Reviewing Bob Ross Color Changing Mug

Color Changing Mug

My husband is one of those people that is hard to find a gift for special occasions.  He is well into his retirement years and really has most everything he needs or wants.  My kids and I are always looking for something different that he would enjoy.  As his birthday approached this year, I was again challenged to find a gift for him, when I was browsing on Amazon and found this Bob Ross mug.

My husband thoroughly enjoys watching "The Joy of Painting".  On this program, Bob Ross, with his delightful sense of humor, instructs listeners on how to paint landscape paintings. Bob Ross has long passed on, but his program can be found in syndication on the television programming, and he has become a pop culture icon.

When I found the mug, I decided it would be perfect for my husband.  The mug depicts a photo of Bob Ross with a solid black background, as seen in the photo below.   When the cup is filled with hot liquids the black background becomes a beautiful landscape photo.

Here is the link to this unique mug on Amazon Bob Ross Mug

How Does the Color Changing Work

I checked online to find out how the color changing works.  To put it simply it is done by using the principal of thermochromism which involves heat sensitive paint.  In the case of the mug the landscape painting would be painted on the mug with heat sensitive paint.  It would appear to be solid black until the hot liquid in the mug turns the black into a landscape painting.

More Bob Ross Products on Amazon

If you have a Bob Ross fan you would like to get a gift for a special occasion, then Amazon is the place to go.  I found numerous different Bob Ross gifts on Amazon.  Here are just a few:
  • A variety of different Bob Ross painting kits and painting supplies
  • Prints of Bob Ross paintings
  • TShirts
  • Socks
  • Bob Ross bobblehead
  • calendars
  • Books with step-by-step painting instructions

The Hudson's Bay Company Stripes Collection

Discover The Hudson's Bay Company Stripes Collection.
The Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) was a long-established Canadian retail company with fans in Canada, the United States and around the world. Founded in 1670, it opened its first retail store in Manitoba in 1881 and dominated the Canadian retail scene until 2025, when its operations ground to a full stop. Needless to say, it has been around longer than we have been alive.

Initially known as The Hudson's Bay Company, it rebranded as The Bay in 1965 and as Hudson's Bay in 2013. I am not sure when or why people started calling it HBC, whether that was an official change or just an acronym.

The Canadian Press said, "The affinity Canadians have for Hudson’s Bay is only on par with Tim Hortons." If you are one of those fans of the department store, you probably love the quality merchandise they carried as well as the items that feature the iconic stripes of green, red, yellow and indigo that first appeared on a Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket near the end of the 18th century. The stripes eventually became an emblem for the company adorning an endless assortment of merchandise.

Here's a short news article sharing the story of one lady who has been collecting the striped merchandise for a long time. I love that she even greets the reporter in a striped HBC coat. My mother, though not a collector, is sad that her favorite department store is closing.

Once the store announced that it would be closing, the striped merchandise sold out seemingly overnight. Shoppers visited in mass trying to find something, anything, with those famous stripes. On this page, discover some of the merchandise produced over the decades that is now available from sellers on eBay.

BLANKETS

The Hudson's Bay Company Wool Blankets

The blankets have been made pretty consistently since that first one was made so long ago so you have a choice on eBay. You can buy a new, used, vintage or antique blanket. Be wary that with the demise of the company, these blankets have become very sought after, which translates directly into very expensive. As I write this article in April of 2025, I see a new blanket that sold for an astronomical sum, more than an antique one, which likely would not have been the case in previous years. Discover a collection of the Hudson's Bay Company wool blankets here, on eBay.

COFFEE MUGS

Striped Hudson's Bay Company Coffee Mugs!

As always, I think a coffee mug is a perfect and practical gift idea or souvenir. In this case, an HBC fan can use it everyday to be reminded of their favorite store and the history of the company.  Personally, I like the traditionally shaped mug, white with stripes as shown here, but there are a variety of mugs available on eBay. Discover the Hudson's Bay stripes mugs here, on eBay.

UMBRELLAS

Given the tough job that umbrellas are designed to handle, I don't know how long Hudson's Bay umbrellas will be available but I see three today. If you think you might like to own one of these weather defying tools, click here to see the HBC umbrellas available on eBay right now. That's an item that I could put to good use.

