Book Review-10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure

 Book Cover

In this latest book by Teri M Brown, she departs from her usual historical novels and gives us a very personal view into a major challenge in her life.  Can you imagine riding 3500 miles across the country on a tandem bike?  Well, that is exactly what Teri did and along the way she discovered some amazing things about herself.  Although this is about her personal adventure, it has so much to offer to each of us as we meet life's challenges and create adventures of our own.

Book Summary

The book gives us a look at the challenges and successes that the author had during her cross-country tandem cycle ride with her husband.  She accomplishes this through "10 Little Rules" that she feels helped her through the journey.  She leaves room at the end of each of the rules for the reader to reflect on how this rule could affect the readers life.

I loved the book and found it very inspiring.  Here are just a few of the key points I took away from the book.
  • Open Your Mind--don't always look for differences but rather look for common ground.
  • Setbacks--in any challenge you will have setbacks, you need to persevere and realize life is not in a straight line.
  • Enjoy the Downhills--sometimes we need to relax and enjoy the good times instead of always looking for the next challenge ahead.
  • Focus on the Now-stay in the present and it is much easier to get through.
  • Never Quit on a Bad Day--things will look up if you just give it time.
  • Continue to Dream--Hope and Dreams make your challenges come true.
There are many more insightful thoughts in the book, but I will leave them for you to discover as you read the book.  You can purchase it on Amazon at10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure .

Author Interview

I always like getting to know a bit about the author. Teri graciously agreed to answer my questions in an interview format.  Here are my questions and her answers.

1.       First of all, would you tell our readers a bit about your background.

I didn’t begin writing fiction manuscripts until 2017, and my first book, Sunflowers Beneath the Snow, launched in January 2022. However, I was not completely new to writing. I started my own business in 2000 helping small companies with their online presence by writing website copy, newsletters, and even email campaigns.

Although I wanted to write fiction, I was too afraid. At the time, I was living in an emotionally abusive relationship, and I couldn’t handle more rejection. However, when I finally left that relationship in 2017, the words started flowing from me and haven’t stopped.

Since the first book, I’ve also written An Enemy Like Me (Jan 2023) and Daughters of Green Mountain Gap (Jan 2024). As of February 14th, 2025, my fourth book, 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure, launched.

2.       I found this book to be very inspiring.  What motivated you to share this adventure with your readers.

My husband and I chose to ride across the United States on a tandem bicycle to raise money for Toys for Tots. But that was not my only reason. After getting out of that bad relationship, I didn’t feel like I had any worth, value, or anything to contribute. I decided I wanted some kind of adventure that would prove to the world that I wasn’t done living. It turns out that I was the one who needed that lesson!

As we rode mile after mile for 3102 miles, I began to heal. I also began to see life lessons in the journey we were on. Because I love to mentor others, especially women and teens struggling to find their worth, I felt my experiences could be helpful to others – and 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure was born.

3.       I have noted that this is your fourth book and the first three were written after the Double-Butted Adventure featured in this book.  In what way did your adventure inspire you to write the books?

I’m so glad you asked this question because the answer is “in all ways!” Let me explain.

As we were finishing up the last half-mile of our journey, my husband pointed up a hill to a flag. He told me it was the flag to the Marine Corps Memorial where we would end our ride. I started to cry. Then laugh. Then cry again.

At that moment, I realized something staggering. I, Teri M Brown, non-athlete, had successfully ridden across the United States on a tandem bicycle. I could do anything I put my mind to. It wasn’t a matter of “if I could do something.” Instead, it was a matter of “what did I want to do?” I knew the answer. I wanted to be an author.

As soon as we got home, I got to work. Fourteen months later, I held my first novel in my hand.

4.       What is the main thing you would like your readers to remember from this book?

You don’t have to be something special or extraordinary to do something big and bold and adventurous. Everything you need to succeed is already inside. All you have to do is want it and then start working toward the goal.

