This has been the year of traversing through senior pet products and many trips to return items as well. The senior pet product market has definitely expanded with a plethora of products. After searching for pet heating pads, the almost 6000 positive reviews caught my attention for the K & H Self Warming Crate/Heating Pad.
This is a thin pad covered with microfleece and sized to standard crates, but can be used as a stand alone item. I paired the pad with an orthopedic bed.
Does The Pad Work?
Yes, it does. It generates a very gentle low level warmth.
Why I Like This Pad Over A Pet Heating Pad?
I did try and return an electrical pet heating pad. Not because the pad did not work, but because I had concerns regarding the necessity of supervision I felt necessary with a heating pad even with auto turn off features.
I prefer the Self Warming Pad with no need to find electricity. This makes the pad very portable. The pad is already sized to common crate sizes and is washable. Owners also report the pad works wonderfully for cats and laps.
The price point is reasonable and what is interesting when reading the comments and reviews are the number of people who bought the product for their pet and after seeing how well the pad worked, returned to purchase another for them! Great Idea!

Tiger Toes ? My first thought was what a cute name and my second thought was... I hope these work!
Tiger Toes are grip socks for senior dogs to help with traction for joint, age, mobility issues. The grip design is patented and effective to assist traction particularly on hardwood or tile floors.
Do They Work?
Yes, absolutely. However, each dog is unique as to why additional traction is needed and how much- I'm sure we'd all like more but the increase in stable footing is noticeable/
Design
These socks were designed with the dog and owner in mind! If you have every tried to put dog boots on then the struggle can be huge. Last winter was so cold we had no choice in my area then to put boots on the dogs for their protection.
Tiger Toes is a combo of traction like boots, but the material is lightweight. Because the socks have grip on each side and by design can be twisted and still usable; the socks are much easier to put on each leg. The width of the sock is also forgiving vs the narrow boot.
The socks do extend up the leg with a velco fastener. I found the fastener was not really necessary and appreciated the lack of zippers, buttons, sticky patches which can be hindering or stick to fur.
Twist Factor
One of the best features is the sock can rotate or twist around the foot and not only works, but does not constrict the dog. I have found with boots many times one boot will twist backward and well... that really annoys the dog (we wouldn't want to walk around with one shoe backward!!)
Washable
Yes, the Tiger Toes are washable.
Sizes
The toes come in medium, large, extra large. Medium works on my medium sized dog. After a few looks at the Tiger Toes, he has adjusted quickly.
I was admittedly skeptical after trying a few products to help with senior dog mobility with mixed results. It can take a few tries with dogs and aids to find one that fits the dog and fits the problem.
I found the Tiger Toes delivered as promised at a very reasonable price point for the product. My only wish is that an extra sock would be included cause... just like human laundry, there can be a black hole for socks!

Tile floors and hardwood floors can be quite problematic for your dog as age
advances and mobility decreases. Or perhaps your dog is recovering from
surgery and needs a temporary mobility aid to navigate the home. Dr. Buzby's
toegrips is a product I've always had bookmarked as a possible aid to try.
Toegrips are designed by a vet to ideally assist older dogs with traction and
mobility. The toegrips are little rubber sleeves which slide on each
nail.
Installation
My first thought looking at the size of the grips was whoa! The installation
could be very challenging if you dog is not cooperative as many dogs have
issues with alot of handling of paws and feet. I knew my dog would be
cooperative, but even with a very cooperative senior dog, the installation was
a little cumbersome at a minimum.
The opening of toegrips are very small and it took me three times to
find the size for my dog. The sizing chart was incorrect for my dog; however,
that is usual as well. It was easy to return and exchange.
The toegrips are soaked in alcohol per instructions and then "slid" on the
nail. The instructions provided are very specific and easy to follow but it
was tedious so bring patience. There are 20 toegrips per package and reviewers
report the grips are long lasting before replacements are required.
Did The Toegrips Work?
This would be subjective I believe for each unique situation. I believe the
toegrips help from my experience. Traction definitely improved and to date all
toegrips remain from the original installation.
Price
These are not inexpensive. Price is subjection, I do think if this is the
product that works great for your dog and its' mobility, then the price will
be paid without a blink, I don't know if I've seen the prices vary too
much if all all. I'd like to see a lower price point or more in the package
for value, but again, very subjective.

Prior to adopting our puppy, Watson, it had been many years since we needed
a back seat "container" for a dog. Our senior dogs were perfectly
content to lay down on their car beds and ride comfortably. Watson, on
the other hand, is a very active puppy. Laying down in the car, or
sitting in someone's lap, is absolutely out of the question for our baby
dog. Therefore, we went in search of a solution.
We wanted something that would keep him in the back seat, but allow him to
move around. Because we have captain seats in one of our SUV's, we
need something that would hold his weight in between the seats even when he
is full grown.
The back seat extender we selected crosses both seats, covering the gap
between them. That allows Watson to lay down, walk from window to
window, or stand in the center. The front flap of the extender, covers
the back of both front seats and has a restrainer section in the center that
he can see through, but not walk through. That keeps him safely
contained in the back seats of the car.

