Pulse by Felix Francis - A Book Review

A horseracing mystery by the son of the well-known English author, Dick Francis

Image of a heartbeat

Felix Francis brings us another novel in the group of horseracing mysteries begun by Dick Francis and now continued by his son, Felix.

Synopsis

A well-dressed man is found unconscious at a local racecourse and is rushed to the hospital. He subsequently dies and his identity is unknown. No identification is found on him and no one appears to be looking for him or reporting him missing.

The ER Doctor who treated the deceased is Dr. Chris Reynolds. She is at first intrigued by this nameless man, and then is all but obsessed with discovering who he is. She begins asking questions and discovers this to be a problem. Someone doesn’t want the questions asked or answered and will go to any lengths to prevent it.

At the same time, Chris is suffering from mental health issues and severe anorexia. Her husband and 14-year-old twin boys are worried about her. Even her job is in jeopardy if she cannot get her medical issues resolved.

While on medical leave, Dr. Chris continues to try and discover who the dead man is. When someone attempts to murder her, no one will believe someone tried to kill her. Chris is left with no option but to discover who the dead man was and why he died,  before the same thing happens to her.

Summary

Another mystery set in the world of horseracing where the subject of race fixing becomes a factor in the plot of the story. Pulse, by Felix Francis, is part of a collection of novels continuing the racing thriller tradition begun by his father, famous English fiction writer, Dick Francis.

Easy Apple Cake Recipe

apple cake recipe
When we received a bushel of Honeycrisp apples for Christmas, I immediately thought of the apple cake recipe that my mother-in-law gave me many years ago.

I've often made this cake during the holidays because we have so many out of town guests. Our family members come in from all across the United States, which means they hail from different time zones. Therefore, we have early risers who quietly start their mornings so others who are still sleeping can rest uninterrupted.

With the various sleep habits, we are not going to find a great time to have breakfast together. The apple cake is perfect for me to make in advance and have available for whatever time of the day our guests need breakfast.

This apple cake is similar to a pineapple upside down cake.  The fruit goes on the bottom of the prepared pan which means it is on the top of the cake when it is turned out of the pan.

The cake does not need to be refrigerated, which is another plus for making this delicious cake and leaving it out for breakfast, or throughout the day as a snack.

Apple Cake Recipe

To begin, set out the butter to soften.  Also, wash, core and thinly slice apples.  Each apple will be cut into sixteenths.

Ingredients

  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 cups sugar
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • ½ cup softened butter
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 cups flour (I use 2-1/4 cups Swans Down cake flour)
  • 2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 cup walnut pieces (if desired)
  • 4-6 large Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples, cored and sliced

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F
  2. Generously butter a 9 x 13 x 2 inch baking dish
  3. Combine all of the dry ingredients and set aside  (cake flour, baking soda, ground cinnamon)
  4. In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs with an electric mixer until frothy. Gradually add the sugar, oil and butter (a little of each at a time). Beat until sugar has dissolved.
  5. Stir in the vanilla (with the mixer on low speed is fine)
  6. Add dry ingredients mixture to the egg mixture along with the walnuts (with the mixer on low speed is fine)
  7. Spread the apples over the bottom of the prepared baking pan and drizzle with a few pinches of sugar
  8. Pour the batter over them, smoothing to cover all the apples

Bake for 1 hour

Set aside to cool to room temperature. Turn upside down on serving plate. I use my cutting board as the serving tray for this cake. Not only is it the right size, but a knife will not harm it.

AI and Photography

Photo of author with hobbies
AI generated image from original photograph

AI has come a long way since I last wrote a review on it two years ago.  You now hear a lot of negatives (mainly when people try to pass an AI feature off as their own) but I believe there are many useful purposes for AI in photography and editing.  I also believe it is important when a creation has added AI features that you represent it as such.

In the image above I started with a photograph of myself, as you see in the center of the collage.  I then went into ChatGPT and asked it to create a collage with my favorite pastimes: photography, Bible class, Book club, photographing lighthouses, and bird watching.