BARBIE DOLLS

Discover HBC's Iconic Stripes Barbie Dolls.
Here is a totally impractical item from the Stripes collection though it is definitely a fun way to celebrate the historic company. There have been a number of Barbies sold by the company but just three, to my knowledge, that are dressed in stripes. The first (not shown here) is the 1996 Barbie School Spirit doll, dressed in a striped coat and hat; the second is the 2016 Limited Edition Silver Label Barbie doll smartly dressed to walk her dog before she heads off to her job in the city; and finally, the 2020 Limited Edition Barbie Signature doll dressed for canoeing in the great Canadian outdoors. There have been other Barbies but these are the ones with stripes. Find your Hudson's Bay Stripes Barbie here on eBay.

MORE STRIPED ITEMS

Who would have thought these striped items would become so sought after? The most popular items are definitely the wool blankets that I mentioned earlier but I can't possibly share all of the other fabulous striped items that are available with you here on this page. If you haven't found exactly the Hudson's Bay item you want, try looking here on eBay where there are more than 532 items with the iconic Hudson's Bay Company stripes available today. Besides the items I have showcased here on this page, I also see jackets, coats, scarves, mittens, hats and socks; bags and jewelry, kitchenware including a Le Creuset Dutch oven; bedding including comforter sets, sheets, throw blankets and cushions, Christmas ornaments, stockings and nutcrackers. You name it, HBC has produced it over the past decades. What would you like to find with the stripes on it?

Oh, by the way, there's a chance the iconic and trademarked 'Stripes' brand could survive in one form or another but for now, if you want some stripes, you need to turn to the resale market.

Happy Hunting!

Drink Dr Pepper HOT

My Dr Pepper Mug
My Favorite Mug for My Favorite Drink

A Review of my Favorite Drink

I love Dr Pepper and for the past 60 years I have had a cup of "hot Dr Pepper" most every morning.  I started when I was a teenager and saw the ads for hot Dr Pepper.  Back then I would pour my Dr Pepper in a saucepan, add a slice of lemon and heat it.  I would then pour it into a cup and enjoy.  In today's microwave world, I pour my Dr Pepper into a mug and heat it for 2 minutes.  I then add either a slice of lemon or lime.  Delicious!!  I don't drink coffee or tea so it is Dr Pepper that helps me to fully wake up each morning.

Fun Facts about Dr Pepper

  • Created in the 1880's by pharmacist Charles Alderton in Waco Texas
  • Name "Dr Pepper first used in 1885 and that preceded Coca-Cola by one year
  • It was introduced nationally at the 1904 St. Louis World Fair (and no I wasn't there, but my grandfather was 😂)
  • Early ads claimed medical benefits "aids digestion and restores vim, vigor and vitality"
  • The formula is a trade secret and is said to be held in two separate Dallas banks -Half of the recipe in each bank safe deposit bank

Advertising for Dr Pepper

Some early ads called for "Dr Pepper Time" at 10, 2, and 4 o'clock.

In the early 1960's Dr Pepper was promoted to be served as a hot drink in the winter months.  The ads showed it being heated up and served with a slice of lemon.

In 1977 lyrics were written for a Dr Pepper jingle called "Be a Pepper" by Jake Holmes.  The chorus of the song goes as follows.
I'm a Pepper, he's a Pepper
She's a Pepper, we're a Pepper
Wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too?
Be a Pepper, Drink Dr Pepper

Dr Pepper Museum

There is a Dr Pepper Museum in Waco Texas.  It was opened in 1991 in downtown Waco.  It has three floors of exhibits and includes a working old-fashioned soda fountain, and a gift store with Dr Pepper memorabilia.  That is where I purchased my mug that you see at the beginning of the photo.  As you can probably tell from the photo my mug is showing some wear, perhaps I need to get a new one!

You Tube Video on Hot Dr Pepper

In researching information on the history of hot Dr Pepper, I found this interesting and humorous video that not only gives you some history on hot Dr Pepper but also shows several of the ads for it.

The Best Cotton-Rich, Athlete-Approved, Comfortable Padded Sport Socks

I'm certainly no athlete, but I do enjoy walking with my husband. Unfortunately, as I've gotten older, walking has become a bit harder on my feet. I have purchased padded socks in the past, but they were too thick to fit comfortably inside my sneakers. My feet are inherently quite wide and I need all the room I can get.

Fortunately, the CS CELERSPORT 6 Pairs Ankle Athletic Running Socks Low Cut Sports Tab Socks for Men and Women I purchased a few months ago on Amazon have nicely cushioned soles without being so thick that they take up unnecessary room inside my sneakers or walking shoes. I also love that they have arch support. Here's my detailed product review.

The Best Comfortable Sport Socks for Walking, Running, Etc.

