The Protein Advantage Cookbook — A Delicious, Healthy New Cookbook

The Protein Advantage Cookbook is a collection of 100 high-protein, low-carb recipes and tips from bestselling author Carolyn Ketchum, the deservedly popular recipe developer and blogger behind All Day I Dream About Food. Ketchum’s newest cookbook blends quick weeknight meals with make-ahead basics and treats, wrapped in her pragmatic, low-carb approach, this time with a focus on high-protein recipes.

Its official launch date was yesterday, August 12, 2025, but I was lucky enough to get an advance review copy courtesy of the author and the publisher, Fair Winds Press (an imprint of Quarto). It’s a terrific cookbook for anyone interested in increasing their protein intake, and I’m delighted to share my review.

Who It's For

This low carb, high protein cookbook is for anyone looking to improve their health through “weight loss, blood sugar management, building lean muscle mass, or simply having more energy for daily life” while eating delicious, easy to prepare, wholesome food.

Ketchum’s stance of prioritizing protein aligns with the current science: increasing protein intake can improve satiety and support lean mass, especially alongside resistance training. And for adults 40+, adequate protein becomes increasingly important.

What's Inside

Ketchum opens with a concise science and strategy overview, including what “protein-forward, low-carb” means, why prioritizing protein matters from a health perspective, and how to stock a high-protein, low-carb pantry with healthy, tasty ingredients.

True to its name, of course, the majority of The Protein Advantage Cookbook is devoted to the recipes. I was delighted to see Ketchum's signature format: clear, easy to follow, step-by-step instructions, lots of full-color photos (although not every recipe has a photo), and practical tips, such as for swapping ingredients or scaling portions.

The 100 recipes are organized into chapters with straightforward labels:

  • Desserts
The Breakfast chapter includes 22 tasty recipes, such as Loaded Breakfast Casserole (29.5g of protein), Chocolate Protein Pancakes (19.7g of protein), Hot Maple Cereal (29.7g of protein), and Everything Bagel Smoked Salmon Toast (26.5g of protein).

    If you have a sweet tooth, never fear! Carolyn Ketchum is also the author of The Ultimate Guide to Keto Baking, and The Protein Advantage Cookbook includes 16 luscious desserts with a high-protein twist, such as Deep Dish Brownies (16g of protein), Lemon Cheesecake Bars (12.3g of protein), Coconut Candy Bars reminiscent of Mounds bars (10.4g of protein), and Strawberry Lemonade Ice Pops (10.1g of protein).

    There's also a chapter called "A Day in the Life" which chronicles what Ketchum ate over the course of a few typical days, along with the workouts she did on those days. As a very active, extremely fit woman, her calorie limits are much higher than mine, but it was still helpful to see how she incorporates the cookbook recipes into her daily meal plans.

    Why It Deserves a Place in Your Kitchen

    The Protein Advantage Cookbook delivers exactly what it promises: approachable, protein-centric low-carb recipes anchored in sensible nutrition guidance. For those of us who want to feel more satiated, lift heavier weights, or simply be stronger as we age, while eating delicious, nutritious food and without spending all day in the kitchen, this book will be an excellent, much-used addition to our cookbook collections.

    Clevr Blends Honey Pistachio Matcha SuperLatte: Delightful Hot or Cold

    I’ve never been a big fan of matcha. The distinctive grassy flavor reminds me a little too much of freshly mown lawn clippings. So, when I tried Clevr Blends’ Honey Pistachio Matcha SuperLatte after it was highly recommended by a friend, it was more out of curiosity than optimistic expectation. But this blend surprised me—in the best way.

    Smooth, subtly nutty, and lightly sweet, it’s easily the most enjoyable matcha I’ve tried. In fact, I liked it so much I’ve started keeping a pouch on hand for both cozy mornings and refreshing cold pick-me-ups.

    Here’s my honest review, including how I like to prepare it as both hot and iced matcha lattes.

    The Most Delicious Honey Pistachio Matcha Latte with Superfoods

    A Delicious, Indulgent-Tasting Treat

    The taste of this matcha latte is surprisingly delicious. The matcha is smooth and mellow, not grassy or bitter. The honey and pistachio notes shine through, adding warmth and a slightly nutty sweetness. The added honey and milk make it even more comforting and balanced. It feels like an indulgent treat. The added superfoods and antioxidants are a bonus!

