The Calming Effects of Crafting

 A Health Review

A basket of yarns

Crafting projects are good for your brain and helpful to your body.  Positive benefits are found no matter the medium you use. Crafting can elevate your mood, improve your self-confidence and reduce stress. Mentally it can decrease cognitive decline. Physically, it improves both gross and fine motor movements and control.

Who would have thought that a fun hobby could have health benefits? That it could lower your blood pressure and reduce tension, giving you an overall sense of well-being.

Benefits of Yarn Crafting

All crafting is helpful, but yarn crafting is particularly beneficial.

Knitting and crochet can reduce anxiety and relieve stress.  The repetitive action of these crafts help release serotonin, your body’s feel-good hormone, which is a natural anti-depressant. What a fun way to feel happier.

Crocheting and knitting help improve fine motor skills and have been shown to be effective in maintaining dexterity.

Knitting in a social setting reduces loneliness and isolation.

The creative process of crochet, providing a creative outlet for self-expression,  can boost self-esteem and instill a sense of accomplishment.

The calmness of these crafts can help reduce insomnia. By getting relaxed into a repetitive rhythm with your crochet hooks or your knitting needles, your mind is allowed to unwind.

Crochet can  be a form of meditation. By allowing you to focus on the task at hand, concentrating on the stitches and following a pattern, your mind becomes present-moment focused - helping you to achieve a meditative state.

Summary

So, don’t forget to set aside a period of time each day for the health benefits of crafting. Get out your favorite craft project and enjoy a relaxing time.

If you don’t already have a craft hobby, consider the benefits of taking one up. Following are a few suggestions for How-To learning.

  1. I have always been a “serial crafter.” I have worked with leather, yarn (crochet), fabric, polymer clay, precious and base metal clay, milled metals, gemstones, beads, and more. I can definitely attest to the benefits you describe. There is an extra level of absorption and, no doubt, health benefits when I am designing as well as handcrafting my work. Thanks for this interesting and valuable take in the health benefits of crafting, Ms. Elf!

    1. I've tried just about all crafts at one time or another over the years, except maybe paper crafts. I enjoy crochet and needlepoint the best. So I know how you feel about being a 'serial' crafter. Thanks for your visit.

  2. From experience, I knew that crafting had a calming effect on me but I never really questioned why or if it would be true for everyone. The sense of accomplishment when a project is finished is another reason I enjoy a variety of crafts. Even if I can buy something for less than it would cost for me to make it, I still place a greater value on things I have made or on things loved ones have made (like mouse hot pads). Clearly, crafting is a win win all the way around! Thanks for the additional information.

  4. I used to do a lot of crafting. I crocheted, made things with plastic canvas and yarn, did cross stitching, and more. Then I found painting. All of it is therapeutic. It's nice reading an article as to the why of it.

  5. I couldn't agree more, crafting is absolutely calming - especially crocheting. I was deep into it years ago, and don't dare start up again, because if I do, I'll never go online again - it's addictive in a good way :)

  6. Crafting is something that everyone should try at some point in their lives. Even the guys should try something with their hands that results in something beautiful. Everyone needs a little "creative" time and crafting is just one way to do just that! Thanks for this lovely review and suggestion.

  7. I have been thinking I should take up a craft. Especially in the winter I would like something that gives me similar benefits to how gardening helps me in the other seasons. I had no idea crafting would have so many benefits though! Thankyou for your review and information about the benefits of crafting.