Caricatures using ChatGPT

Another fun thing to do in ChatGPT is to make caricatures.  These are very easy to make and ChatGPT allows you to make up to 4 images a day for free.  If you want to do more in a day then you would need to upgrade to their paid version.  I have made several of these caricatures and always enjoy the outcomes.  Here are the steps I take to make the images.
  • Enter ChatGPT in your browser.
  • Sign in to ChatGPT
  • On the left side of the screen you will see images as a choice-hit that
  • Now a box will come up asking you to describe image here
  • This is where you list your activities that you would like to show in your caricature.
  • Now to the left of the box you will see a plus sign and this is where you add your photograph
  • When all is added you just click on the button to start and it will create your image.  This will take a few minutes.
Below you see a caricature I made of my dog Dixie.  I put her activites as running in park and chasing squirrels.

For my brothers-in-law birthday, I wanted to create a special card so I put a photo I had of him on ChatGPT and listed his favorite pastimes: the theatre, chess, visiting Branson MO and cigars.  I asked for a caricature and here is the resulting image which I then put on the front of his birthday card.

 Generative Fill in Photoshop

Another great way to use AI is a fun feature in Photoshop called "Generative Fill".  In this feature you use a photograph that you had taken and add something to it.  You can do this by circling the area where you want to add something and then selecting generative fill in the Edit drop down menu.  You will have a box pop up where you can describe what you want to add.  Here is an example.
This is a photo I created an image for a challenge group I am in called" Monthly Artistic Playtime". They provided the hearts and lettering, and we were challenged to create an image using that.  I added a photo I had taken of the Northern Lights for the background and then with generative fill I added the two Cardinal lovebirds.

Creating Images in Meta AI

In this one I had a photo that I took of my backyard when it was snowing, and I wanted to use it for Christmas.  I used Meta AI to add the wreath with the red bow, the twinkling lights and the greeting.  Meta AI is found on Facebook and is very easy to use.  You can find it on your home Facebook page in the lefthand column

2023 Review on AI and Photography

In 2023 I first wrote a review on fun ways to use AI and creativity with photographs. AI has come a long way in the past two years, but I thought you might like to see what I wrote two years ago.  Here is a link to that review.

The First Gentleman Book Review

The First Gentleman, a thriller by former President Bill Clinton and the master of thrillers, James Patterson.

The First Gentleman is Clinton, and Patterson's third collaboration with the first two being The President Is Missing and The President's Daughter. The books are not a series, so it doesn't matter what order you read them in.

The First Gentleman Book Review

The First Gentleman: Plot

President Madeline Wright is in the middle of a reelection campaign and preparing a plan to save the US economy. But that is not her biggest problem; it's her husband, Cole Wright.

Cole is a former NFL star who played for the New England Patriots and is now the first gentleman. Cole is being charged with a 17 year old murder of a cheerleader, turning his world upsidedown.

Two investigative reporters, Garret Wilson and Brea Cooke, set out to write a book and uncover the truth about this cold case. Is Cole Wright guilty of murder? You will have to read this book to find out.

The story alternates between personal moments and political drama. You will be drawn into a web of secrets, investigations, and power struggles that feel real. Patterson keeps the chapters short and suspenseful, making this hard to put down. I do have the other two books and can't wait to read them.

A Review of Making Hot Cocoa from Scratch

hot cocoa recipe
hot cocoa recipe

Few things are as good on a cold winter's day, than a big mug of hot cocoa.  The smell alone is enough to take me back to my childhood and the cocoa my Mom use to make.  Drinking it at the kitchen table, looking out the window at a glittering snow covered landscape.  It was magical.

Mom never used hot chocolate mix, she made it from scratch, by the cup. In each mug, she would put powdered milk, cocoa and of sugar. Then she would boil water on the stove and pour one cup each in our mugs with the homemade mix.  Then all you had to do was stir.  Delicious!

The recipe is simple and easy to make....

