Reviewing Uses, Benefits And Disadvantages Of Insulated Water Bottles

Two insulated water bottles, one blue, one silver

Before a recent trip to a major city  we went on we decided to buy a couple of insulated water bottles. We knew it would be warm and we had a lot of walking to do. We did not want to keep buying plastic water bottles, partly for environmental reasons and partly due to the expense.

Although the water bottles we purchased were far more expensive than a single plastic water bottle, we knew the cost of single plastic bottles would mount up and we would use these insulated water bottles for many reasons not just this one trip.

In addition we were fed up with plastic water bottles becoming a not very nice rather warm tepid drink within a short period of time and often leaking.

It is so important to keep hydrated in the summer heat we felt it was a worthwhile investment. Now I have experienced travel with one of these insulated water bottles I would never be without one and feel they are an everyday essential for just about everyone.

For us they were a real game changer and helped us to feel much more comfortable and hydrated. We bought two of the 750 ml ones in different colours and it was one of our best purchases.

The reason these insulated water bottles are so good is that they use double walled vacuum insulation to keep the drinks at the right temperature for many hours. Some models including the one we bought keep cold drinks cold and fresh for up to 24 hours, and hot drinks hot for up to 12 hours. Different models will have different times for hot and cold liquids so do be careful to check that out.

They come in a range of sizes from small ones that can be carried easily to big one litre ones for a long trip and other in between options. We found the 75 litre size perfect for our days out. There was no strange taste or smell and it all was just fresh cold water and thirst quenching.

A tip is to fill with water then put in the fridge for a while to have really cold water for your trip or day out. However it is not advised to have freezing cold water as it can upset your stomach, just cold water is best.

Two water bottles, blue one standing, silver on on its side.

Ideas How To Use Insulated Water Bottles.

These insulated water bottles are incredibly versatile and since we have owned them have far more uses than I initially thought.

For City sightseeing trips like ours they are invaluable. Walking for miles and needing regular drinks, these water bottles were fantastic! We added rehydration sachets as well to maximise the benefits of the cool fresh water and sometimes lemon.  We saved a small fortune on city centre cafe visits and found many places to fill them up.

For more serious hiking, biking or camping trips and long nature reserve walks where hydration is important. The size to choose will depend on the length of time you are out, the weather,  and how comfortable you are carrying the size and weight of the bottle.

Fill it with cool water for exercise in the gym, running, yoga, Pilates or spin class to rehydrate. It is useful to add rehydration sachets to the water to help you as well.

On family trips out each family member can have their own individual drink in smaller sizes, maybe each person has a different colour. Alternatively, the family or couple can share a larger size bottle.

Keeping one with you when gardening to keep hydrated or have a lovely coffee, tea or hot chocolate just when you feel like it without having to go inside. This is great for me as an avid gardener I can now stay outside all the time and I do not need to go inside to make a drink! Also as it is sealed, unlike a glass or mug of water you wont get any stray insects in it!

Take hot tea, coffee or fresh cold water with you on your journey to work and for use while at work. For people who work outdoors, it would be a very handy way to hydrate and have good hot drinks available just when you need them.

Very good for keeping fresh cold  water or hot lemon drink by your bed when feeling poorly or post operation, as it is important to keep hydrated and also for taking medication. No need to keep getting up to make drinks when you don't feel like it, or bothering someone else.

Keep one bottle by your bed at night, filled with water,  in case you wake up thirsty, which I often do, when the weather is very hot or humid. The water is much fresher than when it is just in an open glass.

Older people often do not drink enough water to keep hydrated. If they have one of these it is easier for them or carers to monitor how much they are drinking. It is easier to drink more when a bottle is by your side than having to keep getting up to get water or make a drink.

Take one for long train, bus or car journeys and have your hot or cold drink just as fresh as you made it. I once ran out of water on a long train journey in the summer heat and I do not recommend it, I felt quite poorly as I was dehydrated and so since then always make sure I have more than enough water with me.

