Book Summary
Sybil Van Antwerp begins this letter writing story after her 73rd birthday. In some of her first letters you find out that she graduated law school from the University of Virginia in 1967. After graduation she shared a law practice Guy Donnelly. When he becomes a Circuit Court Judge, she follows him as his chief clerk and there remains for 30 years till her retirement.
Sybil writes letters to her brother Felix, her children, numerous friends, famous writers, and service agents. Through these letters we find out the narrative of Sybil's life. We hear of her troubles, her past, her issues with various service agents, and her fear of going blind. We also hear of old friendships, past friendships and developing friendships and even a romantic relationship or two. The letters truly gives us an insight into Sybil's life. There is also one unsent letter that goes throughout the book where Sybil pours out all her hopes and fears.
I really enjoyed the different format of this book, and although at first I was skeptical if I would like it, I found that I could not put it down. I highly recommend this book. It would also be a great book club read.
