Winning the Endgame ~ A Book Review

Jamie Lee Curtis on Anti-aging
Get used to it, the Population of the world is aging and aging quickly.  Let's clarify, it is still aging one day at a time, but there aren't as many young ones coming up in the ranks to fill our shoes and our responsibilities to our family's and society as a whole.

Gone are the days when your children would look after you when you were no longer able to do it yourself.  Today we need to make our own plans for what our future looks like and there is no better time to start than right now!

Aging is something that we really don't give too much thought to.  It's a topic that really doesn't interest us until we are at that "AGE" when our bodies and maybe our minds start to slip a little.  \

I can remember vividly during my 40's and early 50's never needing a phone book!  I could remember peoples' faces and names and yes their phone numbers as well.  Then all of a sudden one day I could not remember a friend's phone number that I would have called at least twice a week.

What was going on with me?

It was time to take a good hard look at the aging process and understand what was happening to my mind as well as my body.

No one has the magic pill that will keep these things from happening to us, but we can and do have tools that will make life (and aging) that much easier.

First and foremost, get used to writing things down.  You will NOT remember! ( Or you might remember two weeks later )  Get used to it!

Don't give in though!  Reading and using your mind to do puzzles, crosswords, math problems like SUDOKU, will help to keep your mind sharp.  So don't just sit back and let nature take it's course without giving it a hard time.  Using the brain cells will help to keep it active.

Join some groups that will teach you new skills.  Maybe something that you have been wanting to do for a long time, but never had the opportunity or time to pursue.  Painting, quilting, needlepoint, card playing, fitness classes ( for seniors of course), sitting in on some university courses or listening to podcasts on any topic you enjoy, will help to keep your mind and even your body moving.

Take the time to do some reading about aging, what to expect and how to win at the "End Game"!

We will all do this at some point in our lives, so let's do it our way!

This book might be the help you need to get you started!

winning the endgame

With a little humour and lots of honesty, this time in your life could be the best that ever was!  Winning the Endgame is an easy read and just might get you on the road to looking at the rest of your life with open eyes and a willingness of spirit.

May we all live our lives well and smile at everything that we have experienced during our voyage around the sun!

Reviewing The Forgetting by Hannah Beckerman

Reviewing The Forgetting by Hannah Beckerman
The Forgetting by Hannah Beckerman was a beautifully crafted book and a real page-turner. It is about two women and they tell their stories in alternating chapters. Let me tell you about them; first, there is Anna who we meet when she wakes up in a hospital bed in London and has amnesia. She doesn't even remember her husband, Stephen.

When Anna is discharged to move home it's like her house is a stranger's home. Stephen takes her to a few places that they used to frequent, but it doesn't jog any memories. She really can't even enjoy her favourite novels. She is feeling trapped and quite disorientated in her life.

The author writes so well that you can feel Anna's frustration at not being able to remember. I also didn't like her husband Stephen and felt very suspicious of him. I was glad when she met a new friend as her life was so insular and it seemed strange that there was no one except Stephen to help her remember her past.

Next, we meet Libby who is a new mum to baby Leo and is looking at returning to work. She lives in Bristol and is close to her parents and sister and is newly married to Dominic. Her husband is definitely gaslighting her and I will admit to being frustrated at her blind loyalty to him. I really wanted to shake some sense into her!

Dominic's controlling behaviour did make me think that his stories about his parents were probably not the whole truth and I was looking forward to getting to the bottom of that mystery when his mother turned up. The book was so well written that I got extremely agitated when he put his career ahead of Libby's chance at a promotion - I wanted to reach into the book and tell her to snap out of the spell he had over her!

I absolutely loved this book and couldn't put it up until I was finished. I did guess the twist, but it took me a little longer than it generally does.

I was very happy to see that Hannah Beckerman has written other books and I'm keen to read them too. Have you read The Forgetting or any of her other novels?

This book came up as recommended for me in my Kindle Unlimited subscription and I thoroughly recommend downloading it when you have a few hours free, curl up with your favourite cup of tea, grab a snack (like these delicious protein cookies) and enjoy!

