Ace Hardware Color of the Year Review

Ace Color of the Year Contest

Ace Hardware is known for it's multiple paint products and their paint mixers which are able to give the customers the exact paint colors they desire. In mid-2018, in conjunction with Clark and Kensington Paint, Ace decided to run a consumer-led color contest to select a new batch of colors for 2019.

Ace held a Neighborhood Paint Party in March, 2018 where consumers were encouraged to hand mix, create and name their own paint color for a chance to be entered into Ace's Color of the Year Contest.

The Winning Color of the Year

Twenty-five finalists were selected from the entries by a panel of Ace color experts and over 35,000 fans voted for their favorite color via social media channels.

Pineapple Cream Granita is the winning color of the Ace Color of the Year contest

The winning Clark+Kensington color was created by a New Jersey woman who states she was daydreaming about enjoying a delicious dessert while on a relaxing vacation.

“The color is soothing and yet bright; sweet with just a bit of tartness.”

She named her mellow yellow winning color “Pineapple Cream Granita”. As the winner, she also received a $1,000 Ace Gift Card.

  1. I hadn't heard of Ace's Color of the Year contest before, but I absolutely love this idea! And while I'm not much of a yellow person, that aqua shade (Tina's Patina) is gorgeous and that lagoon blue (Miracles in D'skies) is similar to the shade we painted on our living room's feature wall. Thanks so much for sharing, Elf. I hope they make this contest an annual event!

    1. Thanks for visiting, Margaret. I tried to find out if Ace plans to run their contest again as I thought it was a very clever idea. The entrants obviously had a great time mixing paints and coming up with their own unique color. So far, I haven't seen any plans to do the contest again, but I agree it should be an annual event. I'll have to ask at my local Ace Hardware, since I also work there part-time. :)

  2. Oh I like all those shades and it speaks to why I haven't painted any walls yet......I would mix all of those in my abode and then have something worth talking about, but not in a nice way. Wish I could look at one color and fall in love. I'm a rainbow kind of girl I guess.

    1. Paint colors are as specific as the person choosing them, Olivia. A color has to 'speak' to you as perfect before you will want it on the walls of your home. Thanks for your visit.

  4. Many times I have considered painting my kitchen a light yellow, but I have always feared it would end up being too yellow. The creators description sounds like what I would be trying to accomplish. "Soothing, yet bright" is a pretty tall order for sure.

I love the idea of having a create a new paint color contest! Sounds like a lot of fun even if your color didn't win.

  5. I would have LOVED to be a part of this contest! And yes, the winning color is gorgeous, I'd paint a room in that color, can just picture it now. How cool is it that they got to name their color as well!

  6. I want to enter next year's contest! What fun. My favorite of these colors is Miracles in D'skies. I've often thought I'd like a job naming paint colors. I have gone to my local ACE and had them match a paint color for me. Love that technology.
