A Tree Stump Vase - Great for Outdoor Decor

A Tree Stump Vase

Unfortunately, we recently had to have our gorgeous English Oak tree cut down. We've had the tree since 1994, so needless to say, it was a difficult decision.

After an Arborist confirmed it was dead, we had to call a Tree Service company to safely perform the sad removal.

We were given a choice to have the tree stump ground down or left standing.

We decided to keep the tree stump and decorate it with flowers.

Why Did We Choose A Tree Stump Vase?

We wanted to feature flowers on top, and since we weren't digging a cavern directly in the stump, we needed to safely secure a weather-resistant outdoor vase to the top.

We talked about a metal vase and a plain plastic vase; however, neither seemed safely practical.
The tree stump is located between two driveways; thus, we needed something lightweight yet durable should it ever break loose after we secured it to the stump and gawd-forbid damage our cars!
Here's a peek at the tree stump vase secured to the stump:

This tree stump vase is painted with weather-resistant UV paint to prevent fading and weathering. It's also designed to insulate plants from extreme heat or cold.

The one we purchased measures 10.5 inches in diameter and 9 inches high. They do come in other sizes. We verified the diameter of the tree stump beforehand. Also, we didn't want anything that stood too tall.

Here's another look at the tree stump with the flowers lifted.

We choose a tree stump vase primarily because it's lightweight, blends with the existing stump, and looks good without flowers.

In the fall, we'll change the flowers, and come winter, we'll come up with something creative to fill the tree stump vase.

The finished look with the Tree Stump Vase filled with flowers

We selected flowers that trail over the stump. They still need to do some growing.
We purchased this tree stump vase from Amazon Canada. I tried to find the same-sized tree stump vase from Amazon USA. However, this one from Amazon USA is smaller than the one we chose. You'll notice there are many tree stump designs to choose from!

  1. What a great idea. Not only does it look nice, it is probably a lot less expensive than having the stump ground down and leaves much less of an after effect. Many times when they grind the stumps down, there is lots of mushrooms that invade and are unsightly. This is much prettier than that!

  2. How clever. Having a tree stump vase filled with flowers on your remaining tree stump is a nice transition after losing your English Oak. To remove even the stump would leave such an empty place where the tree stood. This way you have an attractive replacement and a little bit of the memory of your tree.

  3. What a beautiful way to use a tree stump! I am sorry your old English Oak tree died. It is rather sad to have to say goodbye to our beloved trees. We also have a stump in our backyard from a flowering pear tree that was destroyed in a storm. I think the tree stump vase with hanging flowers on top of the old tree stump is a fabulous idea.

  4. Barbara, what a wonderful way to honor your beloved English Oak tree after its sad demise! I had never heard of or seen a tree stump vase before, so I would never have known that honoring a dead tree that had to be cut down this way was possible. Thank you for sharing your beautiful and ingenious transformation!

  5. What a beautiful way to make something good out of having to have your old oak tree cut down. It is always sad to lose a loved tree but you turned something sad into a positive. I love the tree stump vase and you will be able to change the flowers and plants with the seasons as you wish. It is very pretty thankyou for sharing it with us.
