Light Therapy Benefits for SAD

Light Therapy Benefits for S.A.D.

If you're looking for a way to boost your physical and mental well-being, here's a suggestion for you - a light therapy lamp.

We've recently purchased a light therapy lamp and can attest to the benefits listed below.

These lamps are designed to mimic the effects of natural sunlight and can provide a range of health benefits. In this article, I'll share with you five key benefits of using a light therapy lamp.

  1. A Mood and Energy Boost: Have you ever felt sluggish and down in the dumps? Light therapy lamps can help regulate your internal clock and lift your mood, giving you a boost of energy throughout the day. Just shining a bright light on yourself in the morning can make a world of difference in terms of mood and outlook. The instructions for the one we purchased say approximately 20 minutes shining toward your face is a good place to start, in the morning.
  2. Said to Help with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): During the winter months, it's common to feel down due to the lack of sunlight. This is called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and can be tough to deal with. Light therapy lamps can help by providing a bright light that simulates sunlight and relieves the symptoms of SAD.
  3. Claims to Improve Sleep: A good night's sleep is essential for overall health, and light therapy lamps can make a difference. These lamps regulate the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for regulating sleep, allowing you to have a more restful night. Just expose yourself to bright light in the morning, and you'll be amazed at how much better you sleep. Personally speaking, I feel it has helped our loved one in this area.
  4. Says it Can Reduce Stress and Anxiety: Light therapy lamps have a calming effect and can help lower stress and anxiety levels. By regulating your internal clock and improving your mood, light therapy lamps can help you feel more relaxed and at ease.
  5. They Apparently Help with Enhanced Cognitive Function: Bright light has been shown to enhance cognitive function and improve alertness, making it a great tool for anyone who needs to be sharp and focused. Whether you're a student studying for exams or a professional working long hours, a light therapy lamp can help keep you sharp and focused.

In terms of our personal experience with the light therapy lamp we purchased, it hasn't been long enough for us to assess whether the five points above helped our family member. However, I feel it has helped compared to where we were prior to having the light.

Light therapy lamps provide a natural and effective way to improve your physical and mental well-being. From boosting mood and energy levels to reducing stress and anxiety and improving sleep, there are many benefits to using a light therapy lamp.

So, if you're looking for a way to boost your health, give it a try, I'm glad we did! You might be surprised at the positive impact it has on your life.

Here's the Light therapy light we purchased, and are happy with.

Book Review of ‘In Cold Chamomile’

 A Valentine’s Day Cozy Mystery

Image of a cup of tea with heart-shaped cream on top

In Cold Chamomile

Author Joy Avon brings us Book #3 in her “A Tea and a Read Mystery” series.

Story Locale: Heart Harbor, Maine

Time: February

Event: Valentine’s Day

Main Characters: Callie Aspen, Great-Aunt Iphy Aspen, Deputy Ace Falk

Story Plot

In Cold Chamomile Book Cover
Callie Aspen and her Boston Terrier Daisy have moved to Heart Harbor, Maine where she helps out her great-aunt Iphy in her aunt’s vintage tearoom - Book Tea. The tearoom’s sweet treats all have a bookish clue.

As the story of In Cold Chamomile begins, Callie is getting ready for the town’s big Valentine’s Day event to be held at Haywood Hall, a famous old mansion recently renovated.

A cup of tea on a tray with a book and flowers

The event has six main themes all based around love, including a musical performance, the tearoom’s sweet treats brought by Callie and Aunt Iphy from their tea shop, and a second hand book market where you can ‘bring a book, take a book’. Additionally, a book expert is on hand to appraise (and buy) vintage books brought in.

But, trouble is brewing in the form of an argument the librarian has with the book expert. Plus, the baritone who arrives for the music program turns out to be someone Aunt Iphy recognizes as an old acquaintance she had hoped never to meet again.

The event appears to be going well until a dead body is discovered. Suspicion points to quite a few people who had reasons to want the victim dead.

Enter Deputy Ace Falk to investigate. Falk not only is currently acting Sheriff due to the Sheriff being ill, he is also the boyfriend of Callie Aspen. In the first two books in this Tea and Read mystery series, Callie had ‘helped’ solve previous murders (of course getting herself in trouble and danger as the heroine in cozy mysteries tend to do). This time, Ace wants Callie to stay away from any ‘amateur sleuthing’ because he worries that her impulsiveness will endanger her. But when Aunt Iphy’s friend-from-the-past (the baritone) is suspected of the murder, both Iphy and Callie set out to clear his name.

Summary

A delightful cozy mystery that is light-hearted and easy to read involving books and tea and a murder to solve. A fun Valentine’s Day read.

