Reviewing Solar Garden Lantern

 For Christmas this year, I received a beautiful solar garden light from a special friend.  This lamp is decorated with hummingbirds and flowers and at night will light up your garden with a lovely pattern.

About my Special Friend

I'd like to share with you a little about my special friend.  Her name is Anna and over 60 years ago, when I was in girl scouts, I was working toward my pen pal badge. I was matched up with several pen pals from various countries and most I wrote to for a few months or maybe even a year and then the letters stopped.  One of my pen pals was Anna who lived in the London area in England.  I live in the midwestern United States.  Anna and I seemed to really connect with each other, and we now have been pen pals for 63 years.  Our lives took similar routes, we each married and had two children and we both have granddaughters.

We wrote letters to each other in snail mail for years and when we were each in our 40's we finally met each other in person.  Anna and her family traveled to the US to visit us. Since then, we have visited several times and now with technology we message each other regularly.  Our husbands have also become friends and will sometimes email each other.  We have vacationed together in Cyprus and Memphis Tennessee.  My husband and I have also visited Anna and Peter at their home in England near the border of Wales.  We attended their son's wedding and have met up with them when we were on cruises, and they would travel to one of our stops (Plymouth in England and Bruges in Belgium.)  We have developed a wonderful friendship over the years.  

Now that we are older my husband and I no longer are able to travel but we enjoy the wonderful memories.  We still message each other regularly sharing news of our children and granddaughters.

We also exchange Christmas gifts each year as we have for the last 60+ years.  This year we received the beautiful Solar Garden Lantern from Anna and Peter.

The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella ~ A Book Review

 Well I don't know about all of you but my friends and I are always on the lookout for something a little lighter and fun after all the stresses of the Holidays are over.  To that end we search out something to do or read that will bring a little levity to our days.  And that's when The Undomestic Goddess, by Sophie Kinsella landed on my desk!

All of my gal pals have had enough of cooking, cleaning, preparing meals and speical family dinners to last then till Easter at least and I'm sure some of you are feeling that way too!  Well, I have a solution for you and it's between the pages of this book.  The Undomestic Goddess makes you stop and think, "What could this possibly be about?"

Well, if you are in need of some light hearted reading that will have you laughing out loud, this just might be the book you are looking for.  Written in 2008 it's not new by any means of the imagination, but the story is so good that you just might want to pick it up more than once, or pick up some of Sophie Kinsella's other books.

So here's the synopsis and you decide if it's something you would enjoy:

Samantha Sweeting is a brilliant mind, smart as a whip and all she's ever wanted is to become a lawyer!  Well after passing the bar and getting her first job at the most prestigious law firm in town, she is well on her way to realizing her dreams.  

After 7 years of putting in all the hours, weekend meetings, last minute preparations for a big legal fight, Samantha does one thing wrong and it will be her undoing!  She's made a mistake that any first year intern would never make and it's going to cost her the job of her dreams and the firm 50 million pounds!

Needless to say, her dreams of becoming a partner in this firm is  never going to happen!  How could she have been so stupid.  A super smart, brilliant legal mind does not forget to file papers to protect the company she works for from being sued or liable for that kind of money.  But, that's what has happened.

Samantha in her panic leaves the offices amid gasping partners that have just found out what she has done.  She is having a major melt down and can't focus at all on the next steps to take. 

Finding herself on a train going somewhere, she literally stumbles onto the grounds of a very nice home!  She's hoping to get some clarity and the owners of the home are awaiting the arrival of a "Domestic" to help run their home.

Well, let's just say that Samantha in her crazed mental state accepts the position as the new housekeeper.  After all where else is she going to go? 

I don't want to give to much more of the book away, let's just agree that what happens after this chance encounter and new job posting, Samantha gets a whole new education and the hilarity ensues.

This book is classified as Chick-Lit, and so it is!  I would recommend it to anyone who needs a break from their normal genre of reading materials.  Sit back and enjoy page after page of the antics that happen when a lawyer turns up to clean the Loo's, do the laundry,  ironing and cook the dinners!

You will find yourself shaking your head and laughing out loud!  January is a great time of the year to start with a good belly laugh!  And you can start it right here!