Benefits Of Insulated Water Bottles

  • They keep drinks cold or hot for hours which is a major benefit and one of the main reasons I wanted buy one. I love this feature as I dislike lukewarm water or a just about cold coffee. It is a lovely thing to have a refreshing cold drink several hours after you have made it or a nice hot coffee or tea halfway through the day. So great for both warmer and colder months.
  • A huge advantage is that many of them and the ones we bought are leakproof. This was my second reason for buying one. Ours have a guarantee against leaks which is a big plus for me. I once had a plastic water bottle that leaked all over on a bus which was embarrassing and then meant I had no water for my rather hot journey. I would certainly choose one that is leakproof.
  • You can also  make your drink exactly how you like it. For example I like water with a hint of lemon. I like my coffee milky. Most coffee shops make it too strong for me. My husband likes coffee strong but not sweet. So we can now customise our drinks the way we want them and have a bottle each.
  • They are perfect for rehydration for travel and days out, exercise and illness.
  • Insulated water bottles are better than constantly buying plastic water bottles then discarding them. Or filling a plastic bottle repeatedly and risking leaks as the plastic weakens or the top seal fails. Instead we can just refill these insulated water bottles helping to reduce plastic use overall and is in time cost effective.
  • In addition most insulated water bottles are made from stainless steel, which makes them strong, though do check individual models and makes for exact construction.
  • There are a variety of useful sizes to choose from. From small bottles perhaps for exercise use, medium sized for carrying around sightseeing all day, to large flasks for long hot days or sickness, we can choose the best for us and our needs.
  • While certainly more expensive than a plastic bottle or take away coffee initially,  over a short period of time you will more than recoup that cost by making your own drinks and using this flask.
  • These insulated water bottles are available in a good choice of colours and designs to suit most needs and styles. We found it useful to have one colour for water and one colour for coffee. Or one colour for each of our different coffee preferences. Ours came available in silver, blue, green, black or white and there are a wide range of colours to choose from in most brands.
  • They are easy to clean. We just clean ours manually in the sink.

Disadvantages Of Insulated Water Bottles

  • Insulated water bottles are significantly more expensive than plastic bottles. However we find the cost recouped really quite quickly once we no longer needed to buy plastic water bottles or so many cafe visits. On our one week trip with them we already saved most if not all of the cost than if we had bought the same volume of water in plastic bottles.
  • They can be heavier and take up a bit more space in a bag or rucksack than a plastic bottle. However on our city break trip and nature walks we have not found this an issue.
  • The bottles are generally opaque so you cannot see from the outside how much of the drink you have left before opening them. We found that you can get an idea by the weight though quite quickly once you are used to them.
  • If you are going to want to refill them often when out and about be careful which size you choose. With our 750ml bottles we found that we could refill them at most water filling points. However, there were some we could not fit the bottle underneath. So if that is a concern perhaps take one smaller bottle to use alongside a larger one in those circumstances or just the smaller bottles.
  • It is important to clean thoroughly after containing tea or coffee.

However for us these insulated water bottles have been wonderful and made life so much easier! A few minor issues are not important compared to the major advantages and now I would absolutely never be without one or two.

So in summary, we think these insulated water bottles are a great find for us and for many people. They look nice and stylish and have a good range of colours to choose from. The size choice is good from small to very large. Many carry a good guarantee against leaks  as well which was important to us. Once bought you will never need to buy plastic throw away water bottles anymore or take away coffees, so you will easily recoup the money spent. As always read the details about each brand carefully and choose based on your own needs and activities.

Finally these would make a lovely thoughtful gift for just about anyone. Especially for a birthday or Christmas present and would also be a thoughtful gift for someone starting work who has a commute, exercising regularly,  someone going travelling, a gardener or an older person, to name a few.

LifePro Waver Whole Body Vibration Plate Review

Two months ago, I purchased the LifePro Waver Whole Body Vibration Plate with a great deal of skepticism. But I am struggling with my health and have been desperate to find some relief. Much to my surprise, it does provide relief.  I look forward to using my LifePro every night after work. I haven't found a cure for my pain and problems but I am sleeping better. I feel as though I've had a mini-massage in the comfort of my home each evening. That alone is worth the investment in the LifePro Waver.

image with text LifePro Waver Whole Body Vibration

Important:  I am not giving medical advice. Even if I wanted to, I wouldn't. I am not able to figure out my own health so I would not try to advise you about yours. Please do your own research about the claims made related to health and whole body vibration.

