Reviewing Ten Effective Ways To Reduce High Home Humidity

Window with condensation

If you feel that the humidity in your home is high or you know for certain as you have used hygrometers to check, there are some effective measures you can take to reduce it.

High humidity is generally considered to be above 60%. In most homes the aim is to have humidity at a healthy level or 40-50%.

Humidity that is too high is damaging to our health and the fabric of our homes so it is very important to address it.

Some Of The Indicators Of High Humidity Are:-

  • Visible mould around windows, in corners and behind furniture
  • Visible mildew which may be white , green or black
  • Peeling wallpaper or peeling bubbling paint
  • Walls that feel damp or wet to the touch or where you can see damp areas with colour discolouration on walls.
  • Black mould
  • Windows that are dripping with water or have condensation, we frequently had this occur in our home before we took measures
  • A muggy feel to the air. We did sometimes experince this.
  • A damp smell in your home
  • Wooden furniture or flooring that is warping or in the case of floors a squeaky floorboard or two.
  • Signs of pest activity or seeing the pests themselves as creatures like silverfish love humid environments
  • Clothes that feel damp when you take them out the wardrobe or draws
  • Anyone in the house who starts developing typical allergy symptoms- coughing, sneezing, skin rash - as it may be a dust mite allergy. Dust mites thrive in humid conditions and love to live in mattresses, carpets, rugs, sofas and curtains and even clothes. My husband started to develop these allergic symptoms.
  • You have a hygrometer to measure humidity and it is consistently showing above 60% humidity. Once we bought a hygrometer it showed that we were living in humidity generally between 55% to 75% depending on the room, so it was too high.
  •  I reviewed hygrometers in my previous article Reviewing The Benefits Of A Home Hygrometer To Monitor Humidity

  • Hygrometer measuring humidity and temperature

Risk Factors For High Humidity

  • You dry wet washing in your home on an airer or over a radiator. This was a big issue for us as from November to March there are few days when i can get washing out on the line in the garden. I don't like running a tumble dryer very often as it is incredibly expensive, so indoor drying was the only option. I never dried over a radiator as I knew that heavily contributed to the central heating needing to work harder, but we did use an airer frequently.
  • You don't put the heating on much or at all. This was another issue for us, since the cost of energy has become significantly more expensive we do try to put the heating on for only short periods at key times for example before going for baths or showers and first thing in the morning when the house is often cold down to 12-14 degrees in winter.
  • You close off some rooms in your home and do not heat them. We don't do this as I think it just makes matters worse, but we do know many people who do.
  • You rarely open windows or have extractor fans on. We don't have extractor fans but every morning that it is not raining or snowing we open the windows in all rooms for a minimum of 10 minutes, longer if possible without allowing the house to get too cold.
  • You have a naturally humid home like ours with solid brick walls and double glazing
  • You live in a humid climate either at particular seasons or year round

Measures You Can Take To Reduce Humidity.

1. When cooking cover pots and pans with lids, use an extractor fan or open a window for a during and after cooking. We do cover pans with lids and always have a window open unless it is blowing a gale or heavy driving rain.

2. Showers. When showering keep the bathroom door closed and the extractor fan on or open a window during and for a while afterwards, at least 10 minutes, to allow steam to escape outside. We always do this to prevent steam from escaping into the rest of the house.

3.Open windows.  On days it is not raining open the windows for a while, even 10 minutes helps to circulate fresh air. I was raised to do this, even in freezing cold days i recall my parents going around opening all the windows to let stale air out and fresh air in and I have continued that practice.

4.Trickle vents.  If possible it is useful to install trickle vents on air bricks to improve the flow of air

5.Seal any leaks or gaps around windows and doors. This was more of an issue for us before we installed double glazed doors which have solved that problem.  If you suspect any roof issues get a reputable company to check your roof for any leaks and if so have them fixed. Keep guttering clean and free from debris and check downpipes are working well.

