When we bought our current home, a search priority was an enclosed garage. I was definitely willing to give up interior living area to have the safety provided by a garage. I have never regretted that decision. Actually, I would love to have more garage space.
As the years have passed, our garage has become a work space for my husband when he changes the oil in our cars and a variety of other maintenance jobs. He has his tool chest stored under his work table against the garage wall. There is just enough space there for his supplies.
Our garage has also become an easy access storage area for gardening equipment, painting supplies, and fans. We even have a second refrigerator against the back wall of the garage.
What I didn't consider prior to living in a home with a garage are the safety aspects. There are actually safety issues, both good and bad. The garage protects our cars and everything stored there. We can load and unload a car in enclosed safety. No one can observe when we are preparing for a trip. However, I can't see through the walls. When the garage door is open, people or animals can creep up on me.
Because we use the garage for storage, there is less room for maneuvering vehicles. There are times when I've needed help to make sure I didn't hit something as I pull into the garage.
Thankfully, my husband went in search of a mirror to hang on the back wall of the garage several years ago. It has truly been a life saver as well as a ding deterrent.
