Oh Today is Teddy Bear Day ~ A Fun Holiday Review

There are 365 days in a year (unless it's a leap year) and every one of them has a holiday or occasion attached to it.  Well it just so happens that September 9th is Teddy Bear Day!

I can't think of a holiday that is more fun.  Everyone loves Teddy Bears!

From the youngest babies to even older folk,  everyone has their special Teddy Bear that they have grown up with.  My 96 year old uncle has a whole shelf of them!  I guess at that age it's not surprising that he would have a few at least. I even have a whole shelf of Teddy Bears (and I won't tell you how old I am!)

Just a few of my motley crew of Teddy Bears

Many people already know the story about how the Teddy Bear got it's name, but just in case you don't know, I'll fill you in.

In 1902 Theodore Roosevelt was invited to go hunting.  They hunting party came upon a young bear cub and had it cornered  just waiting for the President to shoot it.  He looked at the young cub and could not and would not shoot it.  This incident caused many people to ridicule their President with unflattering cartoons and write ups.

A savvy store owner in New York was inspired by the cartoon and decided to create a new toy.  He even wrote the president asking for permission to name him "Teddy Bear". Who knew that this toy would take the country and the world by storm?

A baby's first gift from someone special in the family is usually a Teddy Bear.  They are cute, cuddly, soft to the touch and oh so easy to fall in love with.  But today there are kids of all ages who are as much in love with Teddy Bears as the babies are who get them.

We have all kinds of bears today that have become famous.  Stories have been written, that have brought these loveable characters to the forefront again and again.  Just think of Paddington (who even had a commercial spot with the  late Queen) and of course Winnie the Pooh.  Here in North America we also had the wonderful Care Bears with their own TV series.

All of this just helps to keep our darling Teddy Bears right there in the forefront of everyone's mind when it come to getting a gift for a child or someone else special.  Teddy Bears can cover a multitude of occasions for gift giving, from birthdays, to get well wishes and even  "I Love You" sentiments.  Think of a reason and I'm sure you will find a Bear to fit.

With 7 pages of Teddy Bears on Amazon, and hundreds of other hand made (think original crochet ) , or original Teddy Bear kits to make yourself, you won't run out of a reason not to get one for yourself. Especially if you don't have one!

I don't know of another toy or gift that puts an instant smile on everyone's face like a Cuddly Teddy Bear!

Just for a little extra fun, if you click on any of the BLUE COLORED links, when you see the word Teddy Bear, you will find a different bear just for you to enjoy!

Oh just for your information, I decided to stick to "stuffed" bears, there is a whole bunch of others out there that aren't so stuffy!  But these ones are just so much fun to take on a Teddy Bear Picnic.

Play-Doh's Campfire Picnic Playset Review

Play-Doh's Campfire Picnic playset. Children who love camping will love it!

Play-Doh's Campfire Picnic: Children who love camping will love this playset!

Love camping with your family? Play-Doh's Campfire Picnic playset will let you and your children recreate the fun of camping even when you cannot be at the campground. What follows is a brief review of this set.

Released in 2015 as a limited edition playset at Toys R Us, it is now retired and no longer readily available at the store. However, it is available new and used on eBay. Recommended for children aged 3 and up, I think this set represents a whole lot of fun camping-themed play.

It includes a play mat, a campfire with brown logs and gray stones, a frying pan and utensils, five containers of Play-Doh and more. Rustle up some pretend chow for breakfast, lunch or supper. Great fun for a child who enjoys Play-Doh, camping and cooking. I can see your little ones cooking up a fun treat with this set.

Find Play-Doh's Campfire Picnic here on eBay.

See you at the toy store!

Patriotic Party Time

red, white, and blue fireworks
Happy Independence Day!
As Independence Day approaches, I am both excited and a bit sad. It's always been sort of the halfway point for summer and I am NOT ready for Summertime to end. So, I am choosing to focus on the holiday and summer parties instead. Come along for some great ideas and suggestions from our Squidoo lensmasters.

Patriotic Parties Rock!

A patriotic theme is perfect for Memorial Day, Labor Day, and of course, Independence Day. However, it's also perfect for almost any summer celebration. You could use a patriotic theme for events like:
  • Family Reunions
  • Graduations
  • Retirement Parties
  • Picnics
  • School Reunions and so much more.
It really is a perfect theme all summer long. Let's look at some ideas for patriotic parties from lensmasters.

What Say You, Squidoo?

Starting with lensmaster angelastvs, we get a great overview and party suggestions. From decorations to games to food, she has included lots of ideas in her lens titled: Patriotic Party Planning

Partybuzz has some great ideas for a budget-friendly party. In her lens, How to Plan a July 4th Party on a Budget, she shares some of the ideas she uses with her own family parties. From centerpieces and decorations on through activity ideas -- all are easy on the wallet.

Finally, Michelle_L shares ideas from her own 4th of July party. Grilling out, crafts and more food and decorations are suggested in this fun lens titled: 4th of July Party Ideas -- Recipes, Crafts and Decorations.

What About You?

Do you have some summer fun family traditions incorporating a patriotic theme? For example, I shared my family's patriotic buffet at the beginning of summer. We'd love to hear about them! Join Squidoo and write your own suggestions and recommendations for free! As the Party Planning Contributor on Squidoo, I'll help you anyway I can as well as promote your party lens(es).

It's all about sharing and helping. Happy Independence Day, America!

Party Ideas for Mother's Day

Happy Mothers Day heart banner
First of all:  Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there!

Now, I realize that today is actually Mother's Day so these ideas for a Mother's Day shindig will probably go on the back burner until next year. Still, it'll give you plenty of time to come up with something to blow mom's socks off with next year!

A Party? For Mother's Day?

Sure! A party is really just two or more people celebrating something -- a holiday, milestone, achievement, success, etc... Mother's Day certain falls in this realm. Mother's are forever planning parties and events for their children, why not plan something in her honor?

I ran over to Squidoo to see what suggestions were available. As always, I was not disappointed. Squidoo really is a fount of information. If you search for "Mother's Day", you will be rewarded with ideas for gifts, crafts, trivia, cards, poems, songs, gift baskets and, of course, food.

Then, I searched for Mother's Day Party and was pointed towards some really cool ideas for celebrating this wonderful person in your life.

A Mother's Day Tea Party

WriterJanis tells us, "This is a chance to get dressed up and give Mom an elegant celebration"  in her lens titled How to Throw a Mother's Day Tea Party. She gives us ideas for invitations, decorations, which teas to serve, food and dessert ideas as well as music and even games.

This lens is truly a one stop shop for inspiration for your Mother's Day celebration. Bookmark it for future reference!

Mother's Day Picnic

A cool and different idea for celebrating mom's day is a picnic. It's May, warmer and people are itching to get outside. The Perfect Mother's Day Picnic by vermontmom has a host of ideas to choose from, even getting the kids involved in the preparations.

As she says in her intro, you'll find some tips and ideas to make your picnic "almost as special as your mom." What a sweet sentiment.

Do Something for Mom

Moms are great and we should celebrate them more than once a year but doing it up nicely on Mother's Day can't hurt. Take some time to research and plan a wonderful party or get-together for your mom. She'll always remember...

Wishing everyone and their mother a wonderful Mother's Day, 2014!