6. Buy passive moisture-absorbing materials like silica gel or baking soda. I have found that these do not make a huge difference in bigger rooms but can be more effective in smaller spaces, cupboards and wardrobes. We have them in smaller spaces and understairs cupboards where we cant use a dehumidifyer.

16 Pack Moisture Absorbers, 10.5 OZ Humidity Absorber BucketCheck Price

7. Houseplants including the beautiful peace lily and easy to care for spider plant. I have read the claims that these plants can help to naturally absorb water thus helping with high humidity. However it is important not to overwater houseplants as otherwise the standing excess water  will only contribute to raise humidity. We have both these plants in our home. I cannot tell how much direct influence they have on our humidity levels but they are lovely plants and we are happy to have them. I would not however, rely on houseplants to lower humidity. Do be aware that many houseplants contribute to humidity levels though. I still love them in our home.

8. When washing clothes run them through an additional spin cycle appropriate to the clothing, to squeeze out a little more water before drying in an airer inside. This can make a surprising difference to how damp they come out of the machine. If you can get them outside on the line for a while, or can afford to run the dryer for 10-20 minutes that too will help.

9. Buy an air conditioner.

If humidity is an issue in warmer months an air conditioner may help. We don't have an air conditioner so I can't comment how effective it is, but if you have one it would be worth testing  running it with a hygrometer in the same room to see how it affects humidity levels.

10. Buy a Dehumidifier

To be fair if you have consistent high humidity in your home the most effective method is to buy a dehumidifier or even two depending on the size and layout of your home. A dehumidifier actively takes moisture out of the room thus combatting the source of the problem. In our home we do all the measures, but the dehumidifier is the one that made the most significant difference and fairly quickly. We have one upstairs and one downstairs. We have two large dessicant dehumidifiers and a small thermo electric one, which suits us as they can still operate in lower temperatures and meet our laundry and home needs. We find the smaller one is good for small rooms or for maintaining a humidity level though not quite as powerful at brining the level down. There are also compressor dehumidifiers. These machines are available in different sizes and powers for different needs. It is important to research carefully the one that will suit your home and needs.

Here are just two examples of dehumidifiers

VINBERG DEHUMIDIFIERCheck Price Onsekin DehumidifierCheck Price

When we first started using the dehumidifiers the water container filled up very quickly and we would need to empty it several times a day. At first the hygrometer showed that the machine was doing its work and brought down the humidity , but when we stopped using it for a few hours, the humidity rose again.

After a few weeks we noted we did not need to empty it so often and that the machine brought that humidity down and it did not rise again so fast. I think this is because we had extracted the deeper levels of moisture that was likely in the mattress, sofas and curtains.

Now we can have them on a lower power setting and they still keep the rooms to humidity 40-50% humidity and fairly stable at that which is about right for us and our home.

So in our experience anyway if you do have high humidity your dehumidifier will need to work hard at first and you may need to empty it more often and keep it on for longer with the humidity up and down a bit. However, over time this will settle and you may be able to operate the dehumidifier for longer without needing to empty and on a more lower power maintenance level.

View of control panel on a digital dehumidifier

The exception to this of course is when drying laundry. We put our clothes on an airer and place the dehumidifier nearby and always on "Laundry mode" in a closed room. It is important to keep clothes well spaced out on the airer to allow airflow. I find with our more powerful  machine, that I can mostly dry damp clothes overnight on a good laundry mode setting.

It is important to close windows when using a dehumidifier as otherwise your machine will be working hard to dehumidify the world !

When we bought a hygrometer our dehumidifying efforts were much more effective, as we then knew which areas and rooms to target to lower humidity. So I would recommend buying at least one hygrometer.

If you would like to learn more about them please read my article Reviewing The Benefits Of A Home Hygrometer To Monitor Humidity

So from my experience the most effective way to deal with a home that has too high humidity is to do small simple measures like keep the shower or bathroom door closed when taking a shower, cover pans when cooking , make sure there is good ventilation, especially in the kitchen and bathroom. Let fresh air in every day it is not raining or blowing  gale, use a hygrometer so that you know your humidity and use a dehumidifier.