The Law of Moses by Amy Harmon Book Review

A newborn was abandoned in a small town laundry. He was left in a basket and found on the verge of death. His story made the news and he was named Moses. Unlike the biblical babe left in the basket and placed in the river, this Moses was a crack baby. Crack babies, due to being exposed to drugs before their birth, are expected to have many physical and mental difficulties. In some ways, Moses followed a similar trajectory as many children born with drug exposure and with absent parents.  He was passed from home to home, had difficulty in school, and was thought to have seizures and hallucinations. However, he is also very different than those similar children in a way that can either be considered a blessing or a curse - depending on how you look at it.

The Book of Moses written by Amy Harmon

"People love babies, even sick babies. Even crack babies. But babies grow up to be kids. Nobody really wants messed up kids."

I was lost in Amy Harmon's The Law of Moses. From the prologue that warned of heart-breaking loss to the last few words I was hooked. I fell in love with Georgia and Moses. We join their lives as they are in their senior year of high school.

Moses eventually comes to live with Kathleen, his great-grandmother. He is turning 18 and will be aging out of the system. He is a very talented mural painter, painting his graffiti where he shouldn't and he sometimes knows people he shouldn't.  Kathleen lives next door to Georgia's family and has made arrangements for Moses to work on their farm.

Georgia was the youngest child, born years after her own siblings. But she had grown up with many children as her parents were foster parents. As the story begins, her family is running an equine therapy program. While Georgia has seen Moses previously, during his visits with Kathleen when he was younger, this is the first time she's getting to know him. Or trying to get to know him. While most everyone else is suspicious or afraid of Moses, Georgia is drawn to him. But he's one of those "troubled" kids that most people avoid. Even the horses want to remain far from him. But Georgia can't stop herself.

"Whatever it was, when Moses came to Levan, he was like water-cold, deep, unpredictable, and, like the pond up the canyon, dangerous because you could never see what was beneath the surface. And just like I'd done all my life, I jumped in head first, even though I'd been forbidden. But this time, I drowned."

The story continues over the next several years as Georgia and Moses go through some very difficult times, with and without each other, moving into adulthood. They are faced with adult problems and adult decisions.

My review does not do this story justice. I almost didn't write a review because I cannot describe it adequately without spoilers. Amy Harmon's writing is beautifully descriptive. It is easy to imagine the horses, scenery, and breath-taking murals. The characters are unique. Georgia and Moses are independent, strong, very different from each other, and both are very stubborn. This is described as a young adult and/or a coming of age romance but it is far from being confined to those genres.  It includes the mysterious disappearances of young ladies, beautiful murals being painted on buildings and overpasses of people who are missing or passed away, and a "different" young man who everyone blames for some of the bad things that happen. This story also has a paranormal aspect. I hadn't known that before I chose to add this book to my Kindle. If I had known, I probably would have passed the book by. I feel that most books with a paranormal bend seem contrived and difficult to believe. But Amy Harmon introduces and proves Moses' special abilities in a way that seems possible. Georgia and Moses are flawed characters who might not be easily likable but who won't be easily forgotten.

Couch Cushion Seat & Back Cover Protectors Look Great - 5 Star Review

Couch Cover Protectors

Recently, I've had to protect the light-colored furniture in our newly created TV room upstairs.

We have family staying for a while, and the beige sofa and chairs need a little extra protection. As most of you know, my mom recently passed away; this furniture is from her living room. Needless to say, I'm a bit overprotective of it.

There Are Many Couch Protectors and Slipcovers Styles, So Why Did I Choose These? (Scroll Down to View the Photos)

  • My mom's couch and chairs have skirts on the bottom, so purchasing the ones that slip over the entire couch would not work. These particular slipcovers have elastic that grabs at the bottom and that would crinkle up the skirts.
  • If you look closely at the photos of the full slipcovers provided by verified purchasers, I found the crinkled look sloppy.
  • A few people complained of slipcovers coming off, especially with pets and people just sitting on the couch.
The Couch Seat Covers I Selected are Not Water Resistant
  • I debated purchasing a water-resistant cover, but after researching, some comments said they made a bit of noise when you sat on them. No thanks.
  • Since I wasn't purchasing the protectors for pets, I chose the comfy-cozy ones I selected below.
Why I Approve of These Seat Covers:
  • They're soft
  • They slip on easily
  • They stay on perfectly when you sit on them
  • They fit the back cushions on the sofa as well
  • They're elegant-looking
  • They do come in many colors
  • They're machine washable (I haven't had to wash them yet)
  • The price was acceptable
  • It solved the problem of protecting the couch
What You Should Be Aware of With These Couch Cushion Covers:
  • They come in packs of  2 or 3
  • They come in three size choices
  • They come in many colors
  • Measure your sofa seat length, width, and height first
  • They are relatively thin, so if you need them to provide a liquid barrier, these aren't the ones to choose
Here Are Some Photos of the Cushion Covers (Notice I Was Able to Place Them on the Back Cushions as well):

