Skeletons for Halloween - Reviewed

Celebrate Halloween with Skeletons
Skeleton Photo by mbgphoto

I remember when the most common Halloween decorations were Jack-o-Lanterns.  If you can go by my neighborhood that is no longer the case.  As I drive around my area the most common decoration, by far, is skeletons.  There are skeletons on mailboxes, on shutters, sitting on benches, hanging from trees and standing out in the middle of the yards.  In the photo above you see a skeleton that is larger than the house with a skeleton dog sitting next to it.

I did a little searching on Google about what are the most popular decorations right now and they listed skeletons, pumpkins, spiders, witches and bats.  Google search data claimed that skeletons are the most popular overall. So it looks like my neighborhood is right in the swing of things!!

In this post I will give you a bit of information on the history of the Halloween decoration and share with you the photos I took of many of the skeletons in my neighborhood.

I love these two skeletons relaxing on chairs in a front yard.

History of Skeletons for Halloween

Did you ever wonder why there are skeletons on Halloween?  The festival that we now call Halloween started out as a Celtic harvest festival called Samhain.  It was celebrated on October 31st at the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the long, cold, dark days of winter.  The festival symbolized one of death and was celebrated with bon fires--called "bone fires" and symbols of the dead such as ghosts and skeletons.  This is also where our graveyards and haunted houses came to celebrate the Halloween holiday.

Climbing Skeletons

There is a house a street over from us that as a multitude of skeletons including the ones climbing on their shutters, as seen above, and one on their mailbox as seen in the photo below.

  1. This review of the skeletons currently decorating your neighborhood is delightful, Mary Beth. What a fun story. Have to tell you about my daughter-in-law who LOVES Halloween decorations and fully decorates inside and outside every year. Each year she adds to her collection. A few Octobers ago, I went shopping with her for her latest craze - a 6 foot skeleton for her yard (which her husband [my son] built a wooden crypt for which they put in the front yard). We purchased the skeleton and took it out to her SUV whereas we wondered how to transport it. What we did was put it upright in a sitting position in the backseat and held it in place with the seat belt. I have to tell you the LOOKS we got from other drivers on the way home was priceless!

Thanks for sharing your neighborhood skeletons with me, and also thanks for the mention about my Halloween article on handmade Halloween home decor. Appreciate it.

  4. I was just noticing this week how skeletons had taken over our neighborhood! My favorite is a skeleton dog chasing a skeleton cat up a tree. We have our bat and pumpkins so I guess we are not "in style" for this year, but no worries. My neighbors are certainly decorating in skeleton style just like your neighborhood. Thank you for featuring my Halloween decor post. We do enjoy decorating for the holidays and driving around to look at other decorations.

  5. I always get a kick out of those skeletons crawling on the houses for Halloween; they're a cross between hilarious and super creepy - but honestly, they do make me laugh more than any other Halloween decoration - what does that say about me? lol

  6. Mary Beth, I think you are right, skeletons have taken over my neighborhood too! Spiders seem to be the next most common. I love that it's so easy to get into the spirit of the holiday with a few well placed skeletons!

  9. Those huge skeletons are hugely (pun intended) popular around Ottawa. We even have a radio celebrity going around and taking and sharing skelfies with them!
