Shot glasses may seem like unusual prep tools when cooking or baking, but they are actually the perfect pinch bowls for ingredients. In my kitchen, they are as essential as measuring spoons or mixers.
Not only are they glass and transparent, they have measurements printed on
them. Plus, they have a weighted base so they will not turn over. Due
to their small size, they are easy to stack & store. Shot glasses take
up very little space on the kitchen counter when working which allows you to
use as many as you need for individual ingredients.
Before I ever start to mix anything, I measure out all of the recipes ingredients in separate measuring cups & shot glasses. The shot glasses are great for holding small amounts of seasonings, spices, extracts, or small amounts of liquid. I still use my measuring spoons to measure & level the seasonings, but you could use the shot glass measurements on the side if you prefer.
By pre-measuring all of the recipe ingredients into separate shot glasses & measuring cups, I don't forget any ingredients, or wonder if I have already added a specific ingredient as I work. If the shot glass of salt is still sitting on the counter, I know I haven't added it yet. Plus, I can stir and mix everything together faster if I don't have to stop to measure each ingredient as I go.
Shot Glasses Are Excellent Pinch Bowls
Shot GlassesCheck PriceShot glasses can be used for so much more than measuring alcohol. Because
they allow a clear view of contents and have the measurements printed on the
glass, they are great when cooking. I have 4 shot glasses in my kitchen
cabinet of baking supplies and I use them often.
In the introduction photo, I have the seasonings for manicotti pre-measured and ready to add as
needed.

Shot glasses are also dishwasher safe, therefore clean up is a lot faster. I enjoy cooking & baking, but I hate washing bowls and kitchen utensils.
What a clever idea. I have previously pre-measured and set out all ingredients when baking, but never for regular dinner meals. This would save a lot of time without taking up a lot of room. I just moved into a small apartment, so have less room than previously, especially in the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteThe "less room" issue is exactly what prompted me to look for pinch bowls that take up less room on the counter & in my cabinets. The idea of using shot glasses was a eureka moment for me. In years past, I didn't always measure everything first, but now I find it helps me "know" at a glance what I have or have not added to a dish. I am often distracted by the phone, ongoing conversations, someone at the door, etc, when I am cooking and I like the easy reminders pinch bowls/shot glasses provide.
DeleteYou are a much more organized cook than I am. I could use a better system. This would be a simple way to turn my cooking and baking into a smooth operation. Thanks for the tips and recommendations.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely helps make baking a "smooth operation"! Measuring beforehand, keeps me from grabbing the wrong measuring spoon or cup and pouring ingredients in before I confirm I have the correct amount. I have truly become more organized out of necessity. So much of what I do is by rout and rout leads to mistakes because anyone can lose track of progress when interrupted.
DeleteYou are a very organized cook. I tend to guesstimate small amounts rather than measuring, unless it is a first time recipe. Those shot glasses are a good idea!
ReplyDeleteThank you Mary Beth! I have a lot of meals I make without measuring ingredients too, so I know exactly what you are talking about. I've always measured carefully when baking, but find I enjoy the reassurance pinch bowls offer now in meals (like manicotti) that I only make once every few months.
DeleteI have one of these that I occasionally use for measuring small amounts of liquids for recipes, but I like your idea even better! I do have some very small silicone pinch bowls (and larger ones in stainless steel), but I might just pick up a few more of these. Thanks for this clever recommendation!
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't surprise me at all that our resident Keto recipe queen uses pinch bowls in a variety of sizes and materials. I've had larger pinch bowls for baking for decades, but I find the shot glasses are perfect for holding a teaspoon or tablespoon of something, without messing up a larger pinch bowl for such a small amount. I frequently use 3 shot glasses at a time (a sentence I never thought I would hear myself say! lol).
DeleteWhat a GREAT idea Ms. Mouse! I have very tiny Pyrex bowls (they hold around a cup) that I use for a similar purpose but they are often still too big. Thank you for sharing this pro tip!
ReplyDeleteThank you Dawn! The shot glasses won't replace those wonderful tiny Pyrex bowls, but they compliment them quite well for those smaller measurements of spices & extracts.
DeleteSylvestermouse, I absolutely LOVE this idea. The fact that they take up very little counterspace is the bonus, and it's an easy way to get all those ingredients ready for cooking. What a fantastic tip.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Barbara! Their small size is definitely the #1 reason I use them. I never have enough counter space.
DeleteWhat a brilliant and inspired idea!! I would feel so organised and in control if I used these shot glasses while cooking and baking. It would be ideal to know that you have never forgotten to add an essential ingredient! We never have enough counter space either so it's great they take up so little space. Thank you for this great idea and tips!
ReplyDeleteI think I need to get my cook some of these little kitchen helpers. He is notorious for using every possible bowl, cup, and spoon to get his ingredients together. Maybe this would help him (and me, because I get the clean up) become just a little bit neater in his prep work. Thanks for pointing these fancy and neat kitchen helpers out! I never knew there was such a thing!