5.       Do you have any plans in the works or future books?

I’m currently finishing up a children’s book called Little Lola and Her Big Dream with illustrations by Lorri D Perini. I hope to have this out by early summer. I’m also working on a humorous contemporary novel about a woman going through menopause. Finally, I have an idea for another historical fiction, though it seems to have a mystery or suspense flair to it!

6.       Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these questions for our Review This readers.  Is there anything else you would like them to know about your books?

Although I cross genres – historical fiction, short stories, flash fiction, children’s books, creative non-fiction, and contemporary humor – all my books have one thing in common and that’s strong characters. I tell everyone I love to introduce readers to characters they’d love to invite to lunch.

If you enjoy character-driven fiction, I’d love to connect. Head on over to my website at www.terimbrown.com. There, you can connect with me on social media, join my twice-monthly newsletter, listen to my podcast Online for Authors and pick the next book on your TBR, purchase signed copies of my books, and/or reach out on my contact page.

Finger Puppet Board Books for Babies & Toddlers

Finger Puppet Board Books for babies and toddlers

My grandson absolutely loves his board books, but especially his finger puppet board book - let's review it here.

We found the Baby Bear Finger Puppet Book at a local shop and thought that our grandson might enjoy it, we couldn't have anticipated how much he would love the book. Firstly board books are always a favourite as he can turn the pages himself and can also fit them in his mouth for a quick taste test! Having a finger puppet as well just turns into a lot more fun.

The finger puppet has to have a hole to pop through and this hole is also really handy for little hands to hold on to when they are treating their book as a toy.

Putting your finger inside the bear puppet as you're reading and suddenly have Baby Bear popping up causes lots of giggles, although be warned sometimes your fingers can be gripped and squeezed really tightly!

When our grandson picks up the book by himself he is often pulling the puppet out and examining it with a frown - I'm sure he's wondering why it's not moving by itself unless Nanny or Pappy is reading it to him!

This was the only finger puppet book we could find locally and for some reason I hadn't thought about looking online for them (not really sure why when I'm always online!), this week I had a look on Amazon and there are so many different Finger Puppet Board Books available that he is getting a couple of other ones for his birthday.

I honestly believe that if you can make books fun when they are babies and toddlers you'll encourage a future bookworm and as a bookworm myself from a family of bookworms I do think that's a great thing.

Grandson and Grandparent approved.

Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life - Book Review

A Review of a Young Readers book by Wendy Mass

A collection of keys

I have a deep love of reading and never pass up an opportunity to read. I usually carry a book with me when I go out just in case there are free minutes to fill. Waiting with nothing to do is not an option when I could be filling that time with reading.

Recently I was at my son’s house waiting for the family to be ready to go out. Not realizing there would be a ‘wait time’, I neglected to bring along a book. Therefore, I looked around for something to read. My  grandson had a new book in the Young Readers genre and the title (Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life) looked intriguing. I began to read this book written for the 12- 14 year old age range, not planning on doing more than filling a few minutes of time with no intention of reading the entire book. I was wrong. Within two pages I was hooked.  The story turned out to be delightful and the writing captured my attention.  Thus, I ended up taking the book home with me to finish.  This is my review of the book and why I ended up reading a book written for Young Readers.

Synopsis of Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life

Jeremy Fink lives in a New York City apartment with his mom; his dad having died 5 years ago. Jeremy’s best friend, Lizzie, lives in the apartment next door with her dad. Being the same age and both being raised by single parents has brought them close.

As summer vacation begins, Jeramy plans on sleeping late, having a lazy summertime of leisure, going to the state fair, and anticipating his long-awaited thirteenth birthday in one month.

Then, a box arrives in the mail that changes everything.

First, we need to go back over everything that happened in that one month leading up to Jeremy’s birthday. There is the Big Mistake, the old man, the book, the lamp, the telescope, and this box, which started it all.

The mysterious wooden box is beautifully made and has keyholes on four sides. The top has engraved words:

The Meaning of Life: For Jeremy Fink to Open on his 13th Birthday.

