Iron Man Marvel Movie Review

Iron Man Marvel Movie Review
You may wonder why I am reviewing the movie Iron Man today.  After all, it was originally released over a decade ago.

There are two reasons why I have opted to review Iron Man.  One, because we have a generation of kids who are now old enough to be interested in the Marvel Avengers, but were not old enough in the beginning to watch the movies in order as they were released.

Second, Iron Man sets the foundation for all of the following Avengers movies.  Every Marvel fan, old or young, needs to see the movie Iron Man.  I believe we all have a much greater appreciation for Tony Stark and his leadership role in all of the Marvel Avengers movies when we know the background.

Iron Man Movie Review

Iron Man (Single-Disc Edition)Check PriceIron Man was the first Marvel Avengers movie.  It was released in 2008 and starred Robert Downey, Jr. in the leading role.  Downey, Jr. is still playing Iron Man aka Tony Stark today in the Avengers movies.  That alone, makes this movie remarkable.

Tony Stark is a genius.  In the movie, he graduated summa cum laude* from MIT at the age of 17.    When he was 21, he assumed ownership of Stark Industries, a weapons developing company founded by his deceased father.

Tony is kidnapped by terrorists in enemy occupied territory after demonstrating a new weapon to US military troops.  They insist he build the new weapon for them, promising he will be released upon its completion.  Tony doesn't believe they will ever release him and neither does his assistant and fellow prisoner, Yinsen.

Tony designs the first Iron Man suit out of necessity and together, he and Yinsen build it.  After 3 months of being held prisoner and forced to work, Tony and Yinsen put their plan into action, but it is only with great sacrifice that Stark survives to return to the US.  Upon his return, he is determined that Stark Industries will never again build weapons of destruction.  However, the company CEO, Obadiah Stane, does not agree with Tony.  Stane is equally determined to make sure they continue building the weapons, even more powerful than before.

The battle between Stark and Stane is tremendous, but there are a lot of surprising reasons why it became so hostile.  You will want to watch this movie!

Even if you have already seen the more current Avenger movies, take a few hours to step back into the past and grab an Iron Man dvd.  You won't be sorry!

Avengers Movies

On interesting note:  Even though Captain America was the first avenger, the Marvel Avengers movies started with Iron Man.

By the way, The Incredible Hulk was the second Avenger movie.  It was released a month later in 2008.  However, it was 2 years later before Iron Man 2 was released in 2010.  And, 3 years before Thor was released in 2011.   Captain America was also released in 2011.

All of these movies are fabulous on their own, but together, they are magnificent!

Ant-Man and The Wasp Movie Review

Ant-man and The Wasp - The Official Movie Special Hardcover Book

Background for the Plot of Ant-Man and The Wasp

Once again, Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Michael Douglas (Dr. Hank Pym),  and Evangeline Lilly (The Wasp / Dr. Pym's daughter), join together in battle.  However, this time it is against a very unexpected, mysterious foe, while also having to elude the FBI.

Ant-Man and The Wasp picks up the story two years after the Marvel movie, Ant-Man, with Scott Lang under house arrest.  He was found guilty of violations of the world peace treaty for his actions in the movie Captain America, Civil War.  Dr Pym and his daughter, Hope, have been in hiding for 2 years thanks to Scott.  Because he used the Ant-Man suit when he helped Captain America, they were now wanted by the FBI.

Dr. Pym and Hope are pretty angry with Scott.  They had realized that since Ant-Man had survived and returned from the Quantum Realm (in the Ant-Man movie), that Hope's mother, who was believed to have died there, could possibly have survived too, and they wanted to rescue her.  Because they lost their home, their lab, and had to go into hiding, their rescue mission was on hold until they could recreate their lab.

I don't really like spoilers, but this one is imperative in order to explain the plot of Ant-Man and The Wasp.  However, I will not go further than needed to give you a basic plot outline.

When Scott experienced a mind-meld with Janet van Dyne, Hope's mother, he immediately called Dr. Pym, even though that was a violation of his house arrest terms.   Scott had no way of knowing that Dr. Pym had just opened access to the Quantum Realm again, but Dr. Pym knew as soon as he heard from Scott, that they unfortunately needed him.  Apparently, Janet was able to communicate with them through Scott.

