Once again, Detective Maggie Price and her consultant, Henry Ross,
investigate a restaurant related murder in the Hallmark Mystery Series,
"Gourmet Detective". Each episode is a stand-alone movie, but clearly
we are also watching a relationship develop between Maggie and Henry
throughout the series.
Henry Ross is a chef that has been dubbed the "Gourmet Detective" due to
his excellent observation skills. Previously, he helped the detectives
when he witnessed a murder and proved quite knowledgeable about food
poisoning, as well as the people in the restaurant industry. He is now
an "official" consultant to the homicide department.
Henry is not too thrilled when one of Maggie's ex-boyfriends, who also
happens to be a detective, shows up on the current crime scene. It is
obvious Detective Steve Miller would like to rekindle their relationship and
Maggie seems somewhat receptive to the idea. After all, they have
known each other since their college days and he was also there to help her
through the difficult times that followed her divorce.
Part of the fun of watching this series, is watching the expressions on all
of the other actors faces. They do an excellent job of showing their
thoughts without saying anything.
Maggie talks to Steve as Munro, Bailey & Henry watch the
interaction
Restaurant owner, Leo Triviano, was first attacked by an intruder in his
kitchen pantry. A week later, he survived being shot, but was later
murdered in the hospital. Of course, his longtime friend, Henry Ross,
wants to find the killer.
Henry knew Leo had a problem with his head chef, Mateo Durand, which would
make him suspect #1 in Henry's opinion. However, that certainly would
not explain the first intruder encounter since Mateo would always have
access to the kitchen pantry. And, exactly what was the intruder
looking for in the pantry?
When a letter is found in the shredder, it seems it must be related to the
murder. Otherwise, why would anyone destroy an old letter. Once
the letter is put back together, it is still not clear until they realize
there must be something important hidden in the words of the letter.
The investigation leads them to some surprising discoveries and
suspects. Just how many secrets did this family have?

The movie takes us on a lighthearted journey as Emma tries to undo the mess, only to find that love has a funny way of surprising us all.
A Quality Cast - Check Out the Talent
Uma Thurman shines as Emma Lloyd, bringing her signature blend of grace and comedic timing to the role.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan is wonderfully charming as Patrick Sullivan, the fireman with a mischievous streak who manages to win Emma's heart and the audience's. I'm a fan of Jeffrey Dean Morgan, which made the cast even more appealing.
The quality supporting performances by Sam Shepard and Isabella Rossellini add depth and humor to this delightful film.
Why I Enjoyed 'The Accidental Husband'
What I loved most about "The Accidental Husband" is that it's a light, clean movie that offers a much-needed escape from the negativity and darkness that often dominates today's world.
While the plot may be predictable, that predictability is part of its charm. Sometimes, it's nice to watch a movie where you know things will work out in the end, and this film delivers that satisfaction.
If you're in the mood for something that will make you smile, laugh, and forget about the stresses of everyday life, this is the perfect pick. It's an easy, enjoyable watch that left me feeling good, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to relax with a fun romantic comedy.

I have really been enjoying the Hallmark Mystery Series, the Gourmet
Detective. Last week I reviewed the pilot movie of the series where we
first met Detective Maggie Price and the "Gourmet Detective", Henry
Ross.
When forced to work together to solve a murder, the duo provide a light
touch of comedy with their snippy comments to each other.
The murder in this movie takes place at a gourmet convention. Of
course, Henry is already attending and has two rooms, but it turns out
his assistant is unable to go. When he offers one of Maggie's
co-workers the option to take his assistant's "already paid for" room at the
conference, he ends up getting roped into taking Maggie instead.
Maggie's police captain believes it will provide the perfect opportunity for
Maggie to take a much needed and earned vacation. Henry offers the
room to Maggie and she somewhat reluctantly agrees to go when she is assured
they would not be going as a couple, just in tandem to the same place.
There is no way either of them could know one of the other conventioneers
will be murdered. Once again, Henry is immediately involved because he
is the one to see the body floating in the mineral baths from his
balcony.
Kathleen Evans is a magazine writer who doesn't hesitate to reveal nasty
personal information about the notable people she features in her
articles. She previously taped an unflattering video that she shared,
along with her article, on a popular actress and convention guest,
Danielle Stark. When aired, that article and video had cost Danielle
her acting contracts for 3 years.
Kathleen's tenancy to tell all, makes her a very unpopular attendee,
especially after Danielle publicly confronted her at one of the convention's
meet and greet events. When Danielle stormed out of the room, the
confrontation continued when Danielle's agent took it up, demanding that
Kathleen leave the convention.
It comes as no surprise that Kathleen is the murder victim.
Identifying the killer is much harder. Both Detective Price and Henry
Ross witnessed the confrontational scene which initially gave them their
first set of suspects. But, that would be too easy!
Be sure to watch how Henry Ross uses his skillet in this episode. It gives any cook a new appreciation for their cookware. It is close to the end of the movie, so you will need to watch the whole movie to see his unique cookware skill.