My friend who enjoys daily hikes for exercise and has three athletic sons highly recommended the CS CELERSPORT Ankle Athletic Running Socks to me for my walks. Her sons, who play lots of sports, love them, and so does she for her daily hikes. In fact, these have replaced the ultra popular and much more expensive Bombas socks in their household!

With their enthusiastic stamp of approval, I decided to take her excellent recommendation to order a set of 6 pairs. I'm so glad I did!

CS CelerSport 6 Pairs of Low-Cut Ankle Athletic Running Socks for Men and Women

These cushioned socks are designed for active men and women seeking comfort, durability, and performance during various activities such as running, gym workouts, hiking, and casual wear. These low-cut socks feature a tab design to prevent slipping, a cushioned sole for shock absorption, and moisture-wicking materials to keep your feet dry.

Key Features

Comfortable Fabric Blend

Made from a blend of 88.3% combed cotton, 10.7% polyester and 1% spandex, these cotton-rich socks are soft, stretchy, and breathable. The blend offers a snug fit without being restrictive, ensuring all-day comfort during walks, workouts or casual wear.

Arch Support

Integrated arch support enhances stability and reduces foot fatigue, making these socks ideal for high-impact activities like running or weightlifting as well as lower-impact activities like walking or hiking. I've definitely noticed a difference in how my feet feel after our walks or even after a day of running errands.

Cushioned Sole

The padding on the sole provides extra comfort and shock absorption. This reduces strain on the feet, especially during long runs or high-intensity workouts, but also making walks and daily activities more comfortable.

Moisture-Wicking Technology

Designed with moisture-wicking fibers, these cotton-rich socks help keep your feet dry by wicking away sweat, reducing the risk of blisters and minimizing foot odor.

Tab Design

The low-cut style features a back tab to prevent the socks from slipping into your shoes. This small addition ensures a secure fit and adds protection against chafing.

Durability

Reinforced heels and toes increase the socks' longevity, even with frequent washing and wear. They have held up extremely well so far and still look like new after a few months of frequent wear.

Unisex Design

Available in multiple sizes and colors, these versatile socks are suitable for both men and women. I ordered a set of two white, two grey and two black pairs, but you can choose from all white, all grey, all black, and several other color options.

CS CelerSport boxed set of 6 pairs of cushioned sport socks
The set of 6 pairs of cushioned sport socks comes nicely boxed for gift-giving. The box slides open for easy access to the socks inside.

Pros

  • Versatile: Ideal for running, sports, and casual use.
  • Stay-Put Fit: Tab design prevents slipping and enhances comfort.
  • Affordable: You get a nicely boxed set of six pairs in your choice of colors at an excellent price.
  • Odor Control: Breathable fabric minimizes sweat buildup.
  • Durability: Reinforced stress points ensure long-term use.

Cons

  • Thickness: While the cushioning is great for comfort, those who prefer thinner socks might find them a bit bulky for tighter shoes. However, even though I have wide feet and need as much room inside my footwear as I can get, I did not find this to be as much of an issue with these socks as I have with other brands of cushioned cotton sport socks.

Who Are They Good For?

The CS CELERSPORT 6 Pairs Ankle Athletic Running Socks are perfect for individuals who prioritize comfort, durability, and moisture control in their activewear.

Whether you're a runner, gym enthusiast, a casual walker, or someone who appreciates comfortable, high-quality socks for daily use, these socks deliver exceptional value.

A Thoughtful, Affordable Gift

If you know someone who enjoys walking, running, or playing any type of sports, these cushioned sport socks would be a welcome gift.

I love that they come nicely boxed and ready for gift-giving.

Reviewing Gifts To Keep Loved Ones Warm In Winter.

Brown and cream Faux fur heated throw

With cold weather fast approaching and along with it rising energy costs many people are concerned how to pay for their energy bills to heat their homes and keep warm. Many people may well be thinking of not putting the heating on so high or so much this winter.

This may especially apply to older people who can feel the cold more, or maybe less able to keep moving around to keep warm. The very old and the very young and those who have conditions or are on medications that  make them feel the cold more will be the most affected in the colder weather.

So I was thinking how to help people in this situation who perhaps will not accept money to help with bills, but who would consider it normal to receive a winter birthday gift or Christmas gift.

While it is important that the heating is on for some part of the day to keep the home free from damp, it might be thoughtful to give a gift of something that will help to keep them warm and cosy this winter. This thoughtfulness may also extend to yourself.

Depending on your budget, some of these suggestions are affordable, others more considered purchases and perhaps the more expensive ones could be purchased by a family or  friends clubbing together for a present. Or you may like to purchase these as a treat for yourself, as we did.

