A Holiday Review
Ronald Reagan designated the month of July as Ice Cream Month in 1984 during his presidency. It has become a time to enjoy ice cream with family and friends and try new flavors.
Ice Cream month also includes Ice Cream Day, which is celebrated on the third Sunday of July.
Celebrating National Ice Cream Month
It is easy to celebrate Ice Cream Month during its designated month of July and all year long. There are so many flavors and forms of ice cream that you could do a different one for probably the whole month.
Ice cream is a frozen dessert made from dairy products (milk and cream), sometimes combined with fruits, nuts, and various flavors.

Ice Cream can be enjoyed as a scoop in a cone, plain in a dish, as part of a Sundae, and in the form of specialty cones and bars (Drumsticks, Ice Cream Sandwich, etc.) and novelty bars like Snickers and Strawberry Shortcake.
There are many flavors of ice cream, and many brands to choose from. They range from a really creamy and delicious one made by Blue Bunny, which is very high in calories, but oh, so good, to brands for Keto diet plans and those with diabetes. Everyone, it seems, can enjoy ice cream, a very versatile dessert.
There is also homemade ice cream made using an ice cream maker. We had one when our children were small (many moons ago) that was not electric like today's machines, but used a hand-crank. More work, but fun. Our specialty in the summer was homemade Peach ice cream. Very yummy!
Some Ice Cream Fun Facts
- Sunday is the day more ice cream is sold than any other day of the week. Maybe that’s where the word ‘Sundae’ comes from. 🙂
- It takes about 50 licks to finish one scoop of ice cream in a cone.
Ice Cream Holidays
In addition to having a whole month dedicated to celebrating ice cream (July), there are individual days set aside to enjoy tasting particular flavors.
There is also National Ice Cream Day on the third Sunday of July each year.
- July 1 - Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day
- July 13 - National Nitrogen Ice Cream Day
- July 17 - Peach Ice Cream Day
- July 20 - Ice Cream Soda Day
- July 23 - Vanilla Ice Cream Day
- August 19 - Soft Ice Cream Day

America’s top ten ice cream flavors include the traditional three, with Vanilla being #1, Chocolate listed at #2 and Strawberry coming in at #8. Then we have the classic Neapolitan, which is made of blocks of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry side by side in the same container. Neapolitan ice cream comes in at #10 on the list. We all love our ice cream. We also hand an ice cream maker many years ago when our kids were small. We have many memories of those days of making our own ice cream with the kids. Thanks for the reminding me of those days.
ReplyDeleteMaking your own ice cream is, indeed, a fun activity, Sam. We certainly enjoyed ours, as did our neighbors at our block summer picnic. :)
DeleteWhat a fun review! When I was a kid on Sunday afternoon we would take a ride and get ice cream cones.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mary Beth. Our favorite ice cream activity in the summer growing up near Lake Ontario was to go down to the beach and get a 'frozen custard'. Also the hot fudge Sundaes or vanilla milkshakes my uncle used to take my brother and I out for on a Saturday afternoon. Ice cream in its many forms is a dandy treat.
DeleteJuly is definitely the right month to make our National Ice Cream Month in the US since it is the hottest month across our nation. It is the perfect month for that delicious cool down treat. My favorite ice cream flavor depends on which one I am eating at any given time. As for the 50 licks, I don't have to patience to lick ice cream. I bite it! Therefore, I would never know how many licks it takes to eat a scoop of ice cream if you had not told me :)
ReplyDeleteBiting an ice cream cone - funny, Sylvestermouse. I prefer a dish of ice cream to a cone, except for Drumsticks! LOL. And, I guess I DO bite those. :)
DeleteI adore ice cream! I’m so grateful that there are delicious sugar-free options (my favorite sugar-free ice cream brand is Rebel Creamery). I love mint chocolate chip, peach, butter pecan praline, and peppermint stick ice cream the most.
ReplyDeleteButter pecan praline is indeed a delicious flavor, Margaret. Thanks for your visit to my ice cream review.
DeleteI love vanilla ice cream. It's my favorite. When I have to pick a sundae, I love hot-fudge sundaes. I'm watching my food intake and right now I could really go for a vanilla ice cream cone!
ReplyDeleteVanilla ice cream can't be beat - probably the most versitile flavor of all. And hot fudge sundaes are my very favorite. Thanks, Barbara.
DeleteNo wonder July is one of my favorite months! But I must admit that any month with 28 days in it is a good month for ice cream! I will celebrate this month wisely and eat ice cream often! Thanks Pat Austin for giving me good reason to get into that bucket of goodness!
ReplyDeleteAlways nice to have a legitimate excuse to eat ice cream. Thanks, Olivia.