I have to say that buying our dehumidifiers was the best thing we did as our home is now so much more comfortable, clean air, no condensation on the windows, no damp and my husbands allergic reactions have ceased completely.

My New, Easy Way to Get Soft, Smooth Heels and Feet Overnight

In October 2023 I wrote a post sharing the method I was using to soften dry, callused, cracked heels and feet. Since then, however, I have discovered an even faster, easier, and less messy way, thanks to the Serum Doctor Flawless Feet System. Here is my product review of this fantastic, convenient system that will especially appeal to those of you who don't like to wear socks over foot cream to bed.

Serum Doctor Flawless Feet System for Soft, Smooth Heels Overnight

A Quick, Easy and Elegant Upgrade to My Foot Care Routine

I’ve always believed that caring for our skin shouldn’t stop at our faces. As we get older, our feet need a little extra TLC, especially if we want to keep them looking soft, smooth, and healthy. When my heels became dry, calloused and cracked, I used to use a diamond foot rasp, then soak them in warm, soapy water for 20 minutes, dry them, apply a healing ointment or foot cream, and cover them with socks just before going to bed. That method is still very effective, but it's time-consuming and messy, and I don't love wearing socks to bed.

Fortunately, I have discovered a new way to smooth and soften my calloused feet and heal my cracked heels that takes just a few minutes and is easy and mess-free: The Serum Doctor Flawless Feet System. It's definitely an upgrade to the method I used to use!

Serum Doctor Flawless Feet diamond file and serum

A Review of the Serum Doctor Flawless Feet System

The Serum Doctor Flawless Feet System consists of a diamond foot file and a serum in a green glass bottle with a rollerball applicator. After using it for the past year, I can honestly say this is the easiest, most convenient foot care routine I’ve ever used, and surprisingly effective, considering how fast and simple it is. If you struggle with dry, cracked heels or stubborn calluses, this little duo could become your new best friend.

What’s Included in the System

The Flawless Feet System includes two products that work together beautifully:

Serum Doctor Flawless Foot File

Step 1: Serum Doctor Flawless Foot File

This isn’t your average foot file. It’s lightweight but sturdy and designed to be used on dry skin only. I use the file either just before my shower or just before bed to gently smooth away rough spots on my heels, the balls of my feet, and anywhere else that needs a little help.

Unlike other files I’ve tried, this one doesn’t feel flimsy or harsh. The grit is just right—it removes dead, dry skin effectively without feeling scratchy or leaving your feet irritated, the way coarser diamond file or "cheese grater"-style foot files can. In fact, even after just one use, my heels immediately looked smoother and felt softer to the touch. I usually use it about once a week to maintain smooth, soft, crack- and callus-free heels.

Serum Doctor Flawless Feet Serum glass bottle with rollerball applicator

Step 2: Serum Doctor Flawless Feet Serum

Once your feet are freshly filed and prepped, it’s time for the star of the show, the Flawless Feet Serum. Unlike typical thick, greasy foot creams, this is a lightweight, fast-absorbing roll-on serum that hydrates, softens, and gently exfoliates at the same time.

Key Ingredients

  • Tea Tree Oil: Naturally deodorizes and keeps feet feeling fresh.
  • Sodium Hyaluronate: A form of hyaluronic acid that deeply hydrates and plumps up dry, rough skin.
  • Fruit Acid Complex (apple, lemon, orange, sugar cane): Provides gentle, natural exfoliation to smooth and brighten skin texture.

I love the mess-free rollerball applicator! Because it’s in a glass roll-on bottle, it’s easy to apply without getting the foot serum all over your hands or wasting the serum. The formula absorbs very quickly (within a minute), so your feet don’t feel slippery or sticky afterward. That also means you don't have to wear socks over this serum, the way you would with most foot care creams or ointments.

