Turning an Old Standard Cookie Recipe into Christmas Cookies

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies are my husband's favorite cookies so, of course, our Oatmeal Raisin Cookie recipe must be included in the holiday baking.

I use my mother's recipe for Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, but I have pulled out my treasure trove of cookie cutters to make the traditional, nondescript cookie into a pretty Christmas cookie.

I did not change the recipe, I just changed the presentation, making the traditionally plain, exceptionally beautiful. 

No only do children like the cute shapes, but adults do too.  They are perfect for Christmas parties and gatherings. 

 

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies Recipe

Ingredients

• 1 1/4 cup Softened Butter
• 3/4 cup Brown Sugar
• 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar
• 1 Egg
• 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
• 1 1/2 cup All Purpose Flour
• 1 tsp Baking Soda
• 1 tsp Cinnamon
• 1/4 tsp Nutmeg
• 3 cups Quaker 1-minute Oats - Uncooked
• 1 cup Raisins

Instructions 

1. Pre-heat the Oven to 375° 
2. Beat together Butter, Brown Sugar, Sugar and Egg until well blended 
3. Stir in Vanilla 
4. Add All Purpose Flour, Baking Soda, Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Quaker Oats. 
5. Stir together until well mixed. 
6. Stir in Raisins By hand
7. Pat out part of the mixture onto a plate or onto wax paper 
8. Using the cookie cutters, cut out cookies and lay on an ungreased cookie sheet 
9. Bake for 8 or 9 minutes

Note: Do not overcook. Cookies will be soft when you first remove them from the oven and will harden as they cool.

Christmas Holiday Bibs for Baby

If you are looking for holiday bibs for baby, here are some cute ones to consider for the Christmas holiday. It's a fun way to add to the holiday spirit.

The bibs are printed by and sold by Zazzle. I am the artist for the selection of bibs shown below.

The bibs from Zazzle are soft to the touch; they are made from polyester fleece. They are closed with a velcro fastener, making it easy not having to deal with tying or untying it.

The bibs are also machine washable on the gentle cycle and are to be dried on tumble low. If there is a placeholder for a name, it is easy to customize on the template forms, and can also be deleted if you don't want any text. Any personalizing needs to be done for each side.

They are said to fit most newborns to 36 months. Having seen a photo of a newborn next to a bib, the bib looked too large for the young newborn. If you are purchasing for a newborn, these bibs will probably be more for growing into.

The design area measures 12.8inches x 14.8 inches. Per Zazzle, the design is printed with baby safe ink.

The design is printed on both sides. If you do any adjustments to the image, keep the main part of the image within the dashed lines or else that part of the image may print on the seem lines.

This first bib features a fun painting of Santa Claus done in pointillism. He has rosy cheeks and green eyes.

 What is the best cookware to protect your glass-top stove? A glass-top stove can easily be scratched. I love cooking with my cast-iron skillets, and one thing I hear all the time is that you can't use cast-iron on a glass-top stove. 

Best Cookware for Glass Top Stoves - Reviewed

• Well, I use my cast-iron skillets all the time, and here are a few simple rules I follow to protect my glass-top from damage.
• Cast-iron is heavy and has a rough bottom, so I never slide it across the surface. Always lift it to reposition it, never drag it.
• Make sure your skillet has a flat, smooth bottom. Some older pans may have raised logos or ridges that can leave marks.
• Cast-iron holds heat extremely well; be careful of hotspots. Start on a lower temperature and work up to a higher temperature. I never leave my skillet on the high setting very long.

Used with care, cast-iron is perfectly safe and effective on glass-top stoves.

Best types of cookware for Glass-Top Stoves:

I did some research, and here is what I found:

• Cookware with flat, perfectly even, smooth bottoms. This ensures full contact with the glass, allowing heat to transfer evenly.
• Moderate weight if you're using heavier cookware, use the cautions for cast-iron.
• Good heat conduction, Metals that distribute heat well, such as stainless steel with an aluminum or copper core, or hard-anodized aluminum.

Fran found this David Burke skillet with a smooth stainless steel bottom, and it works very well on our glass top stove. I still use my cast-iron skillets with the cautions I've listed above.

Reviewing CraftHub Premium Wooden Puzzles

Whenever I think about wooden jigsaw puzzles, I think of young children's puzzles with pieces thick enough for little hands and large enough to not be a choking hazard. But that was before I received a bunch of CraftHub Premium Wooden puzzles from friends. I have recently found that wooden puzzles for adults are pretty amazing; similar to jigsaw puzzles with pieces and pictures to assemble and similar to mental puzzles that require more brain power to solve.

I had not heard of these type of wooden puzzles for adults until my friends gave me an assortment of them after they were de-cluttering. The tiny puzzle boxes continued my preconception that wooden puzzles were for children. Thank goodness that I'm nosey enough to give one of the puzzles a try before passing them on to charity donations. 

The Tree of Life puzzle was the first one I tried and I was enchanted.  I love jigsaw puzzles. I work on jigsaw puzzles multiple times a week, almost daily in fact. The unique shapes increased the level of difficulty. The hook shaped "arms" connected the pieces firmly while other pieces only abutted next to each other.

The CraftHub premium wooden puzzles are described as:

My Experience with My First CraftHub Puzzle

I enjoyed these little puzzles immensely. As I said above, I only opened the box because I was nosey. I was in the middle of chores and other activities and had originally planned on just looking at the pieces. The colors were so vibrant and the pieces so unique that I could not stop returning to that puzzle over the weekend to work on it. Then I couldn't wait to start on the Owl puzzle. 

Some of these puzzles were unopened and some had been used. The used puzzles showed absolutely no wear or damage. With some jigsaw puzzles, the pieces can become bent. Or the picture layer can begin to peel from the lower, solid layer. These wooden pieces showed none of that.

Some folks may consider these puzzles as too difficult. Or stressful. But I enjoyed the challenge and felt accomplished after I finished. I am looking forward to completing the remainder of the puzzles passed down to me, then adding new designs to my collection.

I think these puzzles would make great gifts for jigsaw puzzle aficionados. The themed puzzles would make great gifts for folks who do not usually gravitate toward puzzles but would love having the item of certain themes. For example, the castle of Hogwarts puzzle would be an awesome gift for someone who collects all things Harry Potter.
