A Review Of Stick On Heat Pads And Electric Heat Pads

Red and blue sky background

I suffer from back pain some times, ever since my 30's and one of the things that helps me is heat on my back. This was of course approved by a doctor amongst other treatments.

I am not a Healthcare professional and if you suffer from any sort of pain it is advised to get it checked out by a healthcare professional first.

However, if Heat is medically approved, it is one of the easiest and comforting ways to ease aches, stiffness, and tension.

Over the years I’ve tried several different types of heat pads, and I like two in particular for different reasons. One is adhesive heat pads and the other is a reusable electric heat pad. They each have their own advantages and disadvantages to consider.

Stick On Heat Pads

Stick on heat pads are single use adhesive patches that warm up gradually once exposed to air. The ones I buy can be useful for 8, 12 or even 24 hours. They vary in size but if I have back pain I try to get the larger sizes. I only ever wear them in the daytime, never at night as personally I would be concerned about safety and comfort.

They are slim and lightweight so they can be worn over underwear and under normal clothing. You need to stick them on to a piece of clothing, never on to bare skin, the adhesive is quite strong.

I find they don't restrict me, although I am aware of them and they do give a nice gentle heat. They are very good for the days I need to be out and about shopping or gardening or errands for example, but still need a heat source on my back for comfort.

Adhesive heat pads

Advantages Of Stick  On Heat Pads

  • The warmth is gentle and lasts for however many hours. It says on the packet how long you can expect it to last which is generally 8,12 or 24 hours and they are simple to use. You simply peel way the strips on the back and stick on to clothing, never bare skin. Within a minute or two you can feel the warmth.
  • They’re discreet and easy to wear over underwear and under normal clothing and ideal for days when I need to be active. I often wear one when I am gardening as it helps keep the muscles warm and is lovely on cold days!
  • Another use for them is if you have to be out and about on a freezing cold day they can be a helpful to keep you a little warmer.
  • I imagine if you need to be out watching sports in cold weather they could also give you enough added warmth to be a bit more comfortable.
  • I keep a pack in the car, just in case we break down and need extra heat. My husband has serious health conditions that mean he gets cold very quickly, which can be unsafe for him, so warm blankets and adhesive heat pads in the car make him feel safer. We of course checked with his Doctor first that this was suitable for him.

Disadvantages

  • They are single use, which isn't great for the environment and if you need to use daily or often it can become very expensive to keep buying them.
  • The heat they give is not a deep heat but is a comforting warmth, so if you need a deeper, more intense heat they might not be enough.
  • If you are unlucky enough to have pain on a hot day, having a heat pad on your back might be more uncomfortable in hot weather.
  • You need to ensure they are stuck on firmly, this is not usually an issue as the adhesive is usually quite strong, but i prefer to have a belt and braces approach and like to wear them over underwear and under jeans or trousers rather than just over underwear, just in case they drop off causing an embarrassing situation!

Electric Heat Pads

Electric heat pads are usually a large or decent sized heat pad which plug into the wall via a long lead.

They usually allow you to adjust the time they are on for and the intensity of heat for very mild to quite hot.

You can't move around with these electric heat pads and so are better to use when resting, working at a computer or doing desk paperwork, sitting or lying down or watching TV. Below is a close up of the heat pads on my machine.

I always use mine when I am wearing clothing, never on bare skin for safety and comfort reasons.

Never use an electric heat pad when sleeping for safety reasons.

Electric Heat Pads close up

Advantages Of Electric Heat Pads

  • You buy one and they can be used many  times so if you use heat a lot they can be cost effective.
  • I like the ease of setting different temperatures and times and that it is so adaptable to what i need at any given time or day. Mine uses a simple Heat plus and Heat minus and Time Plus and Time Minus, so it is very simple to operate.
  • They heat up quickly, which is especially good when my back is stiff especially after gardening.
  • They can be set to considerably warmer than adhesive heat pads, which can be useful if you need a higher heat.
  • On my model once you set the time, it will cut out after that time period which is a useful safety feature and a feature to look for if you are buying one.
  • They are usually significantly larger than the adhesive heat pads and so are very good for the back, hips, shoulders or legs, warming up a much bigger area which is often very helpful.

