Dog Lovers

Standard Poodle
Dogs are considered 'Man's Best Friend'

The phrase "Man's Best Friend" has been around since the 18th century, referred to in many ways, as shown in this Wikipedia article. Basically, it refers to a dog's loyalty, and companionship to us humans. No matter which breed one chooses, we all love our dogs.

Perfect Gift for My Brother and Sister-in-Law - They Love Their 'Abbi Girl' Boston Terrier Puppy

Boston Terrier Puppy

Abbi's Favorite Mug

I'm 'Auntie Pat' to my brother's Boston Terrier rescue pup, Abbi. She 'adores' me - really! :) Abbi told me I needed to get her 'people' each one of this personalized mug with an image of a Boston Terrier on it ~ just to keep the focus on her, the 'most important' creature in the house! I agree with you, Abbi. :)

Clever Cat Cups

Calico Cat

Calico is a Color...

Did you know that the Calico Cat is not a breed? It's a 'color pattern' that is mostly white, with patches of two other colors, most often in the range of the orange tabby and black. And, as an interesting bit of 'trivia', most calico cats are female! :-)

A Persian is just one of the breeds that can end up with Calico coloring. Others can include the Manx, the American and British Shorthair, and the Japanese Bobtail.

Clever for Cat Owners...

If you are the resident human of a pet cat, you will appreciate this coffee cup message! Any cat-person knows this to be true! :)

DOGS HAVE OWNERS CATS HAVE STAFF

A Kitten Named Stormy

A rescue kitten in tuxedo black & white colors

I once spent 6 weeks 'fostering' this kitten until his "Forever Home" could be found.

Tuxedo Cats

As the name implies, a Tuxedo cat is named for the fact that it is bicolor - black and white - resembling 'formal wear', like a tuxedo.

The tuxedo cat has been very popular in cartoon form over the years, including Felix Cat, Tomcat from Tom & Jerry, and Sylvester (Puddy Tat) cat.

A tuxedo cat is also one of the three types of cats in the popular video game Minecraft.

Maine Coon Cat

A Maine Coon Cat

Meet "Mister", the Maine Coon Cat

When Mister came to live with his owner as a kitten, she wanted to wait and observe him for a few days before deciding on a name. Sometimes a kitten's personality will suggest the perfect name. Well, several days went by and the kitten's 'antics' produced the following responses frequently from owner: "You better stop that now, Mister", "You better watch out, Mister, you're going to be in trouble".... :).

After a week or so, she realized that she was always using the word "Mister" in sentences to the kitten... and thus his name evolved! :)

What is a Tabby Cat?

A tabby (or gray tiger as they are sometimes known), is any domestic cat that has a coat featuring distinctive stripes, dots, lines or swirling patterns. A Tabby cat is not a breed, but instead is a color pattern.

Usually this coat pattern will appear together with a mark resembling an 'M' on its forehead. This type of cat includes the Maine Coon Cat, which we think 'Mister' is.

Summary

I love coffee mugs (have collected clever ones for years to use regularly for my morning coffee times). When it comes to pets, I'm primarily a cat person, but there are also several dogs sharing space with others in my family.

Skeletons for Halloween - Reviewed

Celebrate Halloween with Skeletons
Skeleton Photo by mbgphoto

I remember when the most common Halloween decorations were Jack-o-Lanterns.  If you can go by my neighborhood that is no longer the case.  As I drive around my area the most common decoration, by far, is skeletons.  There are skeletons on mailboxes, on shutters, sitting on benches, hanging from trees and standing out in the middle of the yards.  In the photo above you see a skeleton that is larger than the house with a skeleton dog sitting next to it.

I did a little searching on Google about what are the most popular decorations right now and they listed skeletons, pumpkins, spiders, witches and bats.  Google search data claimed that skeletons are the most popular overall. So it looks like my neighborhood is right in the swing of things!!

In this post I will give you a bit of information on the history of the Halloween decoration and share with you the photos I took of many of the skeletons in my neighborhood.
Two Skeletons on Chairs

I love these two skeletons relaxing on chairs in a front yard.

History of Skeletons for Halloween

Did you ever wonder why there are skeletons on Halloween?  The festival that we now call Halloween started out as a Celtic harvest festival called Samhain.  It was celebrated on October 31st at the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the long, cold, dark days of winter.  The festival symbolized one of death and was celebrated with bon fires--called "bone fires" and symbols of the dead such as ghosts and skeletons.  This is also where our graveyards and haunted houses came to celebrate the Halloween holiday.

