Weiman Cook Top Cleaning Cream Review

Last month, I reviewed The Best Cookware for a Glass top stove. Now, I'm reviewing Weiman cooktop cleaning cream for a must-have spotless stove top.

Weiman cook top Cleaning Cream

We have been using Weiman cooktop cream since we got a glass-top stove. After cooking a delicious but messy meal, you know the struggle of spills and greasy splatter. This product has definitely earned a spot in our kitchen, keeping our glass-top stove clean and shiny.

Weiman cooktop cream is designed specifically for glass and ceramic stovetops, making it effective at tackling the most common problem: burnt-on residue.

One of the biggest concerns of glass-top stoves is scratching. The formula is gentle enough to protect the surface while delivering a thorough clean and shine.

You can buy Weiman with cleaning pads or simply use paper towels to apply it. We prefer using the cleaning pads; they work better for us. It's easy to use, just apply the cream, then wipe with a paper towel.

Cooktop after cleaning

Here is our stove top after cleaning it with Weiman. Tip: One thing we have learned is to let your stove top cool before trying to wipe it clean. For a really tough, burnt-on spill that just won't clean up, I use a razor blade to carefully, gently scrape it off. Weiman Cook Top Cream leaves a glossy finish that makes your cooktop look new.

Best Gifts for Puppies Reviewed

Gifts for Puppies
We recently brought home a puppy and immediately started buying puppy appropriate gifts for the little fellow.

One might think immediately of puppy food and a dog bed when you first get a puppy.  Of course, we did bring home a puppy bed and food.  However, we immediately realized he needed teething toys.  We started with one that we knew would be a wonderful toy since our adult dogs have always loved them.  But, let me tell you, one is not enough!  He currently has 8 teething toys that he has in various locations.  The one he prefers apparently depends on his mood.

For training, we also needed Milk-Bone biscuits, Mini Pure Bits (liver) and Quaker Apple Cinnamon Rice Crisps.  Our vet recommended the rice crisps years ago because of their lower calories.  A lot of treats are required for training!

A fleece blanket also makes a great gift!  My mother purchased our little puppy a Christmas fleece blanket that he received immediately.  He loves that blanket!  Most often, he lays on it on our leather couch, but he can drag it down to the floor when desired to make a impromptu bed.

We already had a ramp, which the puppy will use as an adult to "walk" himself up into the back our our SUV.  It is extremely important to start that training early by placing the ramp against a couch and letting them naturally climb it to get onto a couch.  We discovered the hard way that an adult dog may be afraid to climb a ramp regardless of offered treats.

A doorway gate may not "feel" like a great gift idea.  However, I assure you, not only are you protecting your furniture and home decor, you are protecting the puppy from cords or falling items after he runs into an end table.  I'm sure you get the idea.  We can't watch them constantly, therefore, they should not run free through an entire home heedless of potential dangers.  Puppies are full of energy and running is exactly what they prefer to walking.

Believe it or not, I would also suggest Johnson's Baby Shampoo for a puppy's gift.  Again, that was also recommended by our vet for a puppy.

A few weeks home and these are the "gifts" for puppy that we have found essential.  With Christmas upon us, it seemed like the best time to recommend gifts for puppies (or dogs) if they happen to be on your gift list too.

All of the above mentioned gifts are featured below and linked to either a previous review or to a store for purchase.

Puppy Chew Toys Make Great Gifts

As I said, these toys will most likely become what you want to get first and continue to add to the collection over time.  You realize quickly that your furniture, bedding, beloved stuffed animals, and even your skin need to be protected from puppy chewing and teething.  The best way to prevent damage is to offer a chew toy that is made for that purpose.

35 years ago, our first puppy turned our kitchen chair legs into gnawing posts.  While it is funny to recall now when my husband refers to the puppy "toothpicks", it was definitely not funny when it happened.

Of course, you still must train yourself to say "no" since puppies, like any baby, will continue to test your patience and tolerance.  Having a desirable option is in everyone's best interest.

With human babies in mind, I bought a few teething toys that can go in the freezer to make a cold chew toy for our puppy.

We have always been familiar with the Kong products and know from experience that they are fabulous.  However, my cousin brought Watson (our puppy) a Outward Hound bone.  He loves that bone!  Therefore, I would highly recommend it too.