Note: All three of the books in the ‘Tea and Read Mystery Series have ‘tea’ names (In Peppermint PerilSweet Tea and Secrets and In Cold Chamomile). Described as “The Perfect Brew” by a fellow cozy mystery writer, this is a delightful new series.

Automobile Windshield Snow Cover for Ice and Snow Reviewed

Windshield Snow Cover
A few years ago, we were picking up a family member at the airport when I saw an SUV decked out with this windshield cover.  I thought it was genius!  Ice and snow were imminent in our area that day.  I am certain the driver of that vehicle didn't wish to return to a windshield that needed to have ice and/or snow scraped off before they would leave.

I went home that very night and did a search for a windshield cover that would fit our SUV.  Since we park it on our driveway, it is constantly exposed to whatever weather hits.  Unfortunately, in our area, we are more likely to get ice or at best, a wintry mix.  It is a very cold job to scrap a windshield.

We have plastic scrapers in all of our vehicles in case we are caught out when the weather moves in.  However, this windshield snow cover is easy to carry in the car and cover the windshield on a work day if ice or snow are predicted.

Driving on ice is dangerous enough.  We don't need to exhaust ourselves scrapping the windshield before we get behind the wheel to drive home.

I do recommend keeping a large plastic trash bag in the car for temporary containment of the wet windshield cover for the drive home, after it has been used.  That will protect the vehicle carpeting.  The cover does come with a storage bag, but I would only put a dry cover in the storage bag.

Windshield Snow Cover

Windshield Snow Cover, FOVAL Car Windshield Cover for Ice and Snow Frost with Side Mirror Protector, Safe Luminous Strip, 4-LayerCheck PriceI found there are many choices for windshield covers.  I opted for an inexpensive one with great reviews.  With our icy winters, I expected to need to replace it after a few years of use.  Thus far, replacing it has not been necessary.

The Foval cover is waterproof, snow-proof, frost-proof and won't scratch your windshield or paint.  The cover does extend over the windshield wipers and covers the exterior door mirrors.  Having the protective bottom layer is just as important as being waterproof.

It only takes few minutes to put the cover over the windshield and "tie" it down.  We attach the bottom straps to the wheels (as shown in the manufacturer image on the right), but we literally tie the back straps to our luggage carrier on top of the SUV instead of attaching them to the back wheels.  That is what works best for our SUV which sits up higher than the vehicle in the photo on the right.

As you can see in the images below, our SUV has folding side mirrors.  Instead of inserting the mirrors into the mirror pockets, we fold our mirrors in and simply cover them with the cover.  If we used the windshield cover on one of our cars, it would be necessary to cover the mirrors with the cover mirror pockets so it is wonderful to have them as part of the cover.

This definitely beats trying to tape cardboard over the windshield!

Above the Bay of Angels - Book Review

girl in a garden
Above the Bay of Angels
Above the Bay of Angels is a stand-alone book by Rhys Bowen, an author that has best-selling books in her mystery series.  I had never read this author before but after reading this delightful historical mystery, I will be sure to look for more books by this author.  I found this book very intriguing.

The Book on Amazon

Below is a link to the book on Amazon if you should wish to purchase it.  If you are a member of Amazon Prime you will find it in the Kindle books you can read for no charge.

Book Summary

At the beginning of the book, you meet Bella a young girl who is sent into servitude when her mother dies, and her father can no longer support her and her sister.  In the years she is a servant she works her way up to working in the kitchen and becoming a cook.

In a bizarre twist of fate, Bella runs into a young woman in the streets of London who has been hit by a carriage.  As Bella comforts her the young woman thrust a letter into Bella's hand and then dies.  The letter contains an invitation to interview for Queen Victoria's cooking staff that very afternoon.  Bella is torn with what to do, but soon decides that the letter will do the young woman no good.  Bella poses as the young woman, Helen Barton and is able to obtain a position at Buckingham Palace.

Helen (Bella) carries on with her pretense and is able to find herself in favor with Queen Victoria in her cooking skills.  When one of the cooks cannot make a trip to Nice with the Queen's staff Helen (Bella) is able to make the trip.  Helen has some delightful adventures both with cooking and the people she meets in Nice.  A mystery ensues when one of the Queen's relatives is poisoned by some food.  When a detective from London is called in Bella fears her cover will be blown.

The book is a wonderful, lighthearted mystery.  There are many cooking references, so if you are interested in food and cooking you will also enjoy this mystery.  I'll leave you now to read the book and find out if Bella finally finds peace and happiness.