A wooden box

The main problem is, the keys to the box are missing and the box is made so that only the keys will open it without destroying what’s inside. Jeremy and Lizzy set off to find the keys…. And thus their summer adventure begins.

Summary

The story is filled with delightful, though rather quirky, characters; a coming-of-age story with surprising twists and thought-provoking ideas. It has a tweens-oriented mystery theme plus many subtle positive messages for youngsters. A really good story especially for those eager to officially become a teenager.

How to Age Disgracefully by Clare Pooley

A while ago, I reviewed The Authenticity Project by Clare Pooley. It is the story of a solitary green notebook that brings together six strangers and leads to unexpected friendship, and even love.

An older couple walking

Clare Pooley, a British author, has a special knack of weaving together clearly flawed (as aren’t we all in one way or another), but lovable characters and allows them to prove how worthy they are. This was so true in The Authenticity Project, and is even more so in her latest novel ~ How to Age Disgracefully

Cast of Characters

Lydia - who takes on the  job of running the Senior Citizens’ Social Club now that her children are grown, expecting she will spend her time drinking tea and playing gentle games of cards.

Art - a failed actor who has somehow turned into a kleptomaniac, and his best friend, William.

Ruby - a banksy-style knitter who creates unusual public yarning projects.

Daphne - who just turned 70 and regrets the number of years she has hidden away from her rather checkered past. Hoping no one any longer pays attention to who she was, she now feels a need to find some friends and stop being so alone.

Ziggy - a teenage dad - and his adorable toddler daughter, Kylie.

And, last, but certainly not least as she eventually plays a large part in the story, is an orphaned geriatric dog named Margaret Thatcher (after the former British Prime Minister) who sometimes gets called simply ‘Margaret’ or “Maggie”, depending on which of the senior citizens you ask.

A Brief Synopsis of How To Age Disgracefully

When you find yourself approaching the later decades of life, you discover that age makes you invisible and secrets are easier to hide.

When this group of seniors come together at a senior citizens’ center that shares space with a daycare, hilarious results are in store.

When an accident involving a partial collapse of the  buildings’ ceiling causes the local council to threaten to close the club, the members of the Social Club join together with their tiny daycare friends next door, along with Ziggy, his toddler daughter and the geriatric dog, to save the building.

Their unorthodox methods may actually work, as long as their pasts, and the police, don’t catch up with them first. They certainly do turn out to be a far cry from the genteel 'tea & card playing' group Lydia thought they would be!

Summary

How to Age Disgracefully is an absolutely delightful story with a charming group of characters. Clare Pooley has outdone herself with another ensemble comedy filled with characters who prove we are limitless at any age.

The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella ~ A Book Review

Well I don't know about all of you but my friends and I are always on the lookout for something a little lighter and fun after all the stresses of the Holidays are over.  To that end we search out something to do or read that will bring a little levity to our days.  And that's when The Undomestic Goddess, by Sophie Kinsella landed on my desk!

All of my gal pals have had enough of cooking, cleaning, preparing meals and speical family dinners to last then till Easter at least and I'm sure some of you are feeling that way too!  Well, I have a solution for you and it's between the pages of this book.  The Undomestic Goddess makes you stop and think, "What could this possibly be about?"

Well, if you are in need of some light hearted reading that will have you laughing out loud, this just might be the book you are looking for.  Written in 2008 it's not new by any means of the imagination, but the story is so good that you just might want to pick it up more than once, or pick up some of Sophie Kinsella's other books.

So here's the synopsis and you decide if it's something you would enjoy:

Samantha Sweeting is a brilliant mind, smart as a whip and all she's ever wanted is to become a lawyer!  Well after passing the bar and getting her first job at the most prestigious law firm in town, she is well on her way to realizing her dreams.

After 7 years of putting in all the hours, weekend meetings, last minute preparations for a big legal fight, Samantha does one thing wrong and it will be her undoing!  She's made a mistake that any first year intern would never make and it's going to cost her the job of her dreams and the firm 50 million pounds!