    The iced version is light, smooth, and refreshing, with just the right amount of sweetness. The pistachio flavor seems to come forward more when iced, which I love, and the honey note lingers without being too sweet. It’s the kind of drink I could sip all summer long: satisfying but not heavy.

    The bright green color was a bit startling at first, but it's much prettier in person than on the screen!

    The Superfoods Bonus

    The Honey Pistachio Matcha SuperLatte from Clevr Blends isn’t your typical matcha drink. It’s a creamy, plant-based latte mix that blends:

    • Organic Japanese matcha (ceremonial grade, but without the overpowering grassy bite)
    • Oat and pistachio milk powders for creaminess
    • Real honey for natural sweetness
    • Ashwagandha, lion’s mane, and reishi for focus and calm
    • L-theanine to smooth out energy without jitters (this honey pistachio matcha latte with superfoods has 45 mg of caffeine, about half the amount you would find in a cup of coffee)

    It’s dairy-free, gluten-free, and refined sugar-free, with functional ingredients that support focus, mood, and a sense of balance. And while it's definitely not keto, it's fairly low carb.

    But you don't have to drink it for the superfoods benefits. You can just drink it because it's flat-out delicious!

    Making Hot Honey Pistachio Matcha SuperLatte

    I add 3 tablespoons of the powder to 6–8 ounces of hot water (not boiling). Then I stir in a small squirt of honey (I use monk fruit-sweetened sugar-free honey), add a splash of unsweetened macadamia or almond milk, and froth it all together until smooth and frothy.

    Making Iced Honey Pistachio Matcha SuperLatte

    I use an electric frother to dissolve 3 tablespoons of the powder in 4 ounces of warm water with a squirt of honey (or monk fruit honey) and a splash of unsweetened macadamia or almond milk until the mixture is very frothy. Then I pour it over a tall (16-ounce) glass filled with ice cubes.

    By the way, the best frother I have ever tried is the one in these photos, the Nahida Coffee Milk Frother Wand, which is powerful, has three speeds, dedicated buttons for each speed, and holds a charge longer than any other frother my husband and I have tried.

    Why I Keep Reaching for It

    As someone who’s never cared for matcha, Clevr Blends Honey Pistachio Matcha SuperLatte really changed my mind. It gives me a gentle, steady lift without the crash I sometimes get from coffee. And I love that it includes adaptogens like ashwagandha and lion’s mane for added stress support and focus.     If you’ve avoided matcha because of its grassy flavor, this SuperLatte might just change your mind. The Honey Pistachio Matcha from Clevr Blends is smooth, lightly sweet, and surprisingly crave-worthy. With its clean ingredients and nourishing benefits, it’s become a go-to in my kitchen.

    Not a matcha lover? Neither was I. But this superfoods-infused Clevr Blends matcha latte made me a believer.

    What I Love About These Protein Brownies

    Excellent Texture and Flavor

    I was honestly surprised by how moist and rich these brownies are. (They're even better after a quick 10-second warm-up in the microwave.) The texture is soft and slightly dense, much like a traditional fudge brownie. My husband and I have enjoyed all the flavors we have tried so far: Glazed Chocolate Donut, Chocolate Cookie Monster, Banana Nut, Cookie Dough, and Red Velvet brownies. (The Banana Nut isn't quite as indulgent as the other flavors we've tried.)

    These taste like indulgent bakery treats, minus the sugar crash. They’re especially good when you’re craving something comforting but want to stay on track.

    Packed With Protein and Collagen 

    Getting enough protein, especially as we age and lose muscle, can be a challenge. The combination of whey protein and collagen makes these brownies more than just a snack; they’re also nutritionally beneficial. I love knowing that I’m supporting my skin, joints, and lean muscle while indulging in something that tastes like dessert.

    For those of us over 50, this collagen boost is especially welcome, since natural collagen production declines with age and affects everything from skin firmness, hair health and nail health to bone health.

    Portability and Convenience

    Each brownie is individually wrapped, which makes it easy to throw one into a handbag, gym bag, or even your car’s center console for a mid-day boost. They don’t melt or crumble, and they are much more delicious and feel more satisfying than typical protein bars.

    Some flavors lean sweeter than others, and a few have a noticeable sugar-alcohol aftertaste. If you're sensitive to erythritol or similar sweeteners, you might want to sample one or two before buying a full box.