My Experience Using the System

The first time I used the Serum Doctor Flawless Feet System, I noticed an immediate difference in how soft my heels felt. But where this duo really shines is with consistent use. After a couple of weeks, the rough patches and cracks on my heels and the dry skin around my toes were significantly softer and smoother, and my feet looked healthier overall.

I especially appreciate how fast and easy this foot care system is to use:

  1. File the bottoms of your dry feet with the Serum Doctor Flawless Foot File. Gently wipe away any residue (I use a paper towel). As I mentioned, you can file your feet either just before a shower or just before bed.
  2. Roll on the Serum Doctor Flawless Feet Serum on clean, dry feet and let it absorb (it only takes a minute or so).

I’ve used plenty of foot creams over the years, but they all leave behind a greasy film that makes it impossible to put on socks or slippers right away. This serum is different—it delivers intense hydration without the mess.

Pros and Cons

What I Love

  • Simple, quick, and effective two-step system that takes just a few minutes
  • Hands-free, mess-free serum in a roll-on applicator bottle
  • Deep hydration without greasiness
  • No need to cover with socks
  • Gentle exfoliation that smooths rough patches over time
  • Subtle, fresh, herbal scent, thanks to the tea tree oil
  • Works beautifully for maintaining results between pedicures

Considerations

The price is definitely higher than more mainstream foot care products you buy in the drugstore or on Amazon. The complete Serum Doctor Flawless Feet System (diamond file and foot serum), which is sold at stores like Nordstrom and Anthropologie, among others, costs $56 for the set at the time of this post's publication, but you use so little product each time that it lasts for months. The Flawless Feet Serum in the glass rollerball applicator bottle can be repurchased as needed for $42 (as of this post's publication date). The diamond Flawless Foot File has lasted me for more than a year so far and shows no signs of needing to be replaced. However, replacement files are available for $20 (as of this post's publication date).

If you don't mind using greasy foot creams or ointments and wearing socks over them, the products I shared in my post on How to Soften Dry, Callused, Cracked Heels the Easy Way are less expensive. The choice is yours.

Not Just For Women

After watching my husband use a cheese grater-style foot file, I bought a second Serum Doctor Flawless Feet System for him. He loves how fast and easy it is to use, how quickly the serum absorbs, and how smooth the diamond foot file and serum leave his feet.

Final Thoughts

The Serum Doctor Flawless Feet System has earned a permanent spot in my self-care routine. I love that it combines gentle exfoliation with deep, lasting hydration, all without leaving my feet greasy or slippery or having to wear socks over a cream or ointment.

If you’ve been frustrated by rough, dry heels or just want to keep your feet looking their best year-round, I highly recommend giving this system a try. It’s an easy, at-home solution that actually delivers visible results, especially if you stick with it consistently.

Your feet will thank you!

Reviewing Cleaning Cloths for Spectacles Or Eyeglasses

Eyeglasses with a microfibre cleaning cloth

If you wear eyeglasses for reading or driving or long distance or wear sunglasses we need to clean them effectively and easily. I really dislike when my glasses are smudged or do not feel clean and it certainly makes it harder to read or drive or watch Tv when they are not crystal clean!

So it is important to clean eyeglasses often and carefully. Eyeglasses and sunglasses can be often incredibly expensive and so need to be treated well.

If we use the wrong type of cleaning cloth it can damage your lenses including damaging the coatings, scratching the lenses and just cause irritating streaking and smudging.

Always Avoid Cleaning Eyeglasses With These Items

Any dirty cloth , even a microfibre one. Dirt particles can scratch the coating of the lens and cause damage.

Pieces of your clothing like a T shirt or fleece. Most of us have probably done this from time to time when we don't have a cloth handy and our glasses are dirty, but its not a great idea. You can transfer oils, sweat and dirt onto your glasses and any dust particles can scratch the surface. Also depending on the fabric it is often not very effective and can make things worse.

