big watermelon so we can only get the small ones. I wonder if they make those watermelon bibs in adult sizes. I'd love to get my husband one for his approaching BD.

  6. We love watermelon here, too. I usually end up cutting it into bite size pieces so we can grab one as we pass by the bowl that sits on the counter. It is a great thirst quencher and tasty bite on a hot day.