Unbeknownst to Dr. Pym, a previous colleague, Elihas Starr, continued working on a tunnel to the Quantum Realm on his own after he was fired by Dr. Pym for stealing.  When his tunnel blew up, Starr and his wife were both killed, but their child was alive, yet changed forever.  Now an adult, she needed access to the Quantum Realm or she would die.  As the Ghost, she was determined to steal Pym's lab and tunnel to the Quantum Realm.

Ant-Man and The Wasp are required to fight Ghost in order to save Janet van Dyne.

You may think you know what will happen by what I have written, but once again, you are in for a shock.  Remember, all of the Marvel movies have tie-ins with each others plot.

By the way, gotta love those ants!!!

Ant-Man Movie Review

Ant-Man Movie Review
Ready for your next Marvel movie fix?

If you haven't seen Ant-Man, it is definitely one you will want to watch soon.  In true Marvel style, good must conquer evil or the world will suffer.

One of the things I enjoy most about the Marvel movies is that they always choose the right actors to play the superheroes and villains.  Ant-Man is no exception.  Paul Rudd is the perfect actor to play the part of Ant-man.  Plus, Micheal Douglas stars as the extraordinarily intelligent inventor of the Ant-Man suit and shrinking abilities.

This movie also introduces us to the chosen actress to play the part of The Wasp.  Evangeline Lilly is awesome and I definitely look forward to seeing The Ant-Man and The Wasp Marvel Movie that released on July 6, 2018.

UPDATE: I have now seen Ant-Man and The Wasp and have reviewed it Here: Ant-Man and The Wasp Movie Review

Plot of Antman - The Movie

(not the comic version)

Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) invented the Ant-man and the ability to shrink a man into the size of an ant.  Dr. Pym was in fact the first Ant-Man.  However, seeing how Ant-Man would be exploited and knowing there were others already trying to replicate his technology, Dr. Pym elected to resign, take the Ant-Man suit in order to safely hide it and his technology.

Ant-Man (Plus Bonus Features)The movie fast-tracks to current day where Darren Cross, his former mentee, is too close to replicating Pym's technology.  It is evident to Dr. Pym that it is time to act.  He carefully selects his successor, Scott Lang.  He has been watching Lang for some time, ever since he successfully stole money back from VistaCorp and returned the money to their victims.  Since Lang has a master's degree in electrical engineering as well as a vigilante mentality, Pym believes he will make the perfect Ant-Man.

Dr. Pym and his daughter, Hope, train Scott Lang to work with ants and to become Ant-Man in preparation to "defeat" Darren Cross and his Yellowjacket invention.  The ants in the movie are also incredible!  They make a magnificent team.

This is a MUST SEE BEFORE you go to the theater to watch Ant-Man and The Wasp!

Avengers: Infinity War Movie Review

Avengers: Infinity War Movie Review
Marvel fans love this movie!  All of our favorites join the battle to save the world from evil domination.

The Avengers team up with The Guardians of the Galaxy to battle Thanos who is collecting the 6 infinity stones with the ultimate goal of taking over the universe.   With each infinity stone, Thanos becomes more powerful and harder to defeat.  He ruthlessly murders the keepers of each stone using whatever means is necessary for him to add to his collection and ultimate, unstoppable power.

Thanos' plan is to rule the universe and eliminate 50% of the population.  He claims the resources of the world are finite, therefore he wishes to decrease the surplus population so those who are left will be sustainable.  His claims that he can eliminate hunger may sound noble and benevolent until you realize mass murder is necessary.

What I didn't expect was to see several of my beloved heroes die at the hand of powerful evil.

Asgard, Thor's homeland, has been previously destroyed in the movie Thor:  Ragnarok.  For viewers, the Infinity War begins when Thanos (Josh Brolin) attacks Thor's refugee ship.  Thor has been taken captive and Loki subsequently surrenders the Space infinity stone in his possession in exchange for Thor's life.  In a heart-sickening turn of events, Thanos murders both Loki and Heimdall (Idris Elba).  But, Thor is left alive and is rescued by The Guardians of the Galaxy.