I've since added these matching arm covers and pillow covers as well.

Note: The chairs are not covered in these photos.
They have since been covered with the same product.

Here's a fun side note: When I backpacked through Europe in 1978, I picked up those three photos on the back wall from the streets of Paris - they were in my mom's upstairs hallway from 1978 to 2021, now they're in my home. The needlepoint deer was made by my grandmother (my mom's mom, and when mom passed, it came to me) - The furniture is also my mom's, so we affectionately refer to this little tv room as "The History Room." There's a cabinet with more photo memories and a tv on the other wall.

★★★★★ - 5 Stars from me. Purchaser approved.

Dark Angel by John Sandford – Book Review

Book #2 in the Letty Davenport Series

An image of computer code

Readers of the book review of The Investigator here on ReviewThisReviews will remember who Letty Davenport is – the adopted daughter of Lucas Davenport from John Sandford's Prey novels.

Now Letty returns in Dark Angel, Book 2 of 2 of what I suspect will be a continuing series. Fans of the Prey series starring Lucus will be delighted with the adventures of Letty Davenport.  As always, anything by John Sandford is an excellent read!

Dark Angel Synopsis

Dark Angel book cover
In the first Letty Davenport novel, Letty proved herself as an investigator with incredible skills with firearms. Her actions drew the attention of several branches of the US government. Thus, the Department of Homeland Security and the NSA have now tasked her with infiltrating a hacker group intent on wreaking havoc.

Letty and her reluctant partner from the NSA (Rod Baxter, a computer whiz) pose as free-spirited programmers for hire. They drive to Los Angeles, headquarters of the hacker group, and begin the process of getting accepted by the Ordinary People group in order to uncover their plans.

Come to find out, the Ordinary People hacker group are not the real enemy. It seems the Russians have ulterior motives to eliminate the hacker group who have the ability to disrupt railway travel at a time when Russia is about to invade Ukraine.

Summary

Letty and a couple friends from other government agencies become bodyguards to the Ordinary People group while the group works on the solution to hindering Russia's plans, thus putting their lives in grave danger.

An exciting new Letty Davenport novel I highly recommend.

ASUS ZenScreen Portable USB Monitor Reviewed

broken laptop screen
I recently had the misfortune of accidentally breaking my laptop computer screen.  My laptop was open and only the screen was hit, therefore the laptop had no other issues.

After the monitor screen was hit, I couldn't see anything except colored lines on the screen, which you can see in the image on the right.  Restarting the laptop did not restore the display.

The phrase "broken computer screen" brings to mind images of shattered or cracked glass, which was not the case with my screen.  In fact, it would be more accurate to say the computer display was broken.

Therefore, the LCD monitor screen on my laptop needs to be replaced.  Until that can be done, I purchased a separate monitor so I would be able to access my files and keep working.  I set the Zenscreen Portable Monitor in front of the original screen to replicate normal working, writing and viewing directly in front of me.

When my laptop screen is replaced, I will continue to use my new portable monitor separately.  It will be great to have two separate screens.  Often, I am working on separate projects or viewing a movie while I work.  The second monitor will make that much easier than using separate windows or tabs on the same screen.  Until this accident, I had never considered a separate monitor, but I am certain I will love having it.

The ASUS ZenScreen Portable Monitor

ASUS ZenScreen  15.6” 1080P Portable USB Monitor (MB16AC) - Full HD (1920 x 1080), IPS, USB Type-C, Eye Care, Smart Case, External Screen for Laptop, 3-Year Warranty,BlackCheck Price This portable monitor is an easy "plug and play" solution when you need a second monitor.  It comes with a connection cable that plugs into a USB-C port.  The monitor is powered by your computer and does not require a separate power plug or receptacle.