  • 1/2 cup powdered milk
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup boiling water

Making your own hot cocoa from scratch is so much better than buying mixes.  Store bought mixes have all kinds of preservatives and additives that you really don't need to put in your body.  Making your own cocoa lets you control what you put in your body.  Another great thing is that you can adjust it to the flavor you like.  More or less sugar, more or less cocoa, however you prefer it.

If you want to be adventurous, you can flavor your hot chocolate.  Just add the following to the original recipe.  Remember, one addition per cup.

Cinnamon hot chocolate - add 1/8 teaspoon of cinnamon

Peppermint hot chocolate - add 1/8 teaspoon of peppermint extract and 1/8 teaspoon vanilla

Coffee flavored hot chocolate - add 1 or 2 teaspoons of black coffee, to taste.

Orange hot chocolate - Replace half the water with orange juice and add a pinch of cinnamon

Three Adult Beverage Hot Chocolate Recipes

1.  add 1 ounce of warm Kahlua

2.  1/4 ounce Peppermint Schnapps and 1/2 ounce chocolate liqueur

3.  1/4 tsp. cinnamon, pinch of ground cloves, 1/8 tsp. nutmeg, 1 and 1/2 ounces of spiced rum.

hot cocoa

I keep these ingredients in my cupboard all the time, that way I can have hot chocolate any time I want, or make it for guests.  Some times I also make it for a hostess gift, especially during the holidays.  Just bag the ingredients separately and put them in a decorative tin or box for perfect gift giving!

Amicool External DVD Drive Review

Do you still own a desktop or laptop with a Cd/DVD player ? When my last computer met its' fate the replacement laptop did not have a CD/DVD player. At the time I wasn't concerned as through the years had pivoted away for media and store all documents and photos in the cloud.

Photo of Amicool DVD Drive External

Until ... I decided to tackle the media from years ago. In all forms saved on Cd's, DVD's, USB thumb drives and on and on. The library actually offers a digitize service free of charge; however, the wait list was long. Instead an external DVD drive was purchased for under $25 and it works like a charm.

The Amicool had over 11,000 online reviews with average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. A great affordable alternative for laptops and desktops without an internal drive.

Features

Slim, light and unobtrusive the Amicool is features packed:

DVD Drive

USB 3.0 C CD Burner

Cd/DVD Optical Drive Rewrite

Backward compatible

Compatible Windows 7-11

MacBook Mac Linux OS Apple

Recommendation

I highly recommend and this drive delivers as promised!

My Children Save My Life Every Day - A Song Review

My Children Save My Life Every Day - A Song Review

My Children Save My Life — Every Single Day

All my life, I've said this sentence without thinking twice: my children save my life every day. It was never a slogan or something I tried to turn into meaning. It was simply the truth as it lived in me — steady, quiet, and constant. I realize that's a lot of pressure to put on our kids, but nevertheless, it's an honest feeling.

When I wrote the song My Children Save My Life, I realized I wasn't just writing about my children. I was writing to them. I was also finally giving words to something I later discovered so many parents, especially mothers, feel but rarely articulate.

Over time, I've seen versions of this same sentiment shared again and again on social media: my kids saved me, my children gave my life purpose, I wouldn't be here without them. Different words, same heartbeat.

That's when I knew this feeling deserved its own song.

As you read this article, you'll find some of the lyrics I wrote for this song filtered throughout.

Wanting to Hand Them an Easy World - Yah, I Know, It's Not Easy!

I want my children to have an easy life. Not a perfect one. Just an easier one.

When they were little, and even now, I want to hand them all the answers. I want to give them the map, the shortcuts, and the warnings written clearly so they can bypass that broken ground altogether.

I want to keep them close. I want to block the shadows. I want to win every battle for them so they can stay peaceful.

I know, logically, that children are supposed to struggle sometimes, that challenges shape them, that lessons learned firsthand matter more than anything I could explain.

But emotionally? Like many parents, I don't want my children to suffer. When they struggle, I don't watch from a distance (but sometimes I'm forced to), I dig deep alongside them.