Needless to say, her dreams of becoming a partner in this firm is  never going to happen!  How could she have been so stupid.  A super smart, brilliant legal mind does not forget to file papers to protect the company she works for from being sued or liable for that kind of money.  But, that's what has happened.

Samantha in her panic leaves the offices amid gasping partners that have just found out what she has done.  She is having a major melt down and can't focus at all on the next steps to take.

Finding herself on a train going somewhere, she literally stumbles onto the grounds of a very nice home!  She's hoping to get some clarity and the owners of the home are awaiting the arrival of a "Domestic" to help run their home.

Well, let's just say that Samantha in her crazed mental state accepts the position as the new housekeeper.  After all where else is she going to go?

I don't want to give to much more of the book away, let's just agree that what happens after this chance encounter and new job posting, Samantha gets a whole new education and the hilarity ensues.

cleaning woman

This book is classified as Chick-Lit, and so it is!  I would recommend it to anyone who needs a break from their normal genre of reading materials.  Sit back and enjoy page after page of the antics that happen when a lawyer turns up to clean the Loo's, do the laundry,  ironing and cook the dinners!

You will find yourself shaking your head and laughing out loud!  January is a great time of the year to start with a good belly laugh!  And you can start it right here!

Sophie Kinsella is witty, funny, and just very easy to read and if you enjoy this book there are other's that she has written as well.

Here are some of  her other titles that you might enjoy and there are many more:

Shopaholic and Sister

Can You Keep a Secret?

Shopaholic Ties The Knot

Shopaholic Takes Manhattan

Confessions of a Shopaholic

Just for added fun, many of these titles are free if you are a member of the Audible Audiobooks on Amazon.  And there are more there for you as well.

I have a few loaded up on my reader to take to the beach when we are away on holidays!

I hope you enjoy her writing as much as I have!

Book Review: In Search of the Old Ones (A Brief History of the Anasazi)

In Search of the Old Ones (A Brief History of the Anasazi) written by David Roberts is part personal outdoor travel memoir, part history lesson, and part examination of the controversies surrounding archeology methods over the decades. The author's descriptions of the areas he hiked made me feel as though I were along on the adventure in the beautiful, warm Southwest rather than snuggled up inside on the sofa during a Mid-Atlantic snow storm in January. I have always wanted to return to the Southwest but with the new appreciation and understanding I've gained from the book, I am seriously considering how to make the trip happen.

photo of Mesa Verde cliff dwelling

The Book and the Author

David Roberts is a climber, mountaineer, author, and was a professor of literature in the 1970s. While reading In Search of the Old Ones (A Brief History of the Anasazi) I would have thought his degree was in archeology rather than mathematics and english. It must be his love for adventure and the outdoors that shines from the pages of this story.

The Anasazi, Roberts explains why he chooses to use the name Anasazi as opposed to some that others use, were an ancient people who somehow disappeared from the US Southwest in the 1200s. They left behind stone homes, bits of pottery (at times a whole piece can be found, but that is increasingly rare), pictographs, spear/arrow heads and piles of shavings left from the process of chipping those from stone.

Roberts hiked (both alone and with others) the areas where the Anasazi ruins can be found. These areas included Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, Grand Gulch, Whiskers Draw, Moqui Canyon, and more. Many of the places are off the beaten path and can be difficult to find. People like me will never see these sites. Other sites are tourist attractions and open to the public. And as a result, are impacted by wear, tear, graffiti, theft, trash, and other issues that are not conducive to preserving ancient history. Other sites have been completely erased due to modernization.

Roberts describes those who have had a passion for finding these dwellings. Richard Wetherill, Quakers and Rancher, was not the first Anglo to find cliff dwellings but it became his lifelong hunt (until he was forced to stop).  A Ute Chief, Acowitz, told Richard Wetherill of the sacred place, a house in the cliffs bigger than all of the others. But the Utes never go there. Acowitz warned of disturbing the spirits of the dead. The Wetherills found this place, and many other sights.