Sophie Kinsella is witty, funny, and just very easy to read and if you enjoy this book there are other's that she has written as well.

Reviewing The Many And Varied Uses Of Magnifiers

I have recently discovered that using a magnifier can be a game changer! Whether you pursue an intricate hobby, are partially or severely sight impaired, have issues seeing tiny labels, or love seeing the world of nature in close up detail, a magnifier is so very useful.

I was introduced to the world of magnifiers due to my husband being diagnosed severe sight impaired. He requires additional support to read print and had an assessment to ascertain which magnifier would suit him.

Magnifiers are incredibly versatile tools with a wide range of uses, regardless of whether you have vision issues or not. As part of his sight assessment my husband was issued with two magnifiers and he finds them very useful, however an unexpected benefit is that I am also finding them extremely helpful! I don't have any particular sight issues but I do find these days and as I get a bit older there are so many things that seem to be in tiny print!! 

My husband who is severe sight impaired uses them for accessibility and a low vision aid and I use them whenever I cannot see the print very well and for other interests. 

Examples of ways we use magnifiers.

• Reading the very small print on washing instructions. I find it particularly annoying that the print is always so small and even worse when it is grey on black. A magnifier helps me to get the washing right and avoid costly mistakes! 
• Reading mixing or cooking information on jars and packets of food.
• Checking ingredient list and cooking instructions on tins, packets and jars.
• Checking the ingredient list on beauty and health products - as I am allergic to specific ingredients this is very important to me to so that I do not get a reaction or waste time having to send things back.
• Reading the Fine Print in important written paper documents.
• When I took an evening class in Astronomy we needed a magnifier to spot the finer details. We used magnifiers to  examine star charts.
• Helps me to in identify tiny pests and diseases particularly on my indoor plants and to investigate the intricate details of plants and flower structures we would not normally see.
• On our nature walks it can be interesting to examine tiny flowers and fungus under the magnifier to find details not easily visible.
• Ideal for checking splinters and other small wounds
• Reading, especially books or magazines with small print 
• Checking telephone numbers
• Looking at debit card details when providers ask for the numbers
• Reading policy numbers on insurances etc when providers ask for them. 
• Reading Instructions on new purchases.
• Reading restaurant menus, especially in low light.

Useful Features To Consider In A Magnifier

We personally find the two most useful features a light with the magnifier and the portability.

We now have two magnifiers, one is hand held with a round glass vision area and a handle and the other one is a credit card shaped  magnifier. Both are very useful in all kinds of situations. 

 

Light

We both appreciate a magnifier that has an optional light. This is really helpful when trying to read in low light such as a restaurant menu or a poorly lit room. It is also easier to see tiny print with the light on. I would certainly recommend always getting one with a good light system. 

Magnification Power

This is a personal preference so it is good to check the magnification power for your needs to give you clarity and reduce any eyestrain. This may depend on your eyesight and the reason you need the magnifier.

Quality 

It is important that the Magnifier is strong enough so that it can stand up to being carried around and used on the move and that it is comfortable to hold. It needs to be light enough to easily carry, yet sturdy enough to carry in a pocket or handbag. We have found that sometimes you might need to consider the trade between a comfort hold and an item that it a bit bulkier or to get two, one to use at home and a lighter  smaller one to use out of the home.

Clarity

It is vital that the resulting sight is clear and comfortable for your eyes. There is a slight learning curve as you find the ideal distance from the letters or numbers you are trying to read to get the optimum clarity. 

Versatility

Ideally the magnifier will be suitable for several tasks, though you may find for some needs and specific tasks you might need two. We only use portable Magnifiers so far, but people may also find a magnifier with a stand is useful especially for crafting and if you find it difficult to hold a magnifier for periods of time.

Book Review: In Search of the Old Ones (A Brief History of the Anasazi)

In Search of the Old Ones (A Brief History of the Anasazi) written by David Roberts is part personal outdoor travel memoir, part history lesson, and part examination of the controversies surrounding archeology methods over the decades. The author's descriptions of the areas he hiked made me feel as though I were along on the adventure in the beautiful, warm Southwest rather than snuggled up inside on the sofa during a Mid-Atlantic snow storm in January. I have always wanted to return to the Southwest but with the new appreciation and understanding I've gained from the book, I am seriously considering how to make the trip happen.