I discovered holiday Milk-Bones last Christmas while shopping for a special
treat for our puppy. I was thrilled to find treats as a special gift
for our baby dog. With Easter approaching, I searched for Easter
Milk-Bones and was elated to find an adorable box of Easter Peeps! I
immediately purchased a box. When they arrived, I couldn't make myself wait to give our
baby dog his new treats.
I opened the box and the smell was so wonderful it made me want to start
munching on them. Watson, our puppy, came running! He was quite
tempted by the smell too and immediately stuffed his little "big nose" in
the box.
Like the Christmas Milk-Bones, he has a preferred shape. The Easter
Peeps have bunnies, chicks, and bone shaped Milk-Bones. Watson prefers
the bunnies, which I think is hilarious. I just don't know why the
bunnies (which are long shapes) instead of the round-ish chicks, appeal to him. Now,
whenever he minds me, he immediately sits down by his Easter Peeps awaiting
his reward.
Now, please don't tell Watson, but I have already purchased two more pails
of Easter treats for him to get on Easter. I plan to have a Easter
Milk-Bone hunt. I am sure my little active companion will love a fun
hunt for Milk-Bone Easter Peeps.
The Easter Peeps come in a pail with an adorable picture on the front,
which appeals to the humans. Our puppy loves the taste and the smell of his marshmallow flavored
biscuits.
The pail is durable enough that it could be refilled and used for original Milk-Bone biscuits. It is lightweight and has easier hand access than the standard Milk-Bone rectangle box packaging. It also has a handle for carrying which would make it very convenient when traveling.
Needless to say, the Milk-Bone Easter Peeps and their box are a hit with both parents and their babies. Oops, I mean doggies.

If you have a puppy, you know! Finding a ball should seem like an easy purchase, but each ball and each puppy are indeed unique. The challenge to find a ball the puppy likes, cannot destroy and keeps the puppy busy for more than a few seconds is real!
After a few purchases that were fails. And fails mostly because this little puppy is also a tough little chewer; who knew such teeny tiny teeth could pierce even rubber toys advertised as tough enough!
A Winner
This ball fits the assignment for this puppy! Light enough for the puppy to toss, roll, bounce and play with or without a person. The ball is very gentle on hard floors and bouncing off furniture. While advertised as a puzzle ball which could contain treats, the holes are fairly big so the treats would need to be hole sized. We found success by putting a smelly treat in a wad of crumpled paper and leaving the paper in the ball.
The treat did fall out, but the Holee Roller ball now has a sound with the crumpled paper which the puppy loves also.

I recently discovered Milk-Bone Holiday Treats for puppies! I was so
excited to find these adorable treats for our new puppy. He deserves
something special for the holidays, just like everyone else.
The Milk-Bone holiday treats come in a collectible, reusable tin. The
treats themselves are shaped like stockings, Christmas trees and dog bones
with "engraved" hearts. They are also colored in green, red and the
bones are the traditional brown. Perfect for a special gift for a

Our puppy is 15 weeks old and he received his Christmas Milk-Bone treats in

Another fun game for the humans in a puppies life would be to guess the count

When we recently decided to bring home a 10 week old puppy, my husband went shopping for puppy toys immediately. Much to his delight, he discovered there are Kong Wubba toys made just for puppies. Of course, he brought a small Wubba home for our puppy to celebrate his first day with us.
We have now
found that puppies love a small Wubba as much as older dogs love big Wubbas.
Like human babies, puppies are precious, beautiful and easily
lovable. Puppies are also high energy and require a lot of playtime,
which means a multitude of size/age appropriate toys. If you don't
provide the toys, they will find play pretties everywhere around your
home. Things like cords, socks, couch cushions, shoes, shoe laces,
shirt buttons, or anything within their reach is too attractive for them to
ignore.
Keep in mind, puppies, like babies, are teething and they need to be
chewing on something constantly. Just looking around my kitchen, you
might think I am spoiling our new puppy because he has at least 8 new toys
suitable for puppy chewing on the floor. When he tires of playing with
one, he will grab a different one and chew until he tires of the feel of it
in his mouth. If he gets too bored, toes could easily become his next
prey and those sharp, little teeth are truly like needles sticking you in 5
places at once.
His first toy turned out to be his favorite toy. A brand new puppy-size
Wubba! It squeaks, it has flappy tails, and it makes the best catch
toy.