I kept seeing ads for various types of  whole body vibration machines. They all make claims about helping lymphatic drainage, improving bone density and muscle strength. They make claims about reducing inflammation and body fat. I found it extremely hard to believe these claims. But I was intrigued by the claim of improving balance.

Over the decades, I have seen physical therapists help children with balance problems. Sometimes that includes standing on things that are soft or things that move. Somehow, that helps the children's bodies strengthen and learn to balance. I have become very concerned about my balance difficulties after recently falling and smashing my head on the arm of the sofa. When I saw that the LifePro Waver Vibration Plate moves up and down, alternating side-to-side, I decided to give this vibration plate a try.

LifePro Waver Vibration Plate information

  • Motor Type: Oscillation
  • Hz & Amplitude: 4hz - 12hz and 0 - 10 mm
  • Measurements and weight: 30.5" x 15.3" x 5.8" and 31 lbs
  • Claims: Lymphatic Drainage, Decrease Aches & Pains, Balance Training
  • Weight Limit: 330 lbs
  • Includes: resistance bands, power cord, remote control, waver vibration plate, LifePro mini bands
  • Current ratings on Amazon: 26,000+ reviews totaling 4.6 out of 5 stars

The premise is that you sit or stand on the machine and run it for 15 minutes (or more).  You can change the vibration from very light to harder and the remote control makes this easy when you are standing on the machine.

I have read studies that reportedly prove some health benefits. I did not take the time to delve into the studies to look at the reliability of the study and/or whether the research was done by a neutral party. I do know that I have felt decreased stiffness and increased range of motion after 15 minutes of vibration.  I look forward to sitting or standing on the LifePro and I sleep better after those 15 minutes. I can't say whether or not my balance has improved but I am very aware that my balance hasn't worsened.

I have an undiagnosed health problem that runs in my family that includes joint pain, balance problems, muscle weakness, muscle spasms, neuropathy, and proprioception problems. I am always looking for relief. Despite my skepticism about the claims made about this machine, it has been a very good investment.  I seems counter-intuitive to me that vibration would help relieve neuropathy. But it does. Just sleeping better at night is a pretty big deal and makes this machine worth it to me. One final thought. I don't think I would recommend a vibration plate that doesn't oscillate. I don't know how, but I think that oscillating movement is important.

Premier Protein Drink Review

Do you consume enough protein in your diet? I know that I don't get enough throughout the day. I use Premier Protein Drink as a supplement.

Premier Protein Drink Review

How Much Protein Should You Have Per Day?

The amount of protein depends on your activity and body weight.

Below is what I found from the Mayo Clinic Health System

If you're an average adult.
The recommended dietary allowance to prevent deficiency for an average sedentary adult is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. For example, a person who weighs 165 pounds, or 75 kilograms, should consume 60 grams of protein per day.

The Healthiest Protein Options Include:

  • Egg Whites
  • Fish and seafood
  • Lean meats (skinless, white-meat chicken or turkey)
  • Low-fat dairy
  • Soy, nuts, seeds, beans, and lentils
According to the Mayo Clinic Health System, you should always try to meet your daily requirements with these whole foods instead of supplements.

After checking with my doctor and getting his okay to use a protein supplement, we found Premier Protein Drink at our local grocery store.

Premier Protein drinks come in a variety of flavors like Chocolate, Vanilla, Caramel, Cookies & Cream, and other limited edition flavors. Each bottle is compact, easy to carry, and requires no refrigeration until it is opened.

Here are the Nutritional Stats:

  • 30g of protein per serving
  • Only 160 calories
  • Just 1g of sugar
  • Low fat
  • Includes 24 vitamins and minerals
I don't use these to replace a meal, I drink 3 or 4 per week after a light lunch.

