Book Review - Tracker: A Fox Walker Novel by Indy Quillen

Tracker: A Fox Walker Novel is an award-winning, suspense novel set in the beautiful but rugged terrain of Colorado near the San Juan mountains.  Fox Walker is asked to go into the wilderness to confirm or put to rest the rumors that someone or something is out there. In this story, cold weather may not be the only danger coming.

Photo with Text Tracker A Fox Walker Novel Review

The Tracker. Fox Walker is a Native American who lives in remote Colorado near the San Juan mountains. His grandfather taught him the old ways of living and survival. Fox's tracking skills are supreme and he is often asked by the local Sheriff to assist with search and rescues in the wilderness of the San Juan Mountains. This story begins with Fox being asked to assist again.

Historically, the area that is now named Gray's Forest was considered mukua sogope (a place of mystery and spiritual power). Add to existing reputation an unsolved murder last spring, sightings of someone or something recently, and pressure from the local press with their stories that keep the rumors stirred up causes the Sheriff to act. Walker is asked to prove no one is out there, that there is not someone who may be in need of assistance, or confirm that there is or isn't some sort of fugitive hiding out.

Soon after he begins his search, Walker finds evidence of a person using wilderness survival techniques to dig and harvest edible wild plants. With confirming human presence, he wonders if it is true that the murderer is hiding out. When he finally finds footprints, the mystery compounds when he determines that it is a barefoot woman.

"A woman. Out here, shoeless and alone?"

-from Tracker: A Fox Walker Novel

The Wilderness WomanThe woman is alone in the wilderness. Walker hears her before he sees her. She is singing a song that was reminiscent of native Ute songs. The woman uses wooden, fire-hardened digging sticks to gather edible plants. The cookfire is near the cliffs and shallow creek. And near the front of a cave entrance.

The petite woman is also barefoot, clothed only in a pair of shorts, and has long blonde hair. Her physical appearance and dress does not reconcile with her living in a cave with things such as hand-woven bark container and fishing in the creek with her wooden spear.

When Fox Walker and the wilderness woman finally make close contact, he notes that she has some sort of markings or scars on her torso. And surprised that she speaks in a basic mix of English and Shoshone. Many words and things are not familiar to her. While she has some survival knowledge, she lacks memories of a time before waking in the wilderness approximately 6 "moons" ago.  She seems familiar with nothing except the wilderness.

Fall is here. Winter is coming. The woman is as skittish as a young deer and Fox Walker needs to find a way to win her trust and help her survive.

The Fox Walker series consists of 7 books. I quickly started book 2 as soon as I finished Tracker. The author, Indy Quillen, has a new fan. Quillen's knowledge about and love of the natural world shine through. Fox Walker's connection with nature and survival skills flow out of the pages. This is no regurgitated generic survival story. The honest characters grabbed me and I wanted more.

Tracker: The Fox Walker Novel is currently reviewed by 2,183 readers with 4.4 stars. Please take a look at what those reviewers have to say.

Restoration Garden

Missouri Botanical Garden

I had thoroughly enjoyed the book The Last Secret of Lily Adams by Sara Blaydes, that I went searching for other books she might have written. I came across Restoration Garden and also enjoyed this book.  Sara Blaydes has a writing style that fully emersed me into the storyline of the novel. In this book there is again a secret that has been hidden for years, and the book leads you in a path to the discovery of the secret. The book combines mystery, romance and intrigue both in the present day and in the war-torn Europe of the 1940s.

Book Summary

The book begins when Julia Esdaile, a landscape architect, is hired to restore a historic garden at Havenworth Manor in England.  She is hired to restore the gardens for Margaret Clarke, the feisty 92-year-old lady of the manor.  Andrew does not know the reason for the restoration, he just knows that it is very important to his godmother, Margaret. Over the last 80+ the garden has fallen into disrepair.  It is now a jumble of weeds and snarls of bramble.

The book goes back between the present day with Julia and the restoration and the 1940's when Margaret and her older half-sister Irene lived at the manor. There is a portion of the story that deals with children that are sent from London to the countryside to avoid the bombings and then there is the story of Irene.  Irene is an aspiring artist from America who is brought to England when her father marries Margaret's mother.  She dreams of being in the world outside of Havenworth, but wartime has made that impossible for the 17-year-old.  She also dreams of the handsome RAF office James.  When she turns 18, she escapes Havenworth and follows her dreams, but she is then forced to make some hard choices, and she vanishes from Margarets world forever.