I will note that my laptop is an Asus laptop and I had no trouble simply plugging the monitor in.  It worked perfectly!  I have read that it will also work with other computers with a USB-C port, but I have not tried any other brands personally. According to ASUS, " it only needs a single USB connector cable to be fully compatible with almost any laptop".

Specifications of the Asus ZenScreen Portable USB Monitor

  • Nice Size: 15.6 screen
  • Connectivity & Power:  USB
  • Flicker Free
  • Slim Profile
  • Weights less than 2 pounds
  • 3 year warranty
  • Includes Smart Cover for protection & for vertical or horizontal display

Reviewing E-cloths for Easy Cleaning

E-cloth Cleaning Cloths
E-Cloths
Have you discovered the magic of cleaning with microfiber cloths?  If not read on to discover this easy and inexpensive means to clean most everything in your home and car.

My Discovery of this Easy-to-Use Product

I have a wonderful little dog, but she sure leaves a mess on my glass sliding doors.  When she wants back in the house and I'm not right there, she will jump on the door leaving muddy little paw prints all over the back door.  I was constantly pulling out my window cleaning spray, a rag and some newspaper or paper towels and cleaning the doors.  I was complaining about all the work when my sister told me about E-cloths.  I first ordered the E-cloth window cleaning kit and was immediately impressed.  With just two cloths I could easily clean my glass doors, windows and mirrors.  All I needed to do was to wet the cleaning cloth and wipe down the glass.  I then took the polishing cloth and finished the job.  No cleaning products, no paper towels, just two cloths that can be rinsed and reused again and again.  When they get soiled they can be thrown in the washer.

E-cloths for More Cleaning Tasks

Another area where I struggled to keep them clean and shiny were my kitchen countertops.  I wondered if there might be an E-cloth that would handle this chore, so I checked out Amazon and was amazed at all the varieties of E-cloths available.  It seems there are E-cloths for every cleaning task you can imagine.  Here are a few that I noted:
  • Deep Clean Microfiber Mop
  • Toy and Nursery Cloth
  • Shower Kit
  • Kitchen Dish Scrubber Sponge
  • Highchair Cleaning Cloth
  • Pet Cleaning and Drying Cloths
There were also many different combination kits.  I selected a 5-pc Starter Pack and have been using it daily.  I have found that it is great for not only my countertops, but for all of the surfaces in my kitchen.  I also keep one of the cloths in each of my bathrooms for quick clean up jobs.  They are fantastic.  It has seriously saved me money because I no longer need as many cleaning products or paper towels.

Features of E-cloths

Here are some of the features you will enjoy with e-cloths.
  • Washable
  • Reusable
  • No need for any cleaning sprays
  • Use all over the house and in your cars
  • Made of 89% Polyester and 20% Polyamide
  • Clean in three easy steps (Dampen cleaning cloth, wipe clean and follow up with dry polishing cloth)
One of the places I really love using the cloths is for my bathroom mirrors.  I keep them handy in the bathrooms and with just a quick wipe and dry my mirrors stay clean and streak free.

I could go on and on about these great cleaning tools but I will leave you with one last thought.  They are very inexpensive, so "Try It-You'll Like It!"

The Best Spa Headbands for Face Washing, Skincare, Makeup Application

Today's product review is for my favorite spa headbands, which I use both morning and evening to hold my hair back while I cleanse my face and apply my skincare, sunscreen, and (sometimes) makeup.

The spa headbands I tried before discovering these were uncomfortable and/or unattractive. Fortunately, my new spa headbands are both comfortable and cute and come in a range of color choices.

The Best Spa Headbands - Cute and Comfortable

One of My Favorite Beauty Accessories

Recently, I have been sharing product reviews of several of my favorite affordable beauty and skincare tools and accessories, including microfiber spa wristbands that keep your arms dry during facial cleansing, soft microfiber-covered face washing sponges and silicone facial cleansing and exfoliating lip scrubbers that cleanse your pores gently and effectively and make your lips smoother and fuller.

Now, I'm pleased to share the spa headbands that I use twice a day to keep my hair out of my face during cleansing and then application of my skincare products, sunscreen (every day, rain, snow or shine!), and makeup (if I'm wearing any).