General household cleaners and sprays designed for kitchen or bathroom use. These are generally too abrasive or contain chemicals that can damage our glasses coatings.

Using the wrong cleaning method can at best leave annoying and irritating streaks and smudges and at worse scratch your lenses and  damage coatings which may need to be repaired or replaced.

How Should We Clean Our Eyeglasses?

There are several options for cleaning cloths to clean our eyeglasses, sunglasses or spectacles. I have listed three below but there are other options that you may find useful and effective.

  • Microfibre Cleaning Cloths

These are by far my best option. The ones I use now are Go Optical Microfibre Glasses Cleaner but I have had many different makes over the years and all have been very good.

Microfibre is a densely woven cloth that is very soft and non abrasive. It has excellent cleaning properties and takes off dust and oils easily and quickly.

They can be washed and used many times so they do work out cost effective and good for the planet. To keep it clean wash every couple of weeks or sooner if your glasses get more dirty. It is usually only necessary to use a mild soap and warm water. I usually handwash as its quicker and easier but they can be generally machine washed as well. Do not use fabric conditioner though as it reduces the absorbency and effectiveness of the cloth.

Microfibre cloths can be used anywhere when at home or out and about and travelling. They have the added advantage of being able to use them on many other household items such as camera lenses, laptop and tablet screens, TV's, mirrors, gaming toys, phone screens and glasses.

I just love how so quickly and easily they turn my smudged and annoying  glasses into a lovely clear vision! Its a small thing but one that makes life a little bit easier and better.

  • Pre-Moistened Spectacle Wipes

These often come in boxes with many wipes in individually wrapped packaging or in a larger single tub. The individual wipes can be very useful especially when at work, school, gym or travelling.

They are usually once only use and being individually wrapped can be useful as they do not dry out easily while the packet is intact, but also can be wasteful. They are generally not reuseable.

So if you are not travelling and using at home the tub option dispenser type may be better.

Once opened they must be used quickly as once exposed to air they can dry out.  It is good to look for ones that are free from parabens, alcohol, dyes and too many chemicals and made from sustainable plant based fibres.

VOISEN Lens Wipes for Eyeglasses,450 Pack Eye Glasses Cleaner Wipes,Pre-Moistened Individually Wrapped Lens WipesCheck Price

  • Reusable Spray and Cloth Glasses Cleaning Kits

These are a combination of a microfibre cloth plus a cleaning solution. It is good for a really proper clean. Most are best I feel to use at home as otherwise its quite a lot to carry around just for cleaning glasses, but a good option especially if you often get oils or dust or other dirt on eyeglasses or sunglasses.

However the one featured below is  listed as compact and easier to travel with as it is all contained in a convenient tube,  so may be a good on the go option to consider.

MidOpt Professional Optics Cleaning Solution and Microfiber Cloth, for Clean and Smudge-Free LensesCheck Price

The most effective way to clean glasses or spectacles

If glasses are really dirty then rinse them with clear water under the tap/faucet first, just so that any dirt particles are washed away so as not to cause any abrasion or marks. If they are not really dirty you can skip this step.

If very smudged or dirty or have oils on them, its a good idea now and again to use a specific lens cleaning solution tot he lenses.

Then simply wipe over with  clean, dry microfibre cloth. Clean gently and cover the whole lens area with a slow circular motion. If they are not really dirty you can just clean with a microfibre cloth.

My overall preference for cleaning my eyeglasses is a microfibre cleaning cloth. It is safe, effective and easily available. I find mine cleans without streaks and gets rid of smudges and gives a lovely clear view.

I can wash it and use it for a long time without having to replace. However I do have several so I always have one in the car, the house, my handbag etc. I hate having dirty glasses so this way I always have one to hand when I need it.

It is a good practice to keep the microfibre cloth in a small pouch or carry bag to protect it and keep it clean too. I do keep some single use cleaning cloths in the house and my handbag in case of emergencies as well. Every now and again I will give them a thorough clean with a lens solution and microfibre cloth combination. However my go to item for cleaning daily is a microfibre cleaning cloth.

