Toilet Paper Brand Comparison

Review and Comparison of Popular Toilet Paper Brands

http://reviewthispersonalreviews.blogspot.com/2016/01/toilet-paper-brand-comparison.html
Choosing the right toilet paper isn't always easy.  You don't really know if a toilet paper will be effective or tolerable until you try it.

Don't you hate it when you use the "facilities" and you're just certain the toilet paper is recycled sand paper or army surplus?

In this review,  we will compare 3 different brands to determine which one is the best choice to purchase. We might not be able to change what we have to use when we are away from home, but we can definitely make sure we have picked our own favorite, and most comfortable, paper for home.

Toilet Paper Brand Cost Comparison

All Packages Contain 12 Double/Big Rolls

We will start with the cost comparison because, for most of us, that is extremely important in today's economy.  Plus, you need to compare packages by square footage, cost per square footage, and not just the sticker price.

The winner of the Cost Comparison, Quilted NORTHERN would appear to barely squeak by with a $.60 savings per package.  However, once you compare square footage, you see that it is actually a much greater value for your money than the cost would  indicate.

Not only is Quilted Northern the lowest price for a 12 double roll package, it also has the most sq. ft. per package, which would actually increase the overall savings.   (approximately .15½  per sq.ft. compared to nearly .18 per sq. ft.)

If you also consider whether the toilet tissue is 1 ply or 2 ply, which could mean you would have to double the sheets to equally evaluate them, then you find Quilted Northern has a substantially greater lead financially over the others.

They appear close in price, but all things considered, they really are not all that close.

Quilted Northern   ~ 300 2 ply sheets/Roll ~ 450 sq. ft.    ~ $6.99
Charmin Tissue    ~ 200 2 ply sheets/Roll ~ 284.6 sq. ft. ~ $7.59
Cottonelle Tissue ~ 308 1 ply sheets/Roll ~ 430.8 sq. ft. ~ $7.69

Prices may vary in your area

The Toilet Paper Touch Test

After polling our panel of judges we found the following results of in our Touch Test:

Cottonelle was raspy
Northern was soft
Charmin was fabric soft

The winner of the Touch Test is CHARMIN

Absorbency Analogy

For the absorbency analysis we poured 1/2 teaspoon of water on 5 squares of each of our contestants.

The winner of this test was easily:   CHARMIN

Additional Note:  When we lifted the wet toilet tissue, the counter under the Cottonelle was wet.  The counter under the Northern was damp.  The counter under the Charmin was totally dry.

Our Recommendations

If money isn't an issue and your want the best, splurge on:  CHARMIN

If money is a consideration, a good choice would be:  Quilted NORTHERN

If you want your guests to leave early, or if you own a gas station, then buy:  COTTONELLE
(We do love their puppy!)

  1. Chuckle - what a fun analysis this was to read. Must remember the Cottenelle recommendation when those unwanted guests arrive!

    1. So very glad I could make you laugh Susan! We all need a bit of humor in our lives. I must say, I was actually surprised at the final analysis. I honestly didn't expect such a drastic difference in brands.

  2. Love the comparison of toilet tissues. Softness is my highest requirement - touch is more important to me than cost or size of package/roll. It's also important that the tissues be strong enough not to fall apart while using. :)

  3. "if you own a gas station" LOL. Thanks for the review. Have never spent the $ on Charmin. Maybe now I will.

    1. I couldn't resist the gas station comment Heather! I hate having to use the facilities in a gas station. Normally, their tp is like sand paper. I think that is their plan. If you don't make it too comfortable, perhaps people will go over to McDonald's for their rest room stop :) They will buy gas regardless. lol

  4. Great review Cynthia. My parents once owned a gas station, and I dare say, you're right. (LOL) I agree, the puppy is worth mentioning!

    1. Oh, no! That is so funny! Thank you for being so good-natured about my little service station joke. I also appreciate you stopping by and leaving a comment Fay. It is always good to see you :)

  5. Loved the puppy mention! Bet that little guy sells a lot of paper. Interesting that you performed this comparison, Cynthia. I've been comparing t.p. recently, too. How frequently we have to replace the roll actually factored into our comparison. Mostly, though, I wanted to know if it was worth it to order through Amazon's Subscribe and Save program, saving 5 to 15% on the cost based on how many other subscription items on my list in a particular month, or if I should just trot on down to handy-dandy Walmart (where prices on items like this do tend to be low (they shop by the tractor trailer's worth, after all). After tiring of the comparisons, I finally settled on what I think is a good deal and that is the Quilted Northern through Subscribe and Save. I qualified for the 15% discount when I ordered, so now I have our first case of t.p. stored in two bathrooms and will see how long it will be until I order again (the Subscribe and Save program is adjustable, month to month). Your readers should find it pretty easy to locate the S&S option for the t.p. of their choice, if they're interested, using your links above.

  7. Oh I just loved this review! Right now, we use Charmin. We used to use Cottonelle but began to find that it actually irritated our skin. I haven't tried the Quilted Northern but I think I will, just to see if we could save a little money.

  8. Miss Mouse, you are too funny! Love it! We don't have Charmin in Canada...hummmmm

  9. I have always liked Charmin, but we usually wind up buying Kirkland because it's convenient. Maybe we should test it against Charmin.

  10. My brand won, LOL except for the price point. However, if you only buy your toilet tissue on sale then maybe that takes care of that pesky little detail? Great review.
