Why Do You Need a Rechargeable Power Failure LED Night Light?
Night lights are wonderful. They keep you from tripping over things in the dark when you don't want to turn on some other light. We have them in the bedrooms and the bathroom. The ones we have now are not only rechargeable but also dual-purpose. They turn into flashlights during a power failure. I have used these GE Rechargeable Power Failure LED Night Lights for years now.
What's Special about These Night Lights?
When these nights are plugged in providing light in a room, they are also recharging. If there is a power failure, they not only stay lit so you can find them, but you can unplug them and use them as flashlights.

Although the night light is always charging when plugged in, it automatically senses when it's dark enough to need to be on. So it comes on at dusk or in a dark place and turns off when daylight reaches it. It also turns off if another light is turned on to make a night light unnecessary. You don't need to worry about forgetting to turn it off in the morning.
My Experience with These Rechargeable Night Lights
I inherited a house from my mom in 2005. When the night light she had been using burned out, I decided I wanted one that had a sensor to turn it on and off automatically. I tend to be forgetful. I wanted the light to be bright enough to help me find my way to the bathroom after dark, but not bright enough to keep me awake when I was trying to sleep.
I looked at a lot of night lights and decided to try this one. It's never failed me yet. When I discovered how many power failures this house seems to have in a year, I knew I needed more of these, so I bought two more -- one for the hall bathroom and one for the hall itself. I think I will buy two more soon -- one for the family room and one for the kitchen.
I had learned my lesson during our last unexpected power failure that happened at night. I was totally unprepared and that bedroom night light was the only light in the house. Since it could be used as a flashlight when I unplugged it, I could use it to find candles and the only other flashlights we had. That's when I decided to buy more of these night lights and some emergency lanterns.

Now I'm Prepared for Power Outages
I have emergency lanterns spread around the rooms we use most, and I have these rechargeable night lights in my bedroom, the bathroom, and the hall. My husband also keeps a flashlight by his bed. A night light will do him no good since he doesn't have a place to plug it in that is accessible. He can use his flashlight to find the closest emergency lantern.
I can easily see my way through the hall or bedroom to the bathroom, which has its own light, without turning on a brighter light. As night lights these give enough light to follow 2 am bladder calls without turning on the bathroom light and thoroughly waking ourselves up. There's just enough light to find what we need. That saves the energy that turning on larger lights would use.
I highly recommend these lights. The one in my bedroom has lasted over ten years now. If I wanted to store it or pack it for a trip or moving, the plug is retractable.
Why not pick up some of these for your home now while you're thinking about it? Then you, too, will always have enough light to see your way around -- even when the lights go out. Get enough so you have one for every room that is used after dark.

What a wonderful invention - a nightlight/flashlight combination. These are great.
ReplyDeleteI ordered my first one for my book warehouse years ago. It would have been a booby trap without light, and I always had to keep the door shut to move past the doorway. It was a converted shed with a wooden door. Because of the door size I couldn't get a new door that actually had a handle and would open and shut easily. The door opened in. When it was wet after a rain it would barely open enough for me to squeeze through it, but the whole shed was a gift from a friend who had to move into the city. I added drywall to it and got electricity for it, but without lights it was very dark. I was always afraid of being trapped in there if the lights went out. I got one of these night lights because I knew if the lights went out I'd be able to see that light, get to it, and have a flash light. There were no windows, so it was dark even during the day when the door was shut.
DeleteI never knew there was such a thing. My husband is such a stickler for having flashlights all around the house in case of a power outage. I think he might like one of these to replace the night light that we have in our bathroom. Do they stay on when plugged in if the power goes out?
ReplyDeleteYes, if the power goes out, the light will come on so you can find it. When you unplug it, it becomes a flashlight and the plug will retract when you push it in.
DeleteI'm with Beverly, I never knew they made a night light to double as a flash light. Great Review! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be without mine. They won't last forever, but nothing will. It's a good idea to test every month just like you check smoke alarms every year. They will still act as nightlights even if the battery that causes it to light during a power failure dies. I've never had a problem with mine yet.
DeleteThis is an excellent invention! It's amazing how truly dark it is where we live when the power goes out. This is perfect to provide just enough light to help us locate emergency flashlights when needed. Great review!
ReplyDeleteThey are perfect for that, but they also help us save power every night by lighting dark places just enough to get around without turning on a light switch.
DeleteThis night light/flashlight combo is a great idea - much better than the simple plug in nightlights I currently use (which wouldn't work if the power went out). Great idea, Barbara.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't want to be without mine.
DeleteWe have this flashlights throughout our house. As a matter of fact, we gave them as Christmas gifts last year. I think they are wonderful!!! We choose the Sylvania brand, but it is almost exactly like the GE brand. In the photos above, I honestly can't see any difference other than the looks of the bulb cover.
ReplyDeleteI noticed that, too. Once you click through to Amazon you can see all the possibilities, since many manufacturers make lights with similar functions. I've been reading reviews, and what I've learned is all the brands seem to have a few that are defective, but most people are as happy as I am. Customers who purchased different brands all seem to agree that asr time goes by, the lights get more dim. Some people use newer lights where brightness is most important, like a hall, and use the ones that are beginning to dim as bedroom nightlights. I think I read that on the Blackout Buddy reviews.
DeleteGreat idea Barbara, especially for those older homes that have questionable lighting. We haven't had a black out in a long time, so I think we are due for one soon. I will have to be prepared and get a few of these.
ReplyDeleteThey are good for night lights all the time. You don't even have to wait for a black-out.
DeleteI will have to add these to my wish list of things I want around the house. Great review!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sandy. They are very handy to have around. You never know when you'll wish you had them.