    The Best Tasting, Healthy, High Protein Hot Chocolate

    I love hot chocolate, especially during the cold winter months. Unfortunately, most hot chocolate and hot cocoa mixes on the market either don't taste great or are high in sugar and other ingredients I'd prefer to avoid. I have shared my delicious The Ultimate Keto Hot Chocolate Recipe here on Review This Reviews, but it takes a bit of time to prepare and sometimes I just want something quick and easy.

    As we age, it's also increasingly important to prioritize protein in our diets. Grass-fed bone broth is a wonderful way to get more high-quality protein, but let's face it, it doesn't hit the spot when what we're really craving is some yummy hot chocolate!

    When I first heard of chocolate bone broth, the idea was a real turn-off. When I finally tried it, it tasted a lot better than I expected....but definitely not good enough to substitute for hot chocolate.

    Instructions:

    1. Heat the milk in a small saucepan or microwave until it’s hot but not boiling.
    2. In a mug, add 1 scoop of Paleovalley Chocolate Bone Broth Protein and 1 scoop of Perfect Keto Chocolate Collagen or Perfect Keto Mint Chocolate Collagen.
    3. Stir in the hot milk and optional sweeteners and flavorings. Note: If using the ChocZero flavoring syrup, do not also use liquid allulose and extract.

    I recently discovered Jocko Mölk Protein Powder after it was recommended by several nutritionists I follow. Ever since I started my low carb lifestyle back in 2019, I have tried to prioritize protein. But it can be harder than you think to get as much protein as we need!

    I have used low carb protein shakes and protein bars to increase my protein intake without adding a lot of calories and fat to my diet. Unfortunately, many of them just don't taste that good, and many of the protein powders also have an unpleasant texture and tendency to sink to the bottom of whatever beverage you're making with them.

    Fortunately, the one I'm reviewing today, Jocko Mölk Protein Powder, ticks all the boxes for my husband and me. It tastes great when blended into a shake with milk, ice, and optional flavorings, packs an impressive 22g of protein, yet it has only 120–140 calories, 2g–3.5g of fat, 3–7g of carbohydrate, and only 1–2g of sugar. It's soy-free and gluten-free and contains probiotics and digestive enzymes to prevent bloating.

(Some flavors may be seasonal.) So far, we have only tried the Mint Chocolate and we love it. We plan to try more flavors!

    The flavors are rich and not overly sweet, as they are sweetened naturally with monk fruit. Many users appreciate the lack of artificial aftertaste that some protein powders have. This also makes it easy to customize your desired level of sweetness. (We love adding ChocZero flavoring syrups sweetened with monk fruit.)

    Unlike many other protein powders, this one mixes smoothly with water, milk, or alternative milk without leaving clumps or being gritty. Using a blender yields the best results, but a shaker cup works well, too.

    Performance and Benefits

    In addition to providing a basic protein boost, which is why my husband and I use this, the slow-digesting protein blend supports muscle recovery over an extended period, making it ideal for nighttime use or between meals. We find that a shake made with Jocko Mölk, nut milk, ice, and optional flavorings is filling and satisfying while being low in calories, carbs, and fat.

    Value for Money

    At roughly $40–$45 for 31 servings, Jocko Mölk isn't inexpensive, but its price reflects its premium quality and clean formulation. Surprisingly, it's actually significantly less expensive than several other high quality, clean protein powders we have tried, such as Truvani whey protein, which costs roughly the same a 20-serving bag. And at roughly $1.30-$1.45 per serving, Jocko Mölk is a less expensive source of high-quality protein than many other foods.

    It's also a wonderful, delicious, quick and convenient way for anyone to get more protein into their diets, including seniors and invalids who may not have an appetite for more conventional protein sources.

    The Best Low Carb, High Protein, Gluten-Free Pasta

    Kaizen Low Carb Pasta made with lupin flour is a health-conscious alternative to traditional pasta made with wheat flour and semolina. It is the best pasta I have found for those of us who follow a low-carb diet, such as keto enthusiasts, diabetics, or anyone looking to reduce their carbohydrate intake. It is also a great option for people who follow a gluten-free diet.

    This product review will cover Kaizen pasta’s taste, texture, nutritional value, preparation, and overall value. As a bonus, I will also share a simple recipe I developed that uses Kaizen fusilli.

    One of the most critical aspects of any pasta product is its taste and texture. Kaizen low carb pasta aims to mimic the familiar experience of traditional pasta, and it does a commendable job.

