These easy-to-make salt potatoes are a perfect side dish to compliment any meal, and your family and friends will love them.
Salt potatoes are a regional side dish that originated in Syracuse New York. The potatoes used for salt potatoes are, first harvested small young potatoes.
As the potatoes cook, the salt forms a crust on the outside, while the inside is soft and creamy. I garnished my salt potatoes with fresh parsley and chives and served them with melted butter to pour over the soft creamy inside.
I honestly have never heard of salt potatoes before. I was telling a friend that I was going to smoke a turkey breast over the weekend and he suggested making salt potatoes as the side dish.
We have lived in Western New York for 33 years and I have never seen these in the grocery store until now. Apparently, you can buy salt potatoes in a kit. So, look in your local grocery store to see if you can find Salt Potatoes in a kit.
If you can't find a kit, you can use young small white potatoes and one cup of salt to six cups of water.
How to make Salt Potatoes:
5 lbs. small white potatoes (Washed)
1 cup salt
6 cups water
1/2 cup melted butter
Fresh parsley (Chopped)
Fresh Chives (Chopped)
Directions:
- Bring the water and salt to a boil until all of the salt has dissolved.
- Add the potatoes and boil for 25 to 30 minutes until the potatoes are soft and tender.
- Drain the water, pour over the melted butter and garnish with parsley and chives. Serve with more melted butter.
How interesting. I have never heard of 'salt potatoes' before. And to think I grew up within an hour's drive of Syracuse, NY. I may have even had this dish back in my youth and not known what it was called.
ReplyDeleteBTW, loved seeing the Wegman's name on the "Salt Potatoes Kit" picture. Best grocery store there ever was! One of the things I miss from my days of living in New York State. Thanks for this fascinating article and recipe, Sam.
As I said in the article Pat, We have lived here for more than 30 years and we never heard of them.
DeleteThis is totally new to me too! Never ever heard of "Salt Potatoes" before today, so thank you for my new information as I'm always up for learning something new. They sound delicious and I will certainly share this with family and friends. I think they are always looking for something new to do with those "spuds". Thanks Sam Monaco!
ReplyDeleteThese were also totally new to me Olivia. I was surprised when I found them in the grocery store. They are delicious!!
DeleteI love potatoes! They are one of my favorite dish sides, second only to pasta. I've boiled and served new potatoes (red) many times, but I have never boiled white potatoes. I am definitely game to try them IF I can find them small enough locally. Do you peel them before you boil them? The new red potatoes are cooked with skin on. I bet my daughter, who lives close to you, would love these potatoes, but I doubt they have heard of them before since she has never mentioned them to me. Awesome!!! Thanks for sharing this "new find" side dish.
ReplyDeleteThey are cooked with the skin on, no peeling needed. I never knew these even existed. I know your daughter will find them at Wegmans.

ReplyDeleteWow, like everyone here I hadn't heard of these. They sound delicious, I know my husband would love these. The fact that the salt forms a crust from the salt is fascinating. I'm probably going to try this out! Thanks for the intro to something different.
