To name a few of these famous duos that we have come to love and adore; Spencer Tracey and Katherine Hepburn, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, and how about Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon.
Paul Newman and Robert Redford, in my opinion, were one of these duos that were perfectly matched. In 1969 they teamed up in the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. This film was said to have launched Robert Redford's career.
These actors and so many more have teamed up to make so many classics. Their characters and personalities complemented each other to take us into another world for a few hours. They make us laugh, cry, gasp, or sit on the edge of our seats to see what happens next.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Review
Movie Plot:
The film is based on real-life outlaws in the late 1890's. Robert Leroy Parker is known as Butch Cassidy played by (Paul Newman), and Harry Longabaugh is known as the Sundance Kid played by (Robert Redford). Butch is the leader of the group known as The Hole in the Wall Gang.
The gang devises a new plan to rob the Union Pacific Railroad on both the eastbound and westbound runs. The first robbery goes well, but the second robbery things go wrong. A second train shows up carrying six lawmen.
As the six lawmen jump off the train on their horses, the gang decides to split up, Butch and Sundance go one way and the gang goes another. But, the six lawmen follow Butch and Sundance. All attempts to elude the six lawmen are failing.
Butch and Sundance find out the group is lead by a famous Indian tracker known as "Lord Baltimore" and a determined lawman Joe Lefors.
They find out from Sundance's girlfriend Etta played by (Kathern Ross) that the team of lawmen was hired by the head of the Union Pacific Railroad. Their job is to track them down and kill them. Butch, Sundance, and Etta move to Bolivia to try and start a new life.
I don't want to spoil the rest of the movie if you haven't seen it. This is one of those movies that will make you laugh, and you're going to find yourself rooting for the bad guys.
This short video is one of my favorite parts of the movie
Paul Newman and Robert Redford teamed up again in 1973 to make "The Sting". After these two hits by this duo, they never made another movie together. What a shame because they worked so well together.
You can find this classic on Amazon Prime or other streaming sites. Or, you could buy the DVD here.
These are the only two movies that Paul Newman and Robert Redford made together.

My dad loves this movie too Sam! It has been years since I have seen it. Clearly, it is time for me to view it again since I honestly do not remember the plot or the ending. I like both of the actors, Paul Newman & Robert Redford and I am sure I would enjoy watching the movie. Interestingly enough, I find I often root for the bad guys because I like the actors so well. I somehow suspect that is intended by Hollywood when they produce these types of movies with such beloved actors. I hadn't realized this was Redford's first movie though. He certainly ended up being a Hollywood golden boy!
ReplyDeleteFor sure, Cynthia, this is one of my favorite movies. I can't tell you how many times I've seen it. I don't know if this was Redford's first film but it is said to be the one that launched his career. Thanks!
DeleteAh, definitely a classic. And I've been in love with Robert Redford all my adult life, so naturally I've seen everything he was ever in. Robert Redford and Paul Newman became a classic duo themselves, doing so well together. Wonderfully reviewed, Sam.
ReplyDeletePS. I think the Sundance Kid role must have made an early impression on Robert Redford for him to have later named his production studio Sundance. :)
DeleteThanks so much, Pat, I forgot all about Redford's production studio "Sundance" I think you're correct there.
DeleteIt is such a pleasure to watch two performers with the "it" factor together. Sometimes it's hard to define what makes them click so perfectly. It's magic when it happens. And pretty rare, I think. It would be fun to go back and view some of the classic duos in action once again. Thanks for reminding me of the enjoyment of doing so.
ReplyDeleteI agree Diana it is certainly magic when it happens. This is one of my favorite movies, I can watch this one over and over again.
DeleteOne of my favorites. Thanks for the memories
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mary Beth, I loved this movie from the first time I saw it.
DeleteOne of my favorites! Great review, Sam.
ReplyDeleteThank you Brenda, One of my favorites also.
DeleteOh Sam, you have hit on a couple of movies that my sweetie and I watch quite often. Both Butch Cassidy and the Sting have an entertainment value that we both appreciate. Great Review.
ReplyDeleteI agree Olivia, It is a shame that these two never made any more movies together. Thanks!
DeleteBoth movies bring me back and make me feel nostalgic - I remember seeing them when they were first released - excellent movies for anyone looking for a good flick to watch on movie night
ReplyDeleteFor sure Barbara these two movies would make a great movie night. Some movies you could watch over and over again. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is one of those movies for me. Thanks!