Climbing Skeletons

There is a house a street over from us that as a multitude of skeletons including the ones climbing on their shutters, as seen above, and one on their mailbox as seen in the photo below.

Jazz Ramsey: A K-9 Hallmark Mystery Movie Review

Jazz Ramsey: K-9 Hallmark Movie
There is nothing like a gorgeous male to grab your attention and force you to watch a movie!  Yes, I am talking about Zeus (Dillon the Dog), the handsome dog in Jazz Ramsey: A K-9 Mystery movie.

I had assumed the Jazz Ramsey mystery movie would follow the book series by the same name and, to some degree, it does.  This movie is based on the plot of the second book in the series, The Secret of Bones: A Jazz Ramsey Mystery Book 2, but uses the German Shepherd breed from the first book.

They do make it clear in the movie that Jazz trains cadaver dogs setting the stage for a different dog or dog breed to be used if Hallmark decides to make it into a series.  Although, let's face it, they are not likely to find a more handsome lad in all the world!

I suspect they used the German Shepherd because that is the breed most of us associate with police dogs, but cadaver dogs include the Border Collie, Labrador Retriever, Belgian Malinois, Coonhound, Beagle, Doberman, English Springer Spaniel, St. Bernard, several other shepherd breeds and of course, the Bloodhound. These breeds are chosen due to their anatomical & behavioral traits and go through hundreds of hours of training.  They are very impressive and dedicated dogs.

Jazz Ramsey: A K-9 Mystery Movie Synopsis

Jazz Ramsey

Jazz Ramsey has been invited to Astor Academy (high school for girls) to give a demonstration of the remarkable abilities of the cadaver dog she is currently training to the school's Forensic Science Club.  She is allowed to set up her presentation in a rarely used room on the 3rd floor of the school.

In preparation, she hides two human bones in the room for Zeus, the cadaver dog, to find.  When the club members are assembled, Jazz gives Zeus the order to find, but he uncovers more then the hidden bones.

Zeus finds a real, complete dead body that has been hidden under the floor.  Because of the glasses and the clothes on the body, Jazz and the headmistress believe it is Bernadette Quinn, a retired teacher that was not very popular.

There are a lot of secrets discovered during the investigation.  The ending was rather surprising, which makes this movie the perfect mystery!

Jazz Ramsey: A K-9 Mystery is not currently available on Amazon.  Because it was so recently released, it is only available on the Hallmark Channel or on a streaming service that offers Hallmark movies.  I watched it on Frndly TV.

Just My Type Hallmark Movie Review

just my type hallmark movie
This Hallmark movie caught my attention as I was scrolling down the list of movie titles available to watch.

We have all heard the phrase "just my type" in reference to characteristics an individual possesses that appeal to us. However, in this case, for some reason the word "type" grabbed by attention and made me think of typing and typewriters.

I must have seen a trailer in the past for this movie because the main characters are writers.  As a matter of fact, Martin Clayborne (the published author in the movie) writes all of his books on his old faithful typewriter.  Somewhere in my mind, I must have recalled that tidbit of information.

The movie title, Just My Type, is a cute play on words for both reasons: the typewriter element and the attraction element.

One more thing, it never hurts to bring a beautiful puppy along to melt our hearts.  Ernie (Briar, the golden retriever) is just my type!

Just My Type Movie Synopsis

Vanessa Sills (Bethany Joy Lenz) is a magazine writer in NYC.  She is up for a promotion to senior lifestyle editor for the magazine, but she has heavy competition.  Her next article is ready so she decides she has time for a short weekend break with her friend.  When she recognizes the reclusive mystery writer, Martin Clayborne, in a small town gas station, she reconsiders her next article.  Perhaps, she should replace it with an interview with Clayborne.  After all, he hasn't given an interview in 5 years.  Getting that interview might be just what she needs to further her career.

Martin Clayborne (Brett Dalton) is enjoying his solitude in a small town that respects everyone's anonymity and privacy.  Marty is very active in the town activities.  Even when he is mistaken for a gas station attendant, he jumps right in to pump gas.  When Vanessa recognizes him as her favorite mystery writer, he avoids admitting his true identity by saying he "gets that all of the time".  Of course, his dog, Ernie, who is featured on his book cover, is lying on the ground not too far away.  In spite of his denial, it is pretty obvious to Vanessa that he is Martin Clayborne.

This is where the real fun begins!  Vanessa starts finding ways to "bump" into Martin in hopes of convincing him to give her an interview, which he really does not want to do.