Released in 2010, Letters to Juliet is a romantic drama that captures viewers' hearts with its blend of love, adventure, and nostalgia.
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Verona, Italy, the movie follows the journey of Sophie, an aspiring writer who stumbles upon a 50-year-old letter addressed to Juliet Capulet.
This letter, written by a woman named Claire, sparks a quest for a long-lost love that has been dormant for decades.
The Cast: A Talented Ensemble
The movie features an ensemble cast that brings the story to life with charm and authenticity.
Amanda Seyfried stars as Sophie, the inquisitive and hopeful lead who embarks on a journey of discovery.
The legendary Vanessa Redgrave joins her as Claire, whose poignant portrayal of a woman seeking closure resonates deeply with audiences.
One of the most enchanting aspects of Letters to Juliet is its setting.
Filmed in the picturesque countryside of Italy, the movie transports viewers to a world where romance feels tangible.
The story's connection to the legendary tale of Romeo and Juliet adds another layer of depth as it explores the timeless themes of love, fate, and second chances.
The Perfect Soundtrack
Taylor Swift's mega-popular hit song "Love Story is the theme song for the film's trailer, adding to the movie's romantic atmosphere.
The song's lyrics and melody perfectly capture the essence of the story, making it an ideal choice to set the tone for what unfolds on screen.
Why I Enjoyed the Movie Letters to Juliet
I enjoyed the movie Letters to Juliet for several reasons.
The cast, led by Amanda Seyfried and Vanessa Redgrave, delivered heartfelt and relatable performances.
The gorgeous setting of the Italian countryside added a sense of magic to the story, making it feel like a true escape.
The romantic premise, inspired by the tale of Romeo and Juliet, was captivating and emotional.
Perhaps most importantly, the film's exploration of lost love and the idea of second chances struck a chord, especially with older viewers who may have experienced similar feelings in their own lives.
All these elements combined create a movie that is enjoyable and reflective.
I Have My Own Story of Lost Summer Love
Perhaps I relate to this movie mostly because I have my own personal Romeo and Juliet story.
In 1978, when backpacking through Europe for two months, I experienced unforgettable summer love that is still frozen in time to this day. I wrote about it here if you're curious.

If you enjoy an intriguing mystery combined with a hint of romance, then
you will love the movie, "Gourmet Detective".
Currently, the Gourmet Detective Hallmark series offers 5 episodes.
However, today I will only be reviewing the pilot movie of the series where
Detective Maggie Price meets the "Gourmet Detective", Henry
Ross.
Price and Ross first encounter one another when Henry is filling in as the
instructor of a cooking class. Maggie is there on a date. She
immediately takes exception to Henry's nickname, the Gourmet Detective, and
shows annoyance when he exhibits his ability to read people and know things
about them based on observation.
From the very beginning of the movie, it is clear a restaurant is being
sabotaged. It is impossible to know if the timing of the sabotage is
due to the health inspector's upcoming visit or if it is to run off
customers. Either way, when roaches and rats are released in the kitchen,
it is obvious someone wants to shutdown the restaurant.
However, a murder at dinner is rather extreme and unexpected.
When the Gourmet Detective is asked to help figure out who is sabotaging
the Duquette Restaurant, he readily agrees to help out his friend. At
an exclusive dinner, one of the guests is murdered and Henry (the Gourmet
Detective) is a witness. In order to avoid being considered a suspect,
he agrees to work with Detective Price to offer his food expertise and insider
information.
Mostly due to Maggie's confrontational and combative attitude with Henry,
he has to work harder to be friends with her. She reluctantly allows
him to cook for her and her family while working on the murder case
together.
Eventually, their relationship becomes more comfortable as they work
together to find the identity and the reason for the murder.
I did not suspect the real murderer until the two "detectives" found the
incriminating evidence which made this a fun mystery movie to watch.

