The Ainsley McGregor Mysteries: A Case for the Winemaker Reviewed

A Case for the Winemaker movie review
I recently watched and reviewed Ainsley McGregor Mysteries: A Case for the Yarn Maker without realizing I had started watching the series out of order.  I will note that it didn't detract from my enjoyment of "A Case for the Yarn Maker" since I didn't know what I didn't know.  However, if you haven't started watching the series, you will wish to start with "A Case for the Winemaker", since it gives more background and initially introduces the characters.

For instance, in the winemaker episode, we see the opening of Ainsley's craft market and get a better feel for how it works.  I loved the concept of the market, which is reminiscent of a crafts fair with individual booths.  While the market was the site of the murder in the second movie, A Case for the Yarn Maker, the market was not really the focus.

We also see how a simple book club becomes a group of self-appointed "investigators" in a murder case.  In a small town, everyone knows everything about everyone, except outsiders.  In Sweet River, Texas, the book club simply can't resist a murder mystery in their own town!

It is obvious that the movies do not have to be watched in order, but I would recommend it so you have all of the background knowledge and information.

Synopsis of A Case for the Winemaker

When Ainsley McGregor discovers a murder victim in the winery, she knows it is impossible to immediately identity the murderer.  No one is in the vicinity of the body and there is no apparent reason why anyone would kill someone in a winery.

With her criminology background, Ainsley can't just sit back and watch when her best friend's husband (owner of the winery) is the number one murder suspect.  She, herself, questioned why he had changed clothes since she saw him earlier in the day.

It isn't hard for Ainsley to insert herself into the investigation since her brother, Ryan, is the town sheriff.  He tolerates her interference because of her criminologist background and uncanny intuition.  Together, the siblings really do make a fun team to watch.  They actually talk to each other like siblings instead of colleagues.

Aside from the murder investigation, it is rather funny to watch the interactions between Ryan and his best friend, who seeks his advice on dating Ainsley.

________

Ainsley McGregor (Candace Cameron Bure) is the main character, but the series would not be complete without her brother, Ryan McGregor (Robin Dunne) and his best friend, Jake Trenton (Aaron Ashmore).  Together, they make a wonderful trio of crime solvers who look out for each other.

Ainsley McGregor Mysteries: A Case for the Yarn Maker - Movie Review (2025)

A Case for the Yarn Maker
I love cozy mystery movies!  I have watched several cozy mystery movies by Great American Family and thus far, have enjoyed every one of them.  I like having a mystery to try to solve without any gore or violent scenes to endure.

"A Case for the Yarn Marker" is the most recent cozy mystery movie I've watched.  It is part of the Ainsley McGregor series that features a former criminologist who has chosen to leave Chicago to move to her favorite vacation destination where her brother lives.  However, crime is everywhere, including Sweet River, Texas.

Along with the murder mystery, there is a touch of romantic interest between characters.  In this movie, Ainsley McGregor (Candance Cameron Bure) is romantically interested in the fire chief of the city.  Plus, her brother is the sheriff.  She is teaching criminology in the local university and has opened a craft market for community artists.  All things considered, whether she wants to be or not, she is going to be an integral part of crime investigations in Sweet River.

A Case for the Yarn Maker Synopsis

(subscription may be required)
Ainsley McGregor is hosting a special event in her Bless Your Arts craft market and has invited Ellie Mitchum, a wealthy yarn company owner/founder, to speak
.  She is expecting someone who is happy to be there.  After all, Mitchum is from Sweet River too and actually attended school in the event location.  However, Ainsley has to welcome a somewhat irritable and rude individual.

According to other locals who knew her, Ellie Mitchum has never been a particularly nice person.  She is even accused of stealing someone else's designs.  The person accusing Ellie happens to be a respected member of the community who, unbeknownst to Ainsley, plans to confront Ellie at the event.

When Ellie Mitchum is murdered, there are plenty of suspects including members of her own family, company board members and of course, the "respected member of the community" who has accused her of being a thief.

Because Mitchum is not well liked, finding her murderer is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack.  Too many people had reason to want her gone.

Gilded Newport Mysteries: Murder at the Breakers (2024) Movie Review

murder at the breakers

MbgPhoto recently published her review of the Cozy Mystery Genre and that made me yearn to watch a new cozy mystery movie.

I suspect I have always enjoyed cozy mysteries but didn't really know the proper category to search until I started reading reviews on ReviewThisReviews and learned the name of the genre.

I've never liked gory thrillers or horror films, although I have watched many of them in my lifetime, even reviewed a few over the last decade, but I have always loved a good mystery.  Thus the reason I love Sherlock Holmes and Poirot.  While I have not found anything comparable to Poirot or Sherlock, I have enjoyed some great cozy mystery movies.

was drawn to this movie because of the time period setting.  I love the Gilded Age era fashion.  However, I would be the first to admit, I do not admire the "classes" of that era or the way workers were trampled on so the elitist class could get richer, faster.  I do have to suspend reality to enjoy some fiction and I did enjoy watching the Gilded Newport Mysteries.

Gilded Newport Mysteries: Murder at the Breakers Synopsis

Emma Vanderbilt-Cross is the niece of Cornelius Vanderbilt and the daughter of a Vanderbilt who married below her station.  Emma is not an heiress to any of the Vanderbilt money, but is still included in society as a Vanderbilt.  She prefers to remain unmarried, at least for a while, as she considers her options.  She enjoys writing articles for the "Fashions and Fancies" women's section in the Newport Observer newspaper, which pays the bills.  She would love to write a novel, but she realizes that would bring scandal upon the Vanderbilt family.

She has been invited to a ball being given for her cousin at the Vanderbilt's summer home, The Breakers.  Emma is determined to include her half-brother (her father's son before he married her mother) and takes Brady to the ball as her guest.

Unfortunately, when her uncle's business advisor is murdered at the ball, Brady appears to be the murderer.  Of course, it would not be a great mystery if everything was so obvious and I will admit, I was surprised to find out the identity of the real murderer.

A very entertaining mystery indeed!  And, a touch of romance just for fun.

A Note About The Breakers Mansion - Current Day

"The Breakers" is in fact the name of the Vanderbilt mansion in Newport, Rhode Island.  It was the real Cornelius Vanderbilt II's summer home.  It is now a museum that is owned and maintained by the Preservation Society.

____________

I watched The Gilded Newport Mysteries series on Frndly TV, a subscription streaming service, but it may also be available on other subscription services that include Hallmark Murders & Mysteries.