If you want to use a protein supplement, the Mayo Clinic recommends:

  • 2 grams or less of saturated fat
  • 5 grams of sugar or less
  • 200 or fewer calories
  • No trans fat or partially hydrogenated oils
The Premier Protein Drinks checks all of the above boxes.

Unlike other protein drinks that can taste chalky or artificial, I like the smooth and creamy taste of Premier Protein. I have tried several different flavors, but I always go back to my favorite, chocolate.

Always check with your doctor before using a protein supplement to ensure it's right for you.

8 Minutes in the Morning, Book Review

dumbbell

8 Minutes in the Morning is a book about diet and weight training exercise. This isn't the first time that I have worked through this book, however, it is one that I have come back to multiple times.

8 Minutes in the Morning is by Jorge Cruise, who experienced his own health issues as well as watching his family members experience similar types of issues. He became inspired to make a change and he shares what he has learned, along with stories of the benefits that others have experienced using his methods.

The first part of the book talks about food choices, i.e. giving up the sugary stuff and or replacing it with less sugary stuff, and choosing healthy fats instead to help people feel more satiated. He provides food charts in the back part of the book along with recommendations on whether it is a limited food item or one that is unlimited - referring to how much one can have of said item, in a day.

He also provides a simple eating log that you can copy, and fill out for each day to help keep you on track.

Then he gets to the greater core of the book, at least in my opinion. That's the exercise part. There are two weight training exercises recommended, for six out of the seven days in a week. You get a day off. The key with this weight loss program is to build muscle; and in turn, muscle burns more fat. As one tones up, they will automatically burn more fat.

It's not just about the exercise though. The healthy fats are a key ingredient in building muscle, as well as doing the exercises. This approach counts on both parts.

The very first time that I used this book, I lost more pounds than I have since other times that I have done refreshers. I attribute that to my diet needing a lot more correction the first time around. However, although I haven't really loss much weight this time, my clothes are fitting better again.

Having just worked through this book again, which covers a four week period, I note that I am stronger now than at other times. I am able to do all of the exercises as shown, instead of subbing selected ones with some other exercise in it's place. I have also noticed that the heavier duty gardening work has become easier.

I have done dumbbell exercises with videos from time to time, but I didn't stick with that as much. I like that this method is more structured; just two exercise routines for each day, 6 days out of the week. I like that different muscle groups are done on different days, giving the recently exercised muscles time to recover and you work on a different focused muscle area the next day.

I haven't followed along with all of Cruise's recommendations, but have utilized most of them, and am glad that I did.

If you want to try a different way to loose weight and to tone up, I do recommend 8 Minutes in the morning. Some of the routines might take a little longer than 8 minutes, especially if it is your first time doing any of them, but I have found that it became easier and quicker over time. As with any new physical venture, check in with your body and adjust to any limits you may have.

Reviewing Benefits And Features Of Talking Clocks

.Black and white colour contrast talking clock

Since my husband was diagnosed as severe sight impaired -blind, we have been exploring technology and devices that may help him. One of these we were advised to look into is a talking clock.

This simple device is designed to audibly announce the time, and the date. For the model we have you simply press the top once for the time and keep it held down for the date to be announced as well.

It is of course very useful for anyone who has sight loss. However we have found it is also useful for me when I quickly want to know the time and date and through learning more about them I realised they can be very beneficial for many other people as well.

In this article we will be using the terms severe sight impaired, blind, low vision, partially sighted and sight loss as these are the current acceptable terms in my country for people with sight loss. This may change over time and be different in different countries. No offence is intended by any of these terms.

Empowering People With Sight Loss

For people who experience sight loss whether they are severe sight impaired or have low vision, checking the time can be a significant challenge and not being able to tell the time by yourself can be a real curb on independence.

Prior to getting the talking clock my husband had to ask me the time whenever he wanted to know. This immediately made him feel less independent and for me it was not always convenient. For my husband it was a constant reminder of his sight loss that he had to ask a sighted person whenever he needed or wanted to know the time.

Traditional clocks rely on us being able to read the numbers or roman numerals often at a distance. Some are very difficult to see if they have patterns or pictures and different colours. People with any degree of sight loss will have different needs and preferences.