Disadvantages
  • You are tethered to where there is a plug point and cannot move around. So you need to use only when resting. I don't generally find this a problem especially if I need some heat to help my achy muscles after doing garden work.
  • There is usually a much bigger financial cost up front, though cost per use goes down if you use it a lot.
  • Check where the connections are that link the pad to the lead as on some models they are in uncomfortable positions.
  • It must cool down completely before storing away which can take some time and be a bit awkward if you need to keep it stored away when not using.
  • You will need to make sure you have a place to store it and use it away from children and pets.

Electric heat pad Control

Alerts and Warnings

With electric heat pads it is strongly advised to keep away from children and pets. Clearly electricity is involved and higher heat levels are possible.

Also obviously keep electric heat pads away from water or any liquids.

Store electric heat pads flat and allow to cool down completely  before putting away.

Routinely check wires and connections and the general condition of the electric heat pad for safety purposes.

Store both adhesive heat pads and electric heat pads out of reach of children and pets. Even with the stick on heat pads they do get warm and its advisable to keep away from children and pets as because they use a strong adhesion if they were to get stuck on to a delicate body or face area or pet fur for example it could be unpleasant and unsafe. So store them out of reach of children and pets.

How I Use The Different Types Of Heat Pads

I like using both types so if I have any back pain I tend to use the adhesive heat pads on busy days out of the home when I need to do shopping, errands, walk in the freezing cold, gardening, appointments and days out and to keep in the car.

I use the electric heat pad when I can sit down and relax so if i read or watch TV or chatting, or even when doing paperwork, computer work or life admin. I have the electric heat pad on my back right now.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages but I feel if you are medically safe to use heat and it is medically advised for you and your condition and it helps you, to have both is a useful choice.

This Back Massager With Heat Makes a Fantastic Gift

The self-heating mug I reviewed recently isn’t the only thoughtful gift my husband got me for my birthday last month. He also gave me a wonderful shiatsu-style electric back massager with heat to help with my chronic stiff neck and back pain. It really helps work out the knots in minutes!

I haven't stopped using this heated back massager since I received it, so I am anxious to share my product review with others who might benefit from it or who might want to give one as a gift.

Boriwat Back Massager With Heat

The Boriwat Back Massager with Heat

The Boriwat Back Massager with Heat is a versatile, affordable aid designed to deliver relief from muscle tension, pain, and stress. Combining deep-tissue shiatsu-like kneading with soothing heat and customizable settings, this massager offers a convenient solution for anyone seeking relaxation at home, at work, or on the go. I love that it can be used to massage not only my upper and lower back (depending on which way I orient it) but also my neck, where I also carry a lot of tension, by lying down on it.

Boriwat back massager with heat
I use my back massager with heat in bed, at my desk, in my living room, and in the car. I can lay against it or on top of it, depending on the position that best suits my needs.

Key Features & Specifications

  • Dual Heating Zones and Heat Levels: This device features two built-in heating zones for warmth on both the back and the neck (the two places I carry my stress). It also offers two adjustable heat levels, low (104°F) and high (113°F), to help loosen tight muscles and improve blood circulation.
  • Heat Can Be Turned Off: While I love the heat for soothing sore muscles and knots, it's nice that it can be turned off during warmer weather.
  • 3D Shiatsu Massage Nodes: Four rotating, bi-directional massage nodes mimic the sensation of a real massage therapist’s hands, delivering a deep-kneading experience that targets tight or sore areas.