Is that selfish? Maybe a little.

If their life is easy, mine feels easier too. But mostly it comes from love. From instinct. From that deep, almost unbearable desire to protect their spirit.

That's where the song begins — with that wanting. That hope that if I could just give them the book of life, filled with every secret to an easier road, they'd never have to stumble.

The truth is, that wouldn't work, because nine times out of ten, the likelihood they'd listen is slim to nil. But that's ok too, because it's evidence that, in the end, it's up to them.

Life, of course, doesn't follow the maps I draw.

Watching Them Become Who They Are

One of the hardest truths of parenting is realizing that no matter how much wisdom you carry, life still belongs to your children. They have to live it themselves. I've watched them stumble. I've watched them rise again. I've watched them make choices that require courage, quiet courage, the kind that doesn't announce itself.

There's a line in the song that holds a complicated truth for me: I'm grateful for their strength, yet at the very same time, I hope they never really need it

That's the paradox of being a parent. You want your children to be capable and resilient, but you don't want life to demand too much of them.

What humbles me most is realizing they don't need my book of life after all. They don't need every secret written down. They find paths I don't see. They bypassed broken ground, which I thought was unavoidable. And in doing so, they teach me something I'm still learning.

Choosing Faith Over Fear

Parenting is a constant balancing act between faith and fear. Fear wants control. Faith asks for trust. Trust is not passive — it's an active choice, one I have to make again and again. Letting go doesn't mean loving less. It means loving differently.

I'm still practicing. I'll never be a pro at letting them go. But even in silence, I feel their hearts. I send them peace. I remind myself that I'm not their answer — I'm the road that helps them through. I'm the doorway into living, not the path they have to choose.

My children don't just shape my life.
They save my life.
Every single day.

And that truth deserved its own song. It was my Valentine's Day gift to them this year.

National Toast Day Review

Toast Day is held each year on the 4th Thursday of February. It was begun in 2014 by The Tiptree World Bread Awards to celebrate toast and all the breads we make it with. (Tiptree is a brand of fruit preserves, conserves, and marmalade made in England by Wilkin & Sons Limited, so it makes sense they have an interest in toast.)

Image of toast slices popping up from a toaster

The organization is in the UK, but the popularity of this day has found a following in the United States.

The Shades of Toast

Some people like their toast barely toasted (my mother, for one. I used to tell her that her version of toast was more like ‘warm bread’, LOL).

Vintage toaster from the 1920s and 1930s
Others like their toast almost burnt, which is a way I learned to eat it as a small child from my great-grandmother, Banny. At the time, the only toaster she had was a non-popup toaster used in the 1920s to 1930s. You lowered each side, inserted the bread, closed the doors and ‘watched’ it closely. Only one side was toasted at a time. One had to lower the doors, and flip the bread to toast the other side. And, yes, I do remember that toaster - it looked like the one pictured here. Banny, my GG, would wait until the smoke was coming out of the toaster (burnt), then toast the other side. Then she would lightly scrape the burnt part off.

It may sound weird to you today, but as a tiny child who adored her ‘Banny’, I thought it was great, and I loved the burnt flavor. The rest of the way we ate that toast was dipped in coffee (Banny) and cocoa (me). To this day, cocoa and toast is a favorite of mine. Although, I no longer eat my toast burnt! Most people prefer their toast toasted somewhere in between barely and burnt.

Toast Toppings

Toast with jam

Now, the toppings for toast are endless, and depend on your preference. Butter is a standard topping, but favorites run anywhere from jam/jellies to peanut butter to avocados. Then there are standards like poached eggs on toast and toasted sandwiches.

Summary

So, if you like toast (and most of us do), mark the 4th Thursday of February on your calendar in order to celebrate this ‘toasty’ day!

Mischief and Manors Book Reviewed

mischief & manors book cover
I have recently started reading through the Change of Heart book series by Ashtyn Newbold and I have not been disappointed.

This entire series is a  very romantic, very entertaining series built around characters with charm and wit.

