Fresh Baked Bread from Frozen Bread Dough

To save on trips to the grocery store for something as basic as a loaf of bread, it is handy to have a package of frozen bread dough on hand. You can purchase frozen bread dough in packages with multiple loaves (I currently have one with five loaves in it) and always have it handy whenever bread is needed or you cannot get out to shop.  In addition, you will have the taste of fresh baked bread after enjoying the delicious aroma of your bread baking. 

Making bread from scratch is a fun cooking project for many, but for a quick way to enjoy fresh baked bread, this frozen bread dough is a delightfully delicious product.


Basic Instructions on Package:


Regular Method – 5 to 8 hours



Frozen bread dough set out to rise


  1. Coat a loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray. Place frozen dough in pan, and cover with plastic wrap coated with cooking spray to keep it from sticking to dough while rising.
  2. Let dough rise for 4 to 7 hours, until dough is 1” above pan. Actual time depends on the temperature of your kitchen. Carefully remove the plastic wrap.
  3. Preheat the oven to 350F. Bake bread 20-25 minutes, until golden brown.
  4. Remove bread from pan at once and place on a wire rack to cool. Brush the top with melted butter or margarine, if desired. Place bread on its side for easier slicing.


Refrigerator Method – 8 to 16 hours


  1. Coat a loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray. Place frozen dough in pan, and cover with plastic wrap coated with cooking spray to keep it from sticking to dough while rising.
  2. Place frozen dough in your refrigerator 6 to 12 hours before using. Dough will not rise, but will be thawed and ready to use. Set dough out to rise for 2 to 3 hours, until dough is 1” above pan. Actual time depends on the temperature of your kitchen. Carefully remove the plastic wrap.


Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake bread 20-25 minutes, until golden brown.

  1. Oh yummy, who doesn't just love the scents of fresh baking bread? For me it's one of those things that I love in my own home. I never thought of having frozen bread on hand though. Silly me! I will have to rectify that situation very soon.

    1. It is very handy to have these frozen loaves of bread in your freezer, especially if you don't have time to shop for bread (or the weather is terrible). It was particularly helpful and handy throughout the Panendemic because for awhile bread was in short supply at the grocery store.

  2. Oh! wow!! There is nothing better than having fresh bread right out of the oven. I can taste it now, still warm with the butter melting all over it. It's really a great idea to have some frozen dough on hand. We all need to save some trips to the store for a while.

  3. What a beautiful loaf of bread! My husband loves fresh baked bread. I've never tried frozen dough, but I love the idea. Do you have a recommended brand? It certainly would be convenient to have on hand.

    1. Mouse, this is the first time I have ever purchased frozen bread dough. I just bought the 'store brand' at my usual grocery store and it is absolutely delicious and so easy to prepare. Just thaw, let rise, and bake! That's all there is to it. So convenient to have on hand. And tastes just as good as making bread from scratch with yeast and all the kneading work.

      I am also considering now getting a bread slicer to help in slicing the bread evenly.

    1. It IS a great idea, Mary Beth. In addition to having bread on hand whenever you need it, it is also a great accompaniment to family meals such as a big pot of stew.

  5. Love fresh bread! I used to bake it myself when the kids were still home. Thanks for the reminder of using frozen dough...I may start keeping a supply on hand.

  6. WOW, does that ever look good! I'll absolutely consider this. I've made bread before, but this is a terrific way to get that fresh baked taste and smell without the hassle.

  7. What a wonderful idea, Elf! I used to bake homemade bread often (and still have my old Zojirushi bread machine that I often used to bake it in). Since I switched to a very low-carb lifestyle, now I can only dream about the smell and taste! These days I bake only grain-free, low-carb breads and rolls, but I sure do miss the lovely smell of baking bread dough made with flour and yeast.

  8. Definitely a great idea, Elf. I have purchased pizza dough frozen in a multi pack but never looked for or thought of using it as bread.