The book opens up the gardens as Julia restores them and helps to uncover the secrets that have been hidden all of these years.

I really enjoy reading the book and found it fascinating.

The Sheep Detectives Movie Review

For those who enjoy a cozy mystery, The Sheep Detectives movie is for you!

Our family sat down together to watch The Sheep Detectives and we all loved it.  Even Watson, our Labrador retriever was captivated by the big talking sheep.

Hugh Jackman is, of course, perfect in the part of the shepherd.  He really does exude a caring personality.  I couldn't help but think how ironic it was that Wolverine (a Norwegian word that means "little wolf") would be a sheep shepherd.  I had to remind myself that a wolverine is really a part of the weasel & ferret family, not the canine wolf family, but the wordplay was mentally just too much fun to ignore.

I will warn you in advance, there are a few parts that are very sad.  I guess that is to be expected in a murder mystery, but I was still touched by the sense of loss.  The film does an excellent job of portraying the sheep with sensibilities.  We all know there are "pets" that form a special bond with their people.

In addition to Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson is in the movie.  She plays the part of the attorney.  As always, she is exceptional.  There are several other actors in the movie that I liked and will be watching for in the future.  It really is a great cast of characters!

In the last few years, there haven't been very many movies in the theaters that made me want to get out and go see them.  The Sheep Detectives was one that would have been worth venturing out to see.  However, it wasn't necessary to leave home since the movie is currently being streamed on Amazon Prime.

The Sheep Detectives

The Sheep DetectivesCheck PriceGeorge Hardy is a shepherd that is loved by his flock.  Not only does he feed them, provide them with a safe home, and give them medicine as needed, he has given them all names.  He also reads to them every night, like many of us do for our own children. It is clear he loves his sheep.

When George is murdered, there are a few people in town who are suspects, but he also has two children (twins) who are named in his will.  Because he gave his children up for adoption when his wife died in childbirth, he doesn't know them and neither does anyone else.  Only the attorney, Lydia Harbottle (Emma Thompson), has been in contact with them.

The one police officer in town has never investigated a murder and clearly has no idea how to even begin.  That is where the sheep detectives must get involved.  Thanks to the books that George has read to them, they do know a lot about investigating a murder, but first they must get up the courage to venture into town to help.

The interaction between the intelligent, "communicating" sheep and the people in this movie is quite precious.  I doubt I will ever look at sheep the same way again.

__________

I highly recommend this entertaining movie as a family movie.  We had 3 generations of people and a puppy watching.  We all loved it!

Murder She Wrote Books

Books from TV Series

My husband and I really enjoyed the Murder She Wrote TV series, both when it originally ran in the 80's and 90's and today in reruns.  The original series consisted of 264 episodes all starring Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher.   What we didn't realize until recently is that there is a whole series of books (currently 63) that are written based on the characters from the TV Series.  So now we are enjoying our favorite characters from the TV series in some delightful mystery books.

About the Books

The Murder She Wrote book series began in 1989 and are still being written.  At this writing there are 63 books in the series.

Jessica Fletcher in the TV series as well as the books, is a retired- teacher who writes mystery books. She lives in the made up town of Cabot Cove, Maine.  Jessica seems to often find herself in places where a murder occurs and she "helps" the local law enforcement.

When we started the book series it was like going back to a familiar small town and greeting familiar people.  Along with Jessica we greet Dr. Seth Hazlitt, the town physician, Sheriff Mort Metzger, and a host of other town residents.

We have found the books can be read in any order, but I would suggest reading book 1 "Gin and Daggers" first.  In this book Jessica is off to London to deliver the keynote address at a mystery writer convention.  She is looking forward to visiting with her mentor, Marjorie Ainsworth.  While at the convention, Marjorie is found stabbed to death in her bedroom.  Jessica is at first a suspect but then goes on to help work with local law enforcement to solve the murder of her good friend.  While there she meets a charming man from Scotland Yard and they develop a friendship.  He comes up in later books.

