The Spirit of Animal Healing - Book Review

dog and kitty sleeping next to each other

As I sit here reflecting on The Spirit of Animal Healing, I find my mind fixed on Finn and Blessing.  Engaging in the healing journeys of these dogs has taught, and is teaching, me much about the nature of wellness and how to be an agent of healing.  Though Dr. Marty Goldstein's new book touches on many essential aspects of holistic, or integrative animal care, I cannot imagine anything much more important than his emphasis on invoking the residual healing properties that exist within all living creatures.

Healing and well-being are not so much about disease.  They are about the elements that enable body, mind, and spirit to work together with appropriate therapies to move systems toward a natural balance.  Dr. Marty speaks about the combined power of all types of good medicine: the right nutrition, supplements, and immune system boosters that prevent unnecessary illness and promote quality of life.

Some of the topics covered in The Spirit of Animal Healing, in addition to the three mentioned above, include: homeopathic medicine, nutraceuticals, acupuncture, vaccinations, cancer, pet food, magnetic wave therapy, and the importance of finding an integrative veterinarian who will come to intimately know your animal.

As one who interacts on a daily basis with rescue animals in great need of healing, I found this to be a valuable and thought-provoking read.  Even though I constantly consume books about animal health, I found much that engaged me in new ways.  I was particularly taken with the discussion about Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEFT) and the Schumann Resonance.  To learn how the earth's electromagnetic waves and the resonant frequency of the atmosphere are thought to be the frequency of life itself was astounding.  Even DNA sequences communicate at that same frequency of 7.83 Hz.  Stunning!

There is so much yet to discover about healing.  Dr. Goldstein encourages us to be open to every possible avenue of healing and to seek the sweet spot between conventional and alternative, or integrative, medical practices that have the potential to help our animals thrive.

I wish to thank NetGalley, and St. Martin's Press, for the opportunity to preview The Spirit of Animal Healing.  I received a digital galley of this book in exchange for an honest review.

  1. The Spirit of Animal Healing appears to be a wonderful book for you to read, Diana, what with all your work with rescue animals. The animals you work with need good physical care, but also, I would imagine, often the emotional love and caring side of any good medicine. Anything that helps animals thrive is good medicine. Thanks so much for your interesting book review today.

    1. This is my kind of book, for sure. You are so right about the importance of the emotional aspects of good medicine. So much of healing depends on that strong connection between what animals feel in my presence. I've learned that animals feel things deeply. The physical needs are often much easier to see. The inner elements of healing must be intuited by paying close attention to what an animal is trying to tell me.

  2. Sounds like a perfect book for anyone who love animals, and who doesn't love animals? I believe in the magnetic wave therapy. There was, and I think still is a company called Nikken that made and sold magnetic therapy, they were based in Japan. I've seen it work on many of my friends with amazing results, and have used some of the products myself. As always a wonderful review.

    1. Thanks for sharing your experiences with magnetic wave therapy, Sam. I am fascinated by what I am just starting to learn about it. In the book, vets found that a horse with an injured leg would walk over without direction to place the injury against the magnetic wave machine. Amazing!

    1. Thanks, Mary Beth. Have you found a new fur baby to adopt?

  4. When I first read the title, I immediately thought of how animals heal us and the how having them as companions calms us and makes us happier people in general. How awesome that I was wrong about the content and it is a book about really taking care of them! So often, we just don't know what to do for our pups since they can't really talk to us. I love the practice of preventing illness or any problems. I'm sure I would enjoy this book as well. Thank you for the recommendation.

    1. You are used to me writing about animal therapy and the ways we are healed by our animals. It was time to flip things and spotlight what we can do for our beloved pets. They count on us to give them the best possible odds for living longer, happier, and healthier lives. This book helps us do just that.

  5. Oh Diana I so agree with you and the doctor in the idea that we have yet to find out all the properties that allow us and animals to heal. You are in the perfect place to put his insights to work and anyone who has followed Finn and Blessing know that there is much still to learn. Thanks for bringing this book to light!

    1. Healing is such a magnificent thing when we open ourselves to all of the possibilities and all of the channels. I do aspire, each and every day, to be an instrument of healing. I know that is true of you, as well.

  6. Diana, I have been fortunate to have learned quite a bit about integrative medicine and holistic healing through my personal work with a gifted holistic healing practitioner and through my research into integrative healing therapies and so-called “alternative medicine” techniques while working on a writing project for a client a couple of years ago. While I have nothing but respect for, and gratitude toward, the many wonderful physicians who have cared for me over the decades, I have increasingly become aware that Western medical training has historically focused more on diagnosing and treating symptoms than on looking for and addressing the underlying root causes of those symptoms. I imagine this is true in veterinary medicine as well. Our bodies, minds, and spirits, and those of all sentient creatures, are inextricably interwoven, and are more than just sophisticated machines to be diagnosed and repaired. Taking a functional medicine and holistic health approach to healing and overall well-being makes so much sense, and can prevent future issues as well as treating past or current ones. The animals in our care are dependent on us to learn about and provide for their optimal health and well-being. As you can tell, both the premise of this book and your wonderful review really struck a chord with me.

    1. I knew you would "get it," Margaret. So well said. Dr. Marty would love what you have written here. He was on the front edge of veterinary integrative medicine and nearly lost his license for it (and faced an incredible amount of resistance from those classically trained). Even though Dr. Goldstein went through conventional medical training, he had early epiphanies that brought him to this place of enlightened practice. I'm glad this struck a chord with you. We often hear the same music.

  7. You have me quite curious now about PEFT. There's so much to learn about health and healing for animals and humans. I'm very open to new ways of approaching health while still listening to the doctor (to a point, lol, I'm not the greatest patient). I'm not as familiar with natural healing approaches for animals, however, from the sounds of your article it seems the same. We use magnetics in our home (not electromagnetics lol) in our mattresses. When I was studying all about that a lifetime ago, I was shocked how and why they worked. I'd like to read this book.

    1. I'm with you... so curious now about PEFT. I remember when wearing magnets first came to light. I didn't know what to think about it. Now, we know so much more about the benefits of magnetics. It just goes to show we must remain open to exploration. Here's to constant learning and healing.

  8. Thank you for this wonderful review about The Spirit of Animal Healing book. It sounds a fascinating book about animal healing. There is still so much to learn about healing in general and it applies to humans and animals alike. We should not become blinkered but always be open to how healing might occur or be helped. I believe it is essential to find the root cause of illness and to help the whole animal (or person)enabling mind and body to heal together.

    1. Healing is all about openness, and learning, and hope, and getting to the truth of what ails us (or the one in our care). Thank you for joining in on the conversation. I appreciate your presence here and comments.

  10. Yes. Anyone devoted to their animals will likely wish to learn more about the wellness advances that can enhance, and extend, the lives of beloved animal companions.