Helpful tip: The nodes are quite firm, and if my muscles are really tight and sore, I sometimes put a sheet of 1/2-inch open cell upholstery foam (I bought mine at a fabric store) in between my back or neck and the massager.
  • Adjustable Intensity: With three levels of intensity (low, medium, and high), you can tailor the massage to match your individual comfort and pain relief needs.
  • Ergonomic Design: Larger than most standard massage pillows, this massager measures approximately 15" x 13", providing better coverage and a more ergonomic fit for the back, neck, shoulders, and even thighs.
  • Remote Control Operation: A simple wired remote lets you switch the heat and massage settings easily just by pressing each button repeatedly to rotate through the settings without having to reposition the massager.
  • Safety Features: It includes a 15-minute auto shut-off timer.
  • Portable and Travel-Friendly: Comes with both an AC wall adapter and a car adapter, making it ideal for use while commuting or traveling.

The remote control is simple and intuitive

Pros

  • Effective Pain Relief: I have found that this heated massager provides significant relief from chronic back and neck pain thanks to the combination of strong kneading pressure and heat therapy.
  • Multi-Purpose: Its shape and flexibility make it suitable not just for the back, but also for the neck, shoulders, thighs, and calves.
  • Easy to Use: The intuitive controls and included adapters make it easy to use and incorporate into a daily routine, if desired.
  • Affordable: Compared to other massage devices with similar features, the Boriwat massager is competitively priced. At the time of this review's publication, it was on a terrific limited-time deal that brought the price down from $89.99 to just $39.99 — a 56% savings! A fantastic time to buy one.

Cons

  • Potential Longevity Issues: As with many electronic devices, there are occasional reports of the unit wearing out or malfunctioning after several months of frequent use. I have not owned mine long enough yet to comment on its longevity, but the many 5-star reviews suggest that this is not a common issue.

Makes a Great Gift

The Boriwat Back Massager with Heat can be a worthwhile addition to your wellness routine, whether you're dealing with tension after a long day or managing chronic discomfort. It's an excellent value for the price and provides effective relief for sore, tight muscles. It is easy to use, and can be taken almost anywhere, thanks to its included car travel adapter that fits into your car's cigarette lighter socket. It would make a much appreciated gift for anyone looking to relax and relieve pain from the comfort of their home or while traveling. If you can grab one for just $39.99 during the limited-time deal, you'll be getting a terrific bargain!

The Most Affordable OTC Lidocaine Pain Relief Patches

If you’re looking for a strong, over-the-counter pain relief patch, 4% lidocaine plus 1% menthol pain relief gel-patches offer a powerful combination of numbing and cooling effects to help ease discomfort. With the FDA-approved maximum strength of lidocaine available without a prescription, plus the added benefit of menthol, these patches can be a great option when you’re dealing with muscle aches, joint pain, or general soreness. Here is my review of the affordable Sumifun Lidocaine +Menthol Pain Relief Gel-Patches I have been using to help me with a painful upper back muscle spasm.

The Most Affordable OTC Lidocaine Pain Relief Patches

Recently I developed a painful muscle spasm in my upper back that seems to have pinched a nerve. (I suspect it was caused by my propensity to spend too much of each day looking down at a mobile phone or laptop screen.)

A few years ago, when my husband had an even more severe muscle spasm that caused a pinched nerve, he was prescribed not only oral painkillers but also 5% lidocaine patches that helped him enormously. Subsequently, when he developed a less severe muscle spasm in his back, we decided to give 4% lidocaine patches from the pharmacy a try, since 5% lidocaine patches are only available by prescription. After buying a box of the popular but expensive Salonpas 4% lidocaine pain relieving gel-patch from the local pharmacy and realizing that he would need to use the patches for an extended period of time, my husband bought a less expensive 4% lidocaine roll-on product, but it wore off faster and was smellier than the gel-patches.

So, when my recent back spasm began, I decided to try a more affordable brand of gel-patch and opted for the over-the-counter (OTC) maximum-strength lidocaine plus menthol version.