Anyone who wears eyeglasses or sunglasses will know how important they are to clear and good sight and how expensive they can be to buy. We do not want to compromise clear vision with dirty, smudged glasses or to compromise the effectiveness with scratched damaged lenses. So it is a small but valuable consideration to have a safe, effective cleaning cloth.

You Will Love These Moist, Delicious, Low Sugar Protein Brownies

A delicious brownie that treats your tastebuds and supports your wellness goals? Yes, please.

As someone who prioritizes health without sacrificing enjoyment, I’m always on the lookout for snacks and desserts that feel indulgent but support my body, especially my skin, joints, and energy. So when I came across Prime Bites Protein Brownies, I was intrigued. A brownie with 19 grams of protein, 5 grams of collagen, a moist, fudgy texture and fairly low in added sugars? That definitely caught my attention.

After trying several flavors and incorporating them into my daily routine, I’m ready to share my honest thoughts. Here's my product review.

The Best Moist, Delicious, Low Sugar Protein Brownies

What Are Prime Bites Protein Brownies?

Prime Bites are individually wrapped high-protein brownies created by Alpha Prime. Each brownie is:

  • Generously sized (my husband and I sometimes split one)
  • Packed with 19g of whey protein
  • Enriched with 5g of collagen
  • Low in added sugars, sweetened using a blend of erythritol and other sweeteners
  • Around 200–240 calories, depending on the flavor
  • Available in fun dessert-inspired flavors: As of this writing (July 2, 2025), the flavor choices are:
    • Peanut Butter Candy Crunch
    • Glazed Cinnamon Roll
    • Glazed Chocolate Donut
    • Chocolate Cookie Monster
    • Cookies & Cream Blondie
    • Banana Nut
    • Cookie Dough
    • Blueberry Cobbler
    • Birthday Cake Blondie
    • Red Velvet
    • PB&J
    • Variety Pack
  • Crafted in small batches in the company's Miami bakery for quality control
  • Absolutely delicious!

These aren’t dry, chalky protein bars pretending to be brownies. They’re surprisingly soft and satisfying.

3 boxes of Prime Bites Protein Brownies

What I Love About These Protein Brownies

Excellent Texture and Flavor

I was honestly surprised by how moist and rich these brownies are. (They're even better after a quick 10-second warm-up in the microwave.) The texture is soft and slightly dense, much like a traditional fudge brownie. My husband and I have enjoyed all the flavors we have tried so far: Glazed Chocolate Donut, Chocolate Cookie Monster, Banana Nut, Cookie Dough, and Red Velvet brownies. (The Banana Nut isn't quite as indulgent as the other flavors we've tried.)

These taste like indulgent bakery treats, minus the sugar crash. They’re especially good when you’re craving something comforting but want to stay on track.

Packed With Protein and Collagen

Getting enough protein, especially as we age and lose muscle, can be a challenge. The combination of whey protein and collagen makes these brownies more than just a snack; they’re also nutritionally beneficial. I love knowing that I’m supporting my skin, joints, and lean muscle while indulging in something that tastes like dessert.

For those of us over 50, this collagen boost is especially welcome, since natural collagen production declines with age and affects everything from skin firmness, hair health and nail health to bone health.

Portability and Convenience

Each brownie is individually wrapped, which makes it easy to throw one into a handbag, gym bag, or even your car’s center console for a mid-day boost. They don’t melt or crumble, and they are much more delicious and feel more satisfying than typical protein bars.

A Few Things to Consider

Flavor Preferences Vary

Some flavors lean sweeter than others, and a few have a noticeable sugar-alcohol aftertaste. If you're sensitive to erythritol or similar sweeteners, you might want to sample one or two before buying a full box.

Not Budget-Friendly

These come in boxes of 12 individually wrapped protein brownies. At around $3–$3.50 per brownie, these are on the pricier side, but you are paying for high-quality protein, added collagen, and convenience, as well as supporting a small business.

