Grandpa's Advice Relayed in a Song Through These Lyrics

Grandpa's Advice Relayed in a Song Through These Lyrics

Since I write lyrics about life, I tend to cover many angles: motherhood, grandmothers, children, memories, reflections on growing older, and the emotional layers that come with it all.

The Story Behind The Lyrics "Grandpa's Diamonds"

Lately, I realized I've written quite a bit from those above perspectives, but I hadn't really shared the voice of a grandfather. Not deeply, anyway.

So I felt it was time to write something that touched that part of life, too, the relationship between grandfathers and grandsons, and the kind of quiet wisdom that can be passed down through that bond.

I wrote these lyrics on April 6th, 2026.

The Inspiration Behind The Lyrics

Dad lived into his late seventies. His life was like many, filled with goodness, trials, and tribulations. While he could be tough, he was always fair and had a rare ability to recognize others' potential and could spot those “diamonds in the rough.” If there was even a small spark of goodness in someone, he could see it, and many times he chose to acknowledge it.

As his daughter, I understood that side of him well. I believe he knew we all have a purpose, even if we sometimes need guidance to find the right path. However, staying real here, he would never talk like this and would probably just nod and move on if I ever said this to him!

My father, like every Dad, had his own beliefs. He made his mistakes, like anyone, but he was also shaped in those early years by the people who saw something in him worth believing in.

In his very early years, Mom told me stories about how certain people helped steer Dad in the right direction. But honestly, it was my mother who was his rock and motivation. I often wonder how different things might have been without those who chose to see his diamond in the rough. He was, in many ways, as my lyrics say, a recipient of grace, and he passed that grace along when he could.

This song reflects that perspective. Through Grandpa's voice, the quiet strength of a man who looks beyond a person's surface and exercises compassion over judgment. However, again, just being real, Dad wasn't a saint, and like all of us, he could be judgmental, but when it came to spotting something special in someone, he could see it.

The lyrics are a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful impact we can have is simply to see the goodness in others and help them see it in themselves.

Because one day, it could be us who needs that same grace.

That's the message in Grandpa's Diamonds.

Chasing Butterflies - My Story Behind the Lyrics From Childhood to Being a Grandparent

Chasing Butterflies - My Story Behind the Lyrics

I wrote the lyrics to Chasing Butterflies on January 16th, 2026.

I didn’t sit down planning to write lyrics that day. Lately, my thoughts have been drifting back to my childhood. I turned ten in 1970, and those years keep returning to me in small flashes.

One of my favorite things in the world back then was riding my 10-speed around town with my friend. We’d be gone most of the day, riding from one end of town to the other — from my house to hers, and back again, over to our school, and anywhere else our bikes took us.

There was no plan. We just rode, talked, laughed, and filled the day. If we ended up at her house and her mom was making dinner, I’d call home to let my mom know I was eating there. If she were at my place, she’d do the same. And when the streetlights came on, that was our signal to head home. It was just life, a fun life.

Some Things You Only Understand Later

Thinking about those years always brings me back to my parents. I miss them. That never really goes away. Back then, I had no idea how much they were shaping me, or how much strength they were quietly giving me just by being there. I only understand that now, looking back. That part of my life, having them in it, became a foundation for everything that came after.

Somewhere in all of that remembering, the idea of butterflies came to me.

When you’re a child, you chase butterflies without thinking. You don’t question it. You imagine, pretend, make up stories, and let your imagination lead the way. You play with dolls and trucks, create worlds, and believe in them completely. When you’re that young, imagination isn’t something you try to access — it’s just there, guiding you.

We Don’t Know Who We’re Becoming

Life changes us. It has to. A caterpillar doesn’t know it will one day become a butterfly, and we don’t know who we’re becoming either. When I picture myself at ten years old, riding my bike and chasing butterflies, I had no idea who I would be later in life. Writing this now at 65, I can see how much life transformed me — through love, loss, time, and all the things that shape us along the way.

Life also teaches you about moments. About how important it is to really be present with the people in front of you. About letting everything else fall away without trying, simply because the moment matters more than anything else.

That’s where this song brought me in the end — back to where I am now, as a grandmother.

When I’m with my grandchildren, playing with them, laughing, sharing small moments, it feels like a gift. An honor. In those moments, nothing else exists. I’m not thinking about the past or the future. I’m just there. Fully present. And without even realizing it at first, I’m chasing butterflies again.

Long Distance Friendship Lamps - Send Love and Light With Just a Touch

Long Distance Friendship Lamps - Review for a Great Gift Idea

I've been reading about these lamps for over a year now but haven't jumped in yet to get one. However, this one is on my list of original gift ideas.

Unique Gift Idea for Separated Loved Ones During Quarantine, or Any Reason

I've been thinking about getting this gift for both a friend of mine and my mother.

When I first read about this lamp, I was confused about how it worked. I won't pretend I've seen it in action, but I had to share this funky lamp with you all today.

What Are Friendship Lamps?

When you buy the lamps in pairs, you give one lamp to a friend, grandparent, parent, or anyone for that matter, and you keep the other lamp at your place.

Each of you set-up your lamp via WiFi. Yes, you both need WiFi.

When you touch your lamp, it lights up at the other end to let the other person know you're thinking of them.

Apparently, it cycles through colors when you touch it.

Plus, you can assign different people different colors. For example, each grandkid could have their own color that lights up when they touch the lamp to let grandma or grandpa know they're thinking of them. Popular grandparents could have these things going on and off all day!

Here's a Brief Video on How to Set The Lamps Up

Why A Friendship Lamp Would Be Nice to Share Between Long-Distance Loved Ones

Here are a few things that come to mind:

  • Grandparents may not have cell phones, and for that reason, they don't get the frequent communication that texting provides to most of us. My mom doesn't have a cell phone, so this lamp would be a nice way to say hello throughout the day. I do call her every night, but we could all be lighting up her life during the day.
  • For those who have trouble hearing, this is a quick way to send frequent loving light messages.
  • It's a lovely way to say goodnight when talking isn't possible.
  • Since it's as simple as a touch, loving light messages can be sent throughout the day.
  • Those who work many hours could bring one to the office and have the other at home for their spouse.
  • This is an ideal gift for besties. Best friends could share light messages whenever a little support or love is needed.