Years ago, I purchased our first BarksBar pet padded front seat cover for
my 2 door car so our mature golden retriever could sit in the bucket seat
next to me.
Like most pups, she never wanted to be left behind and she enjoyed riding
the few blocks to my parents house to visit. Because it is a two door
vehicle, getting her in the backseat was hard on both of us. I moved

It has been my experience that "waterproof" fabric may claim to be washable, but it doesn't maintain it's waterproof properties after washing without reapplying a waterproof spray or wax. Therefore, I will opt for a tightly woven fabric that is naturally water resistant. If needed, I could put a waterproof disposable pad under the BarksBar seat cover. Thus far, the additional pad has not been necessary for damp paws or slight incontinence.
The built-in rubber non-slip backing helps hold the seat cover in place. Even when my 95 lb pup would leap into the seat, the cover did not move.

The West Paw Toppl is my and if I may speak for The Fluff as he is affectionately known, new favorite treat dispensing puzzle!
Oh dog toys, dog puzzles, dog thingamyabobs, I have known and bought a few. Some are winners, some are losers and some fall in between. I know the loser toy look from the Fluff, the disdain, the side eye, the this is not acceptable. I will humor you and flip it around, but do not expect any further consideration.
And you know when a dog puzzle or toy is a winner! It is the same toy they go back to time after time, squeak after squeak and slobber after slobber. Now design wise all the dog toys and puzzles may be a winner, but the key is to find one your furball considers worthy.
West Paw Toppl
A diet change and chew bone change precipitated my search for a combo food dispensing toy for the Fluff. The Fluff likes to chew and it has been very difficult to find softer and natural bones that last more than 2 minutes.
I have a team of Kongs stuffed with dog food, peanut butter and yogurt in the freezer, but the Fluff can conquer those quite quickly. And experience has shown when the Fluff has not satisfied his need to chew, the Fluff can turn back to his puppy ways which is just not fun!
The local pet store recommended the Toppl and it has been a success so far. A combination puzzle and food dispenser that provides a good diversion for energetic pups.
Design Of The Toppl
I believe the difference and probably why the Toppl lasts so much longer than the frozen Kong is the grid inside and on the bottom of the Toppl. It definitely takes the Fluff longer to empty the Toppl than a Kong. Which for my purposes is the point!
I stuff the Toppl with his canned dog food and then freeze. I use this in place of the chew bone he used to get after dinner. So far the Fluff is happy (okay, not quite as happy when he had a bone), but the combination soft dental chew plus the Toppl is making the diet and routine change a little easier.
The Toppl can also be stuffed with a combination of dry food, treats, vegetables and soft food or yogurt and then frozen.
Recommendation
Adding the Toppl to the team of Kongs to keep the Fluff safe and happy.
Bonus the Toppl is also made in the United States. It also floats on water, is dishwasher safe and BPA and Phthalate Free.

The Agility Obstacle Course
Dog agility is the running of an obstacle course. The sport originated in the late 1970's in England. There have been many organizations through the years as the sport has evolved; the goal of the organizations were shared, though the rules and obstacles slightly differed.
Years ago when agility was a relatively new sport I enrolled in a dog agility class. The difference between the backyard agility equipment and professional equipment is size. As you can see from the video below of a professional agility competition the obstacles are BIG!
Backyard agility obstacles are smaller, portable and easy to assemble. The starter kits are easy to set up, store and all you need is grass! The agility kits are easily transported so if a backyard is not available any nice sized section of grass will work.
The Beginner Backyard Agility Sets
Staples in a backyard agility kit are the jump, tunnel and weave poles.
Tunnel
The tunnel is usually one of the first obstacles to teach your dog. A few treats and encouragement and the tunnel can be easy to master for the confident dog. As with every new activity a little practice goes along way and the dog will give you cues as to how comfortable they are with the tunnel.
I have seen very skittish and less confident young dogs who at first look at the tunnel as a looming foreign object turn into tunnel loving runners with the right encouragement and practice.
Jump
The jump is adjustable and can be set very close to the ground to begin acclimating your dog to the desired height. Dogs who love to run and jump can take to the jump quite quickly. I happen to have a dog who loves to jump so the jump was quickly mastered and the height could be increased.
To teach and acclimate the dog to the jump you can see in the photo below the dog is on a leash and I am gently guiding the dog through the jump with a treat in hand ( why the dog is looking to my hand).
Last Fall we had a few doggie buddies over for backyard fun.
The three Amigos
Within a few minutes of practicing individually we put the medium size dogs sitting at the start line and were amazed as they took off together taking the jump in unison!
It was a race to the treat and the owners.
Because of size, as one of the three amigos was only six pounds, she was an observer while the two medium sized dogs navigated the obstacle course, and we practiced with her separately.
She enjoyed watching and learning from afar however!
Weave poles
Weave poles can be tough! Where my dog took to the jumping very quickly, the weave poles not so much. The poles are set up for the dog to zig zag - weave in and out in a straight line. We are still working on the weave poles, but in the spirit of this is purely for fun, I think the pup and I have decided ... no on the weave poles.
But weave poles are alot of fun to watch. The video below shows a full sized Agility Course and look at those pups weave!
Sit stay box
This is a great exercise , especially for younger dogs, to practice sit/stay and down/stay. The “box” is either a marked area in a box or an actual raised solid box.
The dog either enters the box or jumps up on the box and does a sit/ stay or down/stay for a set number of seconds. If training a young dog, this exercise works right into practicing sits and stays.
Dog Personality
Of course it is imperative the personality and physical capabilities of your dog are of the greatest importance when considering agility obstacles. Dogs of any age, breed or height can participate in dog agility. The obstacles are 'sized' to the dog.
Age: Agility courses are not for puppies as their growth plates must be fully developed. Obviously this varies per breed, per dog. Pre agility exercises such as the sit stay exercise are pup friendly.
Does your dog love to run ? Try new things? Enjoy activity? Loves to figure out a puzzle? Agility may be a great fit.
Is your dog apprehensive to try something new but with proper training enjoys a new activity ? Agility could be a great confidence booster !
Backyard agility can just be plain ole good fun for the owner and pet. No need to compete, just enjoy the obstacles your dog likes and making a home agility course provides great exercise for you and your pet.

