March 31st is National Crayon Day – a day to celebrate the creation of crayons and the joy of coloring.
Children love to color and a box of crayons and a coloring book will give them hours of fun. Today, even adults enjoy this childhood activity; albeit with intricate designs created just for them as an artistic challenge of expression.
The Origin of Crayons

Crayons date back to the 17th century, although those were not made of wax and were not as durable as today's wax crayons. Colored wax crayons for children were invented by Binney & Smith in 1903. They are a company which produces paint, pigments and slate pencils for schools. They also produce a dustless chalk, originally invented at the request of teachers. The wax and chalk-based crayons are also popular with artists.

The first box of Crayola crayons was sold as an eight-pack with colors; black, brown, blue, red, violet, orange, yellow, and green. We still have this first box of colorful creations today with the same original colors, just with a more modernized look. Boxes of crayons come in many sizes from 8-count to 120. There are also various varieties of crayons, including washable and erasable.
Check out Crayola.com for the names of all 120 colors available today.

You know that one of my favorite things to do is buy my grandchildren new crayons! You can never have enough of them. Just seeing their eyes light up when they open that box and the smell brings back so many good memories for me and will make memories for them too! I hope there is never a day when crayons are no longer available, because it really is a pleasure for all ages! Thanks for including my review as well!
ReplyDeleteI have bought more boxes of crayons over the years than I can count. First for my children and now for my grandchildren. Always a fun activity.
DeleteI have fond memories of back to school shopping days with my children and buying a new, fresh box of crayons each year. They had crayons at home too, of course, but there was just something special about buying a new, unused box of crayons. I definitely associate the smell of crayons to school halls too. I guess that is because student artwork was often displayed on the walls of the halls. Crayons tend to make everyone a bit of an artist, especially when coupled with a coloring book.
ReplyDeleteA new box of crayons is always a treat, Mouse. Nice sharp points and bright colors.
DeleteI fondly remember my excitement as a child when I got a new box of Crayola crayons! I’m glad this simple pleasure has stood the test of time and continues to delight children (and adults). I have always thought the best toys are ones that encourage us to use our imaginations and explore and express our creativity, and crayons top the list!
ReplyDeleteI agree, Margaret. Imagination and creativity go hand-in-hand.
DeleteYou know, I've been wanting to sit down and color these days (honestly) - Your article about national crayon day reminded me that I was going to do it the other night, and didn't! I love to color, it's so destressing.
ReplyDeleteIt is nice that there are 'adult' coloring books now, Barbara, as coloring is really a relaxing activity.
