Whimzees Natural Dog Treat Review
My little furball is in love with his new friend Whimzees
Dog Treats! I am in love that I found a dog treat my dog can actually eat due
to his new friend the low protein dog diet. Whimzees brand of dog treats are actually all natural dental
treats so one a day is the recommended serving.
One of the fun features are the different sizes and shapes
of Whimzees. Every dog has their unique preference of the size and shape of a
dog treat and then there are those dogs which are generalists. My dog is a
generalist; not necessarily picky, but does prefer the chew stick or chew round
as the first options.
Unfortunately due to a tangle with bladder stones my dog had
to be switched to a low protein menu which included low protein dog treats and
chews. The treats were not an issue as I had always restricted the types of
treats; but taking away the favorite dog chew was a huge issue!
The Fluff (as I call my dog in jest, as he is not a wash and
wear type dog and needs to be groomed and fluffed!) absolutely without
hesitation indicated that a daily chew was a necessity.
It was very difficult to find any dog chews that were
"low protein" as defined by under 15-20% protein content. When I was
roaming up and down the treat aisle at the local pet store I lucked into one of
the employees who was also a dog nutritionist. I was reading the ingredients of
Whimzees and as we together went through the ingredients the dog nutritionist
explained each ingredient and its' benefit. The Whimzees Vegetable Sausage is a
dental dog treat so the Fluff eats the stick quickly, but is very satisfied.
It was absolutely no problem to switch to the Whimzees Dog
Treats. I chose the Vegetable Sausage as it was a chew stick and suitable for
the size of the Fluff. The Fluff approved immediately and is a happy little
chewer with the added bonus of helping to keep his teeth clean and his breath
fresh.
Whimzees can be purchased in variety packs of different
shapes or a pack of the same type of dog
treat. I began with the Vegetable Sausage and next time will order the variety
pack for small dogs for a change of pace. Dog owners seeking a grain free treat will love Whimzees too!
The Fluff and I highly recommend Whimzees!

Embark Dog DNA Test Review
Embark Dog DNA Test Kit |
Dogs are such wondrous mysteries. When we adopt a rescue animal, there is this
vast unknown. It is only natural to have
a desire to discover as much as possible about a new family member. In the quest to uncover a newly adopted fur
baby’s history, more and more pet parents are choosing to explore their dog’s
breed mix, heritage, and health profiles through DNA analysis. This is where the Embark Dog DNA Test comes
into play.
Finn's Disability is Congenital |
I have had so many questions about my newest dog, Finn. Because he was rescued from a situation of extreme neglect, and because Finn has a congenital condition (Medial Patella Luxation), it seemed especially
critical to know more about potential health issues. Of course, like most people who choose to
have their dogs tested, I was also excited to gain a greater insight into
Finn’s family tree. One of my biggest
questions, with regard to Finn being rescued with a group of dogs (a hoarding case), has
centered on what his relationship might be to the other dogs that were trapped in the same household with him.
My decision to send Finn’s DNA to Embark’s veterinary
geneticists came about when a fellow adopter of one of the dogs saved with Finn
spoke to me about Clark’s DNA results. I
suspected that Finn and Clark might share a Border collie ancestor. Curiosity led me to go online and order my
Embark Dog DNA Test so I could compare Clark and Finn’s results. Amazingly, my test kit arrived within three
business days.
Finn's DNA Sample |
Collecting Finn’s DNA sample took just 30 seconds. Using the swab in the kit, I soaked up a
small amount of saliva and secured the sample in the vial provided for
preservation. Mailing the vial could
not have been easier. A postage paid
label and box were provided.
Embark is exceptional when it comes to communication. At every step along the way, I was notified
by email and text message about what was happening with Finn’s DNA sample. For instance, I knew when it was in the
centrifuge, when it was being purified, when the DNA was being replicated (one
million copies!), and when the geneticists were beginning to build Finn’s
profile chromosome by chromosome.
Finn's Health Summary |
First, I received Finn’s health summary. I was relieved to see that he is clear of
each of the common genetic conditions identified for his breed mix. Competitors charge extra for each test. I appreciated the advantage of having all of these genetic disease tests included in the price of the Embark test kit. As a bonus, a custom report was provided for
Finn’s vet.
Finn's Breed Mix |
Next, the greatly anticipated breed mix report arrived
through my online portal. Wow! I was expecting Finn to be part poodle and
part Border collie. That was confirmed. What I didn’t anticipate were all of the
other interesting breed mixes and percentages.
Finn's Family Tree |
There are other advanced features and analyses too involved to cover in this review. One thing I will mention is that Finn now has the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research. When I chose the Embark Dog DNA Test, one of the factors that appealed to me most was that of the ongoing research which would provide me with continual updates.
Though there are less expensive DNA tests, with faster results, I am completely sold on Embark's comprehensive package. I feel the cost was reasonable for what I gained in terms of knowledge about Finn, reassurance about his genetic disease risk, and the fascinating details about canine genes. I highly recommend Embark's Dog DNA Test.