Even though the movie was released in 2017, I just finished watching "The
Zookeeper's Wife" and I suspect it will haunt my mind for a long time to
come.
I use the word "haunt" for several reasons. First, there are some
scenes that I found very hard to watch. Actually, I closed my eyes for
fear of what they would actually show. As it turns out, there really
wasn't anything too graphic to view, but my mind's eye had no problem
filling in what the filmmakers graciously left out.
Second, I had trouble believing parts of it. I won't go into detail,
but I would be interested to hear if you had the same reaction if you watch
the movie.
And last, but not least, was the obvious question of what would I do, what
would any of us do, if faced with the same decisions.
It is for that last reason that I would recommend this
movie.
When I picked up this DVD to watch, I chose it because the images on the
cover looked so "precious". I had no idea I was about to watch a movie
based on a true story, on real people, and events in Warsaw during
WWII.
In real life, the Żabińskis were recognized by Yad Vashem (The World
Holocaust Remembrance Center in Israel) as "Righteous Among the Nations" for
their heroic actions and saving hundreds of Jews. The Warsaw Zoo is
still in operation today.
Antonina Żabińska was the zookeeper's wife. The couple had friends from a
variety of backgrounds and nationalities. Antonina had one admirer,
Lutz Heck, who would play a big part in the survival of the zoo and
unwittingly help them with their ability to "hide" and transport Jews to safety.
Knowing in advance that the Germans would be moving into Warsaw sooner or later, Antonina
refused to leave her husband, her home and the zoo animals. As a
result of that decision, she and her son became an integral part in caring for and
sheltering the Jews that arrived at the zoo.
Not long after the occupation of Warsaw, the valuable zoo animals were transferred to the
Berlin Zoo in Germany by their "friend", Lutz Heck. Under the guise of
raising pigs for the German soldier's meals, the zoo was allowed to remain
open and became the perfect hiding place. However, there was much danger in the day to day operation and not everyone could be saved.

This movie is science fiction, so if you're into a creative approach to science fiction, "Lucy" hits the mark. With its imaginative storyline and top-quality cast, it's earned five stars from me! I've watched this movie about ten times.
"Lucy" is a 2014 science fiction action film directed by Luc Besson. The movie follows the journey of a young woman named Lucy, played by Scarlett Johansson, who inadvertently gains superhuman abilities after a powerful synthetic drug is absorbed into her bloodstream. Lucy discovers she can manipulate time and space as her brain capacity increases, gaining extraordinary cognitive and physical powers.
The Plot and Themes
The central theme of "Lucy" revolves around unlocking the human brain's full potential. The film starts with Lucy being coerced into working as a drug mule. The drug she carries, CPH4, is accidentally released into her system, leading to a series of transformative events. As her brain capacity increases, Lucy's abilities grow exponentially. She acquires knowledge instantaneously, develops telekinetic powers, and even gains control over matter and time.
The movie explores profound philosophical questions about the nature of human existence, intelligence, and evolution. It delves into the idea of what humanity could achieve if we could tap into our minds' unused potential, a concept that has fascinated scientists and thinkers for centuries.
The Cast
The film boasts a talented cast that brings its intriguing story to life. Scarlett Johansson delivers a compelling performance as Lucy, capturing her character's transformation from an ordinary woman to a being with god-like powers. Johansson's portrayal of Lucy's journey is intense and captivating, making her character's evolution believable and engaging.
Morgan Freeman plays Professor Norman, a leading researcher in brain capacity and cognitive function. His character provides crucial insights into the story's scientific and philosophical underpinnings. Freeman's authoritative presence and thoughtful delivery add depth to the film, making the scientific concepts accessible to the audience.
Choi Min-sik, known for his role in "Oldboy," plays the ruthless drug lord Mr. Jang. His menacing performance adds a layer of tension and danger to the film, providing a formidable antagonist for Lucy to confront as she navigates her new abilities.
Why I Loved the Movie "Lucy"
"Lucy" captivated me by exploring the human mind's untapped potential. The film's premise that we only use a small percentage of our brain capacity has always intrigued me. The idea of what we could achieve if we could access 100 percent of our mind's capabilities taps my curiosity.
While "Lucy" is undeniably a work of dramatic fiction, it tackles this intriguing topic in an entertaining and thought-provoking way. The movie seamlessly blends action and science fiction, presenting a narrative that is as intellectually stimulating as it is thrilling.
In conclusion, "Lucy" is a film that entertains and inspires contemplation about the future of human evolution and the mysteries of our brains.
Its combination of a gripping storyline, strong performances, and profound themes makes it a movie that I love and recommend to anyone interested in the human mind's potential from a science fiction perspective, of course!