3 different styles of spa headbands
The terrycloth wrap (left) has a hook-and-loop closure that snagged my hair. The soft microfiber plush band (right) was too tight, despite the elasticized back. Fortunately, the padded headband (center) is perfect—comfortable, easy to get on and off, and even cute!

Before discovering these, I had been using either terrycloth or microfiber spa headbands that encircle the entire head. Some were too small (even though I don't have a large head), making them uncomfortable. One had a Velcro-type hook-and-loop closure that often snagged my hair. The other wasn't adjustable and, despite the small length of elastic at the back, was hard to get on and off and gave me a headache. Also (admittedly a secondary consideration), neither was very attractive while I was staring at my face in my magnifying makeup mirror, lol.

Recently, I started seeing beauty influencers on Instagram and YouTube wearing these cute, padded spa headbands to keep their hair away from their faces while demonstrating skincare or makeup application.

Honestly, my expectations were low, especially when I looked on Amazon and saw how inexpensive a set of two of these headbands was. But after I messaged one of the "mature beauty" influencers I follow who assured me that they were, indeed, both comfortable and secure, I decided to give them a try.

I'm so glad I did!

Key Features and Benefits

Here are the main reasons I love these affordable padded spa headbands.

Spa headbands in 3 colors
Three of my four padded spa headbands (I have two in black)

Comfortable

The spa headbands I had tried before either were too tight or had a Velcro-type hook-and-loop closure that often snagged my hair. One of my hesitations in ordering these was that I often find semi-rigid (plastic or metal) headbands uncomfortable and they tend to give me a headache after I wear them for a short time.

Fortunately, these padded spa headbands are quite flexible and don't give me a headache.

Secure

Even though these bands are flexible enough to be worn comfortably—even throughout the day, if you wish—they also hold my hair securely, keeping it away from my face while I am cleansing or doing my skincare, sunscreen, or makeup application.

Attractive and Versatile

Even though I prioritized function over looks when searching for spa headbands, the fact that these are much cuter and more functional than the others I tried is a nice bonus. In fact, these look nice enough for younger women and girls to wear as a casual fashion accessory. Even as a senior, I sometimes wear the black one when I go out for a walk.

They’re also great for keeping your hair off your face while exercising or soaking in a tub.

Note: When I wear these in any color other than black, my husband has been known to teasingly call me Lady Liberty.

Choice of Colors

These come in sets of two in a range of color options. At the time of this post's publication, there are seven color combinations to choose from:

  • Black and light blue
  • Black and lime green
  • Black and white
  • Black and bright yellow
  • Light blue and white (although the product photo on Amazon shows one white spa headband and one pair of microfiber face-washing wristbands)
  • Light pink and black
  • Light blue and light pink

Inexpensive and Good Quality

As of this post's publication, nearly all the color choices sell on Amazon for $9.99 plus free Prime shipping for Amazon Prime members. Since they come in a set of two, that's less than $5 per band! The pink and black combo currently is even less expensive at $7.71 for the pair.

Given the low price, I was nervous about the quality. When my order arrived, however, I was delighted by the quality of the materials and finishing. Although I have only had mine for two months so far, they have held up well.

In fact, I like them so much that I recently ordered a second pair so I could get a light blue one.

Affordable Beauty Gifts for Women of All Ages

Any woman or teen girl who enjoys beauty, skincare, or makeup application would probably love to receive a set of these cute, comfortable, padded spa headbands as a gift.

If the women or girls on your list are avid skincare or makeup enthusiasts, consider putting together baskets of beauty gifts including some or all of the following spa accessories to create luxurious "gifts for her" at an affordable price. The plush VOLO Hero microfiber hair towel is the most expensive item at $44.25, but most of the suggestions below come in at around $10-$15 (as of this post's publication).

MY BARBIE DOLL MEMORIES

The new Barbie movie has caused lots of us to stop, think and talk about our Barbie doll memories. Discover the memories of this Baby Boomer!