Ortho Sleeper Comfort Couch for Dogs Reviewed
The Ortho Sleeper Comfort Couch with a Removable Cushion made by the Carolina Pet Company is one of the best investments we have made for our dogs.
As our Golden Retriever has aged, it has gotten harder for her to get up after a nap. We have hardwood floors in the kitchen and den, which are the areas of our home that we stay in most of the time. Hardwood floors are easier to clean, but they are not easy on old bones. When our pretty girl turned 11, her daddy was determined to find her a soft place to lay down, so he went in search of the very best orthopedic bed for dogs.
To avoid any appearance of favoritism, he purchased a dog bed for our Labrador Retriever too even though he was only 6 at the time. As it turns out, Merlin, the lab, loves the doggie couch beds the most.
We originally put the two beds side by side on the den floor, but Merlin, the lab, wanted one in the bedroom too. They aren't as necessary in our bedroom because that floor is carpeted, but Merlin wanted one in there. Since he is clearly strong enough to drag his own bed into the bedroom, we decided to leave one bed in the den and one in the bedroom. We have never allowed our dogs to sleep in our bed and I believe Merlin feels it is only fair that he should also have a bed in the bedroom too. This unexpected arrangement has actually worked out quite well for us and our pups.

We have never allowed our dogs to sleep in our bed and I believe Merlin feels it is only fair that he should also have a bed in the bedroom too. This unexpected arrangement has actually worked out quite well for us and our pups.
Our Goldie doesn't like sleeping on the carpet in our bedroom. She prefers the cold tile in front of the unlit fireplace. Therefore, she has not been keen to sleep in one of the doggie beds at night, but she will nap in them during the day. They seem perfectly welling to share the beds, one at a time of course. Therefore, having the beds in separate rooms is actually ideal.
Now, every night, Merlin lays down on his doggie sleeper couch, curls up into a ball, and goes sound asleep at the foot of our bed, while our Daisy girl seeks out the cooler tile floor that seems to allow her to sleep better throughout the night.
The Ortho Sleeper Comfort Couch for Dogs
When the dog beds arrived, I thought they were a strange design because they are a cushioned couch with sides, a back and a removable pillow. If I had been selecting the dog bed, I would have picked one that is designed more like the removable pillow only. However, I would have been wrong. It seems like both of our pups like the back and arms on the dog bed. They frequently will lay in the bed with their head resting on the arm section of the "couch". Their little eyes are the only thing moving as they watch the comings and goings in the den.
CPC Ortho Sleeper Large Comfort Couch with Removable Cushion, ChocolateCheck PriceI have truly been amazed at the durability of these dog beds. Even after 2 years of use, by two large dogs, they have held their shape and have no rips, tears or even bare spots in the fabric. The covers are machine washable. .
The only negative that I have found about the Ortho Sleeper Comfort Couch for dogs, is that it is hard to stuff the cushion sections into the zippered covers. But, it is well worth the effort when I see my pups resting peacefully in their beds.
While writing this article, I discovered that there are some knock-offs of the Carolina Pet Company bed that are less expensive. I cannot begin to assess the quality of any other brand, even if it looks the same. I certainly would not recommend buying one just because it looks similar. The quality of the fabric or the cushions may well be inferior, thus making it less expensive to make the beds. Like anything else, I would not expect inferior products to be comparable in durability or comfort.
One of the hardest decisions was what size to buy. We purchased the 37 x 56 size for our dogs. As you can see in the photos, that is clearly big enough for large dogs. Merlin is a 98lb Labrador Retriever and Daisy is a 97lb Golden Retriever mix. It is available in one size smaller (32 x 47) and in one size larger (48 x 69).