So gifts that are lovely, cosy, warm and beautiful like these can be a lovely thoughtful present for any person to help them keep warmer and more relaxed in the colder months of the year.

Blue with cream fleece heated throw

Heated Throw

The first gift idea and one that we have found very useful is a heated throw. These are blankets or throws that you put on over yourself to keep warm and have a timer facility so you can choose the temperature the throw warms up to and the length of time you have it on.

The best ones have a cut off function once the time is reached so I consider this a vital function, especially for elderly people or anyone just busy, so it cannot over heat or be left on all night.

We have a couple of these throws for use in the living room when watching TV and for one to go over the bed which we put on an hour before bed to warm up the bed and the room. We find that these do heat us up very well and also put some heat into the room which is useful in winter.

One is a Faux Fur heated blanket and one is a Sherpa Fleece Blue heated blanket. They are deliciously cosy! We have used the heating far less since we got these blankets and so saved on our heating bills, while still keeping nice and warm.

Read more about my personal experience of using these in my article Reviewing Benefits And Considerations Of Heated Throws

Warm Wearable Hooded Fleece Blankets.

We have two each of these warm wearable hooded fleece blankets and we really appreciate them in the autumn and winter. Wearing them can certainly delay us needing to put the heating on.

They are great during the day when at home as you can move around freely wearing them, yet you are warm and certainly cosy! However you still feel Ok answering the door to people which I would not be Ok with if I was in a dressing gown! In the evening they are just wonderful and snuggly and so warm.

We especially like to wear them first thing in the morning when getting breakfast and once we settle down for the evening. I also like to wear mine when doing computer work and we both wear them watching TV or playing games in the evenings.

Read More about how we enjoy wearing these in my article Reviewing Warm Wearable Oversized Hooded Blankets

Warm oversized Hooded Fleece Blanket in purple and white

Warm Bedding

In the autumn we start switching out our bedding to warmer fleece and blankets to go with our duvets. It makes more of a difference than you might think and is an easy switch.

As long as you know the persons bed size, a warm bedding set would be a lovely thoughtful gift. I love this Microsoft Sheet Set with a flat sheet, fitted sheet and two pillowcases for its warm, cosy and beautiful look on the bed. This set is available in a wide choice of beautiful colours to suit any person and any bedroom decor. It has deep pocket fitting on the fitted sheet and is machine washable on cold, tumble dry low so easy care

Even if you are not sure of the bed size, then a comforter to go over the bed would be a great gift and less dependant on size especially if you size up so you can be sure it covers the bed.

My friend and contributor Barbara wrote this useful article about her personal experience of owning this Warm Sherpas Comforter Set.

Warm Cosy Bed Socks

I don't know about you but if my feet are cold I am cold. So it is vital to keep feet warm and cosy. There are many choices of lovely bed socks for everyone in different colours . So if you know the persons shoe size a special cosy pair of socks can be a thoughtful gift.

I especially like these Non Skid Gripper Fleece Socks as in addition to being warm and cosy, they have grippers on the soles so are more non slip that most socks and so safer if you forget to put on slippers when you first get out of bed or go to get a drink in the night.

My friend and contributor Olivia writes in her review about how bed socks and the subsequent warm feet can equal a happy marriage ! How Bedsocks Can Equal A Happy Marriage

Non Skid Gripper Fleece SocksCheck Price

Shoulder Wrap Heating Pad

This is a great gift idea especially if you know the person has any shoulder issues or feels the cold around their shoulders.

I know if my shoulders are cold I find it hard to warm up. I carry any tension in my shoulders and a warm wrap does help to relax the muscles. A definite benefit is that you do not need to hold this wrap against your neck, it stays put there by itself!

My friend and contributor Sylvestermouse reviews her personal experience in her article about the Sunbeam Shoulder Wrap Heating Pad.

So a few well chosen gift ideas that we here have found lovely and beneficial can really be a beautiful and warm, lovely present for a loved one who may feel the cold this winter.

Whether it is a Fall/Autumn Birthday present or a Christmas gift or just because you love them, any of these items will help towards keeping you and your loved ones warm and comfortable this winter.

Reviewing Nelsonwood Crochet Hooks

I have just recently received my first handcrafted ergonomic crochet hooks from Nelsonwood and I'm so excited to show them to you. Nelsonwood crochet hooks are handmade, primarily wooden, hooks that are as much pieces of art as they are functional tools for crochet. No two Nelsonwood items could ever be identical, so every hook is a custom artpiece that only you possess.  They feel so velvety smooth that I just want to pet mine, like a calming fidget. Do you think I'm being dramatic?  I would have thought so too had I read this prior to touching and seeing my first Nelsonwood hooks.