Overview

Sumifun 4% Lidocaine + 1% Menthol Pain Relief Gel-Patch is a maximum-strength over-the-counter pain relief patch designed to alleviate a variety of aches and pains, including backaches, stiff necks, joint pain, and muscle soreness. Combining 4% lidocaine, a potent local anesthetic, with 1% menthol, a counterirritant that provides a cooling and warming sensation, these patches promise fast-acting, long-lasting relief for up to 8 hours. Available in various pack sizes, they are also FSA/HSA eligible, adding to their appeal for convenient topical pain relief without a prescription.

Packaging and Presentation

The Sumifun patches are individually wrapped, ensuring convenience, cleanliness and portability. Each patch measures approximately 3.9” x 5.5” (similar in size to most other large OTC lidocaine patches). Instructions are printed not only on the box, but also on the wrapper of each lidocaine pain relief patch.

The patches have a soft, stretchy fabric exterior and a sticky adhesive side infused with the active ingredients. The menthol gives them a subtle scent.

Application

Applying the patch is straightforward: Remove the patch from the individual packaging, partially peel back the protective backing film, position the patch over the affected area and press to adhere, then remove the remaining backing film as you press and firmly smooth down the patch against the skin. If you have back pain, you probably will need someone to apply the patch for you.

I have found that, if adhered smoothly and firmly, paying special attention to the edges, the patches  stay in place on my upper back for about 5-8 hours during light activity (sitting, standing, walking). However, some customers report that the edges may begin to lift slightly after sweating or bending, especially when the patch is applied to more mobile areas like knees or lower legs. You might need to use tape to help keep it in place securely in those situations.

The patch feels lightweight and flexible, molding to the skin without feeling bulky. However, it’s thinner than the prescription-grade patches we’ve used, which makes it a bit trickier to apply without it folding onto itself. Once properly applied, however, it’s discreet under clothing and there’s no greasy residue like with lidocaine creams or lotions.

Effectiveness

The combination of 4% lidocaine and 1% menthol is the star of this product. Lidocaine, at 4%, is the highest OTC strength available, working by numbing nerve signals to dull pain. Menthol complements this by creating a cooling sensation followed by subtle warmth, which can distract from discomfort and soothe the area.

The patches feel extremely cold upon application. The cooling effect from the menthol provides some comfort within about 15–20 minutes. The lidocaine kicks in shortly after, reducing the sharp ache to a more manageable level. For moderate pain, like my tech use-induced back muscle spasm, it has worked well, taking the edge off enough to improve mobility and focus. However, it hasn’t completely eliminated deeper soreness, and the relief is mostly gone after about 6 hours.

These lidocaine patches with menthol are especially helpful for backaches or joint stiffness. They would not be adequate to help with more severe or chronic pain, like neuropathy or post-surgical discomfort. Compared to prescription 5% lidocaine patches my husband has used previously, these over-the-counter 4% lidocaine patches are slightly less potent, but they’re a solid alternative for less severe pain.

The product claims up to 8 hours of relief per patch, with a recommendation to leave it on for no longer than 8 hours. In my experience, the pain relief peaks around hours 2–4 and then gradually declines. By hour 6, the numbing effect is faint. However, when applied an hour before bedtime, these patches have helped me fall asleep and stay asleep, which has been a blessing.

Key Features

  • Maximum OTC Strength: Contains 4% lidocaine, the highest strength available over the counter, to provide numbing relief for pain.
  • Enhanced with 1% Menthol: Provides an instant cooling sensation that helps soothe discomfort while the lidocaine takes effect.
  • Fast-Acting & Long-Lasting: Works quickly and delivers pain relief for up to 8 hours.
  • Flexible & Comfortable: Designed to be thin and stretchable to conform to different body areas without restricting movement.
  • Non-Greasy & Mess-Free: Unlike creams or gels, these patches adhere to the skin without leaving a sticky residue.