Book 1 of the series is Mischief and Manors.  The title describes well what a reader should expect.  The mischief element is introduced by the two young brothers in the story.  Manors is also clear in reference to the homes.  Changing the spelling to "manners" would also have been appropriate since having the proper manners in society definitely matters.

Romantics at heart always love books with gentlemen and heroes.  This series is based on women who need a real gentleman and hero in their lives.  All Regency Romance novels are written based on a time period in the past when woman have little or no control over their own lives.  Happiness and romance are secondary to financial security and marriage arrangements may not include the woman's personal considerations.

Synopsis of Mischief and Manors

Annette Downing and her two young brothers are orphans who were taken in my their uncle's widow when their parents died 5 years before the book's beginning.  Ruth Filbee is a cruel, selfish, and viscous woman who didn't want the children, but also didn't want to be criticized publicly for not taking them in.

When Annette and her brothers were invited to spend the summer at Kellaway Manor, Annette couldn't get away from her aunt and the town of Silton fast enough.  Even though she thought she had found a way out of Aunt Ruth's house by accepting the vicar's marriage proposal, it would not be a love match.  Simply an escape from her aunt's abuse and guardianship.  She hoped to have time away from all of the stress by visiting her parent's friends, the Kellaways.

Annette had visited the Kellaways in the past with her parents, but her brothers had never been there.  She knew their mischievous antics could cause problems, but she hoped she would be able to instruct them.  She had done the best she could to raise her young brothers, but she knew she needed help.  The need for help was another reason why she was considering the vicar's proposal.

Dr. Owen Kellaway remembered Annette, and she certainly remembered him and his own mischievous ways when he was young.  After all, when she was previously there, he had led her into an "adventure" that ended up with her being hurt.

Owen was immediately drawn to Annette and her dedication to her little brothers.  The more he learned about their lives, the more he wanted to help them, but Annette wasn't interested in a relationship with Owen.  However, she did realize he could help her instruct and properly teach her brothers to be gentlemen.  She finally agreed to a proper friendship.  She had no desire to be taken in by his charm or flirtation, but she thought she was safe to have him as a much needed friend.

____________

It is pretty evident early on that Annette and Owen's friendship will develop into a love relationship.  However, Annette's aunt had accepted the vicar's proposal for Annette and she has threatened to send her brothers to an orphanage.  No matter who Annette marries, her aunt is still her brother's guardian and has total control over them.

As with any "Cinderella" story, you really want to see the wicked guardian's plans thwarted.

Jumbo High Corner Cat Litter Box Review

litter box

We currently only have one cat, but we got her a jumbo litter box anyway. There are several pros to this choice.

First, it keeps more litter in the box. The cat only digs litter out onto the floor if she happens to be facing that particular way. So my floors stay cleaner.

Second, out cat likes the extra space to turn around in the box, and to text out multiple dig areas. She seems much happier with this litter box.

Third, with the larger litter box, scooping once a day for one cat is plenty.

I chose this particular box because it doesn't come with a lid. Years ago we had a high side one with a lid, and one of our cats at that time, peed just high enough to have it go in between the lower box and the lid. It was not fun trying various options to keep it contained and cleaned up.

This particular litter box is plenty high enough on the sides to keep any higher sprays contained in the box.

The entrance is midway through the front side, making it easy to enter and exit if need be. She also steps up onto the edge of the higher sides, and that works too. But with this, she has a choice.

I preferred the corner box as compared to the rectangle box. The corner box is still spacious, and takes up a little less room than the rectangle box. I also prefer the entrance/exit location on the corner box.

This box also is smooth on the inside and is easy to wipe down.

These newer toys make ideal gifts for birthday and Christmas because they can be chosen with a child's age in mind and because they are made by a reputable company.

If you are looking for an out-of-production toy that evokes feelings of nostalgia, you will find some of them included on this page, too. Be sure to note that vintage toys do not meet todays safety recommendations and are likely not safe for young children.