Treats for Puppies

We all like special treats for the holidaysPuppies may not recognize special days of the year, but we do and we like gifting our baby dogs with special treats for special occasions.  Milk-Bone brand recognizes our desire for special treats and they make fun shaped dog biscuits just for the holidays.  Plus, a Christmas fleece blanket always makes a puppy happy and we appreciate the added Christmas "decor" in our home.

Our adult dogs have always appreciated their annual fleece blankets from their granny.  We use them year round in the cars, on hardwood floors, or wherever that little bit of comfort for our puppy is needed.  After all, we don't mind a touch of Christmas spirit throughout the year.

More Gifts for Puppies

I mentioned the necessities like the gate, the ramp and the shampoo for puppies.  For Puppy parents who do not have these items, they would be greatly appreciated.  The parents, themselves, may not recognize their importance until they start using them, but time will prove out how much they are truly needed.

Christmas Delights for Young and Old ~ A Product Review

Christmas is that one time of the year when sights and sounds seem to be everywhere!  Some of them evoke strong memories in young and old alike.

There is nothing like the smells of Christmas baking, gingerbread houses, sugar cookies decorated to tingle the senses and a host of other "seasonal decorations" that just make you smile all over.

One of these little decorations had my "tech-savvy" grandchildren mesmerized for quite a while and each year, they look for that decoration and enjoy it's slow and steady movement.  All without the need of any tech or batteries!

Each Christmas when I bring out this decoration, I can't help but smile and recount those little faces watching this windmill turning on it's axis and listening to Christmas carols in the background.

My little windmill came to me from a trip I took to Iceland, but I'm so happy to see a very similar one here that you can purchase to add to your Christmas collection.  There is just one caveat that must be noted!  This is not a decoration that can or should be played with.  It does involve a candle and fire, so little hands must stay away and parents need to monitor their children around this decoration.  The smile on the little faces is worth the extra effort to keep it in a safe place.

These windmills and similar ones make a lovely tabletop decoration that will last for years.  Enjoyment comes from watching the movements of the hanging ornaments.  I have found a spot for mine that doesn't even require that the candle be lit!  Just the air currents in the home keep my little snowflakes spinning!

Christmas tabletop decor

On a cold winter night, with Christmas music playing in the background, these little dancing snowflakes make a nice cozy spot to contemplate the Christmas message and find a little peace in a rather rushed and frenzied time of year.

For your pleasure and also for your choices of designs, I have included a link for all of the windmills available.  Some have stars, others have reindeers or nativity scenes.  Some have chimes and others not.  Each one is beautiful and your tastes may be somewhat different than mine so with that in mind please take a look for yourself and find the one that "speaks" to you!  Just click the link where it says WINDMILL CHRISTMAS !

I'm wishing all of you some quiet, contemplative time to enjoy all the sights, the sounds and the meaning of Christmas to you!

Reviewing Warm Fleece Bedding Perfect For Winter and Gifting

Fleece Bedding Stack in grey and soft pink

Why We Love Fleece Bedding in Winter.

We have just started to use our winter fleece bedding. Most of the spring and summer we use our bamboo bedding exclusively but when it suddenly turns cold in autumn and winter  we need something warmer and cosier.

We love getting into a warm, cosy looking and feeling bed. There is no sheet shock or coldness at all and it feels so comforting. I always sleep so well in our fleece bedding. Sometimes its all fleece with both a fleece bottom sheet and quilt cover, other times we have the fleece bottom sheet and bamboo quilt cover, depending on the weather and how we feel. I always feel so incredibly warm, cosy and comforted in fleece.

The Fleece Warmth Factor

Fleece bedding is lovely and warm and  keeps us cosy with just the winter quilt. We find we rarely need any additional blankets on the top. As we are trying to save on heating bills which are now very expensive, it really helps to have a lovely warm bed. It really came in to its own when the temperature suddenly dropped last week and we were cocooned in warmth and slept really well. One of the best aspects is that when you first get into bed there is no cold sheet shock. It is warm and cosy from the very start.  Personally I don't find i overheat in fleece bedding as we usually only use it in winter and am glad of the gentle warmth.

Fleecy Softness

I am very sensitive to textures and fabrics and allergic to many chemicals. So i have to go for materials that are soft to the touch. Fleece bedding is lovely for me as it feels gentle and soft against the skin. So if you have sensitive skin it might be something to consider. I always wash bedding before using in order to make sure anything they have used in the process is washed out with my sensitive washing powder.