Photo of 2 wooden Nelsonwood crochet hooks

Crochet is a fiber art in which items are made using yarn and a hook. Crocheted items can be functional (hats, socks, blankets), unique art pieces and heirlooms (doilies, christening gowns), or fun (shaped pillows, amigurumi, stuffed animals, and costumes).

I enjoy crochet very much and am astounded at some of the intricate art I see crocheters producing. I am a moderately skilled crocheter but my retirement dream is to spend plenty of time sitting on the deck and learning to crochet intricate doily tablecloths, mosaic blankets, and beautiful wearables.

Many crocheters have their favorite brand or style of crochet hooks (and yarns, but that's an entirely different maze of rabbit holes to go down). I recently saw a crochet youtube tutorial in which the artist showed her Nelsoonwood hook. I was so astounded by how beautiful it was that I went directly to the website. It wasn't long after that I ordered my first Nelsoonwood hook.

Nelsonwood

Bryan Tyler Nelson is the Texas wood artist of Nelsonwood. He handcrafts beautiful wooden items with a focus on bowls and crochet hooks. And the selection of woods and base/body parts seems endless.

You choose the components to each hook you order at Nelsonwood.

Hook.  Most importantly to me, you are able to choose a wooden hook or a metal hook. My favorite hook over the years has been the Boye brand. So I select that option and the size hook.

Base (body). This is the largest part of the hook. Where you hand holds onto. You can choose one of the many woods listed (with a vast variety of colors and grains) or you can choose one of the AlumiLite designs. AlumiLite is a "Proprietary Casting Urethane". It is very strong, stronger than Acrylic and will not break or chip.

Exotic Wood Ends. Whether you choose a wooden or AlumiLite base, you will then choose an exatic wood for the ends (for example, the far end of the hook and the piece between the base and the metal crochet hook on my custom Nelsonwood hook.)

My next order will be a hook with the AlumiLite base. There are so many options.  There are some styles that have feathers or dried flowers inside. With the clear AlumiLite, it looks like they are floating.

All handcrafted items, that aren't created first then are "ready to ship" take slightly longer to receive after ordering. The site states that it typically takes between 4-5 weeks for the hook to be created and shipped. That is reasonable for a custom, handmade item. I feel that mine arrived in the 3 to 4 week time frame. (Frankly, I only usually check my post office box weekly. And my Nelsonwood hooks arrived a week sooner than I had anticipated).

Nelsonwood orders can be made on Nelsonwood.net

Nelsonwood can also be found on Facebook and Instagram

Personal Thoughts

As I can begin to see retirement age approaching, my hands seem to be retiring before the rest of me. I find myself wondering if days filled with working with my hands/fingers will be a realistic goal. This is the primary reason I hurried to order this ergonomic hook option.  I also would like to be able to surround myself with a few nice, possibly heirloom, items here and there.

I did find the ordering page a bit confusing. Part of that was 1) I rarely read directions and just try to race through and 2) there are so many options that I had a very hard time making decisions. The good news is that Bryan has included a step-by-step "how to order" page that was extremely helpful (once I chose to look at directions!)

These hooks are pricey. I am not at all saying they are over-priced. Like all handmade items and works of art, the price is higher than mass-produced items. In fact, for what they are, the Nelsonwood custom crochet hooks are very reasonably priced. A younger me would not have been able to pay this price. Fortunately, the older me is able to splurge on some gifts to me. And, is it really a splurge if the ergonomic shape will help me continue crochet well into my retirement?

I tend to use only a range of 4 hook sizes; F, G, H, and I. So I have plans to buy Nelsonwood hooks in those four sizes. And the next will be one of those gorgeous AlumiLite bases. Probably one with the combination of flowers and fathers.

Personal Thoughts About Stereotypes

I'm rattling on about being an older woman and am looking forward to crocheting during my retirement. That is me personally. In no way do I want to continue the myth that crochet is a hobby that is only for old ladies.

There are many males (adult and younger) who are passionate about crochet and who are extremely talented. I am so very thankful for these folks who are sharing their passion and talent on social media.

I have worked with at-risk and special needs children for decades. I often offer crochet as a way for these children to have a hobby, develop skills (physical and emotional), have an outlet for their amazing creativity and so on. Unfortunately, over the decades, most males and many young female children were hesitant to try; citing "that's for old women".