I really enjoy these cozy mysteries and always look forward to the next one.

The Books on Amazon

The books can be purchased on Amazon.  We enjoy them on Kindle but I know they are also available on Audible and Paperback.  Here is a link to the books on Amazon.

The Fatal Flotilla at Sea Oats Beach

Review This Book Review

This fun new cozy mystery by Karen Whalen is sure to delight all the cozy mystery fans out there.  I have been a fan of Karen's mysteries for several years now, and I always look forward to her new releases.  This latest book did not disappoint.  In this book she brings back Breanna Hart and her interesting group of friends.

Book Summary

Breanna Hart is an interesting character who is a real animal lover and volunteers at the local animal shelter.  As this book begins Breanna is at the Flotilla just before Christmas in Sea Oats Beach.  All of the boats are brightly decorated with shimmering lights as the parade in front of the beach.  Everyone comes out to watch the flotilla, and it is a delightful sight.  Breanna too is enjoying the festivities until they see an abandoned boat floating nearby and she discovers a dead body on the boat.  The victim is found to be killed by a gunshot.  He was a big supporter of the animal shelter where Breanna volunteers

Breanna takes it upon herself to go on a fact-finding mission to discover who the murderer was.  She gets the help of several of her friends and also a bloodhound from the shelter named Tracker.  She has several threatening incidents that occur that put her in danger, and she is warned by the police to stay out of the investigation.  Breanna cannot help herself though and continues to search for clues.

As the holiday approaches she is determined to discover the culprit.

The Myron Bolitar Mystery Series by Harlan Coben

Since 1990, Harlan Coben has written 18 standalone novels in the mystery and thriller categories, and two series.  This is an overall review of his 12-book (to date) Myron Bolitar mystery series.

Image of a basketball going through a hoop

Synopsis of the Myron Bolitar Series

Images of the book series for Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar series
Myron Bolitar Series 11 Books Set

The leading character of this Myron Bolitar series of thrillers has a leading character by the same name. As the series begins, Myron is a 31-year-old formerly renowned basketball player who won two NCAA titles in four years at Duke University after breaking all records in high school. Just after being recruited by the Boston Celtics, he had a career-ending injury to his knee in a pre-season game. His basketball prowess is often referred to in the character’s back-story throughout the series.

Afterwards, Myron returned to college, obtained a law degree at Harvard, and eventually became a sports agent with his agency, MB SportsReps, representing sports stars.

The two main supporting characters include his best friend, Win (Windsor Horne Lockwood III), an eccentric, philandering billionaire who often gets involved in Myron’s cases.  Win can probably best be described as an anti-hero, having some psychopathic tendencies. In many of the books, Myron and Win debate the ethical nature of various actions, but they usually accomplish what they set out to do.

Then there is his assistant at MB SportReps, Esperanza Diaz, who eventually becomes his partner (in the 7th Bolitar novel Darkest Fear) after Esperanza gets her law degree. She’s very close to both Myron and Win and very protective of both.

Bolitar is a good agent for his clients, taking care of their needs and wants while being careful to not exploit them like bigger agencies. He has office space in the Locke-Horne Investments & Securities building, which is owned by Win. Myron offers his client the choice of hiring Win for financial management.

Myron is from a Jewish background, grew up in New Jersey, and is very close to his parents. His mother is a former lawyer herself, and his dad is a factory owner. His favorite drink is chocolate Yoo-Hoo.

Summary

The series has quite a few ‘adventures’, since Myron keeps getting involved in solving problems for his clients. This most likely comes from the fact that both Myron and Win once did some undercover work for the FBI. Thus, they keep finding themselves playing ‘accidental detectives’ when needed for Myron’s clients.

The Myron Bolitar series began with Deal Breaker in 1995.   It currently has 12 novels, through Think Twice published in 2024. There is a spin-off of a three book young adult series featuring Myron’s nephew, Mickey Bolitar (the Mickey Bolitar Trilogy), which debuted in 2011.

Windsor Horne Lockwood III received his own standalone novel “Win” in 2021.

Win and Myron are both fans of Batman, often calling their transport the "Batmobile." There is quite a bit of humor throughout the series, which keeps these ‘thrillers’ more on the light-hearted side of suspense stories.