The battle moves into the streets of New York where Doctor Strange, who possesses the Time infinity stone, is attacked.   Iron Man, Hulk and Spiderman all try to protect Doctor Strange to prevent the theft of the Time stone.

In Scotland, Vision, who possesses the Mind stone, also finds himself under attack with Scarlett Witch being his only defender at first.  However, Captain America, Black Widow & Falcon show up just in time to save both Scarlett Witch and Vision from certain death.

The final battle takes place in Wakanda, home of the Black Panther, where Vision was taken to be protected.  All of the remaining Avengers and Guardians arrive to defend Vision and the universe, but all do not survive.  The end is shocking!

I couldn't move from my seat when the movie was over.  I kept wanting more.  I needed there to be more, but clearly that will have to wait for the next movie.

Do I Recommend Avengers: Infinity War

Absolutely!  However, I plan to buy the DVD as soon as it is released and I would recommend Marvel fans should do the same.  I want to be able to watch it again right before I go to the theater when the sequel is released.

One final note: Be sure you sit through the credits at the end of the movie. You will want to see the teaser with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and who he summons for help. A new avenger is clearly on the horizon!

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Movie Review

Guardians of the Galaxy Movies Reviewed
Guardians of the Galaxy is a truly fabulous Marvel movie that I would recommend for anyone!   The movie is a mix of sci-fi, great animation, several engaging stories & witty dialog.  There were several times in both movies, Guardians of the Galaxy & Guardians of the Galaxy 2, where I couldn't help myself and laughed out loud.  It is really wonderful to walk away from a movie feeling like you had a great time, not to mention the characters feel like friends.

For Mother's Day, my son surprised me with the DVD of the original Guardians of the Galaxy DVD and movie tickets to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2.  We spent the afternoon together watching the Guardians.  We started with the DVD and then immediately went to the theater for the second movie.  What a wonderful day and the perfect way to celebrate!

I highly recommend watching the movies back to back.

The Plot of Guardians of the Galaxy

 Guardians of the Galaxy
(Plus Bonus Features)
The original DVD introduces you to  all of the main characters and shows us exactly how several unrelated outlaws end up banding together to become the "Guardians of the Galaxy".

The movie starts with Peter Quill as a child listening to 80's music while sitting in a waiting room at the hospital.  His mother is dying from a brain tumor and his whole world is about to be turned upside down.  When his mother dies, he runs from the hospital devastated by the reality of what just happened.  It is at that very moment that he is abducted by Yondu and his team of ravagers (thieves) from another planet.  We do find out later that they were hired by his father to retrieve him from earth when his mother dies.

We are quickly fast-forwarded 26 years to Peter as an adult and we discover that he has been raised by Yondu as a ravager.  Peter seems happy enough, but it is a time of unrest in the galaxy.  A peace treaty has been signed between the Kree and Xandar, but not everyone is willing to adhere to that treaty.  Ronan is a powerful Kree who wants more than revenge, he wants complete annihilation of all Xandarians.

Yondu's group of pirates have been  commissioned to "acquire" a precious orb.  However, Peter decides to go alone to steal the orb.   Once he has the orb in his possession, he does have to battle Ronan's warriors to keep it.   When Peter goes to the Broker to sell the orb and tells him about his battle with Ronan's army, the Broker no longer wants anything to do with the orb and forces him to leave his shop.

Peter meets Gamora, who has been sent by Ronan to retrieve the orb.  A tussle for the orb leaves both Gamora and Peter vulnerable to bounty hunters who want to capture Peter for the reward offered by Yondu for the betrayer, Peter.  And, this is how we meet Rocket (the raccoon to earthlings) and Groot (a live tree).

They are all arrested by Nova Corps officers and sent to Kyln (prison).  Because of her association with Ronan, the prison is full of inmates who want to kill Gamora.  One of those inmates is Drax.

Now, we have been introduced to the characters who become the Guardians of the Galaxy:  Peter Quill, Rocket, Groot, Gamora & Drax.  They form an alliance to break out of Kyln, but that alliance becomes a "family" who battle Ronan for possession of the orb and it's contents, an infinity stone.  Possession of that infinity stone ensures the salvation of the entire planet of Xander.