Benefits

  • Great for localized pain relief: Ideal for back pain, arthritis, and muscle soreness.
  • Easy to use: Just peel and apply; no need for rubbing or massaging like creams.
  • Affordable compared to prescription options: Provides effective relief without the need for a doctor’s visit.
  • Dual action relief: The lidocaine-menthol combo offers both numbing and soothing sensations, making it versatile for various pain types.
  • OK to use even on sensitive skin: I have had to have these patches applied and removed twice a day for the past five days so far, and even though I have fairly delicate skin, the affected area where the patches are being applied and removed repeatedly is slightly pink but not irritated.
  • Affordable: At roughly $1-$1.50 per patch (depending on pack size), it’s a cost-effective OTC option compared to prescription alternatives or better known brands like Salonpas.
  • Discreet and Mess-Free: No greasy residue or strong smell, ideal for daytime use.
  • FSA/HSA Eligible: A bonus for those leveraging tax-advantaged accounts.

Considerations

  • May not stick well on very mobile or perspired areas: If you sweat or move a lot, the adhesive can loosen, especially on joints like knees or elbows.
  • Cooling sensation fades quickly: While the menthol effect is noticeable at first, it doesn’t last as long as the lidocaine.
  • Not a cure-all for chronic pain: Works well for temporary relief but may not be strong enough for severe or deep pain conditions.
  • Adhesion issues: Edges may lift with flexion or sweat, especially on joints or lower extremities, where tape may be required to hold the patch in place securely. However, a stronger adhesive might cause skin irritation, especially if you need to apply and remove multiple gel patches successively until the muscle pain resolves permanently.
  • Application challenges: Thin and stretchy material requires care to avoid folding and sticking to itself when being applied. If the affected area is inaccessible, such as the back, you might need someone to apply the patch for you.

Who Is This Best For?

  • People with mild to moderate muscle or joint pain
  • Individuals with arthritis or general body aches
  • Anyone looking for easy, on-the-go pain relief without messy creams

Value for Money

Priced at $29.74 for two packs of 15 patches (30 patches total), equivalent to $0.99 each, on Amazon at the time of this review’s publication, these large Sumifun lidocaine and menthol pain relief patches deliver excellent value. By comparison, the Salonpas Lidocaine Gel-Patch (15 Count) 2 Pack cost $47.99, equivalent to $1.60 each, on Amazon as of this writing. That’s a significant difference in price! Note that Salonpas also makes other pain relief gel patches with different and potentially less effective active ingredients.

The addition of menthol in the Sumifun lidocaine patches is helpful, enhancing the pain relief at an affordable price. For occasional use on mild to moderate pain, these patches are definitely a worthwhile investment.

My Final Verdict

The Sumifun 4% Lidocaine + 1% Menthol Patches are a solid choice for those who need fast-acting, targeted pain relief. The combination of numbing lidocaine and soothing menthol makes them effective for many types of pain, especially sore muscles. They offer a convenient and affordable way to manage muscle aches and pains without a prescription.

Sunbeam Shoulder Wrap Heating Pad Reviewed

Sunbeam Shoulder Wrap Heating Pad Reviewed
If you ever have shoulder or neck pain, you will understand instantly why I love my Sunbeam Shoulder Wrap Heating Pad.

After decades of trying to force a standard back heating pad to wrap around my neck, I finally invested in a heating pad that was made specifically for shoulders and necks.  It is well worth every penny I paid for it!

When I think of the thousands of times that I tried to hold a heating pad between my neck and shoulder, I seriously wonder why I waited so long to search for a shoulder wrap heating pad.

Since I need both hands to type, I really don't have an easy way to hold a square heating pad in place between my neck and shoulder.  If I try to hold it in place by squeezing it between my shoulder and neck, then I end up with even worse neck pain.  Out of desperation, I've even tried tying a heating pad to my neck with a long shoe string.  Actually, that kind of worked. but I don't recommend it.  What I do recommend is the Sunbeam Shoulder Wrap Heating Pad.