Perhaps, she is just the type to get him to open up and give that long awaited interview!

How One Stray Dog Changed Lives Forever - 5 Star Movie Review

How One Stray Dog Changed Lives Forever - 5 Star Movie Review

The Storyline of Arthur The King

"Arthur The King," released in 2023, is a heartwarming movie based on a true story that will appeal to anyone who believes in the unbreakable bond between humans and animals.

The plot centers around a Swedish adventure racer, Mikael Lindnord, who encounters a stray dog while competing in Ecuador's grueling 400-mile Adventure Racing World Championship.

This isn't just any stray; this dog, later named Arthur, attaches himself to Mikael and his team, following them through harsh jungles, treacherous terrain, and even a perilous river.

The story is not just about an adventure race; it's a tale of unexpected companionship, resilience, and the power of kindness. As Arthur overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds alongside the team, the film takes us on a journey of hope, perseverance, and the transformative effect of compassion.

It's a challenging and inspirational story that reminds us of the strength in our bonds, not just with each other but with every living creature.

The Talented Cast - Starring Mark Wahlberg

"Arthur The King" boasts an exceptional cast that brings this remarkable story to life. Mark Wahlberg stars as Mikael Lindnord, delivering a heartfelt performance that captures the spirit of a man unexpectedly finding a friend in the most unlikely of circumstances.

Simu Liu plays a pivotal role as a teammate who initially questions the practicality of bringing a stray dog along but eventually becomes one of Arthur's biggest supporters.

Nathalie Emmanuel shines as the team medic whose gentle care for Arthur reflects the film's themes of empathy and kindness.

The chemistry among the cast members is palpable, making their journey feel authentic and engaging. Each actor brings depth and warmth to their roles, ensuring that the audience is not just watching an adventure unfold but experiencing it alongside them.

Their performances collectively contribute to the film's powerful message of friendship, determination, and joy from unexpected connections.

Why I Loved This Movie

I absolutely loved "Arthur the King" because it depicts a story almost too incredible to be true.

This movie's portrayal of something so challenging and seemingly impossible truly resonates. Watching Arthur's unwavering determination to stay with his newfound friends through every obstacle is heartwarming and awe-inspiring.

This movie leaves you with a deep sense of hope and a renewed belief in humanity's goodness. It's so moving that it compelled me to Google the real Arthur to learn more about this extraordinary dog and his incredible journey with Mikael and his team.

The film's ability to evoke such emotions and curiosity is a testament to its powerful storytelling and the genuine nature of its characters. It's not just a movie; it's a reminder of the unyielding spirit that can be found in all of us and the animals we share our lives with.

About The Real Arthur

The Arthur Foundation

The real Arthur became much more than just a dog who followed a team in an adventure race; he became a symbol of hope and resilience.

After being adopted by Mikael Lindnord, Arthur was involved in numerous charitable endeavors, helping to raise awareness and funds for animal welfare organizations worldwide.

Arthur's story inspired countless people, leading to the establishment of the Arthur Foundation, which supports stray dogs and other animal-related causes.

Sadly, Arthur passed away in 2020 due to complications from surgery. His death was a significant loss for all who followed his incredible story, but his legacy lives on.

Arthur's journey from a stray dog in Ecuador to a global ambassador for animal welfare is a testament to what kindness and love can achieve. Even after his passing, his impact continues to inspire positive change.

Visit Arthur's website for more information about him and his ongoing impact. Arthur's accomplishments and the positive change he championed make Arthur the King a movie worth watching and a story worth remembering and celebrating.

Reviewing Murder at Sea Oaks Beach

Sea Oats Beach Photo by mbgphoto

If you enjoy reading cozy mysteries, Karen C. Whalen has a wonderful selection of books for you.  Her first two series The Dinner Club Mysteries and The Tow Truck Mysteries, all take place in Colorado and are fun reading and keep you guessing at the culprit.  In her latest book Murder at Sea Oaks Beach, the author brings you to a new setting, the coast of North Carolina.  This beach setting makes a wonderful cozy mystery to read on your summer vacation or just sitting in your own back yard.

Brief Summary of Murder at Sea Oaks Beach

In this cozy mystery we meet Breanna Hart.  She is new to the beach town and rents a Airbnb not far from the beach.  Since she is a dog lover she decides to volunteer at the local animal shelter.

