Most of us are pretty good about putting sunscreen on our faces and necks before we head outside. But if you’re like I used to be, you might not give much thought to your hands. The truth is, they’re one of the first areas to show sun damage—age spots, thinning skin, and those little freckles that pop up over the years. And, of course, unprotected hands are just as vulnerable to skin cancer as the rest of your body.

The Best, Most Attractive Sunscreen Makeup for Mature Skin

If you have followed my posts here on Review This Reviews or on social media, you know that I am a 70-year-old woman who became a serious skincare enthusiast at age 65. Using a great anti-aging skincare routine consistently has helped me turn back the clock and look much younger than my chronological age. It has also helped me combat those pesky age spots AKA sun spots AKA hyperpigmentation that are the late-blooming results of having spent too many years unprotected by sunscreen.

Today, I know that daily sunscreen application, regardless of the weather, is the most important step in my skincare routine. In general, I prefer tinted mineral sunscreens and rarely feel the need to wear foundation.

For everyday wear, I tend to gravitate toward Undefined Beauty's R&R Sun Serum, which is a sheer, liquid, broad-spectrum sunscreen with a lovely serum texture and SPF 50 PA++++ sun protection, as well as skincare ingredients like Niacinamide. I use the Light/Neutral shade, which is nearly invisible on my skin after I rub it in and has zero white cast. Alternatively, I use DRMTLGY Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46, a moisturizing tinted sunscreen with a mix of both chemical and physical sun filters and a choice of a dewy or matte finish (I prefer the dewy version), among a few other favorite sunscreens.

However, if I want to look a bit more polished and plan to wear a bit of makeup, I most often reach for my Toty Illumina CC Creamy Compact SPF 50+, which is a tinted mineral sunscreen and foundation hybrid that provides lightweight complexion coverage and a natural-looking satin finish. It costs a bit more than drugstore foundations with SPF, but provides much better sun protection and has additional anti-aging skincare benefits while giving a beautiful skin-like finish that is especially flattering to mature complexions.

IMPORTANT! When using most foundations with SPF, the amount of product you would need to apply to get the stated SPF protection would result in a very thick, cakey application, which is why most sunscreen foundations actually don't provide enough sun protection. They are also difficult to reapply during the day, which is important if you are going to be outdoors or by a sunny window.

The matte shadows could be used alone for an extremely subtle, conservative look, or can be paired with the metallic shimmer shades for a fancier evening or special occasion makeup look.

Maybelline is known for high-quality, highly pigmented makeup at very affordable prices. This would be great for anyone from a teen to a senior who enjoys "putting on a face."

Note: Although this eyeshadow palette comes with two double-ended sponge applicators, I would highly recommend giving your gift recipient a set of good makeup brushes if they don't already own some.

The Best Affordable Gel Ice Globes for Skincare and Muscle Relaxation

Today I am reviewing the newest tool in my skincare and body care arsenal, an affordable set of two 360° rotating, thermal gel-filled, stainless steel ice rollers that can be used not only chilled for facial tightening, lymphatic drainage and depuffing, but also either cold or warm for easing sore muscles after a workout, strain, or injury.

I have been lucky enough to find an extremely knowledgeable and experienced licensed esthetician and spa & salon owner whose product recommendations have transformed my skin remarkably over the past four or five years (even though we have never met in person). I trust her recommendations wholeheartedly and she has never steered me wrong. She also doesn't believe in recommending anything that doesn't have clinically proven results. So, when she shares a skincare recommendation, I'm all ears.

One of the tools she recommends is a set of gel-filled stainless steel ice globes that can be chilled and used on the face for a lifting and tightening effect and lymphatic drainage massage to depuff the face, especially the undereye area. The ones she sells rotate 360° so they glide over the skin without dragging against it and are filled with a gel that helps maintain the cold temperature for a long time. There is no question they are a high-quality product. Unfortunately, at $225 at the time of this post's publication, they are also way out of my budget.

I decided to research less expensive alternatives with similar features and was able to find a set of two 360° rotating, thermal gel-filled, stainless steel ice rollers — with two added benefits over the more expensive set — for less than $25 (at the time of this post's publication). I have been extremely pleased with them!

Usage Tips

Chill in the Fridge: For optimal cooling without making them too cold, store the globes in their case in the refrigerator rather than the freezer. This keeps them at a comfortable temperature that’s effective yet gentle on the skin. If you desire a more penetrating cold, for example, to calm inflamed muscles, you may chill them in the freezer inside their storage case, but I wouldn't use them frozen on the face.

Easy Warm-Up: To use the globes warm, simply place them in warm water for 10 minutes. This option is excellent for soothing sore muscles and relieving tension. If they cool off too quickly or you desire more warmth, try warming them in slightly hotter water for a longer time.

Go Slowly and Gently: When using the globes, apply gentle pressure, especially around sensitive areas like the eyes. Take your time with each stroke to fully benefit from the massage and cooling effects.

My Experience With the DRMTLGY Pumpkin Enzyme Mask

After using this mask once a week for a few months, I’ve noticed significant improvements in both the texture and appearance of my skin.

Here’s what stood out:

Texture & Consistency

The mask has a soft, creamy texture that feels luxurious and comfortable on the skin. Unlike many exfoliating masks that can feel gritty or abrasive, this one is smooth, making the application process enjoyable and relaxing.

Warming Sensation

Upon application, the mask has a self-warming effect, which I found to be incredibly relaxing. The warmth isn’t intense or uncomfortable but provides a soothing sensation that enhances the spa-like experience. This warming effect is said to improve blood flow, which may further enhance the skin’s radiance.

Exfoliation

One of the standout features is how effective the exfoliation is without being too harsh. The pumpkin enzymes and jojoba beads work together to provide both chemical and physical exfoliation, removing dead skin cells and leaving my skin feeling soft and smooth after each use. I noticed that my skin looked visibly brighter, and my makeup application was smoother due to the improved texture.

How to Use This Enzyme Mask

1. After cleansing, apply a generous, even layer of the mask to clean, dry skin. You can apply it to just your face or to your face, neck, and décolletage.
2. Massage slowly and gently (don't scrub!), enjoying the warming sensation until it dissipates.
3. Leave the mask on for about 10 minutes.
4. Wet your hands and massage again, slowly and gently.
5. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

After rinsing and patting dry with a clean face towel, my skin feels smoother, more refined, and better able to absorb the rest of the products in my skincare routine.

How Often to Use

You can use this exfoliating enzyme mask 1–3x/week. Since I also use other exfoliating products a couple of times a week, I use this mask only once a week. 

I recently did an at-home Jessner's chemical peel (the first in what will be a monthly series over 6–8 months. I used this DRMTLGY Pumpkin Enzyme Mask a week after I applied the chemical peeling solution to help remove the last small remnants of the flaking and peeling skin after most was gone. Here's how my 70-year-old skin looked immediately after using the DRMTLGY Pumpkin Enzyme Mask and applying my routine skincare (except my tinted mineral sunscreen, which I applied after taking the photo) on the seventh day after my Jessner's peel. 

Note: The even tone and smooth texture are a function of both the peel and the enzyme mask as well as my consistent commitment to an effective daily skincare routine tailored to my skin goals and concerns.
