How to Lose Weight While Playing Video Games on the Kindle Fire

Video Game AppsI have been shocked by how much weight I have lost while playing video games when exercising.  Previously, I found exercising to be boring and I simply couldn't force myself to stick with it.  That was before I discovered video games on my Kindle Fire!

How It All Began for Me ........

Several years ago, one of our fellow contributors, Susan Deppner, helped me select a new Kindle Fire.  Susan had lots of experience with the various electronic readers and I trusted her to know exactly what I needed.

I loved my Kindle Paperwhite, but I wanted a Kindle with color pictures for cookbooks and children's books.  We all know images are the first impression of either of those kinds of books and are often the determining factor in which ones we purchase.  After all, I'm not likely to even try a recipe without seeing a photo that looks delicious.

I remember laughing when Susan said a Kindle Fire with 32 GB would be more than enough, unless I played a lot of video games.  I laughed because, at the time, I didn't play video games.  The only video games I had ever encountered required a specific console & controllers connected to the television.

Fast forward 4 years and you will find me playing video games on my Kindle Fire every day.

How Video Games Helped Me Lose Weight

Video Game Apps on Kindle Fire
It has been said many times that video game players pack on the pounds while playing video games.  That is simply not true for me!  I play my video games on my Kindle Fire while I exercise.

I've never liked exercising.  Frankly, in the past, I considered it boring and most often a waste of time since I couldn't force myself to stick with something so mind-numbing.  When my daughter shared how someone she knew had lost a lot of weight on an exercise bike, I thought that very impressive, but lamented that I could not exercise an hour per day.

Time and experience has proven me wrong on that opinion too.

Fast forward 32 weeks and I am happy to say that I have worked up to exercising an hour per day, 5 days a week, on my recumbent exercise bike.  I don't find that exercise boring because I play my video games while pedaling.  I have lost 30 lbs. in 32 weeks without giving up my favorite food!

Favorite Video Games I Play on My Kindle Fire

My first encounter with a video game on my Kindle Fire, was a hidden object game.  I quickly advanced to Candy Crush.  From there, I discovered lots of games I love to play!  Perhaps an hour a day is not enough.

These are some of my favorite free game apps that I have downloaded to my Kindle Fire.  If you are already an experienced gamer, I recommend starting at the bottom of the list to discover new games you might enjoy.

Simply talking to my husband or son, you would find out quickly that everyone has a different taste or preference in game choice.  That is totally okay!  There is something for everyone in the Amazon Game Apps that can be downloaded to the Kindle Fire.

For me, I have always chosen the free game apps.  They all have options to purchase specialty items, tokens, gems or whatever the game requires to continue playing or advance faster.  That is not necessary.  Most of the time, I simply switch to a different game and play until my "lives" are restored on my current favored game.

  1. First, let me congratulate you on your weight loss. Impressive and well done, especially finding a fun - non-boring - way to stick to your exercise routine. Playing video games on your Kindle sounds like the perfect way to get the benefits of exercise while enjoying a fun activity. I had just decided last night that I was going to start my own program to rid myself of some (admittedly, many) extra pounds which snuck on when I wasn't looking --- LOL.

    1. Thank you Elf! I, too, had those pounds sneak onto my body when I wasn't looking. I am glad to be rid of them now. I enjoy my food too much to give up potatoes and pasta, but I have had fun playing video games 5 days a week. Now I understand how video games can be so addictive. For me, they have clearly been an excellent diversion this year.

  2. That is an impressive weight loss achievement. That you accomplished it while having fun is even better yet. I might have to set my bike up on the indoor exercise stand and give this a try. Thanks for sharing a proven strategy for making exercise a winning habit. Way to go!

    1. Thank you! It really has been fun. There are days now when I look forward to finishing my work so I can exercise, which really is hard to believe. I have no doubt you would find using your bike for exercise during the winter months would be easy & pleasurable, Diana. I have noted that it has also strengthened my legs too. As physically active as you, I doubt you need the strengthening, but you may well find a benefit in maintaining your strength over the winter. If you do bring your bike indoors, let me know if you find it as much fun as I do.

    1. Awesome Mary Beth! To be completely honest, I have been very surprised by the weight loss results. A pound a week sounds slow, which was fine for me, but after 32 weeks, it has made a significant difference. I don't expect that to continue at a pound a week obviously, but I do think it is reasonable to believe I will start building strength and endurance at this point.

  4. I think you have hit one the "secret" to exercising. Mind numbing is what everyone says about it, but if you can make it fun while you mind is not otherwise occupied, then you have a winning solution. So glad that you are able to do both and have great results too. I know for myself, swimming is mind numbing too, so I use that time to pray while I do my strokes. It's a win-win situation and our bodies and minds are the better for it all.

    1. Swimming is an excellent exercise! I might even prefer it to the exercise bike if I had a pool and could swim year-round. I took normal exercise from activity for granted when I was younger. I am now at an age where I needed to find a real exercise routine. I've been pleased, and surprised, with the results.

  5. Oh my goodness - losing 30 pounds down in 32 weeks is a fabulous accomplishment! And achieving it by playing fun video games while exercising on your recumbent bike is fantastic. I so admire your commitment to exercise daily, and to find a way to make it fun and something to look forward to, rather than to dread. You probably won't be surprised to hear that I recently took advantage of this year's Amazon Prime Day deals to upgrade my old Kindle Paperwhite to a Kindle Fire, for the same reasons as you. (Who wants to look at an appetizing recipe photo in black and white, lol?) I've been playing the free version of Bejeweled every day on my iPhone for as long as I can remember, and it has been a godsend to help me pass the time and stay calm while sitting in doctors' waiting rooms or while on long public transportation commutes to and from those appointments. Unfortunately, Bejeweled (or Bejeweled Blitz, or its many other variations) doesn't seem to be for the Kindle Fire, so I will definitely check out some of the other games you recommended. Congratulations on your impressive weight loss, kudos on your ingenuity and commitment in achieving it, and thanks for the inspiration and recommendations!

    1. Thank you Margaret! I needed an exercise routine. I used to be a lot more physically active when my children were younger and depending on me. Over the last few years, I have slowly gotten out of shape. I really needed to built back my strength and lose the unwanted pounds. I know you have experienced how that feels. I have certainly been impressed and inspired by your weight lose story and determination too. btw, I remember Bejeweled now that you mention it. It is a fun game and a nice way to pass the time. I love the idea of having with you when you have having to sit in waiting rooms.

  6. Cynthia, that's a great way to lose weight. Lovely to read Susan's name as well. She's missed. I've actually never thought about playing video games on my exercise bike...hmmmm. I can see how that can get addictive too and how time would fly by. While I still can, I bike ride outside and pray while I ride; I call it my prayer bike rides - I cover body and spirit in one shot lol. For winter I have an indoor bike and I'll have to consider your idea - I've actually written riddles for my books on my stationary bike too. And last but not least, WOW!! congratulations on your weight loss! Fantastic achievement - you're burning all your calories. Way to go!

    1. I know what you mean about seeing Susan's name. She was such a good friend and a very wise counsel. I miss her and think of her nearly every time I pick up my Kindle Fire.

Using you bicycling time to pray is a much better use of time than my video games. Staying in touch with our Creator is actually more important than anything. As for burning my calories, you are exactly right. That is precisely what I am doing to lose weight and reclaim some of my lost physical strength.