The Sunbeam Shoulder Wrap Heating Pad

Sunbeam 885-911 Renue Heat Therapy Neck and Shoulder Wrap
This is truly one of the best gifts I have ever given myself!  Even if I am not in extreme pain, the warmth gives relief to my shoulders when I spend the day typing.

The shoulder wrap heating pad has several features that I love, but my favorite is that little heated piece of fabric that goes up the back of my neck.  Having the heat situated and held in place on the vertebral segments in my neck is fabulous!  It tends to make my lower back quite jealous.

Other Wonderful Features of the Sunbeam Shoulder Wrap Heating Pad

  •  Magnetic Clasp in the front to hold it closed at the throat
  •  Multiple Heat Settings from Warm to High Heat
  •  Designed to "drape" over Shoulders and Around Neck
  •  Weighted to Hold in Place
  •  Auto Shut-off after 2 hours
  •  Super long Electric Cord  (Mine is 9 feet)
  •  Odorless, unless you use a pain relieving cream or rub for  penetrating relief.
  •  Machine Washable
The instructions say that you can lightly spritz the wrap with water for a damp steam effect, but I have never tried that.  I use mine dry.

My Heated Wrap is the Sunbeam 885-911, but you may prefer the longer (XL) version

Review of a Great DIY Back Pain Relief Tool

Body Back Buddy on Amazon
A co-worker has brought a pain-relief tool to the office and has offered to share. I have since used this Body Back Buddy self-massage tool multiple times to find relief for chronic pain and to help relax my shoulders and back. If you experience chronic pain in your back or shoulders, this little gadget may also be helpful to you. I know that it has been so helpful to me at work that I'm ordering one of my own to keep at home.

Migraines and the Search for Pain Relief

My co-worker and I suffer from chronic migraines.  She and I are constantly discussing ways we find relief and things that are not as helpful. When she brought this massage tool to work my initial thought was that it was a gimmick. But I gave it a try anyway. With chronic migraines,  you become willing to give most anything a try.

As soon as I picked up this plastic hook with knobs, I found relief. It was intuitive to use. I just hooked it up over my shoulder and started "rubbing" the knots near my shoulder blades and spine.

I had thought the hard plastic knobs would be uncomfortable. But the hardness of the knobs was, in part, what makes it so effective. And the curve of the item helped me to apply hard pressure to my tender spots. I was able to both press against and rub the stubborn knots as well as run the plastic knobs up and down my spine.

Tender Points or Muscle Knots?

My sibling is officially diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and talks about her tender points and pain. We compare notes. I have similar painful points that I call my "traveling bumps". There never seems to be an explanation for the location of these tender areas.  I have not been officially diagnosed with Fibro and while my pains may be caused by whatever causes my migraines, the pain is similar to my sibling's Fibro. I am planning on suggesting that my sister give the Body Back Buddy a try.

This massage tool has been wonderful at reaching and releasing my painful "traveling bumps" no matter their origin.

The Pros and Cons of the Body Back Massage Tool

There are many pros and only a couple of cons that I have found with this wonderful pain relief tool. I am sure that you'll have your own opinion of the Body Back Buddy massage tool, but this is my list:

Body Back Buddy Pros:

  • immediate relief where you are - without the time commitment and expense of massage appointments
  • heavy duty and sturdy plastic - it does not feel as though it will break while in use
  • the curve and placement of the knobs are intuitive - I picked it up and used it effectively without looking at any instructions
  • compared to other pain relief tools and mechanical massagers - it is very affordable
  • I can easily massage my neck, spine, shoulders, and back with this tool (it also massages your feet, but I have kept my feet off of it, since it is borrowed)
  • the Body Back Company has made this, in the US, since 1995 and has a good track record and good reviews

Body Back Buddy Cons:

  • beware of copies and knock-offs that seem to be more cheaply made and less sturdy
  • it is large and can't be hidden in a small bag or purse for transport
  • I am overweight and cannot do the technique that involves placing the Back Buddy around my middle (seen below)
the only technique I cannot do (photo courtesy of Amazon)