Fleece Bedding with soft white toy

Colour and Pattern

Fleece bedding is available in many different colours. I’ve seen everything from gentle whites, soft neutral greys, pretty pinks and florals to fun festive tartans and muted greens and blues. We recently bought two sets one a very gentle muted pink and one a dark warm grey.

Easy Care Fleece Bedding

I always check the label or instructions before buying, but the fleece bedding sets we use go straight in the washing machine at 30 degrees, which makes life easier. It is generally tumble dry or line dry and no ironing! Either way I find it generally dries quite quickly. I love that there is no need for ironing and often labels say no iron which is great as one less task to do. In my experience it doesn't have an issue with wrinkling or creasing and looks great on the bed. This is ideal when busy, if you dislike ironing like me or find it difficult. It is brilliant to just wash, dry and back on the bed!

Gifting Fleece Bedding

I would always be super happy with any fleece bedding as a gift. I also love giving it as a gift.  The only thing you really need to know is the persons size of bed. I have bought fleece bedding for family members in the past and it has always been well received. We often had it on the spare bed when our family came to stay and they loved it, which was a good indication they would appreciate it as a gift. I usually buy safer colours for gifts so white or cream or other calm neutrals like light grey or taupe.  Otherwise if its for your own household or you know a person or couple are open to different colours, there is usually a great variety to choose from including brights, florals, patterns and themes. It strikes a great balance between being very practical and useful but also quite luxury, so perfect for gifting!

In the colder, harsher months I love to create bedroom sanctuaries with warm cosy fleece bedding, safe flameless candles or fairly lights and lovely pillows, quilts and cushions. It is a real cosy treat for yourself or a loved one. The only problem you might have is if you are like me getting out of bed in the winter mornings!

Favorite Gadget Reviewed: Electric Pruning Shear

This years' favorite gadget purchase is a tie!  It was a close race between a few contenders, but the Kebtek Cordless Pruning Shear lands in the top two gadgets purchased this year.

favorite gadget

Which begs the question as to what product did the Electric Pruning Shear tie with ? The Cordless Leaf Blower which is another household favorite with the split vote of which product wins best purchase of the year.

Power

I found the shears very powerful. Powerful enough to cut through medium size tree branches with ease. The small size of the shears hide the amount of power generated.

Operation

One safety feature is the shears do not cut continuously without pushing the button to engage. So if a branch needs four cuts that would be four times the button must be pushed; mentioning for those with tender hands.

Charging

One of the best features of the Kebtek Pruning Shear is the inclusion of two batteries and the very smartly designed charging unit. The convenience of having two batteries charged and ready to go really makes this unit a stand out. Competitors charge additional for a second battery. The batteries are 2ah rechargeable lithium.

Storage Case

A hard sided plastic storage case comes with shears for easy storage. The case has a handle for carrying and is slim so can quickly be stored in narrow spaces.

Gift Idea

This is definitely on the list for the gift a homeowner didn't know they needed! But will love the gift and appreciate your kindness to make their gardening and DIY lawn maintenance so much easier and maybe more enjoyable too!

Milk-Bone Holiday Biscuits Treats for Dogs and Puppies Reviewed

Milk-Bone Holiday Biscuits Treats for Dog
I recently discovered Milk-Bone Holiday Treats for puppies!  I was so excited to find these adorable treats for our new puppy.  He deserves something special for the holidays, just like everyone else.

The Milk-Bone holiday treats come in a collectible, reusable tin.  The treats themselves are shaped like stockings, Christmas trees and dog bones with "engraved" hearts.  They are also colored in green, red and the bones are the traditional brown.  Perfect for a special gift for a special dog or puppy.

Our puppy is 15 weeks old and he received his Christmas Milk-Bone treats in the specialty tin, the day after Thanksgiving.  He loves them and we love the size.  They are small enough for even a puppy to enjoy.

I'm not sure if I will save the tin just for Christmas use, or if I will refill it with regular puppy Milk-Bones when it is empty.  I do know I will reuse the decorative tin for doggy treats.

The tin is available for a limited time only.  I hope that means the Milk-Bone brand will continue to have an annual tin.  What fun they would be to give each year for Christmas to all of our puppy friends.

The Milk-Bone Holiday Treats

The shaped Milk-Bones in this tin are suitable for all ages, from puppy to senior.  I wasn't sure if the shapes would matter to the pups or simply entertainment for us, but I have noticed that our baby dog seeks out the red stockings.  Will that continue?  I don't know, but it makes for a fun doggy game to see which one of the 3 shapes he will choose first.