My husband needs very clear bold black numbers on a white background with zero distractions and it needs to be very large. The clock would also need to be free from sunlight or glare hitting it, yet bright enough so he can make out the numbers. This is not always possible and we quickly realised it would be difficult to site such a large clock and give it the correct site to make it possible for him to read it.

The talking clock eliminates this barrier completely by providing a clear, spoken announcement of the time with the press of a button or depending on the clock also the date or even via scheduled verbal alerts.

A talking clock can really help towards independence, allowing people with sight loss of varying degrees  to manage their daily routines without needing assistance from a sighted person.

You can choose a basic talking clock that can help you by simply telling the time and knowing the correct date, or more advanced models. Either way a talking clock gives a much higher level of independence.

Some talking clocks do not have any readable indicators while others may have a digital reading of date, time etc in large text. It all depends on what you personally need and find useful.

The advanced models can do many tasks and have different features. I have listed some features here to give you an idea of what can be available.

  • Tell the time
  • Tell the date.
  • Set alarms
  • Organise appointment and social dates
  • Birthday and special day reminders
  • Chime on the hour
  • Reminders to take medication
  • Different levels of brightness on the display
  • Customisable themes.
  • Customisable language
  • Lighting differentiates time zones during the day/night
  • Temperature readouts
  • Activated by voice controlled commands.
  • Some with no visual display, others with large size and contrasting visual displays

Who Else Could Benefit From A Talking Clock?

Clearly a talking clock can assist people with a visual impairment. However it does not stop there.

It got me thinking who else may benefit from a talking clock and I believe it may help older people who might have difficulty reading clock faces from a distance, perhaps even young children who need to know the time and have not yet reliably learned to read a clock face or digital clocks.

They would be a useful aid for people who cannot learn to tell the time on a clock, or for people who through various illnesses, learning difficulties, disabilities, who have memory issues, or dementia find reading a standard clock more challenging.

Additionally, talking clocks might benefit elderly people who may struggle with small text on standard clocks, and the advanced models might assist professionals who need to keep track of their schedule.

Talking clocks simplify timekeeping, and if technology is for anything surely it should be to make our lives a little easier.

Talking Clocks Are Convenient

Clearly talking clocks are a useful aid for a person with sight loss. However as we have found they can also be really beneficial to those with out sight loss. We now have several talking clocks around the house in places we regularly walk past and I now find my self using the talking clock much more than the sighted clock!

It is very unobtrusive, ours is a simple black and white device  certainly small enough to carry and light. It manages to both blend into the decor and yet be noticeable enough so my husband knows where it is.

Other clocks may have different colours such as blue, red or yellow and be smaller or larger. Many can be placed on a surface and some can be wall mounted. It all depends on what the person prefers.

I especially use it for knowing the date especially if I don't have the computer or TV on. I often don't have the right glasses on to see our wall clocks and it is so convenient to punch the talking clock as I walk past and get the time and date so easily.

You can buy talking clocks that are very simple and so easy to use with just the time and date or you can get advanced ones with a multitude of features and tasks.

It has become a normal way to tell the time in our house. We didn't plan it this way but it does make my husband feel better that we just use his talking clock as a normal device, rather than just his special device to tell the time.

Aspects Of Talking Clocks To Be Aware About.

While I think generally they are a huge benefit, there are a few things to be aware of.

Talking clocks can be run on batteries or plugged into electricity points, both have their good and bad points. We have the ones run on batteries and felt these were more portable, so that they can be taken into different rooms and taken with us on holiday. Clearly we need to make sure we always have a stock of replacement batteries either single use or ideally rechargeable.

If we had an electric model it could be plugged in around the house without the need or worry to keep a stock of batteries handy.  However, there is always the risk that in the event of a power cut or power outage it of course would not work. It is important if buying an electrical one to ensure that the features and time automatically reset after a power cut or outage is over.

The solution is probably to have one of each, some of the electric models seem to carry more features, yet the battery ones are simpler, easy to use and more portable.

By the very fact the talking clock is a fairly loud announcement of the time, it is impossible to privately check the time! So for example if you just wanted to check the time to see if guests ought to be leaving or a meeting has gone on too long, it is really a public announcement. They are not ideal in situations where discretion is required!