It is spring allergy season. And our allergies are raging this year. I'm struggling. And poor Willy, my dog, is struggling. This is always a rough time of year for him. Fortunately, I have found something that helps alleviate his eye irritation. Willy has very sensitive skin. Every year we struggle with his allergies. He looks like he has mange, we go to the vet and get him tested, and we learn that it's allergies. Willy gets itchy and scratches until he loses patches of hair. Shampoos and creams alleviate some of the body itching. However, his eyes are often extra sensitive. When his eyes are itchy, he ends up rubbing the hair off from around his eyes. It is very difficult to treat a pet in areas near their eyes. The creams and shampoos that provide the most itch-relief are usually not safe for use near their eyes. The prescription eye cream from the vet is the only other thing that is safe for use on and in the eyes - and it is expensive and comes in a very small tube. It runs out very quickly.

Because of his allergies, and my frequent rubbing him down with something-or-other, Willy hates for me to approach him with any cream, spray, or gel. Hates it. I have to follow him to catch him. I typically take him to the bathroom to decrease the chance of his escape before I am able to administer whatever it is I have to administer. But, when he sees me with this little blue bottle he dances around and whines. He wants to avoid me and yet he wants the relief in his eye. It's easy to see by the way he dances around, finally approaching me with his head down, that the Vetericyn provides relief. I keep Vetericyn eye gel on hand for poor Willy's itchy eyes. But even if his allergies end some day (fingers crossed that day comes), I will always keep a bottle on hand for as long as I have pets. Vetericyn is a brand I've come to trust.

My little furball is in love with his new friend Whimzees
Dog Treats! I am in love that I found a dog treat my dog can actually eat due
to his new friend the low protein dog diet. Whimzees brand of dog treats are actually all natural dental
treats so one a day is the recommended serving.
All Sizes All Shapes
One of the fun features are the different sizes and shapes
of Whimzees. Every dog has their unique preference of the size and shape of a
dog treat and then there are those dogs which are generalists. My dog is a
generalist; not necessarily picky, but does prefer the chew stick or chew round
as the first options.
Low Protein All Natural Dog Treat
Unfortunately due to a tangle with bladder stones my dog had
to be switched to a low protein menu which included low protein dog treats and
chews. The treats were not an issue as I had always restricted the types of
treats; but taking away the favorite dog chew was a huge issue!
The Fluff (as I call my dog in jest, as he is not a wash and
wear type dog and needs to be groomed and fluffed!) absolutely without
hesitation indicated that a daily chew was a necessity.
The Search For A Low Protein Dog Chew Or Snack
It was very difficult to find any dog chews that were
"low protein" as defined by under 15-20% protein content. When I was
roaming up and down the treat aisle at the local pet store I lucked into one of
the employees who was also a dog nutritionist. I was reading the ingredients of
Whimzees and as we together went through the ingredients the dog nutritionist
explained each ingredient and its' benefit. The Whimzees Vegetable Sausage is a
dental dog treat so the Fluff eats the stick quickly, but is very satisfied.
Switching From A Protein Dog Chew To Whimzees
It was absolutely no problem to switch to the Whimzees Dog
Treats. I chose the Vegetable Sausage as it was a chew stick and suitable for
the size of the Fluff. The Fluff approved immediately and is a happy little
chewer with the added bonus of helping to keep his teeth clean and his breath
fresh.
Whimzees can be purchased in variety packs of different
shapes or a pack of the same type of dog
treat. I began with the Vegetable Sausage and next time will order the variety
pack for small dogs for a change of pace. Dog owners seeking a grain free treat will love Whimzees too!
