Plano Storage Unit Review

Plano 4-Shelf Storage Unit
I am a crochet and needlework crafter who creates for family & friends and for my Etsy Shop. Over the years I have acquired a fairly large inventory of completed crafts and an even larger inventory of yarn and related materials.

I keep all this 'stuff' in plastic bins to keep them clean and organized. I have stored them in 'stacks'  (bins on top of bins) to conserve space, but this is inconvenient most of the time as I have to move bins to reach the ones underneath and then re-stack. And, of course the exact needed item at any given time always seems to be on the 'bottom' of the stack!

I finally found the perfect solution ~ a way to keep each bin quickly available, and also save space.  It was as easy as purchasing the Plano 4-shelf storage unit. In fact, once I bought and set up one, I realized that TWO would be even more helpful.

This shelf storage unit by Plano has four shelves that are 30 inches wide and 14 inches deep and stands about 55 inches high.  There are 16 inches between shelves, which gives me plenty of storage space. The unit is made of durable heavy-duty plastic. It comes unassembled, but has easy snap-fit assembly which only takes minutes to put together. No tools are needed.

The shelf unit pictured here is in tan, I bought mine in white and I have seen others in black. It is also reasonably priced.

The Perfect Solution for my Craft Room

Plano is the perfect answer to my craft storage problem, as my plastic bins fit just right on the shelves. Most of the plastic storage bins I use measure approximately 25 x 14 x 12 inches, thus the dimensions of each shelf on the storage unit allow plenty of room for each bin. It is SO handy to be able to take out just one bin to obtain a needed item without having to move and reposition a stack of bins. Since my storage bins are see-through, I can also quickly spot the exact bin I need.

  1. I know from experience myself that the Plano Storage shelves are awesome! They are lightweight, yet sturdy which makes them easy to move if needed. We purchased 2 sets of the shelves several years ago to display our son's Legos. I expected them to yellow with age, but so far they are still very white. I don't know why, but I had not considered them for my Ebay storage room. Your point about not having to move the boxes to get something out of the bottom box make me think how much I needed these shelves in my Ebay room. Excellent idea and review, Elf!

    1. Always glad to offer a helpful tip, Mouse. I don't know why I didn't consider shelving units for my craft storage years ago. Guess it took many annoying times of moving bins and boxes before it occurred to me that there was a simpler, more efficient way.

  2. Who doesn't need more storage space? I know that this would be a great addition to my apartment. We have lovely large closets, but when using them for storage, they don't have shelves, this would be a great addition in that spare closet and all my other half's computer parts, cables, and other "stuff" could go on those shelves. Hummmmmm I think I need these!

  4. Yarn and crafting supplies takes up so much space and it is so hard to keep it organized. I'm glad you found a solution that works for you. I also use clear plastic tubs. It helps to see what I have. Thank you so much for including my Origami Rack. I LOVE that thing and wish I had a few more.

  5. I think I could use a couple of these. I just need to figure out where I can put them. The bins I have to store are much larger, so I'd have to do some measurements first. But it's nice to know this option is here should I finally decide on what I need to store. I like that these are so light and easy to move.

  6. It feels so great to have an organizing system that works. I converted an unused space in my home to help with storing craft supplies. The first thing I did was install shelving units. Your new shelving system looks perfect.

    1. I know, Tracey. Whatever one wants is always inconveniently located at the bottom of the stack. Reason for needing organizers. :)

    1. Thanks, Margaret. I think crafters appreciate storage solutions most of all. One cannot easily work on a crafting project if supplies are not neatly organized.