The Book and the Author

David Roberts is a climber, mountaineer, author, and was a professor of literature in the 1970s. While reading In Search of the Old Ones (A Brief History of the Anasazi) I would have thought his degree was in archeology rather than mathematics and english. It must be his love for adventure and the outdoors that shines from the pages of this story. 

The Anasazi, Roberts explains why he chooses to use the name Anasazi as opposed to some that others use, were an ancient people who somehow disappeared from the US Southwest in the 1200s. They left behind stone homes, bits of pottery (at times a whole piece can be found, but that is increasingly rare), pictographs, spear/arrow heads and piles of shavings left from the process of chipping those from stone. 

Roberts hiked (both alone and with others) the areas where the Anasazi ruins can be found. These areas included Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, Grand Gulch, Whiskers Draw, Moqui Canyon, and more. Many of the places are off the beaten path and can be difficult to find. People like me will never see these sites. Other sites are tourist attractions and open to the public. And as a result, are impacted by wear, tear, graffiti, theft, trash, and other issues that are not conducive to preserving ancient history. Other sites have been completely erased due to modernization.

Roberts describes those who have had a passion for finding these dwellings. Richard Wetherill, Quakers and Rancher, was not the first Anglo to find cliff dwellings but it became his lifelong hunt (until he was forced to stop).  A Ute Chief, Acowitz, told Richard Wetherill of the sacred place, a house in the cliffs bigger than all of the others. But the Utes never go there. Acowitz warned of disturbing the spirits of the dead. The Wetherills found this place, and many other sights.

Through this book, we read descriptions of those who believe that all of these items (pottery, bodies found at burial sites, and etc) should be kept in museums. We read other's descriptions of how many of these artifacts are lost, or stored out of sight in these museums. These conflicting ideas of how these ancient items should be preserved and displayed was very throught-provoking. Was Richard Wetherill a thief? Or was his beginning exploration and attempts at preservation a good thing? Perhaps we will never be able to decide.

Just as the various opinions about the disappearance of the Anasazi are at odds, did they leave due to drought and food source issues, were they killed by others, or did they kill themselves, I suppose we may never be able to decide. 

Personal Thoughts

In retrospect, what I thought I knew about the Anasazi and their dwellings was it size of a bit of dust. I had been aware that there had been a group of people known as the Anasazi. I learned this on one of my drives out west. This group of people left behind stone buildings built into cliffs. During one of my drives out west, I stopped at the Aztec Ruins and then at Mesa Verde. I marveled at how a group of ancient people built these stone dwellings around a thousand years ago. The stone dwelling high in the side of a cliff at Mesa Verde was unimaginable and yet there it was. I walked through it.  But I hadn't wondered much beyond that about how these people lived.

I have always wanted to return and to take a more leisurely look around. Now that I have read this book by David Roberts, I have more understanding the difficult of learning why the Anasazi were suddenly no more. I understand why there are debates about how to store and display these artifacts and I especially understand how special it was to see the two sites I did see -- while they still remain and are open to the public.

I highly recommend this book for hikers and adventurers as well as folks who are strictly interested in the historical aspects of the Anasazi.

My Honest Thoughts on These Lined Leggings - A Review

For Christmas 2024, I wanted something useful for a friend who enjoys comfortable clothes.

Reviewing Two Similar Rummy-Style Card Games

Several years ago I learned a new card game called Three-Thirteen (3/13). It is played with a regular deck of cards. The rules are simple and the game is very enjoyable played with two or more players. 

The other rummy type card game I just began playing is called Five Crowns.

Three-Thirteen Basic Rules

As each round is played, each player tries to combine all the cards in their hand into one or more sets (as either 3 or more of a kind, or as a run, or a combination of both). When a player’s hand is complete, they lay down their hand and all other players get one more turn to try and improve their own hand to reduce their score.