FISHER-PRICE TOY REVIEWS

This is an old one! My children thoroughly enjoyed playing with the Discovery Cottage in the 1990s. I have fond memories of this toy because of that fact.

Brilliant Basics Hug 'n Giggle Baby

The Hug 'n Giggle Baby doll is a delightful toy that was produced in 2010 and intended for the youngest baby girl and once adopted by your daughter becomes a treasured doll.

Christmas Sing-a-Ma-Jigs Reviewed

The Sing-a-Ma-Jigs were designed for older children but even adults collected them. They were produced in and around 2010.

Zoo Talkers Little People Animal Sounds Zoo Reviewed

This Little People-themed toy from 2011 introduced young children to wild animals. My young grandson was here recently. Learning animal sounds was definitely something we did during his visit. This toy would have been a brilliant addition to our play.

Laugh & Learn Fun with Friends Musical Table Reviewed

Released in 2008 and reissued in 2011, the Musical Table is great fun for children aged six to 36 months. With or without the legs, allowing it to be versatile for babies and toddlers.

Laugh & Learn Love to Play Puppy Reviewed

Recommended for children aged 6 months and up, this puppy is very popular and has been released in various versions since about 2003.

Fisher-Price Corn Popper Toy

An annoying but much beloved toy, the corn popper will have your new walker doing laps! It was first produced in 1957 and it is still being produced today. You can buy the one today here on Amazon.

Octonauts Vegimals

This toy series was inspired by a 2010 television program and consists of little people who are half animal and half vegetable. Great for imaginary play based on the series.

That's it for my list for today. Stay tuned for additional reviews.

Are you and your children fans of Fisher-Price toys? Do you have a favorite toy by the company or maybe multiple favorites?

A Review Of How to Repot Roses

 pink, red and cream roses

We are anticipating moving house in the future and i have decided that i want to take some of my outdoor plants with me. I especially want to take our roses.

Some of the roses are already in pots as they were ones I inherited from my parents, others are in the ground and are either special to us or ones I "rescued" so have some emotional meaning for me.

So the roses in pots really do need repotting now and I want to remove the roses in the ground soon as I have so much to do to prepare for the move, it is a task I can get done now.

As it is a seasonal, time sensitive task I will not have much more opportunity to do it reliably and I do not want to leave it too near to the date we put the house on the market as I will be overrun with other jobs by then.

I adore roses, i find there is nothing quite like their beautiful, often delicately scented blooms and I love the way they develop from tiny tight buds to full blooms.

I understand many people find them a bit daunting to prune but it isn't that difficult. However I suspect our buyers will be people who want a simple easy garden so wherever I can I will take them with me. I am leaving some as they are way to big to move, but the smaller ones are coming with us.

There are two types of moving I need to do, one is to move from a pot to a larger pot, this move is less stressful for the rose. The other is from the ground to a container, which is a little more stressful and requires more care. Roses are very beautiful and very tough plants, but they can still suffer stress when their environment is changed. However with the correct timing, care and technique it can be done safely and steadily.

Just a note I am discussing this in terms of being in the UK with its climate and temperatures. If you are not in the UK please find out when roses are in their dormant phase, never when they are actively growing or blooming and only move during this time of year.

When to Repot Roses

So because timing is so vital part of this moving process for roses in the UK we can only move roses in the late Autumn to the very early Spring, so around November to March. It is very important not to move roses when the ground is frozen. Also never attempt to do it in late Spring or summer during new active growth or blooming.

If we really missed the best part of the year to repot, it can still be done, but the rose will need a lot more care and attention and this is far from ideal if we are already busy with other moving house jobs.

Wherever you live it is best to do this work when the rose is dormant, so not actively growing or blooming.