A talking clock can take a little time to get used to. At first my husband did keep asking me the time and I reminded him to use the talking clock, after a few days or weeks it is just a normal habit.

The fact it is an audible time check can be disturbing if there are others in the house having quiet time or sleeping.

It may be more disruptive if there are several people in the house, who may not want to know the time in this way and might find it disturbing.

While it is loud enough, if the environment was noisy or lots of people were talking or music playing it might be more difficult to clearly hear it.

You need to choose the clock voice that works best for you. It all depends on the model if you can customise the voice and some of the voices might not suit you. Some voices are clearer and more calm than others. So it is worth checking which voice the model uses and if you are able to customise it.

We both feel the positives far outweigh any negatives and now would not be without it. We agreed at the outset of my husbands diagnosis of severe sight impaired that we would do everything possible to maintain his personal autonomy and independence. This little device of a talking clock has certainly been very helpful in this respect.

Advancements in Talking Clock Technology

Our talking clocks are models that tell the time and date and can be used to set an alarm. At the present we are happy with these features but there are models that can do much more.

There are a range of talking clocks now from the basic time and date clock to ones which integrate with smart devices and use Artificial Intelligence.

Some have customised features or a choice of features and languages. As mentioned previously there are talking clocks which also set date reminders, medicine reminders and alarms.

Of course there are also talking watches which is on our wish list for something else to help my husband.

Technology is advancing and if it can assist in keeping people more independent for as long as possible that is a positive.

I think a talking clock would make a very thoughtful gift for anyone who is finding it difficult to see or read a standard clock.

It might seem a small thing, many of us take for granted until we cannot do it,  but being able to tell the time and date by yourself is a huge deal for self esteem and independence.

As the talking clock technology evolves I think it will become increasingly useful and versatile, not only for people who are sight impaired, but for many people.

This Back Massager With Heat Makes a Fantastic Gift

The self-heating mug I reviewed recently isn’t the only thoughtful gift my husband got me for my birthday last month. He also gave me a wonderful shiatsu-style electric back massager with heat to help with my chronic stiff neck and back pain. It really helps work out the knots in minutes!

I haven't stopped using this heated back massager since I received it, so I am anxious to share my product review with others who might benefit from it or who might want to give one as a gift.

Boriwat Back Massager With Heat

The Boriwat Back Massager with Heat

The Boriwat Back Massager with Heat is a versatile, affordable aid designed to deliver relief from muscle tension, pain, and stress. Combining deep-tissue shiatsu-like kneading with soothing heat and customizable settings, this massager offers a convenient solution for anyone seeking relaxation at home, at work, or on the go. I love that it can be used to massage not only my upper and lower back (depending on which way I orient it) but also my neck, where I also carry a lot of tension, by lying down on it.

Boriwat back massager with heat
I use my back massager with heat in bed, at my desk, in my living room, and in the car. I can lay against it or on top of it, depending on the position that best suits my needs.

Key Features & Specifications

  • Dual Heating Zones and Heat Levels: This device features two built-in heating zones for warmth on both the back and the neck (the two places I carry my stress). It also offers two adjustable heat levels, low (104°F) and high (113°F), to help loosen tight muscles and improve blood circulation.
  • Heat Can Be Turned Off: While I love the heat for soothing sore muscles and knots, it's nice that it can be turned off during warmer weather.
  • 3D Shiatsu Massage Nodes: Four rotating, bi-directional massage nodes mimic the sensation of a real massage therapist’s hands, delivering a deep-kneading experience that targets tight or sore areas.

Helpful tip: The nodes are quite firm, and if my muscles are really tight and sore, I sometimes put a sheet of 1/2-inch open cell upholstery foam (I bought mine at a fabric store) in between my back or neck and the massager.
  • Adjustable Intensity: With three levels of intensity (low, medium, and high), you can tailor the massage to match your individual comfort and pain relief needs.
  • Ergonomic Design: Larger than most standard massage pillows, this massager measures approximately 15" x 13", providing better coverage and a more ergonomic fit for the back, neck, shoulders, and even thighs.
  • Remote Control Operation: A simple wired remote lets you switch the heat and massage settings easily just by pressing each button repeatedly to rotate through the settings without having to reposition the massager.
  • Safety Features: It includes a 15-minute auto shut-off timer.
  • Portable and Travel-Friendly: Comes with both an AC wall adapter and a car adapter, making it ideal for use while commuting or traveling.