I have enjoyed all of Harlan Coben’s books, but most especially his Myron Bolitar Series and have read the entire series more than once. I highly recommend them to fans of thrillers/suspense/mystery novels and of Harlan Coben.

The Cat in the Stacks Cozy Mystery Series Reviewed

Starring volunteer librarian Charlie Harris and his rescue Maine Coon cat, Diesel.

A Maine Coon Cat named Mister

We first meet Charlie and Diesel in Book I - Murder Past Due, the 2010 debut of this charming and delightful series.

To date, author Miranda James has written 17 books in the series, with Something Whiskered having been published in 2025.

Series Synopses

Charlie Harris is recently retired from his position as a Library Director in Houston. Widowed, and with his two children grown and pursuing their own careers, Charlie decides to move back to his hometown, a small town near the coast in Mississippi where he has inherited a house from a great-aunt.

The house is large, so Charlie rents out a couple of the rooms to boarders. His aunt’s housekeeper has run the house for years and stays on part time to tend to Charlie and his boarders, cleaning and cooking. Since Charlie adores her fine Southern cooking, this works out fine with him.

To keep busy, Charlie volunteers a couple days a week at the local public library and also works one day a week as custodian of the rare books collection at the local college.

Mister, A Maine Coon Cat
One day, as Charlie parks at the library for one of his volunteer days, and anxious to get inside as it is pouring rain, he  spots movement under a nearby bush. Investigating, he discovers a very large, and rather wet, Maine Coon cat. He picks up the cat and takes him inside to dry him off.

As time goes by, Charlies tries to find out where the cat belongs, while taking care of him at his home. Unable to locate an owner, he ends up keeping the cat. Since the cat has a very deep and rumbling purr, Charlie names him Diesel. He decides he sounds just like a diesel engine. :)

Then a murder happens and Charlie Harris and Diesel end up playing detective to solve the crime.

The Cat in the Stacks Series

Diesel goes everywhere with Charlie, including the library where he is a favorite with the children. He even walks on a lease when doing so would keep him safer.

In subsequent books, Charlie and Diesel become involved in more unsolved murders.  The dynamic duo of genial librarian Charlies Harris and his smart and clever cat, Diesel, earn  the reputation of becoming quite good detectives.

*You can find the entire collection available here on Amazon.

Author Miranda  James

Miranda James is a pen name for Dean James, a former medical librarian of two decades. His professional background includes extensive published research on library science, medical history, and the mystery genre. In addition to the Cat in the Stacks series, he is the author of three other series of books. James lives in Texas.

Summary

If you enjoy cozy mysteries and also like stories that include animals, you will be pleased with this Cat in the Stacks series. As time goes on, Charlie’s two kids move back to Charlie's small Mississippi town (the son, a lawyer, from Houston and the daughter, a striving actress, from California) and become a part of subsequent stories. As does the housekeeper’s daughter, who is a senior detective on the town’s police force and keeps bumping into Charlie when he somehow keeps finding bodies.

Each story leads into the next, so reading them in sequence is recommended. The Cat in the Stacks series is a darling and light-hearted series of cozy mysteries.

A Very Merry Murder Mystery-Review

Christmas Cozy Mystery
Christmas Cozy Mystery
I really enjoy cozy mysteries, so as the Christmas season was approaching, I found several Christmas themed cozy mysteries that I downloaded to my Kindle. I found one set of books that contained three different cozy mysteries all about a woman named Meridith and called Merry.  In these mysteries you are introduced to Merry and her interesting cast of friends who live in a small town.

Santa Slaughter

The first book in A Very Merry Murder Mystery series is set during a Christmas festival in a small town.  Meridith "Merry" is in between jobs and is working as an elf in the Santa hut.  Her friend Maggie has a booth by the Santa hut that sells hot chocolate.  On the first day of the festival Merry is working to set up the candy canes and her helpers are getting the children in line to see Santa.  The first two children enter the hut and start talking to Santa when he gets called away for a minute.  When Merry goes to take the photos she discovers that Santa is not there, the children show her how he went out the back door of the hut.  When Merry goes out to check on him she finds him on the ground and the mystery begins.