  • 12 Vitamins and Minerals

Another fun game for the humans in a puppies life would be to guess the count of treats in the holiday tin.  We did count ours just for fun and discovered there are/were 148 treats in our puppy's 24 ounce tin.

Thank you Stickers, Variety

Welcome to Thank you Stickers, Variety. Here you will find options for Thank you stickers for a variety of occasions. You can choose from floral, holiday themed, plain and simple designs, and more.

stickers

Thank you stickers are a great way to show extra appreciation for a gift, a job well done, for attendance at a wedding, performance, etc., and or for making a purchase from one's shoppe, and so much more.

I know that I like receiving appreciation and giving it as well. How about you?

Without further ado, here is a sample of one of the designs.

This two ferns design features two wispy ferns serving as the border, for the Thank you message. The text can be personalized if you like, as they can on many of these Thank you stickers.

The stickers come in a choice of two sizes; 1-1/2 inch and 3 inch. You can buy them by the sheet and or by the roll. You can choose from glossy white and or the matte finish on both sheets and roll options. If purchasing by the sheet, you can also select from various shapes: star, oval, heart, rectangle, and triangle.

If purchasing by the roll, you can also choose from various finishes, including satin white and silver gloss. The ones with the extra finishes options are also tear resistant and may be water resistant. You can read more about these options here: Stickers-on-roll-review.

Any of the sticker designs can be ordered by the sheet and or roll options. I have found that when I clicked on a shape option other than square or circle, that the only way to purchase those stickers were by sheet only. Again, the sheet option only comes in the glossy or matte paper finish.

Here is a link to the collection of the various sticker designs. The Thank you is already there, and should be easily customized if you choose. Some can be used for a variety of occasions, such as birthday, wedding, for teachers, and more.

If you don't find a design that you're looking for, come back to this page and share your design request in a comment below. If I am around to do it, I will respond to your comment within 24 hours. I can do general colors, but no color matching. Do allow a couple of weeks for the design to be made, and also allow for the shipping time from Zazzle; so it will be best to have three to four weeks from the date of your request and when you need it.

Thank you.

Stickers on a Roll - Review

Zazzle has now expanded their offering of stickers. You can now order stickers on a roll.

stickers

Along with that option is the addition of four more options for the material that the stickers are made of. I will highlight the main features of the new materials that are offered. The new materials are only offered when the stickers are purchased on a roll. The original sheet stickers only come in the two options of glossy white or matte white paper. However, any of the designs currently offered on sheet stickers, can be ordered on a roll to be able to choose from the new options.

The stickers on a roll also come in the original offerings of the glossy white and matte white paper. The new offerings for stickers on a roll include: clear synthetic paper, white gloss synthetic paper, white satin synthetic paper, and silver gloss synthetic paper.

The Clear Synthetic Paper is transparent and tear resistant. It is glossy polyethylene and is water resistant. It is also heat resistant. It also has UV-light resistance.

The White Gloss Synthetic Paper is designed for high resolution with vivid colors. It is made from polypropylene (BOPP) and is also tear resistant.

The White Satin Synthetic Paper is made from polypropylene and is also tear resistant. It has a white satin finish. It is resistant to moisture and solvent exposure, and is recommended for when durability and long term adhesion is required.

The Silver Gloss Synthetic Paper is made from polypropylene and is coated for dye based inkjet inks. This sticker is also tear resistant and has a silver metallic finish. This sticker is approved for incidental food contact, however it says that a functional barrier is required. This isn't just any barrier, the barrier needs to provide a specific function, i.e. keeps air and water out.

Like the sheet stickers, the sizes offered are 1-1/2 or 3 inches for the stickers on a roll. The sheet stickers come in a choice of various shapes, including star, heart, oval, rectangle, and triangle. Both stickers on a roll and sheet stickers come in a choice of circle and square shapes.

Some of the benefits of using stickers on a roll, besides the various material offerings, are the ease of compact storage, and streamlined application of applying the stickers - especially when using a dispenser. The stickers are wound on a three inch core to be compatible with dispensers. A dispenser is not included.

I have ordered stickers multiple times from Zazzle, and have always been satisfied with my purchase. I personally haven't purchased any of the new options, but I do like that they give good recommendations on the new materials.

Here is what the stickers on a roll look like.