The remote control is simple and intuitive

Pros

  • Effective Pain Relief: I have found that this heated massager provides significant relief from chronic back and neck pain thanks to the combination of strong kneading pressure and heat therapy.
  • Multi-Purpose: Its shape and flexibility make it suitable not just for the back, but also for the neck, shoulders, thighs, and calves.
  • Easy to Use: The intuitive controls and included adapters make it easy to use and incorporate into a daily routine, if desired.
  • Affordable: Compared to other massage devices with similar features, the Boriwat massager is competitively priced. At the time of this review's publication, it was on a terrific limited-time deal that brought the price down from $89.99 to just $39.99 — a 56% savings! A fantastic time to buy one.

Cons

  • Potential Longevity Issues: As with many electronic devices, there are occasional reports of the unit wearing out or malfunctioning after several months of frequent use. I have not owned mine long enough yet to comment on its longevity, but the many 5-star reviews suggest that this is not a common issue.

Makes a Great Gift

The Boriwat Back Massager with Heat can be a worthwhile addition to your wellness routine, whether you're dealing with tension after a long day or managing chronic discomfort. It's an excellent value for the price and provides effective relief for sore, tight muscles. It is easy to use, and can be taken almost anywhere, thanks to its included car travel adapter that fits into your car's cigarette lighter socket. It would make a much appreciated gift for anyone looking to relax and relieve pain from the comfort of their home or while traveling. If you can grab one for just $39.99 during the limited-time deal, you'll be getting a terrific bargain!

Reviewing Comvita Propolis Extract

Propolis Extract Review
Comvita Propolis Extract

I'm been using Comvita Propolis Extract for over 30 years now, let me tell you how and why I use it.

I first came across Comvita propolis products when I was living in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand (Comvita's home was about 45 minutes away from my home). I managed one of the largest health stores in New Zealand for approximately 10 years and as well as Comvita being a great brand (they now are a certified B Corporation which is hardly surprising as they have worked in harmony with nature since they began in the mid 1970s) they were also local so, of course we supported them.

Their most popular products back then were their propolis lozenges, which we had in bulk bins and had problems keeping stocked up especially in winter, and their mauka honey which is what they received international recognition for. My favourite product, however, was their propolis extract.

Propolis is what the bees use to protect the hive and keep it healthy as it helps to resist bacteria and I remember being in a training seminar and having someone tell us how amazing it was for sore throats.

What I was told to do was to put 2-3 drops of propolis extract into a little warm water, swirl it around and then gargle and swallow. The use of the warm water and the gargling were to help with the sore throat and the swallowing helped to make sure it didn't develop into anything worse.

I brought some and tried it out and it worked! I continued to use it up until a couple of years ago when I ran out and for some reason I didn't get anymore (pre-Covid I had stocked up when I went to New Zealand, but I hadn't been back since 2019). I decided to look online last month with a view to buying some online and found a local pharmacy stocked it so now I'm just waiting for a sore throat!

Why Does Propolis Work on Sore Throats?

Although propolis can be used for a lot more than just sore throats, this is the traditional use for it. It works because:

  • Propolis is antibacterial and antiviral so will help to fight infections (a very good reason for swallowing!).
  • Propolis is anti-inflammatory - it reduces swelling and this is also why it was recommended to use warm (NOT hot water) as it was supposed to also help with the inflammation.
  • Propolis has a slight anesthetic property which is probably why it's recommended to gargle with it in order to numb the irritation slightly.
You can use it twice a day for sore throats, but I've never used it more than once a day - I actually have never needed to as it's always worked the first time.

What Else Can Propolis Do?

