The Story of Walt Disney World Book Review

The Story of Walt Disney World: A book review of the 1971 souvenir book, which features pictures, information and illustrations of the park when it first opened.

Walt Disney World enthusiasts are always wanting to learn more about one of the world's most famous destinations.  This book, The Story of Walt Disney World, is a big square paperback book with 50 pages of information, lots of photographs and even a few colorful illustrations from the park. The first page has the date of October 25, 1971. I believe it was probably released as a souvenir to celebrate the opening of the theme park, which occurred on October 1, 1971.

The first page includes a dedication taken from the plaque in Town Square on Main Street at Walt Disney World by Roy Disney O. Disney that reads, "Walt Disney World is a tribute to the philosophy and life of Walter Elias Disney...and to the talents, the dedication and the loyalty of the entire Disney organization that made Walt Disney's dream come true. May Walt Disney World bring Joy and Inspiration and New Knowledge to all who come to this happy place...a Magic Kingdom where the young at heart of all ages can laugh and play and learn together."  If you have experienced the park, you know that Disney delivered on those promises. Millions and millions of people have visited, enjoyed and created many fond memories of time spent at the park.

This vintage book offers a look at what the park offered and looked like when it first opened and even includes a map from the year 1971. A lot has changed since then!

The Story of Walt Disney World would make a wonderful gift idea for those who have fond memories of visiting the park in the past or for those who are interested in the history of the park. You will find The Story of Walt Disney World on eBay by clicking right here.

  1. Walt Disney World is definitely a magical place. This would be a really special book to own as a memory of a trip there. My family went there back in the 1980s, having visited Disneyland in California in the 1970s. I know - dating myself here - LOL. And my son had a co-worker who loves WDW SO much that when she retired she moved to Orlando, bought a season pass to Walt Disney World and visits the magic kingdom on the average of 2X a week. She's looking forward to hopefully getting a tour guide job there. :)

  2. Walt Disney World is certainly a magical place. I went the first time when my daughter was about 3 so the park would have only been 3 years old at that time. We went again about 8 years later and then about 10 years ago we went with two of our granddaughters. I love seeing it through the eyes of our kids and grandkids.

  3. Disney World offers a fabulous family vacation! We went twice when our children were little and they loved it. I remember vividly the Tower of Terror (yes, I was the one terrorized)and Alien Encounter (or something like that) where it felt like something slithered across my ankles. Still gives me chills remembering it. Of course, I loved Cinderella's castle and the tea cup ride. Recounting it now makes me wonder which of us enjoyed it the most! It really is where the young at heart of all ages can laugh and play and learn together! My family certainly did! I have often said I would like to go back now, all as adults, to see the shows and experience it again. No doubt, this is a great book and one that would transport many of us back to our childhood.

    1. You made me smile, Mouse! I have not been back to WDW since they build the Tower of Terror so I have that to look forward to one day!?! I'd love to go at Halloween though I expect that is a very busy season at the park.

  4. This is a destination that should be on everyone's list of places to see and do before you die! We had the good fortune to take our children to this "magical place" and made many lasting memories! The history of the place must be really interesting for those who were there at the start of the Magic!

  5. Walt Disney was a fascinating man, and the Magic Kingdom he created is a living testament to what we can achieve by “dreaming big” and then making a bone-deep commitment to realizing that dream. This sounds like a wonderful book!