View the various sticker designs in my CherylsArt store on Zazzle.

Reviewing the Pentel Arts GraphGear 1000 Mechanical Pencil and Premium Gift Set

The best gift ideas come from the recommendations of people who spontaneously tell you about an item they use and love. This happened a couple of weeks ago when my friend told me about his Pentel GraphGear 1000 mechanical pencil. My friend is artistic and he is also familiar with which tools folks that work in engineering and drafting depend on. While showing me his GraphGear 1000, he also produced an old Pentel mechanical pencil that his Grandfather used. That they have used these pencils over generations are a glowing review alone.

Pentel Arts GraphGear
the Pentel Arts Premium GraphGear 1000 set on Amazon

Pentel Arts GraphGear 1000 Premium Mechanical Pencil

Online information about the Pentel GraphGear 1000 Premium Mechanical Pencil:

  • superior drafting pencil; tip length is for use with rulers and templates
  • dual-action retractor to advance and retract lead; avoiding lead breakage
  • soft, latex inlaid metallic, chiseled grip
  • Pentel's Super Hi-Polymer lead sizes: 0.3 mm, 0.5 mm, 0.7 mm and 0.9 mm size lead available

The Boxed Set of Four GraphGear 1000 Includes:

  • 4 Mechanical pencils, in 4 different colored barrels
  • 4 lead refill tubes (1 tube of each size)
  • 4 eraser refills

(Currently on Amazon with a 4.8 out of 5 stars rating resulting from over 2,200 reviews!)

If you are hesitant about buying this boxed, gift set there are many options for purchasing just one Pentel Mechanical Pencil at a time. Which is what I am going to do for myself. I am constantly looking for a pencil. when I do find it, the lead needs sharpened. Now that I realize mechanical pencils can be used across decades, I have decided that I need one in my life. I am partial to the one with the light, bright blue grip.

My Personal Thoughts

Some of the students I work with, prefer to use mechanical pencils for their personal reasons. I have tended to think of mechanical pencils as inexpensive and semi-disposable. What quickly caught my eye about my friend's GraphGear 1000 mechanical pencil with the beautiful chiseled markings on the metallic pencil grip. It was clearly not a disposable pencil.

My friend showed me the difference in appearance between the lead sizes; thin to thick. He also talked to be about the differences in lead softness/hardness (H, HB, and B) and how that appears in drawings. The gift set I am reviewing comes in the HB level of hardness. There are other lead refills and pencils that can be purchased in the H and B levels. (note: there are other levels of hardness, but we did not go that in-depth in our discussion).

While writing this review, my friend and I looked up information on his Grandfather's mechanical pencil. The pocket clip carries a stamp "SKILCRAFT". By doing a quick search, we learned that Pentel mechanical pencils began in the 1960s, and the SKILCRAFT version was produced during that time. His Grandfather's pencil is also stamped "U.S Government" and was likely obtained during his work at Bethlehem Steel all of those decades before. The history of this Pentel pencil shows to me that these pencils can be passed down through the generations.

Desk Jockeys: A Healthy Gift They'll Actually Use — Highly Recommended

Desk Jockeys: A Healthy Gift They'll Actually Use — Highly Recommended

Healthy Fitness Gift Idea: Why I Keep Recommending the Cubii Under-Desk Elliptical

I've Written About This Before…

I might sound like I'm rinsing and repeating. Still, I've written multiple articles about the Cubii Under-Desk Elliptical — my first review was in 2021, then another in 2023, and most recently in April 2025 — and I still stand by it.

With the holidays coming up, I wanted to share this as a healthy fitness gift idea that is worth every penny.

A Gift That Became a Daily Habit
My mom gave me the Cubii back in 2021, and it's been part of my daily routine ever since. I honestly can't imagine working without it. Even as I type this, my feet are pedaling away. It's small, simple, and makes moving while sitting feel entirely natural.

Quiet, Smooth, and No Maintenance
One of the things I love most is how perfectly it's built. No squeaks, no grinding, nothing to oil or fix — it's just ready to go every time. You can pedal while working, reading, or watching something without anyone noticing. It's like having a little workout tucked under your desk, quietly getting the job done.

Gentle on Joints, Big on Benefits
Standing for extended periods isn't easy for me because of arthritis, and regular exercise bikes can be uncomfortable. The Cubii is low-impact and easy on the joints, so I can pedal for hours if I want, or just take it easy on tougher days. It keeps me moving without the pain, which is priceless.