When I brought my recent bottle of propolis extract here in Australia, the packaging was slightly different and there was no mention of sore throats instead it only mentioned mouth ulcers, general well being and topical use. This sent me to look at what it's recommended for elsewhere around the globe.

Note: Personally I have only taken this for sore throats and I believe it has kept some colds and flus away as well.

Oral Health - apparently it's very good at fighting the bacteria that causes plaque, gingivitis and bad breath. As I mentioned in Australia it's recommended for mouth ulcers.  For these things it's recommended to use as a mouth wash.

Immune Support - As it also contains flavonoids and phenolic acids that stimulate the immune system it's believed to reduce the duration and severity of colds and flue. Some people also use it preventatively, especially during seasonal changes. In this case it is recommended to use 1/2 tsp in 30 ml warm water once a day.

Wound Healing - topically it is supposed to promote skin regeneration and reduce the risk of infection and is recommended on minor cuts, burns and cold sores. In this case they recommend apply 1/2 tsp to the dressing and cover the wound.

I have also seen that there has been some early research to suggest it may protect the gut lining and help with digestive health. There is also some talk about it helping to reduce oxidative stress and mentions it being very useful for people with inflammatory conditions.

A Consideration

If you are allergic to bees, pollen or honey then propolis could cause an allergic reaction. I personally would not recommend trying it in this instance as there are other products you could try which wouldn't put you at risk of a reaction.

Have you heard of propolis extract? Is it something you'd think of keeping on hand? Once I open a bottle of the extract I actually keep mind in the box (so that it's dark) and in the fridge (as it should be stored below 30 C which isn't always possible in my house!). It lasts for a few years and in my opinion is a great investment.

A Review of a Simple Fix for a Better Sleep with Acid Reflux

A Simple Fix for Better Sleep with Acid Reflux

Let's be honest—finding a useful and meaningful gift isn't always easy. Last year, for my friend's birthday, I knew exactly what she needed: a wedge pillow.

She still raves about this handy bedtime item, so it's legitimately earned a positive review!

She's been dealing with acid reflux for a long time, especially at night. I've heard her struggles with stacking pillows to sleep more upright, only to have them slide around or fall over in the middle of the night.

It seemed uncomfortable and frustrating.

So I decided to get her something that could make a real difference—something she probably wouldn't have bought for herself, but that I knew she'd appreciate every night.

No More Stacking Pillows With a Wedge Pillow

I chose the 7.5-inch wedge pillow (there's also a taller 12-inch version, but I figured a more moderate incline would be easier to get used to). It's about 24 x 24 inches in size, which is a nice, generous surface—plenty wide to comfortably rest your upper body.

The point is that it gives her the incline she needs without the hassle of arranging multiple pillows that slip and slide. It stays put and gives her consistent support all night.

A Stylish Touch (Yes, Even for a Wedge Pillow)

One of the things I liked about this pillow was that it doesn't look like something out of a hospital room. It looks nice, but there is nothing clinical about it.

The cover is made of soft jacquard material, which not only feels good but also gives it a more stylish look. The cover is also removable and washable, so my friend can keep it clean without much effort.

Not Just for Acid Reflux

While I bought this wedge pillow to help with her acid reflux, it turns out it's also useful for many other things.

Whether it's snoring, back pain, neck strain, or even recovery after surgery, this pillow helps by gently elevating your upper body and removing some pressure.

You can also flip it around and use it to elevate your legs or feet if you need to. I didn't even think about that when I bought it, but it's a nice bonus feature.

She Sleeps Better—And That Makes Me Happy

The best part? My friend actually thanked me several times for this pillow. She said it made her nights so much more comfortable and gave her the kind of support she didn't realize she was missing.

Honestly, I feel good knowing I gave her something that makes a difference in her everyday life. That's what a good gift should do, right?

Would I Recommend It? Absolutely.

If you or someone you care about deals with acid reflux, snoring, back pain, or just has trouble getting comfy in bed, this wedge pillow is totally worth checking out. It's one of those little things that can make a big difference.

Sometimes, the best gifts aren't flashy—they're just thoughtful and helpful

You can find this wedge pillow on Amazon, where it is Available.
