Limitless - Book Review

Limitless Book Cover

There would be gold medals and world records, and plenty of them, but that is not the Limitless in Mallory Weggemann's story.  No.

Becoming limitless was, and is, about diving in to discover what is on the other side of fear—the kind of fear that could have become more paralyzing than her T10 spinal injury.

Mallory's story could have ended when she was 18, but as we shall read, it did not. Some might say it began then... her story. I'm not seeing that.

What I did see in reading this memoir is that it is much more than a story of how Mallory Weggemann became a Paralympic champion. Amazing as that is, the heroic journey is in how a young woman chose to be more than what others imagined she could be after becoming a paraplegic.

I saw how it is possible, through choices, to be more than our circumstances—how one moves forward from pain, and devastation, and the grief caused by both.

Right alongside Mallory, I learned how we cannot ever live less of a life than we are capable of living.

We all have disabilities. Some are just more visible than others. The thing is this: We must not let them define us. We are so much more than the artificial limits that contain us if we surrender to them.

I encourage you to experience Mallory Weggemann's victorious anthem, as sung on the pages of Limitless and on many championship podiums. It is my hope that those who do so will begin to envision a new limitless life for themselves.

    1. It is an important story because what Mallory Weggemann is demonstrating for us, in living color, is how to truly live... no matter what. She shows us a human spirit that is larger than life.

  2. I actually know a young woman who suffered a similar injury and has never accepted any boundary - always facing life on her own terms. Stories like Mallory's definitely show how anyone can become 'limitless'.

You always find the most inspirational stories to share with us, Diana. Thank you.

    1. I am so happy for this young woman. I read to fill myself with the very life of life, as known by those who are living it. I draw inspiration, and hope, from gleaning wisdom, in all its forms, from true stories of sheer grit, and determination, and the joy that is often revealed in the overcoming.

    1. I just started reading it for a second time. I love Mallory and her husband, Jay. Their entire family is incredibly beautiful. If you follow them on Facebook, they are now sharing their baby dream (having persevered through an epic infertility challenge). I have so much respect for them.

    1. I think it's possible we don't realize how we are limiting ourselves at times when our perspective may be skewed by the rough patch we are experiencing.

  5. This sounds like a very interesting book indeed. I have a good friend who is also a paraplegic and yes, they are inspiring in their will to accomplish that which we think they will never do again. I'm so happy that this story is written for many who find themselves locked into a certain way of thinking. If she can do this, what the heck is stopping me? Good questions and a great resolve to make things happen! Thanks Diana!

  6. Thanks, Diana for this inspiring recommendation. Our daughter-in-laws sister recently passed away from cancer that she had for eight years. She lived her life every day to the fullest, and never let it control her. She was a true inspiration to all of us.

    1. Strength upon strength, for sure. We start to discover just how deep our well is when we go through major trials and trauma. Love your wordsmithing here: "her tenacity is forever etched into our human fabric." Enough said. Can't touch that!
