Honey Walnut Drops Recipe
1 c. sugar
1 c. honey
2/3 c. shortening
3 eggs
3 ¾ c. flour
1 tsp. Salt
1 c. commercial sour cream
1 c. chopped walnuts
¾ c. flaked coconut
1 tsp. Vanilla
1 tsp. soda
Directions:
Drop teaspoonfuls on greased cookie sheet. Top each cookie with walnut half and coconut.
Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes.
*Yield not given in this recipe, but I got about 6 dozen cookies from my batch.
PS: I did not have any extra walnuts, so did not top the cookies with a one-half walnut. Lots of walnuts IN the cookies, though.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: This cookie recipe was published in this Garden City cookbook in 1979, so no nutritional information is included of the kind you often find in today's recipes (such as calories, fat grams, carbs, etc.), in case you were wondering. :-). Considering the ingredients, I am sure there are a 'number' of calories in it, but, after all, it is a cookie!
Old Joke: Did you know that if you break a cookie in half before eating, all the calories 'fall out'? LOL.

Oh this would be something I would like too. Walnuts and coconut are two of my favorite ingredients too. I'm not much of a baker though. But when I see a recipe that seems easy, I will give it my best shot! This recipe because it included two of my favorite tastes will be bumped up on my list of "must try" cookies. Thanks for this!

ReplyDeleteThose hometown church cookbooks are such fun, Sam. Some of the older basic recipes are still the best. Let me know how you like these cookies if you try the recipe. They are more of a cake-like cookie than the flatter chewy cookies. Sort of a coconut/walnut blond brownie in texture. The recipe made so many cookies that I gave away 3 dozen to family & neighbors. :)

DeleteOh, I love these old community cookbooks! They are such a treasure trove of wonderful recipes. I have even purchased a few from antique stores because I found one recipe in them that I wish to try. I bet my husband would love these honey walnut cookies. He is crazy about walnuts & honey. DeleteOh my they look good. I love these community cookbooks as well. Our hometown did one in the 1970s or earlier and I use it all the time. The cover and book design is very similar to yours!
ReplyDeleteI figured most everyone would be familiar with community and/or church cookbooks, Barbara. Usually a picture of the hometown church on the front and the name of the town. :) My mother-in-law, who gave me this cookbook, was a great collector of cookbooks, which went along with the great cook that she was.