The Lake House is a captivating romantic drama that weaves together the lives of its two main characters, Kate Forster (played by Sandra Bullock) and Alex Wyler (played by Keanu Reeves), through a unique and enchanting time travel narrative.
Directed by Alejandro Agresti, this 2006 film is a remake of the South Korean film Il Mare and brings a fresh twist to the romantic storytelling genre.
The Storyline
The story begins with Kate Forster, a doctor, moving out of a beautiful lake house in 2006 to pursue a new job in Chicago. As she leaves, she writes a letter to the next tenant apologizing for some paw prints by the door and leaving it in the mailbox. Alex Wyler, an architect, receives the letter—but he is living in 2004.
Initially confused by the letter’s references to events that haven’t happened yet, Alex replies, and the two start a correspondence through the mailbox, which mysteriously bridges their two time periods.
As their letters continue, Kate and Alex form a deep emotional connection, sharing their hopes, dreams, and challenges in their respective times. Despite being separated by two years, their bond grows stronger, and they fall in love. They also face the frustrations of their situation, yearning to meet in person but thwarted by the temporal divide.
Alex decides to renovate the lake house, making it a sanctuary for their love, and leaves clues for Kate to find in her present time. They try to set a date to meet in the future, but complications arise, including a tragic accident that threatens to derail their plans.
The suspense builds as they struggle to overcome the barriers of time, leading to a climactic and heartwarming resolution that reinforces the power of love to transcend all obstacles.
The Cast and Performances
Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves deliver heartfelt performances that anchor the film’s emotional core. Even though they share very few scenes, their chemistry is palpable through their written exchanges. Bullock portrays Kate’s vulnerability and resilience with grace, while Reeves brings depth and sincerity to Alex’s character. Their performances make the improbable premise believable and moving.
Cinematography and Setting
The lake house itself is a character in the film, with its serene, picturesque setting providing a perfect backdrop for the unfolding romance. The cinematography captures the beauty and tranquility of the lake, enhancing the film’s dreamlike quality. The contrast between the bustling city life and the peaceful solitude of the lake house underscores the characters’ desire for connection and escape.
Themes and Messages
At its heart, The Lake House explores themes of destiny, timing, and the enduring nature of true love. It raises questions about the role of fate in our lives and whether love can truly conquer all obstacles, including time itself. The film’s narrative invites viewers to ponder the idea that some connections are meant to be, regardless of the circumstances.
Why I Love The Lake House
The Lake House holds a special place in my heart because of its romantic time travel element. It reminds me of the 1980 movie Somewhere in Time, starring Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve. Coincidentally, Christopher Plummer is featured in both of these movies.
The idea of two people separated by time but united by love is magical and poignant. The film beautifully captures the longing and hope that come with waiting for the right moment and the belief that love can bridge even the most impossible gaps. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most extraordinary love stories are written in the present and across the sands of time.

"An Unfinished Life" follows the story of Einar Gilkyson, a Wyoming rancher portrayed by Robert Redford, whose life is shadowed by grief and guilt following the death of his son.
Estranged from his daughter-in-law, Jean (played by Jennifer Lopez), and his granddaughter, Griff (Becca Gardner), Einar lives a solitary existence until Jean unexpectedly arrives seeking refuge.
As Jean and Griff settle into Einar's home, old wounds resurface, forcing all three to confront their painful pasts and find a way to heal their fractured family bonds.
Set against the majestic backdrop of rural Wyoming, the film unfolds as a poignant narrative that can resonate deeply.
Setting the Scene of An Unfinished Life: Wyoming's Landscape
The rugged beauty of Wyoming serves not only as a picturesque setting but also as a metaphor for the characters' emotional landscapes. Hallström's direction captures the vast expanse and raw beauty of the countryside, enhancing the film's exploration of inner turmoil and external resilience.
Characters and Relationships
At the heart of "An Unfinished Life" are its compelling characters: Einar (played by Robert Redford), a stoic rancher haunted by past tragedies; Jean (Jennifer Lopez), his estranged daughter-in-law seeking refuge; Griff (Becca Gardner), Jean's daughter caught in the aftermath; and Mitch (Morgan Freeman), Einar's loyal friend and moral compass.
Their intertwined lives unfold with layers of unresolved conflicts and deeply rooted emotions. These complex feelings resonate with all of us in one way or another.
Themes Explored
The film navigates through themes of forgiveness and redemption with grace and nuance. Einar's journey towards reconciliation with Jean and Griff serves as a focal point, highlighting the transformative power of forgiveness in healing old wounds.
The narrative also delves into the complexities of family bonds, portraying love, loss, and resilience amidst adversity.
Gorgeous Cinematography
Lasse Hallström's directorial prowess shines through in his portrayal of emotional depth and character development. The use of sweeping cinematography not only captures the grandeur of Wyoming's landscapes but also underscores the characters' internal struggles and personal growth. Each frame seems crafted to evoke empathy and contemplation— for me, especially contemplation.
Impact and Reflection
"An Unfinished Life" leaves a lasting impact on viewers, prompting introspection on themes of forgiveness and the unfinished aspects of life. It encourages audiences to reflect on their own experiences of healing and renewal, resonating long after the credits roll. The film's narrative poignantly reminds us that life's unfinished moments offer opportunities for growth, redemption, and the forging of deeper connections.
Why I Loved This Movie
In conclusion, "An Unfinished Life" transcends the boundaries of a conventional drama, offering a profound meditation on the human spirit's capacity for forgiveness and starting over.
Through its richly drawn characters and evocative storytelling, the film reminds us that while life may present us with unfinished chapters, it also allows us to rewrite our stories with courage and compassion.
A healing movie, for a time that needs much healing (in my opinion).