I am thrilled that so many people, of such a wide range of age, gender, race, and culture are sharing their crochet passion with others. And am especially thrilled that males are showing their talent on social media.

Thank you for that.

How to Soften Dry, Callused, Cracked Heels the Easy Way

As we age, we're more prone to developing dry, cracked heels that can be painful as well as unsightly. There are many contributing factors, some within our control and others not. However, if you suffer from cracked heels, you know they can be challenging to treat effectively.

I've tried many different treatments for this annoying condition. In today's review, I recommend some simple tips that have helped me the most. Here's to healing our dry, cracked heels!

How to Heal & Soften Dry, Callused, Cracked Heels

Background photo by engin akyurt on Unsplash

What Causes Cracked Heels?

The helpful WebMD article "What to Know About Cracked Heels" explains that cracked heels can develop "When the skin around your heels becomes dry and thick...Extra pressure on the fat pad of your heels can cause dry, thick skin to form cracks, or heel fissures."

According to the article, contributing factors may include:

  • Wearing sandals, clogs, or other open-heeled footwear
  • Taking hot baths or hot showers
  • Using soaps with harsh ingredients
  • Standing for long stretches of time
  • Cold, dry weather
  • Medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, athlete's foot, heel spurs, Sjögren's syndrome, or juvenile plantar dermatosis

How to Treat and Repair Dry, Callused, Cracked Heels at Home

After consulting multiple reliable sources, here are the at-home foot care steps I have followed to heal my dry, cracked heels successfully. I repeat these steps periodically, as needed, to prevent and heal my heel cracks.

The best time to do these steps is just before bed to allow the healing foot cream or ointment to soak into the skin and do its work while you're sleeping.

Caveat: The WebMD article explains that "Occasionally, severely cracked heels can get infected and lead to a skin infection called cellulitis" and advises talking to your doctor "if your heels are severely cracked or don’t improve after you’ve treated them for a week."

Step 1: Use a diamond foot rasp to remove the top layer of thick calluses.

If your calluses aren't too thick and your heel cracks aren't deep, you can use a pumice stone after soaking your feet in warm, soapy water (see step 2). However, if your heels are extremely dry and have thick calluses, use either a Diamancel Diamond Foot Buffer #11 Medium Rasp or, for even thicker calluses, a Diamancel Diamond Foot Buffer #22 Coarse Rasp followed by the #11 Medium Rasp.

These files are an investment, but they will last for many years and can be easily washed in hot, soapy water and then dried and disinfected with isopropyl alcohol after each use.

Note: I have tried but do not recommend the "cheese grater" style metal foot file. It removes a lot of skin quickly and has sharp "teeth" that make it easy to accidentally remove too much callus and possibly cut into your skin, which could lead to infection. This type of foot file also leaves the surface very rough and requires a lot of effort to smooth with a pumice stone or fine diamond foot buffer.

Step 2: Soak your feet in warm, soapy water for 20 minutes.

Use gentle soap and warm, not hot water, in a tub or, if you prefer, a dedicated foot bath. Consider the affordable HoMedics Bubble Mate Foot Spa, a splash-proof, heated foot bath with water jets and raised massage nodes to pamper your tired feet. This is on my holiday wish list and would make a great gift, especially as part of a spa gift basket!

(My mom had a heated foot bath many years ago that she used to bring with her to the nail salon when she got a pedicure since she was extremely conscious about good hygiene at the salon. She also loved using it at home to soothe her aching feet after a long day.)

After soaking your feet for 20 minutes, use a pumice stone to smooth away any calluses or, if you used a diamond foot rasp in step 1, to smooth any roughness left by the rasp(a).

Step 3: Towel-dry your feet well.

Use a clean, absorbent towel to dry your feet very thoroughly, especially in between your toes to help prevent athlete's foot.

Step 4: Apply a healing ointment or moisturizing cream.

I have tried numerous foot creams to heal dry, cracked heels. Based on my experience, if you have very dry, callused heels with fairly deep cracks, I highly recommend starting with the Kerasal Nighttime Intensive Foot Repair, Skin Healing Ointment for Cracked Heels and Dry Feet. I discovered this fantastic ointment thanks to the recommendation of a well-known and highly respected board-certified dermatologist on social media. I'm very grateful to her for introducing me to this miracle cracked heels treatment!

It contains 5% salicylic acid, 10% urea and soft white petrolatum to exfoliate, soften, and moisturize hard, dry, cracked, and callused heels, and is approved by the American Podiatric Medical Association. It comes in a small tube, but a little goes a long way.