Funny Grill Master Aprons

It's still winter here in Western New York, but grilling season will be here soon. There is nothing I like better than being outside cooking or smoking meats on my grill and smoker.

There are many essential tools needed for the grill master, meat thermometers, gloves, towels, cooking utensils, cleaning equipment, and most important of all a funny apron.

Funny Grill Master Aprons
Grill Masters funny aprons - Reviewed

In the photo above I'm preparing to wrap my Babyback Ribs to go back on the smoker for another two hours. Whenever I'm grilling or smoking meats you will find me wearing my funny apron.

My son got this funny apron for me a couple of years ago for Father's Day. In case you can't the whole thing, the apron reads:  "I LIKE MY BUTT RUBBED AND MY PORK PULLED" Whenever we have friends over and I'm grilling they all just get the biggest kick out of it.

Not only is my apron funny, but it does protect my clothes from any splashing of sauces that I'm using, and any sparks from the wood when I'm tending the firebox on the smoker. It also has two handy pockets up front to hold my phone, meat thermometer, or towel while I'm cooking.

Back to the photo, yes, that is a bottle of Bourbon in my hand because I'm smoking my Honey Bourbon Babyback Ribs  Click the link to get the full recipe and method of these delicious ribs. If you don't have a smoker that's okay you still make these on your grill, or even in the oven, either way, don't forget your apron.

By the way, it's easy to clean your apron, just wash it on the cold cycle and air dry cycle in your dryer.

You will find a full range of funny aprons on Amazon. Any one of them is a perfect birthday or Father's Day gift for the grill master in your life or for yourself.

A Personal Review Of The Inspirational Gardener Geoff Hamilton

Geoff Hamilton Statue

This article is a personal review of the late great Geoff Hamilton and how he inspired my lifelong love of gardening.

I grew up watching the TV programme Gardeners World. My parents always watched it and so as a young child when I was around and not playing outside, I watched it too.

I remember watching Gardeners World on TV before Geoff Hamilton presented it but it was Geoff Hamilton when I was a little older who completely captured my gardening heart and imagination and inspired me to love plants and try to be a gardener.

Yellow Tulips

As a child my parents always gave me a small plot of land to grow easy plants and quick growing vegetables and I think that was a great thing to do and gave me as a young child the joy of gardening with quick results!

As I grew older I wanted to know more and pre-internet my main sources to learn about gardening were books and gardening programmes on TV.

Geoff Hamilton seemed so approachable, and accessible and appeared to be talking to me directly. He had a natural easy way about him and clearly a passion for gardening and plants in all his TV appearances and books. He was that rare combination of a talented presenter and expert gardener who could teach in an accessible and relaxed manner.

Greenhouse Barnsdale Gardens

In fact, unlike some presenters of TV shows, I don't think he saw it as about him at all but rather about teaching us how to look after plants and flowers, vegetables and trees, how to design and make, build and tend and I loved him for it. I could really relate to his honest, rational and logical approach to gardening.

I also really related to his ideals around organic gardening and his approach to gardening in a wildlife-friendly manner. Both these ideals were quite new and radical at the time when he started his TV shows and wrote his books and they completely resounded with me.

Garden Barnsdale

Without a doubt, Geoff Hamilton was a person I would really have loved to have met in person and is one of my regrets in life that I did not. However, He does live on in Barnsdale gardens, now run by his son Nick Hamilton. You can feel Geoff's presence there and his books are wonderful to read and learn from.

For many years as a young adult gardening had to take a back seat to my life. I was at University and then working in a city, renting different places and I had no garden. I had to make do with a window box or a few pots, or the windowsill.

Of course, I always wanted my own garden and would help my parents with theirs whenever I went back home, but I wanted my own. It was not until we got married and then bought our own home that I got to flex my own gardening muscles both figuratively and practically!

So then I returned to Geoff Hamilton and read and re-read his books and watched his videos to learn and understand all I could, He truly was my gardening inspiration and teacher.

Orangery flowers pink and purples

When he left Gardeners World with health issues I was very sad and then his subsequent death really affected me. I do now like to watch Monty Don, Alan Titchmarch and others who I still learn a lot from, but I have to say it was Geoff Hamilton who was my original inspiration, who along with my parents made me into a person who has a deep love of plants, wildlife, nature and gardens.

I was so lucky a couple of years ago to visit Geoff Hamiltons gardens where he filmed all of Gardeners World and other programmes at Barnsdale in Rutland in UK.

dark red tulips

I was beyond excited to visit this wonderful place I had watched for years on TV!! I was not disappointed, quite the opposite. I have to admit for me this was an emotional visit and I experienced a full range of emotions from joy to sadness, awe and amazement, tears and laughter.