Tools And Equipment Required

  • A sharp spade or fork- if digging out of the ground
  • Secateurs. I use Wolf Garten Secateurs
  • A large deep pot. Roses like a deep container with good drainage.
  • Good quality compost
  • Perlite for aeration and drainage
  • Mulch
  • A garden trowel to mix the compost and perlite together
  • Mesh or a broken crock to place over the drainage holes.
  • Good quality thick or thorn resistant gloves. These are essential and the thicker and more thorn resistant the better! I even sometimes wear 2 pairs of gloves one thinner inner pair a plus a thick pair on top.
  • Eye protection. I use wrap around sunglasses or protective eyewear as the last thing you want is thorns or whippy stems in your eyes. This is essential.
  • Clothing that covers your arms and body. As it will be cold here that is no problem layering up and wearing a thick jacket to protect ourselves for thorns and whippy stems.

How Much Time Does It Take To Repot Roses

As this can be heavy work and is not the easiest garden job, I would recommend doing the whole of one rose first, so water a few the day before but aim to do one rose at a time.

You may find that one rose at a time is enough. Do not attempt to over do it as you cannot leave a rose partially out of its pot or not settled in properly. I usually allow an hour per rose if moving from pot to pot, longer if you are digging out of the ground.

Personally I suggest a mug of tea, coffee or hot chocolate after each rose is completed, then reassess if you want to do another one that day!

How to Move a Rose To A Bigger Pot

I generally try to repot plants in pots every few years and especially if I see roots coming out the base of the container which generally means it is pot bound, or it becomes difficult to water them. If the growth of the rose is poor, it looks sickly, or if roots appear on the surface it is becoming more urgent.

We pot up in to a container one size up usually. If it is significantly bigger the plant may find a bit of trouble establishing and so just one size up is best.

Roses like a rich but well drained soil. I am using a peat free general compost and adding in about 20% perlite for air and drainage and to keep the container a bit lighter. I used to place a layer of gravel at the base for drainage, but recent thinking is that is not necessary and can be counter productive.

This year I am seriously considering repotting not into pots but in fabric heavy duty fabric planters with handles. As these shrubs will be moving with us these will be lighter and easier to move and they last around 2-3 years which should cover the moving period. They are considerably less expensive than pots as well.

The Rose Moving Plan

1. Water the rose. The day before water the rose, just enough for it to be moist, not waterlogged. This helps to make it easier to get the rose out the pot and reduces the shock on the plant.

2. Prune the rose. I like to do this next before moving the plant so that it is smaller and easier to handle and a few less thorns.

This involves, with most shrub and standard roses taking about a third of the growth off, removing dead stems, crossing stems and then reducing the plant by about a third.

If its a climbing rose just trim back the canes a little to be comfortable for you to handle. Once is more than enough to be smacked by a stray whippy rose cane believe me !

It is also useful at this stage to gently tie up the canes or stems gently with rope as roses are thorny and it is kinder to our skin to keep them out of the way as much as possible.

Some people can tolerate thorn bites but I cannot and to be honest it is always safety first when dealing with roses.

In addition do wear eye protection, it is simply not worth a whippy stem or a thorn getting into the eyes, do not take that chance.

I usually find some brown parts of the stems so trim these off with secateurs. Some crossing stems are also common so best to take one off so that they do not rub each other and cause friction and a wound or infection to get in. Make sure to make clean cuts.

3. Prepare the new planter. especially if it is a large pot , I am repotting into 30, 50 and 75 litre planters so it is best to place it in the final position before adding compost and the rose. It will be heavy afterwards. Once in position place a crock or mesh over any drainage holes, just to prevent them getting blocked by the compost mix. Then mix the compost and perlite and place about a third into the pot.

4. Remove the rose from its pot

The easiest way is to tip the pot on its side onto a old towel or blanket if the pot is more delicate and gently ease the plant out. This is also kinder to your back. If it is pot  bound I usually end up gently tapping the sides of the pot with my heavily gloved hands to loosen it up. Be very careful if it is delicate material and be careful with your hands too, just tap gently.

I would  not recommend trying to lift a rose vertically out of a pot. They are usually surprisingly heavy and it is hard to get a good grip on a thorny plant without doing some damage to yourself. I speak from painful experience!