First Date Disaster

In the second book, Merry's life his getting on a good track.  She now has a job running the cafe/coffee shop in her small town.  She also has a love interest in the town veterinarian.  When the book opens, they have yet to go on a date but that soon changes and things are looking up until they run into a dead body on their first date. Merry feels invested in solving the murder especially when a friend of hers becomes a suspect.  Rob, her date, is supportive and helpful but what a start to a relationship!  Will this work out? Will the murder be solved?  You will need to read the book to discover these answers.

The Body in the Bookstore

The third book in the series takes place when one of Merry's favorite authors, Aloysius Hunt comes to town to talk about his newest book at a local bookstore.  Merry's Aunt Cassie is also a big fan of the Mr. Hunt, so she comes to town to attend the event with Merry.  Before the event they are serving people in the cafe when a group of big fans of the Aloysius Hunt come in for some snacks and drinks before the big event.  They follow Mr. Hunt wherever he is speaking and they are very excited about his newest book.

All is going well until they are at the bookstore, and a tragic accident occurs.  When it turns into a murder, it looks like they have another mystery to solve.

Reviewing Simone Stier's Cafe Cozy Mystery Series

Simone Stier's Cafe Cozy Mystery Series starts with A Shot of Scandal where we first meet Parker Hayes, former true-crime podcaster who has decided she wants to try small town life and is reinventing her life as a cafe owner. When a murder and theft occurs at a high society gala in Magnolia Grove (said small town), Parker's plans for a peaceful life start to dissipate as her investigative senses start to itch.

Reviewing Cafe Cozy Mysteries

If you love cozy mysteries then this is a great series to look into, it includes all the classic cozy tropes of small town, found family & quirky cast. The setting is the southern town of Magnolia Grove and the books really do make it feel like a warm, tight-knit community.

The characters are great, Simone Stier has done a great job in making the town's residents feel real. Parker's friendships and conflicts with other locals are often a highlight in the books. Although each book can be read as a standalone, if you read them in order you see Parker's growth as she lets people in and develops friendships.

I love the name of her cafe - Catch You Latte which is a very subtle nod to her history as a very successful true-crime podcaster. We learn more about why she stepped away from her podcast as we work our way through the early books. There are often references to episodes of her podcast and it's her experience as a former private investigator and podcaster that give her a unique view point on these situations.

I will say that for a small town there's a high body count and somehow Parker seems to keep stumbling into these murder cases at community events, galas, even haunted mansions.

The tone of these books is very cozy, there's humor, warmth, friendship and plenty of coffee and pastries. One of the recurring characters is Hazel who is a student that loves baking so works for Parker in her cafe baking the amazing cakes for Parker to serve. She also dyes her hair a different shade for each book, the color to compliment the coffee special that is featured in the book. I love the sound of these coffee creations as much as I enjoy the story.

In later books Parker also hires Renee to bake and let's just say Renee and Hazel are like chalk and cheese,. I'm looking forward to see where their relationship arc is going to lead.

Another notable character in the books is Major - her part time dog, because every small town cafe owner needs a dog in my opinion. Then there's Parker's love interest Walt, the town historian. I won't dwell on the myriad of other characters in these books - they are all just waiting for you to discover them.

The mysteries are well constructed with red herrings, twists and clues. There's also a good balance between investigating crime and her day to day cafe challenges. In book 2 (A Drizzle of Danger) for example her grand opening turns into a major crisis when a body is found near her cafe.

Later books continue to raise stakes and weave more complex plots eg A Measure of Mayhem involves a Polar Plunge at a festival, property disputes and hidden grudges. Just as you're thinking surely there's no more secrets this small town can hold and is there anyone left to kill? We see Parker being asked to help investigate a 15 year old cold case in a neighboring small town of Willow Springs in A Dusting of Doubt.

These books are great for readers who prefer "cozy" over "dark" crime where the violence is implied rather than graphic. The book's tone stays light even when the stakes are high, making them relaxing reads. If you enjoyed Cleo Coyle's The Coffeehouse Mysteries you will love this series.

The series isn't over yet! There are 14 published books so far with one about to be released on December 1st and when you look at the author's page there are 9 other titles that have been listed as also coming! I am halfway through book 12 at the moment.