The first thing to greet you when you enter the garden is Geoff Hamilton's gardening jeans!! I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this place of my gardening hero.

Geoff Hamiltons Jeans

My husband and I spent two whole days walking around, taking notes and photographs. we absolutely loved it. We originally intended a day visit only but we just had to go back again within the same weeks holiday.

I recall watching how Geoff built each garden and how gardens evolve over time. I loved that he often gave different options for a garden a more expensive one and a less expensive version to achieve a similar effect. In this way he made gardening financially accessible for most people whatever the budget and size of the garden.

He also showed us how to make and build much of the hard landscaping, fencing, ponds and brickwork and for me always seemed to explain it in a manner I felt "I could give that a go".

Even within the same week there were new things to see and things we did not notice the first time around. I wish I had visited years ago and I hope I make it back again.

Herb garden

The whole site is divided up into smaller gardens you can walk around and into each beautiful individual garden. There are many gardens to explore including ones Geoff built from scratch and filmed from the beginning.

Some of the gardens include the Ornamental kitchen garden, The Gentlemans cottage garden, Artisan cottage garden, Wildflower border, A Rock Feature, Bog garden, Courtyard gardens, a Children's garden, a Japanese garden and Herb garden plus many more. Many of these were designed and built by Geoff.

Japanese garden

In this way with individual gardens of a manageable size, it is quite easy to walk around and appreciate each garden on its own and it does not become overwhelming. There is a welcoming, friendly atmosphere. You feel that you could take planting ideas,  features or make similar designs in your own garden.

We went in late May and I do think it would be worth visiting these gardens at least 4 times a year in each season to fully appreciate all the planting and care taken throughout the seasons.

Our own garden is quite established and it would be a mammoth task to change it now. However, we have decided when we move house that we will base our new design on one of Geoff's gardens.

We will of course adapt the design to the space we have and add our own particular nuances and special or favourite plants and we so look forward to building and growing it.

Kitchen garden flowers and vegetables

Geoff Hamilton has written a number of wonderful books and I think I have most of them. I will write reviews on them in time to come but wanted to list just a couple of them here so you can start to discover the down to earth brilliance of this most humble, gentle and wonderful gardener.

Cookbook Review - Farm to Table Cookbook: Seasonal Recipes Made with Farm-Fresh Ingredients

I was thrilled when I recently won an item during a homestead giveaway. Even more thrilled when I learned it was the Farm to Table Cookbook: Seasonal Recipes Made with Farm-Fresh Ingredients. This cookbook is full of recipes for those farm fresh items that you've grown or that you've purchased from the local farmer's market.

Learning to grow and prepare more of my own fresh vegetables is a goal of mine. I like vegetables, I just don't have a wide repertoire of vegetable recipes. I grew up with a vegetable menu limited to potatoes, green beans, peas, and carrots for the most part. As an adult, I branched out and found that I love summer squash, roasted beets, spinach and different varieties of tomatoes. But I still either haven't tasted, or don't know how to prepare, things such as bok choy, kale, winter squash varieties, okra, and other vegetables that are a staple in some kitchens.

Farm To Table Cookbook

Farm to Table Cookbook: Seasonal Recipes Made with Farm-Fresh Ingredients is 180+ pages of recipes geared specifically toward using ingredients directly from the farm or garden.

"Whether your farm is your backyard, garden, a farmer's market, a CSA box, the community garden or a local farm, this book will help you make the most out of your bounty. From hearty breakfasts, satisfying sandwiches and impressive entrees to homemade breads, sharable snacks and decadent desserts, you'll find everything you need to pile your table high with simple farmhouse goodness" - back cover of Farm to Table

Some of the recipes that immediately catch my eye are:

Kale Fittata with Bacon - with an abundance of eggs from my chickens I already have the majority of ingredients for this recipe here at home. If I learn that I don't care for kale, I imagine that spinach would be a good substitute.

Farmer's Market Grilled Chowder - includes corn, potato, zucchini, and onion in a cheesy/creamy broth. The photo makes my mouth water.

Butternut Bisque - I only very recently learned that I love the taste of roasted butternut so I am looking forward to finding more ways to prepare it. This looks creamy and delicous (and easy!)

Spinach Noodle Bowl with Ginger - vermicelli noodles, carrots, snow peas, spinach, and meet (shrimp or cooked chicken) with soy sauce and ginger is definitely a recipe I'm excited to try.