Along the way we meet a host of delightful characters.  There is a local surfer, Roscoe, who makes his living pushing a red cart on the beach selling flavored ices. Breanna meets him while walking on the beach.

The animal shelter shares a building with the Sea Oats police department and Breanna meets several of the members of the police department.  There is Ty, the handsome officer she meets on her first day.  There is Claire, the vet tech, who becomes a friend and others that work there become friends too, particularly Serenity and Emma.

Breanna has a "Social Anxiety Disorder" that makes it hard for her to socialize with new people, but she is working hard to overcome her anxiety.

Breanna loves her job as a volunteer, particularly walking the dogs.
All is going well with her job and the people she meets until the police chief is found dead under suspicious circumstances.  He is found in a dog's cage with bite marks all over him.  The dog is Samson, a bulldog that is one of Breanna's favorites.  The investigation into the Chief's death takes a lot of twist and turns.  When Breanna hears that Samson will be put down because he is implicated in the Chief's death, she is determined to do all she can to help find the true killer and clear Samson.

My Recommendation

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it for anyone looking for a good cozy mystery.  It will be particularly interesting for anyone loving dogs, mysteries and the beach.

Karen Whalen's latest book can be ordered on Amazon.  It will be released

The Dog Man Series by Dav Pilkey - Book Review

From the creator of Captain Underpants comes a spin-off series called Dog Man!  The Dog Man Series is a group of graphic novels for children ages 8 to 10 created by writer/illustrator/cartoonist Dav Pilkey. My 10-year-old grandson is a huge fan of these books.

When Tyler first showed me his Dog Man books, I saw them from an adult standpoint and thought them rather silly – cartoon strips with dopey dialogue and ridiculous situations. Then I saw the joy in my grandson’s demeanor as he described these books to me.  I quickly changed my mind when I realized how much he loved them and how funny he thought they were. For a ten year old boy to enjoy reading books, no matter how silly, is something any adult should encourage.

A selection of books from the Dog Man Series by Dav Pilkey

The Dog Man Series

The book series centers around Dog Man, a new hero with the body of a police officer and the head of a dog sewed together. They are graphic novel chapter books written and illustrated by Dav Pilkey. There are currently 12 books in the series, with a new one coming out in December 2024.

Author Dav Pilkey

Dav Pilkey, Author of the Dog Man Series of Books
Source: Wikipedia

The author’s true name is David Murray Pilkey Jr. Early on, Dave worked for Pizza Hut and someone left the ‘e’ off on his name tag. Thus, he adopted this atypical spelling as his pen name ‘Dav’ when he began writing his novels for children.

Dav was diagnosed with ADHD as a kid and was also dyslexic. He was so disruptive in class that his teachers made him sit out in the hallway each day. Well, Dav loved to draw and enjoyed making up stories, so he spent his hallway time creating his own original comic books.  Luckily Dav was not a very good listener when told by his teacher that he couldn’t spend the rest of his life making silly books because the adventures he created later became his bestselling books of Captain Underpants and Dog Man.

In addition to the Dog Man series and the already popular Captain Underpants series, Dav Pilkey has published six other series of graphic novels, plus 18 standalone stories.

Summary

Adults may find these children’s series of graphic novels silly, but children, like my grandson Tyler, love them and Dav Pilkey has proven that a difficult beginning in school can be overcome with a positive attitude and a born talent for drawing and storytelling.

Today he is a bestseller author and illustrator of numerous children's book series, with his Dog Man Grime and Punishment being his #1 best-selling book in the United States and Canada. His Cat Kid Comic Club book is also on the top-25 list.

Check out the Dav Pilkey website here for a list of all his children's book series.

Book #13 in the Dog Man Series coming December 3, 2024. Preorder below.

Reviewing Ten Tips For A Beautiful Garden On A Budget

Weigelia in flower

Gardening is an amazing, absorbing hobby and one that I love. However,
especially these days, it can get very expensive.

There are now so many things you can buy for the garden and plants have become more expensive to buy. We may not all always have lots of cash to spend on the garden and this should not deplete our enjoyment of this wonderful hobby and enjoyment of any outdoor space we have.

Gardening on a small budget doesn’t have to mean sacrificing a lovely garden or a creative approach to gardening, in fact sometimes quite the opposite. Here are some inexpensive or free garden ideas we can implement to save money where we can so that your garden does not need to suffer if you are on a tight budget.

If you do have more to spend you can spend on really lovely items. Many gardeners do these garden tricks without being on a tight budget to save money !