Another good option is Ebanel Urea Cream 40% plus Salicylic Acid 2%. It has a consistency that one Amazon reviewer likened to Elmer's glue, which helps it adhere to the skin while it does its work. It may not be the most cosmetically elegant formulation, but it's extremely effective!

Once your feet are in better shape and your cracks have healed, you can switch to something less heavy-duty and more economical for daily or nightly maintenance. Good choices include Dr. Scholl's Dry, Cracked Foot Repair Ultra Hydrating Foot Cream, Miracle of Aloe Miracle Foot Repair Cream for Dry, Cracked Feet & Heels, or Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula with Vitamin E Foot Magic Moisturizing Foot Cream. All of these are available on Amazon, and most can be found at a well-stocked drugstore.

Whichever cream or ointment you use, make sure to massage it in very well before putting on your heel socks or sleep socks.

Step 5: Put on heel socks or thin, breathable bed socks and wear them overnight.

I prefer wearing thin cotton or bamboo socks to bed if I'm applying my foot cream or ointment to the balls of my feet as well as my heels. Bamboo or cotton bed socks allow the skin to "breathe," and thin socks are less absorbent so your foot cream or ointment stays on the skin of your heels vs. on your socks.

My favorite socks for this purpose (and also my favorite summer or warm weather socks) are the SERISIMPLE Women's Bamboo Ankle Socks. They come in a pack of five pairs for less than $17 (at the time of this post's publication), so $3.40 a pair, and they are excellent quality! They are thin, soft, and lightweight and slip on easily over foot cream or ointment. They also come in a very large selection of pretty pastel, mid-tone, and dark color assortments.

But if my feet are in really rough shape and I'm applying the ointment just to my cracked heels, I'll put on toeless, silicone-lined heel socks before going to bed.

For the latter, I really like the ZenToes Moisturizing Fuzzy Sleep Socks. The outer shell is a soft, fleece material, while the heel is lined with a silicone gel infused with jojoba seed oil, olive oil, and vitamin E to add an extra layer of softening and moisturizing ingredients where they are needed most.

The silicone gel creates a warm, hydrating environment that helps your foot cream or ointment penetrate while you sleep. These open-toed sleep socks are also washable and reusable, and one size fits most. Even after the infused oils are used up, they still work perfectly with your preferred foot cream.

I also love that these are made by a small, woman-owned business based in Wisconsin. Although the socks are not manufactured in the USA, the company prides itself on doing three product quality checks before they are shipped out to customers: before they leave the factory, when they are received at the USA warehouse, and when they are packaged in that USA warehouse.

In addition, ZenToes uses individuals with diverse abilities who work for Opportunities, Inc. in Wisconsin, a Community Rehabilitation Program, to package their products "with dignity and purpose."

For a short-term quick fix, replace steps 4 and 5 with an intensive repair foot mask.

There are Kerasal Nighttime Intensive Repair Foot Masks that can be used instead of steps 4 and 5, although as single-use products they are less economical (and less environmentally responsible). But they're great if you want to try out the Kerasal Nighttime Intensive Foot Repair ointment to see how you like it before investing in heel socks or thin cotton bed socks.

Also, if you want to wear sandals, go to the beach, etc., and notice at the last minute that your heels are cracked, you can use the Kerasal Daytime Intensive Repair Foot Mask (pack of 2 pairs). These won't deliver the same results as steps 1–5, but they can definitely improve the way your feet and heels look and feel in less than half an hour.

To use them, start by washing and drying your feet thoroughly. Then, remove one pair of the foot masks and put them on. Put your feet up and relax (they're too slippery to walk around in) for 20 minutes, then remove the covers and massage any residue of the healing cream into your feet.

Helpful Tips to Prevent Heel Cracks

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. To keep your feet and heels soft, smooth and healthy, here are some habits to adopt that can help prevent or reduce calluses and heel cracks:

  • Avoid walking barefoot on hard surfaces
  • Wear closed-heel footwear
  • Take warm, not hot, baths or showers
  • Use mild soaps
  • Dry your feet and in between your toes thoroughly to avoid athlete's foot
  • Keep your skin at a comfortable temperature and moisturize your feet daily and/or nightly with a foot cream after showering or bathing and drying the skin well

Your Back Will Love This Practical Laundry Bag Backpack

Carrying laundry to and from the basement laundry room in our old house has always been a bit nerve-wracking, thanks to the narrow, steep basement steps that wouldn’t meet today’s building codes. I can’t navigate them safely without holding onto the handrail (which is only on one side). So, when I was perusing Amazon and accidentally happened upon a laundry bag backpack, I got quite excited.