I try to wait for a promo code or sale and stock up on the flavors we love.

Four flavors of individually wrapped Prime Bites Protein Brownies

Nutrition Snapshot

Per brownie (approximate):

  • Calories: 200–240
  • Protein: 19g
  • Collagen: 5g
  • Added Sugar: ~4–11g
  • Net Carbs: 7–14g (varies by flavor)
  • Sweeteners: Erythritol, allulose, and others

Where to Buy

I find the best promos are usually directly from the brand's website, where you can also create a custom assortment box with four flavors of your choice. You can also order the Brownie Variety Pack that includes all the flavors for you to try.

I love these brownies (and the brand new muffins) so much that I became an affiliate partner. You can save 15% when you order Prime Bites Protein Brownies through my affiliate link.

If you prefer to order Prime Bites Protein Brownies on Amazon, you can. You can also sign up for a Subscribe & Save subscription on Amazon.

Final Thoughts

I’ve tried dozens of high protein snacks and desserts over the years, and most have been too dry, too chalky, lacking in taste, texture, or both. But Prime Bites Protein Brownies stand out. They satisfy my sweet tooth, deliver meaningful nutrition, and support my healthy aging goals with that bonus dose of collagen.

If you're looking for a protein-rich treat that aligns with your skincare and wellness routine, these are absolutely worth trying—especially when you want a little indulgence without the guilt.

Marble Patterned Self-Adhesive Vinyl Quickly Elevates Product Photos

If you're a content creator, beauty blogger, or small business owner, you know how important beautiful visuals are on social media. A clean, elegant backdrop can make your products look more polished and professional—but that doesn’t mean you need to invest in pricey marble slabs, expensive portable flat lay backdrop systems or custom studio setups.

Instead, I use marble-patterned self-adhesive vinyl over large foam boards to create easy, affordable, and incredibly photogenic backdrops. It's an elegant and budget-friendly way to get that high-end marble look, and it's a quick and easy DIY project.

Since our house is old and our bathrooms are dated, I can replicate the look of a marble countertop and backsplash inexpensively for my skincare and beauty product photos for social media.

DIY Marble Photography Backdrops for Elegant Product Photos

Why Marble Patterned Vinyl Is a Game-Changer for Flat Lays and Product Photos

A marble pattern adds a soft, clean, and sophisticated feel to photos without overwhelming the subject. Whether I’m shooting a serum bottle, a compact, or a jar of collagen peptides, the subtle veining of marble vinyl gives just enough visual interest while keeping the focus where it belongs: on the product.

Plus, unlike fabric backdrops or poster board, vinyl is durable, easy to clean, and reusable—perfect for skincare or beauty photography where spills or smudges can happen.

How I Use DIY Faux Marble Backdrops to Elevate My Product Photography

I use my marble patterned self-adhesive vinyl to cover foam board panels. Here’s why that works so well:

  • Lightweight & Portable – I can move them around for the best natural light.
  • Versatile – One board can be used flat for a flat lay or propped up for a clean vertical background.
  • Reversible – Cover each side with a different pattern to maximize options in minimal space.

Some brands have a grid-lined backing that makes it easy to measure and cut the vinyl to size. It’s repositionable during application, which helps prevent air bubbles or misalignment. Once it’s smoothed out, the finish looks seamless on camera.

Covering foam boards with marble-patterned self-stick vinyl isn't difficult and the resulting backdrops are lightweight and easy to store. They can be used individually as flat lays or in pairs to simulate a countertop and backsplash or similar background. And they give my product photos of skincare and beauty products for social media a more elegant, upscale look.

Other Creative Uses

This type of marble-patterned vinyl isn’t just for photography. It’s also great for:

  • Giving countertops or tabletops a refresh
  • Lining shelves or drawers
  • Creating DIY wall panels or art
  • Covering old furniture for a stylish upgrade

Basically, any flat, smooth surface is fair game.