The Plot of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - Currently in Theaters

 Posters USA -
Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 II Movie Poster GLOSSY FINISH
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 picks up where 1 leaves off.  The Guardians are now an official team of Marvel defenders.   They have been hired to protect valuable batteries from an attacking monster.   Their payment for that job is given in trade form.  They are paid with Gamora's sister, Nebula.

Rocket can't seem to resist the temptation to steal a few of the batteries and the Guardians are pursued by the Sovereign.  They are forced to crash land after they are saved by a mysterious ship.   When the unidentifiable ship lands, Peter Quill finds himself face to face with his father, a man he has never met before.  Ego (Kurt Russell) invites Peter to his planet.  Peter, Gamora & Drax leave Rocket to repair their ship and go with Ego to his planet.

A lot of secrets are revealed on Ego's planet and Peter has some difficult realities and choices to make.

Both of these action packed movies are filled with witty dialog, lovable characters and scenes of strong emotions.  Guardians of the Galaxy 2 forces the Guardians to come to terms with a lot of their own personal relationships and the "people" who they really love.

One additional point of interest about Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is the introduction of Sylvester Stallone as Starhawk, the overall commander of the Ravagers.

Doctor Strange Movie Review

Doctor Strange Movie Review
The movie Doctor Strange is based on the Marvel comics character, therefore it pushes beyond any realistic boundries.  However, this is truly a fabulous fantasy movie that is mostly accurate with the depiction.  I do love it when movies stick to the original book or source plot.

Benedict Cumberbatch was perfect for the part of Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange!  I was amazed at how much he actually looks like the comic illustration of Doctor Strange.  His image will now forever be fixed in my mind as the face of Doctor Strange.

In addition to having the looks, he did an excellent job of playing the role.  He was quite convincing as an arrogant, self-centered doctor with a god complex.  Then later, as a superhero straight from the pages of our favorite comic books.

Doctor Strange Movie Review

Synopsis of Doctor Strange Movie Plot

 DOCTOR STRANGE MOVIE POSTER
2 Sided ORIGINAL INTL FINAL 27x40
BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH
Dr. Stephen Strange is an accomplished neurosurgeon who has received multiple awards for his outstanding work.  He is revered and hated by his colleagues.  They need his expertise, but they despise his superior, know-it-all attitude.  That "untouchable" and infallible attitude is exactly what costs him everything.

While he is driving at high speeds in the rain, he is talking on his cell phone and also looking at the images that are being sent to him on it.  Distracted from driving the car, he ends up in a serious accident that causes irreparable nerve damage to his hands.  In desperation to regain his surgical abilities, he undergoes several operations.  Some are even considered extremely risky.

During rehab, he learns of one patient who actually was able to beat the odds and was miraculously healed.  Dr. Strange goes to visit the man to find out his secret.  The man sends him in search of the "Ancient One".  When he finally finds her, she rejects him at first, but is convinced by Mordo, one of the masters, that she should reconsider and admit Dr. Strange.  That is when the martial arts instruction and spiritual teaching begins.

Because Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange has a photographic memory, he learns the fundamental basics of sorcery quickly by reading, but the actual focused ability takes longer for him to master.  Once he does, he has to decide if he wants to harness his new found abilities to heal his own physical handicap or if he will stand as the defender of the universe against the evil Kaecilius, who wishes to usher in the master of darkness to rule the world eternally.

To find out what Doctor Strange decides, you will need to see the movie yourself.

Conclusion and My Opinion of the Movie Doctor Strange

This is a great movie that I could easily recommend to anyone.  Since it is based on the Marvel comics, it is intended for all ages.  As with any fiction, especially comics that feature superheroes and supervillans with extraordinary powers, there is a required ability to suspend reality.  However, the struggle between our world and the supernatural does seem to have a parallel to reality and our constant struggle of good against evil.

One note, Mordo's character is a bit different in the movie than in the Marvel comics.  In the movie, he is a needed ally, however in the comics Mordo is a supervillian who plots to kill both the Ancient One and Doctor Strange.  I believe the movie ended in a way that sets the stage for Mordo to transition to his original character, but in this movie, he plays a good guy.

When you see the movie, be sure you stay until the very end of the credits.  There is extra footage that you will not want to miss!

To my fellow contributor Buckhawk, you will be especially interested in that footage because it includes Thor.