I love reading cozy mysteries to relax and unwind when my head is too full to concentrate on my more favorite genres of psychological thrillers or gritty whodunnits. Cozy mysteries tend to be more predictable and everything gets resolved happily which means you don't stay awake afterwards thinking about them and you also don't have to concentrate too hard to figure out what's happening.

I also love that a number of cozy mysteries are more character focused and this series is one where you really feel wrapped up in the community as you read the book - like friends on a page.

With all of that it probably comes as no surprise that I was introduced to this series earlier in the year when I was sick and promptly read the first five books in quick succession. I was introduced to a couple of other cozy mystery series at this time as well, but this is the only one where I have an alert to download the new books every time they are published which should tell you that I definitely give this series a big thumbs up.

If you want to enjoy this series and lots more amazing books then you might want to try out Kindle Unlimited - I love it and would rather give up Netflix than my Kindle Unlimited account!

After a successful eleven-year career as a jockey in England (during which he became one of Britain's leading National Hunt jockeys and a champion steeplechaser, riding as jockey to the Queen Mother. Queen Elizabeth), Dick Francis wrote his first book, an autobiography (The Sports of Queens), which led to a job on a London newspaper as a racing correspondent. In 1982, he published his first mystery book that dealt with crime in the horse-racing world. Through a publishing career of nearly 40 books, Francis’ wife, Mary, was his researcher, proofreader and biggest fan.

Mary died in 2000 and Dick, heartbroken, virtually gave up writing. Six years later, their son Felix talked his dad into writing again and they collaborated on Dead Heat. Herein, is my review of this book.

Synopsis of Dead Heat

The main character in Dead Heat is Max Moreton. Max is locally known as a celebrity chef, enjoying success in his horse-racing themed restaurant in Newmarket called The Hay Net. Max also frequently caters special meals at nearby racetracks. His troubles begin when he caters a dinner at Newmarket races where dozens of guests end up with food poisoning. Max cannot figure out what went wrong.

But, that incident was just the beginning of Max’s problems. The very next day, he caters a VIP lunch in one of the special boxes at Newmarket races, and he is nearly killed in an explosion. It suddenly becomes time for Max to start trying to figure out what is going on and why it seems as though someone is trying to kill him.

Summary

The clever plot of Dead Heat has some interesting and some quirky characters (there is the laughing lawyer for one) and a romantic interest between Max and a beautiful viola player from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London who originally starts out to sue him! In addition, the reader gets to enjoy the ambience of the world of haute cuisine

I enjoyed this first collaboration of Dick Francis with his son Felix. The team went on to publish 3 more books together. Since Dick’s death at age 89 in 2010, Felix Francis has continued on in the same vein, writing horse-racing mysteries.

Review of The Writer-James Patterson

James Patterson Review

I am a big fan of James Patterson novels.  I have enjoyed his books for years and follow several of his series of books, always looking forward to the newest book.  While looking through his newer books from the library, I came across one that came out earlier this year.  It was co-written with J.D. Barker and in reading the description on the cover I was very curious about the book.  The cover has the claim "You'll Never Forget the Ending".  I decided I needed to read that book and I was not disappointed.  The book keeps you guessing on who the killer is the entire book.  I thought I had it figured out several times, but boy was I wrong.  In the final chapters of the book there is a real twist that I would have never guessed.  Wow! What an ending!

Book Summary

The book starts with Declan Shaw, a NYPD detective standing in a subway train station contemplating throwing himself overboard, when he suddenly gets a call sending him to the scene of a murder.

The scene is in the home of a award winning novelist and her doctor husband.  The husband has been stabbed, and the wife is standing over him in bloody clothes with the murder weapon.  At first glance it is an open and shut case, but then nothing is what it seems in the rest of the book.

We are introduced to Declan's partner, his lieutenant, the wife's attorney and many more possible suspects. There is also another case of a woman in a nearby alley that plays into the picture.  In addition, there are some doubts about a prior case that Declan and his partner worked and the suspect was found guilty and is in jail.

There are so many twists and turns that I hate to give anymore away.  I will tell you this is a very compelling book and once you get into it, it is hard to put down.  I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a fascinating murder thriller.