In one case I found to my surprise that one of the roses had actually rooted through the pot and into the ground! In this case I had to carefully and cleanly cut the root before I could move the rose out the pot. Then I had to dig the root out!

5. Check the condition of the roots, these are the most important parts of the plant. If any look dead or are rotten or mushy, cut them out with sharp secateurs.

6.Gently lift the rose, with help if you need it, roses can be heavier than you might think. In fact I would always advise getting help with this task. Position the rose in the new container so the grafting point which is usually easily seen by a join or bumpy part of the stem sits just above soil level. Then fill around the rose carefully with the compost mix, gently firming it around the rose. I usually leave about 2 inches free at the top of the container for easy watering. If you fill to the brim there is no room for watering.

7. Then water the rose thoroughly until water runs through the drainage holes. After watering I usually find the soil settles somewhat and I need to add more compost plus perlite mix to the top of the pot.

How To Lift A Rose From The Ground and Move It Into A Container

You need to be more careful doing this, but if you really want to take the rose with you it is possible. The type of soil you have may make a difference as to how easy this is. We have heavy clay soil and digging it is a workout at the best of times, a lighter soil will be easier.

Also if the rose is older and well established it may have a very deep root run. More than a few years old it gets harder to move. If the rose is very big or very old you may want to weigh up if taking cuttings might be kinder to you and the rose.

We are in this position with two roses, one is very old, over 30 years old and I do feel the shock might be too much, so instead I am taking cuttings from this old rose. The other is an iceberg climber, it is a very vigorous climber and huge now. It would be a difficult task.

I will prune it but I really feel it is a big job for us to move it into a pot and kinder to the rose to leave it in the ground where it is happy, so I will take cuttings that can come with us.

The Rose Moving From The Ground Plan

1.Pruning. So again we will prune the rose by around a third

2. Dig a wide circle all around the rose with a sharp spade . The idea is to lift as much of the root ball as possible and to not disturb the roots. Do bear in mind that a root ball on an established rose can be very heavy. In general a digging range about twelve inches around is usually ok. You will invariably break some roots, it is inevitable but not a disaster, in most cases the rose will cope.

3. Lift the rose carefully and ideally with two people. You will need to slide a spade or two under the rose and lift at the same time. This can be very heavy and difficult work with a big established rose. It is a good idea in my experience to have an old sack or compost bag nearby to lay the rose on if you need  a short break between lifting and potting.

4.Then place into the new container as we did for the pot to pot transfer and of course water well and top up with the compost mix and mulch as required. You will need to watch it carefully over the coming weeks and months for signs of stress and be very vigilant about watering and feeding .

After Care For Any Potted Or Repotted Rose

  •  Feed from April to August, which is in UK the main growing period  with a rose fertiliser. The compost does have some feed in it but roses are especially hungry plants so always need the additional and regular feeding. Now in a container you are fully responsible for all its food and water as it can no longer gain anything from the ground.
  •  Check the drainage holes are not blocked every so often as roses hate wet roots and you do risk rotting roots if they stay wet for long periods of time.
  • Mulch the rose after repotting and periodically to conserve water and reduce weeds.
  • Once roses are in containers we are completely responsible for their source of water and food. Roses need both regularly and are usually heavy feeders so it is now up to us to provide this for them.

There are things to consider when moving house with plants  which I discuss in my article  Advantages and Disadvantages Of Moving House With Your  Garden Plants.

With care and good handling roses can be potted on successfully and do well. Is this my favourite gardening task? No, not really, we have to do it in the cold and it is thorny and heavy, slow, hard work. However the blooms are so gorgeous and so it is well worth it. In a few months when I have forgotten the thorn bites and see the beauty of the roses, it will bring me great happiness.

For us we are doing this as a temporary measure until we can get them in the ground and we want to keep the inherited roses and take them with us when we move house. If you would like roses in containers as a permanent feature it is easier to buy roses that are smaller, minature or check those that will be happy long term in containers. Either way roses have a special place in my heart.