My Favorite Marble Self-Stick Vinyl Rolls

There are many marble-patterned self-adhesive vinyl options out there, but my favorites have the following characteristics:

  • Realistic Look: I prefer a marble pattern with subtle, soft veining that looks like real marble and photographs beautifully, with no harsh lines or fake plastic shine.
  • Smooth Application: I want the adhesive backing to stay where I put it without being overly aggressive. I want it to be forgiving during setup, but once applied, stay in place with no peeling edges.
  • Durable Finish: I look for thick, good-quality, patterned self-stick vinyl that doesn’t wrinkle or bubble easily and wipes clean with a damp cloth.

My husband drove me to several large home improvement stores to look at their self-adhesive vinyl selections. Unfortunately, most of the patterns were unappealing and lacked the elegance and sophistication I was looking for.

Fortunately, Amazon has a much broader selection and I was able to find quite a few beautiful marble patterned self-stick vinyl options that met my needs.

Here are the marble-patterned vinyl rolls I chose for my backdrops. I chose patterns and colors that I thought could work well together if I wanted to mix and match them for a contrasting "countertop" and "backsplash" effect.

My favorite is probably the Cohoo Home Marble Contact Paper, which is described as white and gold but actually looks like white and rose gold to my eye. But all four of them are beautiful.

Although I chose marble patterned self-adhesive vinyl for my initial product photography backdrops, I plan to expand my collection with other patterns and colors, such as wood and possibly floral patterns. The vinyl and foam boards are inexpensive enough to let me create a variety of looks for not a lot of money.

Foam Boards

For my trial run I used 3/16"-thick 20" x 30" foam boards. When those were successful and I tested them out with some product shots, I decided to buy some larger 3/8"-thick 30" x 40" foam boards that I am hoping to be able to use as a background for my skincare and makeup tutorial videos. (The ones I found on Amazon don't say how thick they are but have good reviews.) The thicker foam board is sturdier and less prone to warping, yet still extremely lightweight.

Creating the Faux Marble Photography Backdrops

The first step is to cover the foam board with the marble patterned self-adhesive vinyl. I found that this is really best done as a two-person job, with one person slowly peeling back about one inch of the vinyl backing sheet at a time as the other person uses an 18-inch ruler to smooth down that narrow section of vinyl down onto the foam board without creating air pockets or bubbles. Peel back another inch of the backing sheet, smooth down the vinyl against the foam board, and repeat until you get to the far edge of the foam board. Use a craft knife and a straight edge to trim the edges of the vinyl flush with the edge of the foam board, if necessary. Repeat the process to cover the remaining exposed foam board, aligning the marble patterns in a visually pleasing manner.

Tip: Press and smooth the self-adhesive vinyl against the foam board very firmly. If, despite your best efforts, you discover any air pockets or small bubbles, use the tip of a fine needle to prick a tiny hole at one edge of the bubble and  smooth/press out the air to expel it through the hole.

I bought four marble patterns (let's call them A, B, C, and D) and chose to cover two foam boards identically with pattern A on one side and pattern B on the reverse side, and then covered two more foam boards with pattern C on one side and pattern D on the other side. This allows me to mix and match the marble patterns when assembling the boards at right angles to create my product photography backdrops.

My husband rigged up a stand for me, but you could just as easily use some heavy bookends (and maybe a couple of clips) to hold the vinyl-covered foam boards at right angles on a flat surface.

Final Thoughts

If you want to create high-quality content without spending a fortune on props or surfaces, making DIY photography backdrops with marble-patterned self-adhesive vinyl over foam boards is a smart, economical, and stylish solution.

Whether you're creating backdrops for skincare tutorials, websites, Instagram Reels, Stories or other social media, or for other product shots, a marble background adds a polished, editorial touch to your content.

Tip: Use natural light and experiment with shadows to highlight the marble texture. It adds beautiful depth without distracting from your product.