Purple large flower clematis

1. Grow From Seed And Take Cuttings.

Growing your own salads, vegetables, annuals, and perennials from seeds is cost-effective and truly rewarding. We can use egg boxes to grow your seeds in rather than buying seed trays.

Rather than buying them part grown from the garden centre or buying salad from the shop  start growing from seed. You can use old margarine or yoghurt pots and really any clean washed container really to start the seeds.

If you grow Bamboo you can harvest the canes and use them to make your own plant supports and tripods which saves money on buying them.

Take cuttings of plants you love in your own garden and ask friends, family and neighbours if you can take cuttings of plants you admire in their gardens. You can use these to increase your supply of plants for free. I love taking cuttings and seeing them grow. Do take more cuttings than you need as some may not take.

If you are very successful and do not need all the cuttings you can see if any friends, family or neighbours would consider a swap with you.

You could also try to sell the cuttings at a car boot sale or use an honesty box outside  your home to sell the excess cuttings.

2. Repurpose.

Get thinking creatively about materials you already have around the house and garden. Think before you throw anything away if it can be used in the garden in a creative or useful way.

Reuse old equipment as planters, for example old sinks can be reused in the garden as a planter, an old plastic dog bed can become a small pond. You are only limited by your imagination!

3. Buy Second Hand Tools And Share Equipment

Look for second-hand gardening tools or discuss tool sharing with your friends, family or neighbours. Some of our best spades and forks have been found at car boot sales and even at an Antique shop.

You may only need some expensive tools a couple of times a year, so makes sense if you can club together to buy together and share or alternatively see if you can rent any tools.

Get a sharpening stone to keep tools in good order and last longer. Also oil tools that require it to make them last longer.

4.Look for Free And Discounted Plants

Keep an eye out for free or discounted plants.

I am always searching for the section in garden centres where they put the old last season plants that did not sell or ones that look shabby. I call them my  "rescue" plant section and usually with a little care and watering you can being them back to life and have paid a fraction of the cost.

Sometimes neighbours or local gardening groups share excess plants.

5. Paint Your Fence

We have just done this to give the garden a different look. Painting protects it from the weather which is always good and smartens up an old fence.

You can either go for black or brown or a dark green to blend or make your fence a bold feature by painting it a bright colour.

All it takes is a pot of paint and a little work.

We went for black Cuprinol fence paint this time as we have found it to be durable and gives a good coverage and colour.

The plants really stand out against it and the black colour helps to make the garden feel bigger as the dark colour recedes.

6. Mulch Pots And Containers.

Highlight your containers and pots by adding a decorative mulch. It is surprising what a difference this can make to a container. As it is a small space you can look to buy decorative mulches like pebbles, slate, shells or black river rocks

Mulch helps conserve moisture in the soil and suppresses weeds, while also giving your display a beautiful finish. As you will not use much in a container you can use a good quality decorative mulch which will give a dramatic impact.

7. Make Your Own Bird Bath

I advocate for every garden to have a bird bath as it is one of the single most important things for garden birds for water and bathing. If you can afford one of the beautiful iron or decorative ones then that is great.

However if money is tight you can make your own bird bath. You will need a terracotta or stone pot, a saucer, and glue suitable for outside work. Simply turn the pot upside down, glue the saucer to the bottom of the pot, wait until the glue has dried and then fill it with fresh clean water. The birds will love you for it.

Alternatively simply use old  plastic or terracotta saucers, or even an upturned bin lid and fill with water. Place them in a safe area for birds and watch them enjoy a place to drink and bathe.

8. Make Your Own Plant Labels.

Reuse ice cream or lollipop sticks or any similar product to label your plants in containers, seeds or in the garden. They may not last as long as more expensive or beautiful bought plant labels,  but they are useful as a temporary measure for seeds and you can replace them when they wear out.

Personally I strike a balance using free or cheap plant labels for seeds and more expensive but durable metal plant labels for more permanent plants

9.Lighting In The Garden

Sorting  our gardens with  lighting makes them a useable and lovely space to be in the evenings.

However employing an electrician to fix up outdoor electrical lighting can be very expensive. An alternative is to use Solar-powered lights which are more cost-effective, portable and require no installation costs.

10. Protect Your Pots.

Instead of buying expensive terracotta feet to raise pots off the ground to improve drainage, prevent waterlogging and frost damage,  try using old bricks you may have and placing pots on those.

Even though gardening is one of my main hobbies and interests, I employ most of these money saving tips. It means that I then have money to spend on other things for the garden that I may need or want!