Through this book, we read descriptions of those who believe that all of these items (pottery, bodies found at burial sites, and etc) should be kept in museums. We read other's descriptions of how many of these artifacts are lost, or stored out of sight in these museums. These conflicting ideas of how these ancient items should be preserved and displayed was very throught-provoking. Was Richard Wetherill a thief? Or was his beginning exploration and attempts at preservation a good thing? Perhaps we will never be able to decide.

Just as the various opinions about the disappearance of the Anasazi are at odds, did they leave due to drought and food source issues, were they killed by others, or did they kill themselves, I suppose we may never be able to decide.

Personal Thoughts

In retrospect, what I thought I knew about the Anasazi and their dwellings was it size of a bit of dust. I had been aware that there had been a group of people known as the Anasazi. I learned this on one of my drives out west. This group of people left behind stone buildings built into cliffs. During one of my drives out west, I stopped at the Aztec Ruins and then at Mesa Verde. I marveled at how a group of ancient people built these stone dwellings around a thousand years ago. The stone dwelling high in the side of a cliff at Mesa Verde was unimaginable and yet there it was. I walked through it.  But I hadn't wondered much beyond that about how these people lived.

I have always wanted to return and to take a more leisurely look around. Now that I have read this book by David Roberts, I have more understanding the difficult of learning why the Anasazi were suddenly no more. I understand why there are debates about how to store and display these artifacts and I especially understand how special it was to see the two sites I did see -- while they still remain and are open to the public.

I highly recommend this book for hikers and adventurers as well as folks who are strictly interested in the historical aspects of the Anasazi.

Book Review of ‘Middle of the Night’ by Riley Sager

While browsing through the shelf of ‘new’ mystery books at my local library recently, I came across one by an author who was new to me. It turned out to be a very good selection to read, as I have since discovered that Riley Sager is a bestselling author of nine previous books. His books have been highly rated by Amazon, with one being a Best of the Month Pick (Survive the Night - 2021), and with all of them consistently being listed in the Amazon Editors' favorites in the category of Mystery, Thriller, and Suspense books.

Moonlight shining through branches

Riley Sager’s Middle of the Night’ is his latest jaw-dropping thriller

Synopsis of Middle of the Night

The summer when Ethan Marsh was 10-years-old, he and his best friend and next-door neighbor, Billy, camped out in a tent in the backyard of his quiet New Jersey home located on a quiet, safe cul-de-sac.  The next morning,  Ethan woke up alone. Sometime during the night, someone had sliced the tent open with a knife.  Billy disappeared and was never seen again.

It is now thirty years later and Ethan has returned to his childhood home. After several years of marriage, he is once again alone and his parents have just retired to Florida. Ethan takes over the house he grew up in to be onsite to sell it for his folks. Ethan is reluctant to be there, as it brings back the memories of the night Billy disappeared and adds to the bad dreams he has been experiencing of that time.

Then Ethan begins to notice strange things happening. Someone seems to be roaming the cul-de-sac at odd hours, and signs of Billy’s presence keep appearing in Ethan’s backyard. Is this a cruel prank or has Billy (long thought to be dead) returned?

All this prompts Ethan to investigate what really happened that summer night so long ago. His journey reunites him with former friends and neighbors and leads him into the surrounding woods where Billy claimed ghosts roamed and where a mysterious institute on a crumbling estate plays a role.

Summary

As Ethan gets closer to the truth of what happened that long ago summer night, he realizes that no place is completely safe – and that the past can haunt the present.

A suspenseful psychological thriller with compelling characters and unexpected plot twists.

Eruption by Michael Crichton and James Patterson

Author Michael Crichton, famous for such works as Jurassic Park, ER and Twister, had a work he was passionate about before his untimely death in 2008. His wife, knowing how important this work was to him, kept the notes and partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it. She found that author in James Patterson.

Image of a Hawaiian volcano erupting

The end result was a book published in 2024 and is called “Eruption”.