    Taste

    The pasta has a mild, slightly nutty flavor that pairs well with a variety of sauces. It reminds me of chickpea pasta. 

    While it doesn't have the same taste as pasta made from wheat flour and semolina, it is quite enjoyable when combined with robust sauces like marinara or Alfredo. 

    Texture

    The texture is pleasantly firm, though slightly different from traditional pasta. It is a bit chewier, which can take some getting used to, but it holds up well in both hot and cold dishes. 

    Nutritional Value

    Kaizen low carb pasta shines in its nutritional profile, making it an attractive option for health-conscious consumers.

    Low in Carbohydrates

    This pasta is significantly lower in carbs compared to regular pasta, making it suitable for low-carb and keto diets. Each serving contains only 6 grams of net carbs, depending on the specific variety. 

    The company has also come out with an even lower-carb pasta line, which I have ordered and will review after I have tried it.

    High in Protein

    With 20 grams of protein per serving, this pasta helps in meeting daily protein requirements, which is beneficial for muscle maintenance and overall health.

    The pasta has 15 grams of dietary fiber per serving, contributing to better digestive health and helping to keep you full for longer.

    Kaizen prides itself on using natural ingredients, which is a big plus for those avoiding artificial additives and preservatives. 

    Preparation

    Preparing Kaizen Low Carb Pasta is straightforward and similar to traditional pasta. Just bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, cook the pasta for about 5–6 minutes (to the desired texture), drain, and use as desired, with a sauce or in recipes. 

    Although the texture is different than traditional pasta made from wheat and semolina flours and cannot be cooked al dente, it's crucial to monitor the pasta closely to avoid overcooking so it does not become mushy.

    Versatility

    Kaizen Low Carb Pasta is versatile and, at the time of this post's publication, is available in four shapes: Fusilli, ziti, radiatore, and cavatappi. This makes it suitable for a variety of dishes.

    It works well in classic hot pasta dishes like spaghetti Bolognese, carbonara, lasagna, and baked casseroles.

    I used it to make a low-carb, high-protein, high-fiber version of a traditional Jewish sweet noodle kugel (a sweet egg, cottage cheese, and noodle casserole) and it was absolutely delicious!

    It also holds up well in cold pasta salads, providing a hearty base for a variety of fresh ingredients. 

    Overall Value

    Considering its health benefits, Kaizen low carb pasta offers good value for money. Although it is more expensive than conventional pasta made with wheat flour and semolina, the added nutritional benefits will justify the higher price point for many consumers.

    It's particularly valuable for those who need to manage their carbohydrate intake, follow a gluten-free diet, or want a higher protein alternative to standard pasta.

    Kaizen low carb pasta is an excellent product for anyone seeking a healthier alternative to traditional pasta without compromising on taste and texture.     Low Carb Fusilli With Pork and Mushroom Ragu

    I whip up this delicious, low carb pasta dish often because it's quick and easy to make and my husband and I both enjoy it.

    I usually serve it with a side salad and, sometimes, with garlic bread made with Hero bread (expensive but 0 net carbs and exceptional taste and texture for a keto-friendly bread).

    Ingredients

    Boiling water

    Salt

    1 pound ground pork

    8 oz. portabello mushrooms

    1/4 cup wine (red is traditional but white is good, too)

    Chopped fresh or dried Italian herbs (optional)

    15.5 oz. jar Rao's Homemade Marinara sauce

    8 oz. box Kaizen Fusilli low carb pasta

    Freshly grated Parmigiano-Romano cheese

    Directions

    1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil while you make the pork and mushroom ragu (meat sauce).
    2. In a large nonstick skillet, crumble and lightly brown the ground pork over medium-high heat.
    3. Slice the mushrooms and add them to the browned pork. Stir occasionally until the mushrooms are soft.
    4. Stir in the wine and the optional seasonings and cook until the wine is reduced by about half.
    5. Stir in the marinara sauce and turn the heat to a low simmer.
    6. Stir the fusilli into the boiling salted water (some foaming is normal) and boil for 5 minutes.
    7. Drain and stir the cooked pasta into the pork and mushroom ragu. Turn the heat down to low and let the pasta "marry" with the sauce for 3 to 5 minutes.
    8. Divide into four portions and grate some Parmigiano-Romano cheese over the top just before serving.