Today, I’m sharing my review of this spacious, practical laundry bag backpack that turned out to be the perfect solution to my clothes-toting challenge.

Lightweight, comfortable laundry bag backpack great for college students!

Whether you have a large family, hate doing laundry or know a busy college student who makes trips to the washer and dryer only when they're running out of clean clothes, toting around large loads of laundry can be a real pain in the back, especially for those of us who already suffer from back pain. Fortunately, the smart folks at Ãƒzhido have made toting multiple loads' worth of dirty or clean clothes back and forth to the laundry room or laundromat a lot easier on the back with their extra-large laundry bag backpack.

Here's what I love about it.

Hands-Free, Comfortable, Back-Sparing Design

Because it's a backpack, my hands are free to hold onto the banister as I lug my tops, pants, underwear, socks, etc. up and down the stairs to the washer and dryer. There is also much less strain on my back, thanks to the lightweight fabric and the weight load of the contents being balanced behind me and distributed evenly between the comfortable, thick, foam padded straps.

As a result, I can easily carry multiple loads' worth of apparel to and from the laundry room in one trip, something I could never manage with a conventional laundry bag or basket.

Extra-Large Capacity

Excluding the gray, drawstring-top extension gusset (which folds down into the bag when not needed those dimensions increase to 39.4"L x 15.1"W x 15.1"H with a 115-liter (4.06-cubic foot) capacity, easily enough space to accommodate three to four loads' worth of clothing.

There is also a 15” x 11.2” outer pocket to hold laundry detergent and other items, which is especially useful if you are going to and from a laundromat. I have also used it to keep delicate, hand-washable items separate.

Even filled with two loads' worth of clothing, the bag is just half full.

Perfect for Bedding and Oversized Items

Because of its generous capacity, this laundry bag backpack can be used to carry large quilts and comforters, king-size bedding, pillows, down coats and others large, bulky items that can be unwieldy.

Adjustable Size

Just as the extension gusset at the top accommodates extra-large loads, the webbing strap can be folded over the top and securely latched to make the bag more compact when carrying smaller loads. The length of the shoulder straps can also be adjusted to fit the wearer and balance the weight optimally.

You can gauge the size of this extra-large laundry bag backpack on my 6' tall husband. The gray webbing strap can be folded over the top and securely latched on the other side to make the bag more compact for smaller loads. You can also see the large outer pocket for detergent, delicates, etc.

Sturdy Fabric and Durable Construction

The main body and padded straps of this laundry backpack are made of sturdy, rip-resistant 600-denier oxford cloth fabric. All points of wear have reinforced stitching, and the durable webbing straps and secure locking catches are also made for heavy-duty wear and tear over the years.

You can see the reinforced stitching and sturdy webbing on all the straps as well as the loop for hanging on a hook or doorknob or to carry the bag by hand for smaller loads.

Convenient Carry Handle / Hanging Loop

The sturdy loop made of heavy-duty webbing can be used to hang this laundry hamper backpack from a doorknob or hook or even carry it if your load is light.

Wide Opening

The wide opening at the top makes both filling and unloading this laundry bag extremely easy.

You can see how easy it is to fill and unload the bag, thanks to the wide top opening (the gray extension gusset is opened up here to accommodate up to 3–4 loads).

Compact Folded Size

When not in use, this laundry bag backpack folds down to a very compact size for storage.

Wide Choice of Colors

At the time of this review's publication, this laundry bag backpack comes in a choice of 13 colors: Teal (the one I chose), Army Green, Black, Dark Blue, Light Blue, Khaki (a pale tan, like chinos), Light Purple (a plum color), Orange, Pink, Purple (a grape color), Red (a deep crimson), Yellow and Charcoal Grey. The wide selection of colors is especially nice if you plan to give these as gifts.

Very Affordable

At the time of this review's publication, the price of this extra-large, heavy-duty laundry bag backpack on Amazon is on sale for less than $22 ($20.49 TO $21.49, depending on the color), regularly $22.99-$26.59, making it an affordable and effective solution to a frustrating problem.

Makes a Great, Practical Gift

The manufacturer emphasizes the usefulness of this product for college students, and I agree that these would make wonderful graduation gifts for high school seniors or anytime gifts for college students.

I also think they would be terrific gifts for anyone who uses a laundromat, has their laundry room on a different floor from the bedrooms or just does a lot of large loads on a regular basis.