Synopsis of Eruption

Mauna Loa, the world’s largest volcano located on the Big Island of Hawaii, last erupted in November of 2022.

In Eruption, the new book begun by Michael Crichton and finished by James Patterson, Mauna Loa is close to erupting again. The story is set just slightly in the future - the spring of 2025.

The early part of the larger story about this volcanic eruption of Mauna Loa became classified information just days after it happened in 2016 at the Hilo Botanical Gardens. It remained highly classified until recently when Mauna Loa once again became active.

As Chapter One begins, the action is on the beach in Hilo, Hawaii. The date is stated (April 24, 2025) and the time to eruption: 116 hours, 12 minutes, 13 seconds, is listed.

As the story proceeds throughout the chapters, we are kept informed of the time left until eruption.

Eruption’s main character is John MacGregor, a geologist who heads the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. We follow him and his team as they count down the hours and prepare for the eventual eruption of Mauna Loa. They know this will be a history-making event.

Meanwhile, a dangerous situation becomes known to MacGregor that could mean the end of life as we know it.  The U.S. Military has made a terrible mistake ~ a secret held for decades ~ that  is far more terrifying than any volcano.

Summary

Michael Crichton, master of the techno-blockbuster and James Patterson, popular storyteller and master of the modern thriller, have combined forces in this epic thriller. Eruption is so fast-paced you won’t be able to put it down until the last exciting sentence.

Reviewing Short Stories for the Holidays

Holiday Light with Bokeh
Holiday Decorations by mbgphoto

I love to read but, in the hustle, and bustle of all of the holiday preparations sometimes I just don't feel like getting into a full-size novel.  This year instead, I read three short stories with holiday themes.  This really worked well for me, and I enjoyed the short stories which were light reading.  All of these books were ones that I downloaded to my Kindle from Amazon and because I am a Prime member they were all free to read from Prime Reading.  They are also available to purchase in either paperback books, audio books, or digital books.

Christmas at the Little Paris Hotel

This book was written by Rebecca Raisin and can be ordered from Amazon at Christmas at the Little Paris Hotel .  What can be better than a delightful story taking place in Paris during the holidays?  In this story Anais receives an unwelcome surprise in her divorce settlement.  It is a run-down hotel in Paris.  She needs the money desperately but what is she to do with this run-down hotel.

She would really like to sell it and move on with her life, but this does not prove to be a viable option.  Her next thought is to turn it into a beautiful place and open by Christmas.  But is this even possible?  This is a must-read story full of romantic comedy and mystery!  Something for everyone.

Paris at Christmas (AI generated)

The Christmas Book Hunt

This book was written by Jenny Colgan and can be found at this link The Christmas Book Hunt.  The setting for this story is London and small towns in the UK.

The main character, Mirren is on a hunt to find a rare book for her Aunt Viola, who is dying.  Viola remembers this book from her youth and her dying wish is to once again see this book before she dies.  The book is rare and hard to find because the author Robert Louis Stevenson had teamed up with a famous author who did illustrations for the one book.

Mirren is determined to find this book for her aunt and her search takes her to several small towns that have lots of rare book shops.  Along the way she runs into a handsome stranger who, unknown to Mirren is searching for the same book for his uncle's rare book shop.  All of this is taking place in the days leading up the Christmas.

Holiday Hideaway

Mary Kay Andrews, the author of over 30 award winning novels, wrote this delightful short story.  You can find it at the following link.  Holiday Hideaway

In this enchanting story, Tilly is not very happy about the upcoming holidays.  She is recently divorced and down on her luck, so she is staying in one of her companies unoccupied rentals until her new apartment is ready.  All is going along until the owner, George,  shows up to sell his granduncles house.  He is staying in the house so Tilly hides out in the attic.  Fun ensues as Tilly tries to avoid running into George.

This story is taking place just before Christmas and you will need to read it to find out what Christmas magic happens.

Happy Reading and Happy New Year