More Than Just Exercise
Since my mom passed, using it is a little reminder of her thoughtfulness. It's a practical, useful gift that also carries sentimental value. Every time I pedal, I think of her, and it adds an extra layer of meaning to something that's already incredibly helpful in my daily life.

A Gift Anyone Will Appreciate
For anyone spending hours at a desk — writers, remote workers, students, or someone who just likes sneaking in extra movement — the Cubii is a winner. It makes staying active effortless, reduces the guilt of sitting too long, and is a gift that keeps giving long after the unwrapping.

The Bottom Line
After years of daily use, I can say with complete confidence: the Cubii Under-Desk Elliptical is one of the best gifts I've ever received. It's reliable, quiet, and makes healthy movement easy.

If you're looking for a thoughtful, practical, and truly useful gift this holiday season, this is it.

And yes — I'm pedaling as I write this!

You can find the Cubii here on Amazon, where available. This is a quality product.

Reviewing Ten Effective Ways To Reduce High Home Humidity

Window with condensation

If you feel that the humidity in your home is high or you know for certain as you have used hygrometers to check, there are some effective measures you can take to reduce it.

High humidity is generally considered to be above 60%. In most homes the aim is to have humidity at a healthy level or 40-50%.

Humidity that is too high is damaging to our health and the fabric of our homes so it is very important to address it.

Some Of The Indicators Of High Humidity Are:-

  • Visible mould around windows, in corners and behind furniture
  • Visible mildew which may be white , green or black
  • Peeling wallpaper or peeling bubbling paint
  • Walls that feel damp or wet to the touch or where you can see damp areas with colour discolouration on walls.
  • Black mould
  • Windows that are dripping with water or have condensation, we frequently had this occur in our home before we took measures
  • A muggy feel to the air. We did sometimes experince this.
  • A damp smell in your home
  • Wooden furniture or flooring that is warping or in the case of floors a squeaky floorboard or two.
  • Signs of pest activity or seeing the pests themselves as creatures like silverfish love humid environments
  • Clothes that feel damp when you take them out the wardrobe or draws
  • Anyone in the house who starts developing typical allergy symptoms- coughing, sneezing, skin rash - as it may be a dust mite allergy. Dust mites thrive in humid conditions and love to live in mattresses, carpets, rugs, sofas and curtains and even clothes. My husband started to develop these allergic symptoms.
  • You have a hygrometer to measure humidity and it is consistently showing above 60% humidity. Once we bought a hygrometer it showed that we were living in humidity generally between 55% to 75% depending on the room, so it was too high.
  •  I reviewed hygrometers in my previous article Reviewing The Benefits Of A Home Hygrometer To Monitor Humidity

Risk Factors For High Humidity

  • You dry wet washing in your home on an airer or over a radiator. This was a big issue for us as from November to March there are few days when i can get washing out on the line in the garden. I don't like running a tumble dryer very often as it is incredibly expensive, so indoor drying was the only option. I never dried over a radiator as I knew that heavily contributed to the central heating needing to work harder, but we did use an airer frequently.
  • You don't put the heating on much or at all. This was another issue for us, since the cost of energy has become significantly more expensive we do try to put the heating on for only short periods at key times for example before going for baths or showers and first thing in the morning when the house is often cold down to 12-14 degrees in winter.
  • You close off some rooms in your home and do not heat them. We don't do this as I think it just makes matters worse, but we do know many people who do.
  • You rarely open windows or have extractor fans on. We don't have extractor fans but every morning that it is not raining or snowing we open the windows in all rooms for a minimum of 10 minutes, longer if possible without allowing the house to get too cold.
  • You have a naturally humid home like ours with solid brick walls and double glazing
  • You live in a humid climate either at particular seasons or year round

Measures You Can Take To Reduce Humidity.

1. When cooking cover pots and pans with lids, use an extractor fan or open a window for a during and after cooking. We do cover pans with lids and always have a window open unless it is blowing a gale or heavy driving rain.

2. Showers. When showering keep the bathroom door closed and the extractor fan on or open a window during and for a while afterwards, at least 10 minutes, to allow steam to escape outside. We always do this to prevent steam from escaping into the rest of the house.

3.Open windows.  On days it is not raining open the windows for a while, even 10 minutes helps to circulate fresh air. I was raised to do this, even in freezing cold days i recall my parents going around opening all the windows to let stale air out and fresh air in and I have continued that practice.