Play begins with a three-card hand and the number of cards increases by one for each subsequent hand from 3 to 13 (kings). Designated wild cards can be used for any card when saving runs and sets. The wild cards change with each round with the jokers always being wild and each round having as its wild card the card that equals the number of cards dealt for that round (i.e., with 3 cards, 3s are wild, with 4 cards, 4s are wild, etc.)

At the end of the final round (Kings), the winner is the player with the fewest number of points. There are several variations of Three-Thirteen, as seen here in the Wikipedia article. 

Since learning to play 3/13, I have taught it to everyone in my family. So anytime I get together with siblings, children, or grandchildren, this has been our card game of choice.

Recently, I joined a card group at my apartment complex. They get together once a month to play cards and then share a meal. My first time I planned to play whatever the group had decided on, but also hoped to eventually teach them my favorite card game ~ Three-Thirteen. When I arrived for my first visit to the group, I discovered their preferred game was Five Crowns. Turns out that the rules are basically the same as my beloved game of 3/13. What fun! I learned a new game with new friends and still get to play my favorite rummy card game!

Five Crowns Basic Rules

PlayMonster Five Crowns — The Game Isn't Over Until the Kings Go Wild! — 5 Suited Rummy-Style Card Game — For Ages 8+

Five Crowns differs from playing with simply a regular deck of cards (or two decks if you have more than 3 people) in that there are five suits (your regular hearts, spades, clubs & diamonds, plus a STAR suit. 

The game consists of two 58-card decks (116 cards in all) containing the five suits, each consisting of eleven cards from the 3s to the kings. There are also six Jokers in this game, used as wild cards in each round. 

As with the game of Three-Thirteen, Five Crowns is won by the person with the lowest score at the end of play.

Summary

Whether you play Three-Thirteen or Five Crowns, these rummy-style games are quick, easy and a great deal of fun to play. If you enjoy playing cards, you will find these two games extremely pleasurable.

MyPillow Flannel Sheets Reviewed

For our anniversary, my husband & I purchased new MyPillow flannel sheets.  I knew I would like the plaid colors and I expected quality sheets.  We have several other sets of MyPillow sheets as well as the MyPillow pillows and mattress topper.  All of which I have previously reviewed and recommended.  However, I did not expect to love these sheets as much as I do.  

When we first received them, I washed them in hot water before I put them on our bed.  Like all flannel sheets, they are soft and comfortable.  Plus, they are very warm.  The deep pockets allow them to easily fit over the combination of mattress and mattress topper that we have on our bed.

Because we both prefer these MyPillow flannel sheets to any other sheets, we gave a set to my parents for Christmas.  They have both told us several times how much they love the sheets too.  Since the sheet set is literally heavier than most bed sheets, I was very concerned that these flannel sheets would be to heavy for my "little" mother, but she tells me almost daily how much she really appreciates the warmth they provide.  However, she does have my dad carry the set back to the bed each time they are washed.  That certainly seems like the optimum solution for them.

Preferred Water Bowl for Cats, Review

Our preferred water bowl for our cat is a human grade dessert bowl made for humans.

We had tried water fountains before with other cats that we had, to encourage them to drink more water. Actually, we didn't see a big difference and there was the additional upkeep of the fountain and filters, etc. So we switched to metal pet bowls. They seemed to last a long time.

When our cat Tori came into our lives, I bought her a new metal bowl of the same brand that we had purchased before. It didn't seem to last long at all. As before, I rinsed it each day and put in fresh water. After a month or so there was a roughness that I noticed when I rinsed the bowl out. I thought perhaps it was a fluke, and bought another one. Same thing happened. I purchased a different style metal bowl that was a different brand. Again, the same thing happened.

These were decent bowls, I had thought. They had a good weight to them and were coated on the bottom to prevent sliding. And I didn't have that issue before.

I decided to move up to human grade bowls and kept my eye out for one that would be a good size for our cat. I found an 11-ounce dessert bowl by Corelle. It was a great height for our cat and held a decent amount of water. This bowl is thicker than the cereal bowls in this style.

It worked! I do the same routine, and the insides of the bowl have remained smooth for months and months. And our cat even drinks more water now than she did before. The bowl doesn't have the rubber grip stuff under it, but I can live with that. A cloth mat under the bowl suffices. It is now our favorite bowl for our cat's water.