BARBIE MEMORIES OF A BABY BOOMER

Barbie was invented in 1959, a few years before my sister and I were born and it would be a few more years before we were ready to play Barbie. When we were ready in about 1967, a young neighbor who we barely knew gave us her entire Barbie collection. She had had a few years to amass a small collection and to outgrow it. How lucky for us! That gift was the start of our Barbie collections and provided many, many hours of play. Though I have no idea who she was or where she might be today, I have never forgotten her generosity.

Over the years, we accrued, mostly from Santa Claus, but also on birthdays and with birthday money, a few more Barbie dolls and, of course, a few more Barbie-themed items to go with them.

As with most familial memories, my sister and I have slightly differing memories but I know that we shared that collection that was passed to us over the fence. What follows is a review of the main Barbie items that I remember us having. I apologize if this list is not 100 percent accurate.

GOIN' CAMPING BREEZY BUGGY CAR AND TENT TRAILER SET (1973)

GOIN' CAMPING BREEZY BUGGY CAR AND TENT TRAILER SET (1973)
I had a Barbie convertible and tent trailer set from 1973 known as The Barbie Goin' Camping set with Breezy Buggy and Tent Trailer. The Breezy Buggy “really rolled” and the tent trailer “closed up to tow neat and tidy.” This set came with everything that Barbie needed to go camping with including a sleeping bag, a campfire and grill, a camp stool, a picnic table and cooking accessories.  I turned up a few Goin' Camping sets and items here on eBay. It is interesting to see that people still want this set today.

COUNTRY CAMPER (1970)

We played a lot with Barbie's Country Camper. How about you?

My sister had the 1970 Barbie Country Camper, which was known as “a home for Barbie wherever she explores…The swinginest camper on wheels!” It, too, came with a a couple of camp stools and sleeping bags to help Barbie on the go. I found a selection of Country Campers and replacement parts and pieces here on eBay. The picture shown here was used with permission of eBay seller Gameday28 who has other Barbie items and a large selection of vintage toys in his eBay store.

THE TOWNHOUSE (1973)

My sister also had the three-foot-high Barbie Townhouse that featured a real ‘working’ elevator and a house full of plastic furniture. For whatever reason, I vividly remember the orange couch.

TALKING BUSY BARBIE (1972)

In terms of dolls, I remember having a Barbie with short curly hair that talked. I think she may have been the Talking Busy Barbie who was released in 1972. This talking doll said things like, "I dig having my own TV," "The new fashions are wild" and "That music is groovy."

MALIBU BARBIE (1971)

I also remember both of us eventually owning the 1971 Malibu Barbie. She turned out to be one of the most popular Barbies ever made and was produced for quite a few years. She was the ultimate surfer girl, suntanned with long straight blonde hair. Interestingly, she was popular enough that she has even been reissued over the years. If you are curious, you can see all of the new, used and vintage versions of Malibu Barbie here on eBay. My search just now turned up more than 2,300 Malibu Barbie items!

-----------------------------------------------------

We did not have a lot of toys when we were growing up, which was the way it was in those days for most children. Being gifted with a Barbie collection was definitely pretty special.

How about you? Did you play with Barbie? Do you have any Barbie memories?

See you
in Barbie land!

Addaday Travel Foam Roller Review

Soothe and relax muscles whether travelling locally or afar with this handy travel roller. Small enough to fit in a tote, large purse, workout bag or carryon bag, the Addaday is perfect for travel with its' size and light weight.

Blue foam roller sitting in a green hedge.

Addaday Features

  1. Lightweight but still effective
  2. Easy to pack in luggage or carryon or a large purse or tote
  3. Material is a mix between a pool noodle on the soft side and hard acrylic roller for the hard side comparison
  4. Measures seven inches in length
  5. Small enough to use in an airplane seat or car
  6. Large enough to use on all muscle groups
  7. Six sides
  8. Hex design with small indentations
  9. The indentions in the roller help to massage and find the pressure points
  10. Medium density

Warm Up and Recovery

The first purchase I made for a travel roller was too large for ease of travel. I felt that size was just big enough to be bulky and the intent was to find a foam roller for local and long distance travel. I was also looking for a roller that was not too firm. The first attempt was returned and the search continued.

After reading many many reviews I decided upon the Addaday. Overall it has been a positive purchase. Foam rollers of any size are not inexpensive and run the gamut of price. Add that each person is unique in their preference of size, density and design and it can be difficult to find online the first time.