4.Trickle vents.  If possible it is useful to install trickle vents on air bricks to improve the flow of air

5.Seal any leaks or gaps around windows and doors. This was more of an issue for us before we installed double glazed doors which have solved that problem.  If you suspect any roof issues get a reputable company to check your roof for any leaks and if so have them fixed. Keep guttering clean and free from debris and check downpipes are working well.

6. Buy passive moisture-absorbing materials like silica gel or baking soda. I have found that these do not make a huge difference in bigger rooms but can be more effective in smaller spaces, cupboards and wardrobes. We have them in smaller spaces and understairs cupboards where we cant use a dehumidifyer.

7. Houseplants including the beautiful peace lily and easy to care for spider plant. I have read the claims that these plants can help to naturally absorb water thus helping with high humidity. However it is important not to overwater houseplants as otherwise the standing excess water  will only contribute to raise humidity. We have both these plants in our home. I cannot tell how much direct influence they have on our humidity levels but they are lovely plants and we are happy to have them. I would not however, rely on houseplants to lower humidity. Do be aware that many houseplants contribute to humidity levels though. I still love them in our home.

8. When washing clothes run them through an additional spin cycle appropriate to the clothing, to squeeze out a little more water before drying in an airer inside. This can make a surprising difference to how damp they come out of the machine. If you can get them outside on the line for a while, or can afford to run the dryer for 10-20 minutes that too will help.

9. Buy an air conditioner.

If humidity is an issue in warmer months an air conditioner may help. We don't have an air conditioner so I can't comment how effective it is, but if you have one it would be worth testing  running it with a hygrometer in the same room to see how it affects humidity levels.

10. Buy a Dehumidifier

To be fair if you have consistent high humidity in your home the most effective method is to buy a dehumidifier or even two depending on the size and layout of your home. A dehumidifier actively takes moisture out of the room thus combatting the source of the problem. In our home we do all the measures, but the dehumidifier is the one that made the most significant difference and fairly quickly. We have one upstairs and one downstairs. We have two large dessicant dehumidifiers and a small thermo electric one, which suits us as they can still operate in lower temperatures and meet our laundry and home needs. We find the smaller one is good for small rooms or for maintaining a humidity level though not quite as powerful at brining the level down. There are also compressor dehumidifiers. These machines are available in different sizes and powers for different needs. It is important to research carefully the one that will suit your home and needs.

Here are just two examples of dehumidifiers

When we first started using the dehumidifiers the water container filled up very quickly and we would need to empty it several times a day. At first the hygrometer showed that the machine was doing its work and brought down the humidity , but when we stopped using it for a few hours, the humidity rose again.

After a few weeks we noted we did not need to empty it so often and that the machine brought that humidity down and it did not rise again so fast. I think this is because we had extracted the deeper levels of moisture that was likely in the mattress, sofas and curtains.

Now we can have them on a lower power setting and they still keep the rooms to humidity 40-50% humidity and fairly stable at that which is about right for us and our home.

So in our experience anyway if you do have high humidity your dehumidifier will need to work hard at first and you may need to empty it more often and keep it on for longer with the humidity up and down a bit. However, over time this will settle and you may be able to operate the dehumidifier for longer without needing to empty and on a more lower power maintenance level.

The exception to this of course is when drying laundry. We put our clothes on an airer and place the dehumidifier nearby and always on "Laundry mode" in a closed room. It is important to keep clothes well spaced out on the airer to allow airflow. I find with our more powerful  machine, that I can mostly dry damp clothes overnight on a good laundry mode setting.

It is important to close windows when using a dehumidifier as otherwise your machine will be working hard to dehumidify the world !

When we bought a hygrometer our dehumidifying efforts were much more effective, as we then knew which areas and rooms to target to lower humidity. So I would recommend buying at least one hygrometer.

So from my experience the most effective way to deal with a home that has too high humidity is to do small simple measures like keep the shower or bathroom door closed when taking a shower, cover pans when cooking , make sure there is good ventilation, especially in the kitchen and bathroom. Let fresh air in every day it is not raining or blowing  gale, use a hygrometer so that you know your humidity and use a dehumidifier.

I have to say that buying our dehumidifiers was the best thing we did as our home is now so much more comfortable, clean air, no condensation on the windows, no damp and my husbands allergic reactions have ceased completely.