As Royal and his family try to understand the nature of the void, they encounter various obstacles and adversaries, including rival ranchers and enigmatic figures like Autumn.
Conflict and Resolution
The series balances its supernatural elements with grounded, human conflicts. The Abbott family faces external threats from those who seek to exploit the void for their own gain, as well as internal struggles as they deal with personal loss and trauma. Each episode peels back layers of the mystery, offering new clues and raising more questions, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats.
Themes of Faith and Fate
At its core, "Outer Range" explores themes of faith, fate, and the unknown - with that unknown being time and space. The inexplicable phenomena surrounding the void constantly challenge the characters' beliefs. The series delves into existential questions about the nature of reality and human existence, making it a thought-provoking watch.
Conclusion
"Outer Range" is a compelling series that pushes the boundaries of traditional genre storytelling.
Its unique blend of Western elements and supernatural intrigue offers a fresh and engaging narrative that keeps viewers hooked from start to finish. The strong performances by the cast, particularly Josh Brolin and Lili Taylor, add depth to the characters and elevate the storytelling.
Whether you're a fan of mystery, drama, or the supernatural (time travel), "Outer Range" is a series that promises to captivate and leave you pondering long after the credits roll.
As the mysteries of the void continue to unravel, one thing is sure: "Outer Range" is a journey worth taking.
After completing Season 2 (released this year, 2024), I eagerly await and hope for a Season 3!

MbgPhoto recently published her review of the
Cozy Mystery Genre
and that made me yearn to watch a new cozy mystery movie.
I suspect I
have always enjoyed cozy mysteries but didn't really know the proper
category to search until I started reading reviews on ReviewThisReviews and
learned the name of the genre.
I've never liked gory thrillers or horror films, although I have watched many of them in my
lifetime, even reviewed a few over the last decade, but I have always loved
a good mystery. Thus the reason I love
Sherlock Holmes
and
Poirot. While I have not found anything comparable to Poirot or Sherlock, I have
enjoyed some great cozy mystery movies.
I was
drawn to this movie because of the time period setting. I love the
Gilded Age era fashion. However, I would be the first to admit, I do
not admire the "classes" of that era or the way workers were trampled on
so the elitist class could get richer, faster. I do have to suspend
reality to enjoy some fiction and I did enjoy watching the Gilded Newport
Mysteries.
Gilded Newport Mysteries: Murder at the Breakers Synopsis
Emma Vanderbilt-Cross is the niece of Cornelius Vanderbilt and the daughter of a Vanderbilt who married below her station. Emma is not an heiress to any of the Vanderbilt money, but is still included in society as a Vanderbilt. She prefers to remain unmarried, at least for a while, as she considers her options. She enjoys writing articles for the "Fashions and Fancies" women's section in the Newport Observer newspaper, which pays the bills. She would love to write a novel, but she realizes that would bring scandal upon the Vanderbilt family.
She
has been invited to a ball being given for her cousin at the
Vanderbilt's summer home, The Breakers. Emma is determined to include her half-brother (her father's son before he married her mother) and takes Brady to the ball as her guest.
Unfortunately, when her uncle's business advisor is murdered at the ball, Brady appears to be the murderer. Of course, it would not be a great mystery if everything was so obvious and I will admit, I was surprised to find out the identity of the real murderer.
A very entertaining mystery indeed! And, a touch of romance just for fun.
A Note About The Breakers Mansion - Current Day
"The Breakers" is in fact the name of the Vanderbilt mansion in Newport, Rhode Island. It was the real Cornelius Vanderbilt II's summer home. It is now a museum that is owned and maintained by the Preservation Society.