Butternut Squash Gnocchi with Savory Herb Butter - I've watched gnocchi being made on some of the cooking shows but haven't been brave enough to try. I LOVE the idea of butternut gnocchi.

These are just the first five recipes that I've bookmarked for myself. I hope to become more successful at both raising a variety of my own vegetables and then being able to cook tasty, healthy meals. I know that my health would improve with consuming fewer pre-made foods that contain preservatives and this book is helping in my next step toward eating farm fresh foods.

My Secret Valentine Hallmark Movie Review

My Secret Valentine Hallmark Movie
We can always rely on Hallmark for a wonderfully romantic Valentine's Day movie!

I recently stumbled across My Secret Valentine on a new streaming network (Frndly TV) I am trying out.  This Hallmark movie is available through several services, including Amazon.com, but I like being able to stream a movie for free on a network where I already have a subscription.

My Secret Valentine is a movie you could watch anytime.  The story just happens to take place during the month of February when the Grange Family Vineyard & Winery is hosting their annual, week-long, Valentine's Day Wine Festival.

This movie originally aired on Hallmark in 2018, but I just discovered it this "Loveuary" on FrndlyTV.

My Secret Valentine Hallmark Movie Synopsis

Seth Anderson (Andrew Walker) is an employee for Stratosphere boxed wine company, which wants to buy the Grange Winery.  Chloe Grange (Lacey Chabert) does not want to see her family's business sold, but she understands her father's need to retire.  Chloe has her own life in Portland, Oregon and her job is about to take a whole new turn toward a much-desired partnership.

My Secret ValentineCheck PriceThe Grange family also owns a lovely cabin that has not been used in years.  The manager of Grange Winery is overseeing the repairs to the cabin and has placed it with a rental agency.  It is immediately snatched up and rented.

When Chloe stops by the cabin to check the condition, she impulsively decides to leave a message on the cabin chalkboard.  She doesn't expect an answer, but a fun reply is exactly what she gets.  He signs the note as "Handyman" and she signs her next response as "In Need of Repairs", referring to the cabin's needs for more repairs.

Chloe has to do a lot of sole-searching during her visit home, trying to decide what she really wants now that she is faced with the sale of her family business.  She is adamantly opposed to selling to a "boxed wine" company and constantly finds herself at odds with the representative from Stratosphere.  Her only moments of levity are as a result of her unknown correspondent staying in the cabin, exchanging notes with her on the cabin chalkboard.

In the meantime, Seth is working hard to prove that he really does care about the Grange winery and that Stratosphere is the right company to buy them out.

If you are already familiar with the actors in this movie, the dvd cover has most likely given away a good bit of the story, but it is still a fun watch!

National Chopsticks Day Review

The Mid-Winter month of February is famous for the holidays of Groundhog's Day, Valentine's Day and President's Day. But lots of other unusual, different, strange or wacky days occur in February to give us lots to celebrate.

A bowl of Asian food with chopsticks

Chopsticks Day

National Chopsticks Day is celebrated each year on February 6. It is not a recognized 'national'  holiday, but somehow the national name was tacked onto the day. No one really knows why this holiday was begun as the creator is anonymous, but it can be a fun day to celebrate.

Approximately one-fourth of the world's population use chopsticks for every meal. In fact, Asian children quickly learn to use them and think forks are an 'odd' utensil.

My son's wife is from South Korea and the family uses chopsticks for most every meal. In fact, last night my darling daughter-in-law was even using chopsticks to feed leftover dinner tidbits to their poodle one bite at a time. A new-to-me use for chopsticks! LOL.

Image of chopsticks

Chopsticks come in many forms. They can be made of wood, bamboo, plastic, bone, fine china, or metal. Wooden or bamboo chopsticks are the choice in my son's family.

  • In China, chopsticks are called “Kuaizi”, which means “quick little bamboo fellows”.
  • In Korea, the word for chopsticks is “jeosgalag”.
  • In Japan, chopsticks are known as “Hashi”.

A Bit of Chopsticks History

chopsticks in a bowl

Definition: A pair of slender sticks held between thumb and fingers and used chiefly in Asian countries to lift food to the mouth.

According to research, chopsticks were developed in China about 5,000 years ago.  The earliest versions were probably twigs used to retrieve food from cooking pots.

In China, chopsticks symbolize heaven and earth. The round end is the eating end (heaven) and the square end symbolizes earth. This came about because the greatest concern between heaven and earth is maintaining an adequate food supply.

Cultural hint: Never use chopsticks the wrong way round, i.e., invert them, to avoid losing face.

How to Use Chopsticks

Summary

So, on February 6, be sure and use chopsticks ~ perhaps for a Chinese meal.