Hoover Power Scrub Elite Review
The Hoover Power Scrub Elite |
Hoover Power Scrub Elite
The Hoover Power Scrub Elite seems to be a sturdy and reasonably priced residential carpet shampooer. There are several features about this shampooer that are more handy that I expected.
Wash & Rinse. The clean water reservoir is divided. Initially, I thought that would bother me (there is a small reservoir for the carpet cleaning solution within the fresh water reservoir). However, I have found that I really like the solution separate from the fresh water. And there is a handy button to choose "wash" or "rinse". No more refilling the jug to go over a wet carpet with clean water to rinse. I can rinse each small section as I go.
Dries 2xs Faster. Okay, I don't really know if it dries exactly 2xs faster than my previous shampooer. The "dries 2xs faster" is the claim that Hoover has printed on the box. But it does dry FAST! When I began using this shampooer, we were in the winter months - and the air was very dry. I assumed the super fast drying of the carpet was due to the climate. Not the shampooer. Then I shampooed on a humid day. I dread shampooing on humid or rainy days as it often takes so long to dry. But not with this machine. I'm not certain whether it is due to the strong suction power or the "HeatForce" drying. Whatever the reason, I am thrilled with the short drying time.
Spin Scrub Brushes. My last shampooer had only one spinning bar of brushes. The Hoover Power Scrub Elite has five spinning brushes in a row. It cleans and fluffs my carpet.
Removes Pet Odors. I'm not sure if it is the scrubbing brushes, the HeatForce, or the cleaning solution formula that came with my machine but the odors from Daisy's and Willy's occasional accidents are gone!
The Many Reasons I Own A Shampooer
There are many people who hire folks to come in and clean their carpets. And just as many people who rent commercial shampooers from a store to DIY. There are many reasons I don't want to do either of those things.
Expense. Hiring someone to clean my carpet is expensive. And with customer service becoming what it is, I don't want the muss and fuss of someone coming into my home. Besides, I have a very small apartment with only a bit of carpet.
Bugs! Renting a commercial shampooer to do it myself makes me cringe. In this day and age of things like Bed Bugs I'll have to pass on using something that cleaned someone else's carpet. Someone will probably tell me that bed bugs can't travel in a shampooer but I still can't stand the thought.
Convenience. I have dogs. And a cat. Occasionally they have accidents. And worse than that, I'm terribly clumsy. I spill things. All the time. Whether it's just a touch up in one spot, or the entire carpet needs cleaned, I want to shampoo when I want to. And I can do that with my own shampooer.
Extends the Life of the Carpet. Okay, in this shabby (but not chic) apartment, there's not a lot I can do to extend the life of this el-cheapo carpet. But, I can keep it clean, fresh, and "fluffed". I hate how the "high traffic areas" in a room get matted and flat. The scrubbing brushes on this shampooer are especially good at improving the looks of this carpet.
If there is any reason you are in the market for a carpet shampooer, give the Hoover Power Scrub Elite serious consideration. I've only owned mine for several months but I already know that it is significantly better than my previous shampooer.

Zack & Zoey Nor'easter Dog Blanket Coat Review
When you live in the mountains, the weather can turn on you
without warning. My adventure companion,
Toby, has to be prepared for a wide range of conditions on our daily
hikes. One of the most important pieces
of outdoor gear for my dog is his all-weather jacket. Toby’s new Zack & Zoey Nor’easter Dog Blanket Coat just
arrived and we gave it a test run this afternoon. Here’s our review of the coat’s performance.
First, I must mention that I specifically looked for a dog
coat that came in a high visibility orange color. With hunting season in high gear, Toby’s
safety was my top priority. Having a dog
that loves to root around in the brush for rabbits and bones made it imperative
that he not be mistaken for wild game. I
am extremely happy with the color of Toby’s new coat. He can be seen from a great distance and the
reflective stripe and paw logo on his coat provide for additional safety with
darkness coming on so early these days.
Score: 10/10
Next, I wanted a waterproof outer fabric that would offer a shield from the wind that blows down off the 14,000-foot peaks here in our stomping grounds. Toby's new Zack & Zoey dog coat has a polyester shell with just the right weave and weight to keep him comfortable. Any hiker at high elevations knows that every ounce counts. You need to find performance gear that won't weigh you down. The weight of Toby's new jacket is just perfect. We didn't have any precipitation to contend with during our test today, but we'll score this based on wind-breaking capacity. Score: 10/10

The third feature on our must-have list for a new dog coat
was that it be fleece-lined. We found
that the Zack & Zoey Nor’easter Dog Blanket Coat offers just the right
amount of warmth. Being a rugged,
outdoorsy kind of guy, Toby really likes the camo print lining, but you can
select another lining style if your dog has different fashion tastes. As an added bonus, this coat is reversible. We flipped the jacket inside out during our
test so you could see how it looks when reversed. You can choose from eight different coat
colors and lining prints. Score: 10/10
Our final expectations, in terms of the dog coat’s features,
centered on the ease of getting it off and on, as well as on the sizing
adjustability. The chest and belly
straps on this dog coat make it quick and simple to gear up. I’m pleased with the quality of the Velcro
closures. Some brands of dog coats have
leg openings that require a dog to step into his jacket. That would never work for us. Those kinds of openings constrain movement
and rub the wrong way on a dog’s body.
Toby and I much prefer the Zack & Zoey style of strapping. We found the sizing to be very accurate. I ordered an XL coat for Toby and it fits
just right. Score: 10/10
In summary, we couldn’t be happier with the Zack & Zoey Nor’easter Dog Blanket Coat. The coat is
everything we wanted and the price was extremely reasonable (much less than other dog coats). I will definitely buy this same coat again. Highly recommended. Toby gives this dog coat an overall score of 10/10 bones.
